We had not done that which led to a 4 year old LG TV incurring a surge that trashed the TV. Spend the $20 it is worth it.

Excellent Surge Protector Strip

This power strip is also very nice because it comes with two USB slots, which makes it easy and more convenient for me when I have to charge my iPhone.

So far I have no products purchased by them fail. I needed this to hook up a desktop to that was a little further away from the desk it was located at. Works great.
