The phone line had to remain on the provider's modem, but the TV cable and router were hooked to our new modem. thus the need for the splitter. Our cable provider walked me through the process and after making a few minor adjustments to the phone code (on their end) everything worked fine.

Was having other problems with my Comcast rental modem. Comcast came and gave me a new modem. When I stopped using the Comcast rental and returned it to them, I found they had replaced my splinter, and my splinter was no longer there! Best Buy purchase was the better of the 2! But I no longer need the splinter. If and when I do again, I will buy from Best Buy.
