Got my first Ally in the mail, delivered to me but the LB was squishy and weird(even had a squeaky spring or something going on beneath the shell that felt like it was making it mushy), nothing at all like the RB. Returned it, but when I did so, it was on the 11th, device wouldn't be properly released til the 13th so had to wait some more. Picked up the new device and LB feels *better* but still kind of feels a little off(I'm just not sure why on two separate devices the LB feels off compared to the RB, it doesn't make sense) but still after a few presses it goes to feeling normal. So I can deal with it. But the B button... it presses down and if you're not that sensitive to the buttons you're pressing, it'll feel normal. I'm hyper sensitive to good controllers and pressing buttons and such(have mechanical keyboards and 100+ dollar controllers, I'm really picky). The B button specifically feels like there's just some slight misaligning of the button itself so the left side of the button doesn't press all the way down. If you roll your thumb over the face buttons and all around the edges of each, A, X, and Y feel as flat and unobtrusive as they should but the B feels like something's preventing it from going all the way flat on just the left side of it. It's very odd... but regardless, I had already set it up so much and downloaded so much that I don't even care anymore at this point. I bought the accidental in case one day the buttons decide to completely break apart or the analog sticks die from not being hall-based sensors. Besides THOSE issues, this device is honestly insane. If it's not able to handle 60 at medium or high at 1080p, it'll most definitely handle it on 720 with punchier colors that blow the steam deck's washed out colors out of the water. The speed and silence of the machine is super nice as well, I didn't think I'd care that much but they're great in comparison. Windows 11 is... windows 11, it doesn't surprise me as a long time user of the operating system but I like how it's slowly attempting to realize that it's being used on a touch screen handheld device(by making touch based gestures and such more user friendly and what have you, you'll see what I mean when you first turn it on compared to something like the OneXplayer or Ayoneo). Emudeck runs perfectly on it and it plays switch games even better than the actual switch so that's a major plus for me honestly(along with PS3 classics). Battery life is abysmal but for playing less intensive games, you could easily run it on "silent" profile and still get a solid 40-60fps on most 2d titles(bastion, disco elysium, etc) and preserve your battery life. I was already prepared to play this thing constantly connected to a power supply of some sort but yeah. All in all, it's an amazing device and I can't wait for the predecessors to blow it out of the water in the future. I could easily see this device(assuming the bottons and sticks don't start dying on me) lasting a good 2-3 years with more and more optimizations and updates to the system.

Set up was a breeze and it is amazing to have access to any and all games on the go with a dedicated system. The battery is its only downside as the power consumption is quite high depending on the game, but for the price between the Ally X and this, the battery size is perfect.

Overall a really good device, performance is better than the steam deck a lot. The window 11 isn't that bad especially with Asus own unique way to having the device to navigate relatively easier. Only issue, I have my microsd card reading isn't detecting microsd correctly. It would want to format them but doesn't see them anymore after formatting it, but the micro sd card works fine on other devices. Other than that! I love it! They are times you will encounter issue, but if you are in IT or have a good understanding of technology. You will be able to resolve most issue, if not google is your friend.

I love this toy. It's stylish, elegant, yet powerful under the hood. It pretty much handled every game I threw at it. My best compliment goes to the Asus Rog Ally website game library that lists exact settings that would be perfect to play each game on the Ally X. Additionally, there's a lot of game performance automation that makes them run better in Turbo. Battery life is great, and having Windows 11 is a great extra.

I love this product, but you do have to be somewhat familiar with Windows to enjoy it. As others have mentioned, budget about 1-3 hours (depending on your internet speed) for updates/setup when you first turn it on. Once that's done, it's a great little PC and the controls were awesome. I know battery life isn't great but I haven't really been using this outside my home so it's not a complaint at this time. The screen is very sharp and the speakers are surprisingly loud and clear. I am currently playing Diablo 4 and am very happy with the performance. I am going to try this in dock mode next connected to PC monitor! I highly recommend this little gaming PC, but yeah be forewarned that this is not a Nintendo Switch, you should ideally be familiar with how Windows PC works!

    Break from reality

It was the Ally or Steamdeck. I chose the Ally because it ran Windows natively and I was looking for something that could replace my now seldomly used Gaming PC. As an adult with typical “adult problems” I never had much time to sit and game, I was always needed or something needed my attention. Since owning my Ally I can now game on the fly and still be productive. The Ally wasn’t meant to be used as a workstation but it can definitely handle simple to mild demanding tasks. It has been less than a month since release and there are plenty of resources out there to fix any issues that you may be seeing reviewers talk about. I would recommend to any adult that still games but has little time to game! Life gets busy but that doesn’t mean we don’t deserve time to break away from reality.

I couldn’t decide between the different models but after having many years of using ROG Devices, I choose to give it a chance and it’s awesome! Super fast and plays many of the favorites with ease. Additionally, it has no problem playing steam games. Only issue I’ve come acrossed is with Starfield however, it’s a Microsoft issue not a game or device is. With the recent Windows update, if you try to load Starfield, it says the graphics card drivers are out of date but they aren’t. Because of this, the game does sometimes crash. I’m hoping Microsoft fixes this issues as I do love Starfield. Side Note - This ROG Ally was able to play Starfield with no issues other than mentioned above.

Excellent alternative to the Steam Deck

Handheld Pcs have been around a long time, but a mass market option was never fully embraced until the Steam Deck. While the SD was great, the form factor and additional effort to run games outside the Steam ecosystem made me excited to see what the competition would come up with. So we have the ROG Ally. Looks like a SD and Zephyrus had a baby. More comfortable to hold, flashier build, better screen, Xbox style controller layout, Windows 11, more power - pretty much everything you could want in a portable PC handheld. It’s amazing. After a couple of hours of updates it runs everything. Diablo 4 runs great, MWII is smooth, Steam games are perfect for the most part. Overall this is a very impressive first attempt from Asus, and I can’t wait to see how Valve responds with their next iteration.

