Great Device Before I Go To Bed

The last gaming handheld I owned was a Nintendo DS. I saw this came out earlier last year, but I was not interested in owning one until the black Friday sale came up, and I thought I would give it a go. Does this replace your gaming PC? Not for me, I have a PC with a 4090, and gaming on a PC with high graphics is a must for me. Don't get me wrong, this device is great when you have set expectations on what it can do.. it runs almost every game I throw at it with the appropriate settings. It's been getting updates from ASUS, and there are a lot of guides to get the best use out of this thing. The speakers on these things are fantastic... I'm a big headphone user for almost all devices, and the speakers on these are high quality as if I am wearing headphones. VRR is another nice feature to have as well as its able to sync the frames and able to show us smoother gameplay without any stuttering when frame dip occurs. It does come with a 512gb SSD which could be enough if you are trying to use this device every now and then and you primarily game on your PC like me but if you intend to use this as your main device, I would suggest getting a 2tb SSD wether it is 2230 or 2280 (there are tutorials on how to do this) but I upgraded to an SN770m 2230 when it was on a BF sale. Overall great product, very impressed with how far the tech has improved, and we are getting portable Windows gaming devices on these. The only cons are sometimes the keyboard popup when you try to log in can become a bit messy, but I guess that's just Windows 11 I haven't had any other issues other than that.

    Steam Deck supplement

I bought this to supplement my Steam Deck. Things that cannot be played on Steam Deck will be played on the Ally. The battery life is not great when playing at max cpu levels but neither is the Steam Deck. I wish it came with a case like the Steam Deck for the price but I will slap a Dbrand case on and not worry about it. Wanted something that I pick up quickly and play while the baby was napping or eating, playing a little bit then being able to put it away easy. Gaming on the go. It is not too heavy, rumble is enough and screen is great. So far cooling is no issue, this thing really kicks hot air out. Have not played any games to utilize the back buttons yet. They are large and get in the way some of the time. Windows 11 can be an issue, gets finicky. You will get used to what it likes and does not. Remember there are 3 places to do updates…Windows updates, Armoury Crate updates, and MyASUS updates.

Tldr, I wound up returning mine. The Ally is a great device if you know exactly what you're looking for in a handheld and you're willing to work around its potential issues. The big issues for me that eventually scared me away were the potential sd card issue, and Asus' consistency when it comes to updates and how they communicate them. For a device at this price, the risk of frying my sd card is just unacceptable, and it's an issue they still haven't entirely solved. Other things that aren't necessarily negatives but you may want to consider are the lack of a trackpad, which isn't so bad since the touchscreen is quite nice but would have been nice considering it's running windows, and the battery life. It's not a long lasting handheld but really with the performance you can get with it, especially at higher tdp settings, that's the tradeoff you have to make. That said, if the above doesn't matter to you it is a very nice device in all other aspects. It felt good in the hand, the speakers are surprisingly good, and the display is gorgeous.

Absolutely love it! Such an awesome combination with Xbox gamepass. I love the performance and touch screen responsiveness. The only downside is the battery life and possibility that it can cook your SIM card if you elect to expand your storage. I don’t use this as my primary system for gaming so the storage isn’t an issue for me but for others it might. I had to wait for it to drop in price.. retail price is pretty steep for this imo. I got it for $666 with a 2 year BB warranty. Without the waranty it probably would have been less than $600. Don’t remember. I recommend this!

So my husband bought me a wonderful gaming laptop last year it is amazing however i have a chronic illness that will 9/10 have me bed bound by 4 or 5pm. I dont even feel like messing with my laptop. That is where this baby comes in. A gift from my sweet sister, it runs so well. I usually leave it plugged up mostly because i do play baulders gate 3 on it. It runs perfectly however that is a powerful game so it runs alot of energy. This has been a game changer. It runs well, looks amazing. I have alot of games on it, and put in a sd card for more storage. If you want something light weight to lay in bed and play your pc games on highly recommended

