You can get POE cameras with double the resolution for close to the price of one year of Ring cloud storage, and those cameras are compatible with Blue Iris, IP recording through VLC player, AND have an SD card slot. If local recording was available, it would be an OK product. Just get an arlo pro and have people use your existing doorbell.

Another solution would be to hardwire your Ring Doorbell to existing doorbell wires to provide the unit with a trickle charge. I installed the device and wthin a week, the battery died despite being "hard-wired". The settings were set to less than medium sensitivity. The battery took several hours to charge. I returned it but a year later and after talking to some friends who love their ring, I decided to give it a second chance and purchased "The Ring 2".

With the old system you could see who was at the door, but it required the user to go into the room where it was mounted, and then to go to the door to allow entry. This new system, in addition to ringing your existing doorbell, or a new one purchased from Ring, sends a signal to your cell phone or tablet. Immediately, you can see who is at the door, and if you wish talk with that person using their free phone or tablet app. And the quality of the picture is outstanding. Using either an iPad or iPhone you are immediately able to see who is at the door. Because of the wide angle lens on the camera, it is impossible for someone at the door to hide their identity. In addition, the video doorbell alerts the app when anyone walks in front of the doorbell. So even if the person does not ring the bell, you are aware that someone is at the door. You can then see the person without his/her knowledge, and determine whether further action is necessary for your safety.
