Which is kind of the whole point. That's right -- most of the time, the button doesn't work when pushed. Guests have been stranded outside our house, waiting for several minutes and feeling frustrated, until thankfully they knock and someone hears them, or until they call our actual phone number (if they have it). The only solution is to remove the outer cover, which also exposes the battery. (Free battery, anyone?) Unfortunately I waited too long to install it, past the 1-year warranty period, otherwise I would have returned this device. Note: Although we do get motion alerts when someone's by the door, this is on our phones, and there are lots of false positives. We can't be constantly checking our phones to see if someone's at the door, because y'know, that's the whole point of having a doorbell.

We can definitely assist you with this today to ensure your Ring device is performing optimally and the proper settings are chosen within the Ring app.
It sounds like your in-home chime kit is not triggering when someone presses the doorbell button on your Ring Video Doorbell 4. Follow these instructions to automatically detect and configure your in-home chime:
Open the Ring app.
Tap the menu (☰).
Tap Devices.
Tap the doorbell you want to connect to a chime.
Tap Device Settings.
Tap In-Home Chime Settings.
Tap Automatic Chime Detection.
Wait for the Ring app to detect your in-home chime.
If a mechanical chime is detected, you may see the following message: “Is your Ring Doorbell wired to an in-home doorbell chime?” Choose “Yes, I have an in-home chime.”
Tap Ring my In-Home Chime.
Follow the instructions and push the button on your Ring doorbell.
If it doesn’t ring correctly, select one of these options: “My chime rang partially” or “My chime didn’t ring.”
The Ring app will adjust the device settings automatically and prompt you to test your doorbell again.
If the app is unable to detect an in-home chime, it will redirect to the start of the chime auto-detection process.

Now I can see any person as they approach my doorway or as they leave. Much better than before. The previous view was just not adequate to discern who was at the door. Now we can see who is there and carry on a conversation. Much better.

This doorbell said it works with preexisting chimes but it did not work with my chime when I hooked it up. If I take the battery back out, the chime will work. So I had to buy the ring chime so I can hear when someone rings my doorbell. That’s the only negative. The camera clarity is great and the mic is clear. It has a really wide angle and I can see a large area of my hallway in my building.