As a gamer, the ROG Ally is a beast in a handheld form. The 7" 120Hz FHD display is crisp and buttery smooth, making even fast-paced games like Apex Legends or Call of Duty look incredible on the go. The AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme chip packs serious power, easily running AAA titles at high settings without major hiccups. It feels like having a mini-PC in your hands. The Windows OS means you’re not stuck with mobile ports or limited app stores; you can play most your Steam, Epic, or Game Pass library. It also means more flexibility with mods and customizations, which is a huge plus for PC gamers. The ergonomics are surprisingly comfortable, even for extended play, and the controls are responsive. My only complaint is that the battery drains quickly when pushing it hard. I would recommend the dbrand Killswitch case as it can significantly improve the ergonomics of the device. Overall, if you’re into portable gaming but want the power and flexibility of a PC, the ROG Ally is a great option. If you plan on being mobile for an extended time, make sure to bring a portable charger with 20,000mAh capacity and a 100w or more to support fast charging output so you can use turbo mode.

The Rog Ally is a powerful handheld based on windows. The integrated APU can keep up with most games so long as you manage your settings correctly. The unit I bought unfortunately has a dead SD card reader, but i ended up just replacing the internal m.2 SSD wth a 2tb drive for an extra hundred dollars. I'm not happy with the SD card reader, but it doesn't bother me enough to take it back. Getting into the device was relatively easy, and because it's x86 based, normal PC hardware works without needing any work arounds. I highly recommend that anyone with an Ally also pick up an external battery bank. Gaming on high settings will kill the battery in an hour and change. I've gone through a variety of battery banks with my Ally, and ultimately settled on a Power Add 50000. It's capable of running the device at the max power (30 Watts), and can charge it about 3.5 times. For the price ($50), you can't ask for more. All in all, the Ally is a great device if you want to really play on the go. At $600, you're getting a heck of a portable rig.

The Asus ROG Ally is a fantastic gaming PC that you can hold in your hands. It's equipped with an AMD Ryzen 7 6800U processor and 16GB of RAM, making it capable of handling even the most demanding games. The 7-inch 1080p display is sharp and vibrant, and the built-in speakers offer excellent sound quality. Additionally, the ROG Ally boasts a long battery life, allowing you to play for extended periods without worrying about running out of power. One of the standout features of the ROG Ally is its software. It runs on Windows 11, providing access to a wide variety of games and apps. You can also install custom drivers and software to optimize your gaming performance. However, the ROG Ally does have some drawbacks. The controller is not as comfortable as the one on the Steam Deck, and the battery life is not as impressive as that of some other handheld gaming PCs. Furthermore, the software can be a bit buggy at times. Overall, the Asus ROG Ally is an excellent handheld gaming PC. It offers power, portability, and long battery life. However, if controller comfort and flawless software are top priorities for you, it may be worth exploring other options. Here are some alternative handheld gaming PCs you might consider: Valve Steam Deck GPD Win 3 Aya Neo 2 OneXPlayer Mini These devices provide different features and benefits, so it's advisable to conduct thorough research before making a purchase. For me personally, I have to say that I'm really enjoying the Asus ROG Ally, and in my opinion, it far surpasses the competition. The gaming experience it provides is just on another level. The performance, coupled with its sleek design and impressive features, truly sets it apart. From the powerful hardware to the stunning display and immersive sound, every aspect of the ROG Ally seems to have been crafted with the gamer in mind. It has definitely exceeded my expectations and has become my go-to choice for portable gaming.

Best investment ever. As a middle aged gamer, I appreciate the ability to take PC level gaming anywhere! It does get a bit hot and I would highly highly encourage an SSD upgrade. At least 1 TB. I will be getting the Sabrent 2TB. Graphics are amazing. Framerate sits at around 45-55 for AAA titles even on high settings. IT CAN BE USED AS A PC REPLACEMENT. Nuff said.

