Need Ring Base unit to use this

As I only have the Ring doorbell, I had to stay with another range extender that simply plugs into an outlet.

Based on your review it seems that you tried to use your Ring Alarm Range Extender to extend your WIFI. We would like to note that the Range Extender does not extend WIFI or work for the Ring Cameras. It only works for the Ring Alarm Devices. Having further range is important when installing a security system, this ensures your Ring Alarm accessories stay connected no matter how far away from the Ring Base Station they are. Rest assured, we are here to provide you with information to extend your wifi network to your Ring camera device.
I do believe that you intended to buy a Ring Chime Pro, not a Ring Alarm Range Extender. When plugged into a standard wall socket, the Ring Chime Pro extends the reach of your router's wifi network, extending it out to wherever you have placed a Ring camera device. The Chime Pro also produces an audio signal whenever you receive an alert from a Ring device.
