I do like the ROG Ally a lot. It is sleek and powerful and can play most of my games at decent settings. However, this first gen product from Asus has many flaws: 1) The SD card reader tends to fail very often (even with the latest updates) 2) The buttons sometimes get stuck 3) The joystick wears down quite easily because of the sharp edges of the RGB slot. You will find black paint in the RGB rings from the rubbing

I’ve had this a few weeks now and can say it was worth the money for me. I have not explored too much of the capabilities outside of gaming via Steam games and Epic. Typing on it has to be one of my biggest pet peeves. I’ve needed to force open the keyboard and have had other issues trying to type. Battery life is decent for the quality it can run off battery. While ok charge it runs very smooth when having settings turned more toward performance. Keep an honest view of it and I think you’ll be very satisfied.

I can play destiny 2 at 720p around 70-90 FPS. Wonderful Playing older titles at 60+ FPS is nice as well. I would recommend upgrading the SSD at some point if you play a lot of different games, as 512gb is pretty lacking. You will need a 2230 NVME.

Hands down this is the best alternative to a Nintendo Switch if you don’t like Nintendo games. I can use my entire PC catalogue with additional support from AMD/ROG. The only negative is that the graphics usually are set to medium if you want to play modern games at 30fps-60fps. Either way amazing handheld and worth the price.

It’s very strong and an excellent addition in the advancement of portable gaming. It’s powerful and does a lot of the important things right such as power, cooling, noise. But there are issues that most people would agree on in user interface and ease of access. It’s essentially windows 11 which has it’s pros and faults and while the armor crate UI I honestly think is strong, a lot does get left to be desired because of how it feels like it is dependent on keyboard and mouse optimization. But being real, you buy ut to play games and it plays them amazingly, very strong in a wide variety of platforms because of that windows 11 help and as a game pass machine it works amazing.

I am a very experienced long-time PC tinkerer. I am used to setting up computers, laptops, etc to get them to an absolutely perfect state. So getting this thing to a state where I really enjoyed using it was no problem for me. I also own a Steam Deck. That was pretty much ready to go almost instantly. It's a much more user-friendly device and most people should choose it instead. On top of a much better UI, it also has touch pads and a gyro sensor, meaning it has more control options. That being said, if you are experienced at tinkering with PCs, putting up with the Ally's downsides is 100% worth it to get the much more powerful APU (graphics and processor) and MUCH nicer screen.

Love it. Only thing that needs work is the interface. That's more on windows. Windows needs a handheld dedicated version. Also a short battery life when pushing the graphics. Games run great.

As someone who enjoys the tinkering and customizing aspect of setting up a new computer or device, personally i give this product a full 5 stars. If you're buying this with the expectation of jumping in and just gaming, then I'd suspect your rating might be closer to a 3.5 or 4. It is a great gaming device and more capable than the Steam Deck just about all around, but you have to remember it is a Windows device at the end of the day. That inevitably means dealing with Windows annoyances like popups, potentially malware/warnings if you arent careful about what you download and from where. Go watch some reviews and current videos on this device to see how it is, and how far its come. It isnt and likely wont ever be as "console-like" easy to use and set up as the Steam Deck or a Nintendo Switch, but hell if it isnt a powerful piece of kit!

Windows is biggest thing wrong with this

Windows, which was the main reason i bought the ally, is actually the worst part of the rog ally. Touch screen Windows is just very hard to use compared to steam deck. Also the keyboard should allow you to use the not sticks to type on the keyboard similar to steam deck but instead you have to take your hands off the edges of the ally and hold it on one hand while you touch keys on the ally keyboard. The screen looks fantastic and the sound system is great. But the above issues plus it just isn't as comfortable to hold as the steam deck.

The Ally runs games well and I like having a portable device that can run windows. But there are some concerns i have with the device, especially when comparing to the Steam Deck OLED. The battery life on the Ally just doesn’t compare to the Deck. And there’s other minor issues that happens where the Ally will not let me use the controller buttons when playing the game. It doesn’t happen often, but I might minimize a game to check something and when i return to the game, sometimes the controllers do not work immediately. This happens despite changing between the different Ally modes

I got my unit on release day. Setting up was a hassle. For context, I’m an avid PC builder and I dual-boot my SteamDeck. I also owned the original OneXPlayer and built countless Raspberry Pi handhelds. I’ve installed Windows at least 150 times in my life, so I’m familiar with the process. The thing that made it so arduous is that ASUS has their software updates spread out in multiple different pieces of software. Getting everything set up was far more work than a standard Windows install, and actually felt like more work than installing/customizing for dual-boot on the deck. Once I got everything installed/updated, it seemed like I got a good unit. No sticky buttons, or any of the other major complaints that other early adopters had. The reason I returned it was that it just came nowhere close to living up to the hype. It was faster than the deck, but with some major caveats. Mainly, the battery. The battery life is absolute garbage. That combined with the machine rendering extra pixels for its higher resolution screen means that you really aren’t going to get better performance than the SD out of this thing unplugged. Plugged in, it performs great, but there was still nothing that the Ally could do that the SD can’t. I made a point to test all of the games that I tried to get running on my SD but just wouldn’t run well enough. Some of them ran better on the Ally but none of them were good enough that I’d actually try to play them. At the end of the day, the Ally was just a redundancy to the Steam Deck that was more of a hassle to use. I might have kept it if I didn’t own a deck (I do like to tinker), but I knew after day one that it wasn’t going to replace the deck for me.

Purchased this on a cross country trip as i forgot my dock for my switch. This should not be asvertised as a gaming handheld. Its freaking windows 11. Horrible os. Plauged with same junk update after update u get on a pc. Bloated down on a weak handheld draining excess battery life. Not to mention when logging in it tried to sync to my home pc. Like why would anyone in the right mind want to sync a dinky 512gb hand held device to their home pc and waste massive amounts of space and time downloading useless programs for a hand held. Not designed with gaming 1st in mind. Windows needs to just stop. I despise apple and only use windows on pc but this is just invasive and inappropriate for a hand held. Cut all the bloated os crap and focus on gaming only. Period. If i wanna install office ill do it myself