So definitely some issues right, hop on reddit and you’ll see immediately that the micro SD card slot is useless because either software or hardware wise, no one knows for sure, your card becomes unreadable at some point. Could be 20 mins in could be 3 weeks. Definitely a bummer considering some of us aren’t interested in opening this guy to upgrade teSSD. Youll need to do some tinkering to settings out of the box, but armory crate does a solid job of helping with that. Theres some other windows settings you need to change as well to maximize performance but all quick fixes and nothing that same reddit thread cant help you find and do. In terms of gaming really wnjoyed most of the games i played oni. The onky one that wasnt great was cyberpunk but it was constantly getting 35-45 fps on 1080p with medium settings, so not bad, just not great. Rocket league, Fortnite, batman arkham city, COD, skyrim all played great and felt good. even used it to run some emulators with fantastic performance. The device really shines when it comes to that for sure. Flawless for any of the maybe 10 i ran. Overall a great gaming experience but battery life (less than an hour unplugged) and the SD card slot issue make it a 7.5 out of 10 experience. For 499.99 this thing would be an absolute steal. You just expect more for 700.

I had the Z1 Extreme version and while it played most of the games easily, the fans were loud and it got very hot. The right joystick started sticking and wasnt worth my time anymore. It was constantly crashing as well and rebooting so I returned it. I then went with an open box excellent Z1 version and its been such a delite. $200+ cheaper and it's been way more stable. It runs cooler and is not as loud as the Z1 Extreme I first had. I try not to pay attention to the, don't buy the non extreme version crowd. I have an xbox series x and ps5 if I want better graphics. The battery sucks bad but I got this to play with my kids while still being able to watch movies and sports on the big tv and it does just that, charger always near by. Games I play are Fortnite for the most part. I can't get Warzone to work on this device, it crashes my system constantly, was worse on the Extreme version. When it does work it looks and plays well. Just wish it was more stable. It's literally the only title that struggels on here. Palworld plays at low 30-40 fps as well, 720, low will get you close the 60 though. Played some Halo and it was nice and smooth low-mid settings. At the end of the day it's a great secondary device, don't expect insane performance at this price but do know it will handle current games just fine but just not at the higher settings the Extreme can.

Dont get me wrong; it does take some time to get it properly up and running, but once youve got it going, and even more so when you grow accustomed to it, it’s just amazing. It has ACTUALLY all but replaced my gaming laptop. I basically only use my gaming laptop for 3D modeling-related stuff. Is the battery the best ever? No, but neither is the one in the NINTENDO SWITCH, WHICH YOU CAN EMULATE on this thing. Its like… okay, so for me, its like the Gameboy Advance for “today’s kids.” The gameboy advance was my first portable gaming device when i was a kid, and i was just stunned i could play games like that on the go, and getting this device up and running, and playing my games on it - its like im reliving that experience for the first time again. Yes, a lot of people have returned them, but most of those people, i assure you, didnt know what they were actually buying and certainly didn’t know how to get it to where its supposed to be for the proper experience. All in all, id recommend this to ANYONE who likes portable gaming 100%. At this price point, while yes the Steam Deck is easier to use, there’s just isn’t anything quite like the Ally. Get it, give it some time for you to adjust to it and get it up and running - i can almost guarantee you, if you enjoy portable gaming, you WILL love… the ASUS ROG Ally.

Great handheld pc gaming console. Even though many had compare this Asus ROG ally to Lenovo Legion Go and Steam Deck Old. And keep saying those two is better in this way and that way. I would definitely said this is a great handheld as long as you don't use the SD card slot which some people keeps complains the heat will damage the card. And also the smaller battery which make the console lighter than other competitors Other than that, this device has many good point. You gotta remember first of all, it is a Windows console, and has a more powerful CPU compare to Steam Deck Oled. You can keep saying how steam deck can last longer and better screen. Steam is less powerful on CPU and steam OS has its limit on gaming. For Legion Go, it has a 8inch screen, bigger battery, which is not heavy than ROG Ally. same CPU with faster Ram can boost up the frame rate by up to 2 to 5 frames. Moreover people keep saying to connect a EGPU.. I just don't know if I get a egpu and connect it to my handheld, and also all those keyboard and mouse etc.. Why shouldn't I get a desktop or laptop? Portable is portable... You ask for all these function but at the end, no one will really get all these.. handheld gaming device will probably last for 2,3 years and that's it. The only thing I really wants to mention is the storage. 512GB is on the smaller sizes for games that's diatribe in last few years.