So happy I got this, has lived up to all my expectations and then some. The hard drive is pretty small but I bought a 2 TB drive knowing this and first thing I did was swap the 500 gig one out. I've been kind of staying away from best buy, had purchased something for $299 years ago and found out I couldn't use it but when I went to return it (still unopened) they said they can't because it was past 30 days, told the employee I'm going to exchange it and spend another $800 but still wouldn't do it for me, that was the last time I used Best Buy but I'm very happy I recently went back. The best buy employee took the time to get it for me and was very helpful. Seen a couple other products I'll probably be returning for in the near future.

Best handheld PC I've owned so far, better than the Steam Deck. Great connection to peripherals, Windows based operating system allows me to download more than just Steam. Can run Ubisoft and Blizzard clients as well as Epic Games store with no issue. Graphics are one of the bright spots on this device, you're not looking at setting all the settings to HIGH or ULTRA, however for the size and screen they'll deliver a punch. The screen is one of the best things about this device. High refresh rate, increased brightness and easy of use allow it to make gaming very easy.

When I purchased this product, I couldn’t wait to open it and get started. I never experienced a better handheld device in my entire life and I’m so thankful that the ROG was my first one. It was the fastest I’ve ever used and I used a lot of computers in my life. This by far was the most advanced that I ever used. I would recommend buying it because not only can you play all sorts of video games, but you can surf the web on the go! Great purchase and I don’t regret it.

Do you love gaming on a PC but have a wife and kids?? This powerful handheld gaming PC is perfect for you! The console has been a blast and have been neglecting my gaming rig in the game room and have been playing in bed next to my wife. Is it perfect? No. This system will fry almost all modern SD cards due to the poor heat dissipation around the SD card reader. Does it come with the usual Windows 11 jank? Yes. But if you are used to Windows you will know how to deal with the hang ups.

This product has been one of my favorite purchases I've made in the last few years. Although there is heavy competition amongst MSI and Lenovo, such as the claw for example, it has been a pleasing experience. As long as you are willing to make small compromises dependent upon the game you play, (fps, resolution, etc.) it will play whatever title you throw at it as well as AAA games. The User interface is much better in comparison to its rivals. You can find one likely in open box condition, although you should run a full diagnostic test on the model(double check the analog sticks, as they diagnostic won't show up whether or not they work well), as well as buy hall effect joy sticks and a great dock and/or skin for the device for a better long run experience. I recieved a defective unit my first purchase and a death in the family around the time of purchase, and my local BestBuy manager gave me a new model after signing up for membership even though it was an item purchased beforehand. He worked with me very well on this and was very understanding. Know you will make small compromises here and there when buying this and only game for up to 3-4 hrs without a power source. However, if you go into it eyes-open it can replace your PS4, PS5, Steam Deck, and PS Portal. Its a wonderful device. However, you should definitely educate yourself on the basics of gaming computers beforehand. This was my entry into the gaming community, and I am already shopping for the laptop to pair it with. Definitely consider the BestBuy Plus membership for $50/year, as it is a godsend being able to purchase open box items with a 60 day warranty. You wont regret it. Just remember, THIS IS NOT A NINTENDO SWITCH OR XBOX, it is a portable(and powerful) gaming laptop configured in the manner of a controller.

Great design, right size and weight. Performance better than I expected. Windows is not the best OS for this form factor but with Xreal glasses and Bluetooth keyboard this becomes a very decent desktop computer. For retro gaming this is a perfect platform. Emudeck handles most of the heavy lifting. Battery life could have been better but I am more than happy especially since I carry a 65W batter pack with me which doubles the play time.

    High Capability Meets Challenging Usability

The ASUS ROG Ally stands out as a remarkable piece of hardware, boasting impressive capabilities that are sure to catch the eye of any tech enthusiast. Its performance is top-notch, with hardware that can handle demanding applications and games with ease. The visuals are crisp and smooth, making for an immersive experience whether you’re gaming or handling intensive tasks. However, the device is not without its challenges. One significant issue is the time-consuming configuration process. Setting up the ROG Ally and getting it ready for use is not as straightforward as one might hope, requiring a considerable amount of time and effort. This can be a bit of a deterrent for those who prefer a more plug-and-play experience. Additionally, the machine’s heavy reliance on Windows presents its own set of problems. While Windows is a versatile operating system, it doesn’t always translate well to a gaming-focused device like this. Installing and running games outside of a dedicated store can be frustratingly difficult, especially with the built-in controls. This aspect certainly detracts from the user experience, as it limits the device’s potential and accessibility. In conclusion, the ASUS ROG Ally is a piece of hardware with great potential, boasting high-end capabilities. However, its user experience is hindered by a cumbersome setup process and an over-reliance on Windows, which complicates the gaming experience outside of conventional avenues. It’s a device that could reach greater heights with some tweaks to its usability and software integration.

Bought this on sale open box over the Steam Deck because it is significantly more powerful, and the size is still compact unlike the Legion Go. The 120Hz VRR display is great and the storage can easily be upgraded with a large 2280NVMe SSD (I put a 2TB in mine). I tested the SD card reader and mine is already fried so be mindful of that, but it's not a feature I cared about. It runs games like Cyberpunk 2077, Forza, and Starfield with ease. Windows takes some getting used too on a device like this, but Asus's software makes it a much better experience. Very happy with my purchase as I've finally found the handheld that meets my needs.