Would have gone for a steam deck but after reading reviews of how I have to install this and that to play the game that I love which were mostly EA and Ubisoft games and requires the anti cheat software I decided to go with the rog Ally and let me tell you this didn’t disappoint one bit from running the game to other things it’s a machine that runs it all. Love its portability only downside would probably be battery but now that I have tweaked a bit I can go 3 hrs on AAA games without compromising on game quality ok or frame rate. Awesome stuff!

In a saturated market, it is the best of its kind. Pros. It is durable. Great build quality. It plays every game. More power than a Steam deck. Windows. Cons. Gen 1 suffered from joystick issues, excessive heat near the top of the device and some software issues that are easy to fix. Windows.

Great handheld gaming PC. I've been able to play Plague Tale Requiem, RDR2, Last of us 1 on a stable framerate. If you're looking to play AAA games, make sure you get this one with the Z1 Extreme and not the regular Z1. The regular Z1 is not worth the money. Screen is nice for an IPS, though I'm usually upscaling from 720 or 900p and aiming for 40-60fps, so the 1080p 120hz seems like a waste on me. If you're into lower spec games like indie titles or esport titles that will likely be different. It's be nice to have had an OLED, but that would've driven the price point up It's a nice size and has a decent amount of power, though expect to fiddle with ram allocation in armoury crate and game settings a lot at the start. The speakers are honestly amazing. The joysticks are a bit "loose" and the battery life isn't great. You should also remember that it's a Windows PC in a handheld formfactor and not a console. You will have to run driver and OS updates, remove startup items, etc. All in all it's great. It got me back into PC gaming.

This is a powerful little device. I can play any game I want from any service and get decent frame rates and visuals. The screen is bright and vibrant. It feels solid in your hands. I have two complaints. The first, the ergonomics aren't great. After a while it can feel awkward in the hands. The angular design, while futuristic, can dig into your palms. My hands are a little on the small side and it can be feel uncomfortable at times. The Steam Deck does a better job of feeling good. The second, the battery is so so. Don't expect to get hours playing a AAA title without making some sacrifices like visuals, resolution etc. Some lower spec'd games will give you about 2 hours. Something like Assassin's Creed Valhalla will get you about 1. All things considered the fact that you can even run games like F122, Assassin's Creed, Red Dead Redemption etc on a device this size is an amazing feat of technology and engineering. I actually sold my gaming laptop I used when traveling because this device does exactly what I needed and wanted at 1/3rd the price. I would recommend this device to anyone who wants to game on the go. Just do yourself a favor and grab a 65w or 100w USB Battery. I use something from a company called Baseus. Gives me and extra 1 or 2.

This device is flippin awesome as long as you know what you're getting yourself into. If you're expecting this device to provide a completely seamless gaming experience similar to consoles or the Steam Deck then you'll probably come away a bit disappointed since Windows just isn't really set up to work well with this sort of portable game console use case. However, running Windows is also what allows this device to be almost infinitely flexible, allowing you to easily play games from Steam, Game Pass, Epic Games, or wherever else as well as pretty much any emulator. With some tinkering and configuration, you can get a really seamless gaming process on this thing. Performance is very strong (especially when plugged in), while keeping temps and noise levels surprisingly low. Battery life while AAA gaming is expectedly low (~1 hour if using turbo mode), but you can stretch it quite a bit in silent mode on less graphically intensive games. Build quality is very solid, device is lightweight and ergonomic to hold. The 1080p 120hz screen looks really good and gets really bright. Buttons/triggers and d-pad are great, however the thumbsticks are small and not very grippy (stick grips from skull n co greatly improve them). Audio from the speakers is also shockingly good, the Dolby software really makes them shine. It's also very easy to open up the device and do maintenance/upgrades, it took me only a few mins to swap in a 2TB SSD and could be done by someone with little technical knowledge. Overall highly recommend the ROG Ally, it's so awesome that a handheld like this can run pretty much any game imaginable! Thanks to Asus and AMD for making this happen!

Battery life could be better but overall it works really well. Games played: Hollow Knight, Palworld, Minecraft, Fortnite, Skyrim, Outer Worlds, and Mass Effect Legendary. All played as well as my main computer. The device came in clutch as I broke my ankles and couldn’t sit at my computer. If you want to game for an hour or two, it’s great but any longer and you might want to consider staying near an outlet.
