Upgraded from the Steam Deck and its definitely an upgrade. The power of the device is womderful! Only downside is the battery life. But being plugged in isnt too much of a hassle.

Love it. Only thing that needs work is the interface. That's more on windows. Windows needs a handheld dedicated version. Also a short battery life when pushing the graphics. Games run great.

Windows, which was the main reason i bought the ally, is actually the worst part of the rog ally. Touch screen Windows is just very hard to use compared to steam deck. Also the keyboard should allow you to use the not sticks to type on the keyboard similar to steam deck but instead you have to take your hands off the edges of the ally and hold it on one hand while you touch keys on the ally keyboard. The screen looks fantastic and the sound system is great. But the above issues plus it just isn't as comfortable to hold as the steam deck.

    Rog ally z1 extreme

I got the z1 extreme while it was on sale. 100 $ off. Highly recommend this version if your doing more than indie gaming. Amongst my vast steam and Ubisoft libraries of games only one game has not worked with the control pad and requires keyboards and mouse. I’m sure someone more familiar could figure it out. The build is good though I wish there was more palm grip. A bit more meat to hold onto. Fixing that with a case from skull n co. Hearing of the potential as card failure problems I immediately updated to the 2 tb max ssd. So no problems losing data. Highly recommend this. Fix was not difficult with a cheap tool kick with some picks to pry it apart gently. I enjoy the windows software so far. Not really any issues.

PERFECT if you're okay with tinkering

As someone who enjoys the tinkering and customizing aspect of setting up a new computer or device, personally i give this product a full 5 stars. If you're buying this with the expectation of jumping in and just gaming, then I'd suspect your rating might be closer to a 3.5 or 4. It is a great gaming device and more capable than the Steam Deck just about all around, but you have to remember it is a Windows device at the end of the day. That inevitably means dealing with Windows annoyances like popups, potentially malware/warnings if you arent careful about what you download and from where. Go watch some reviews and current videos on this device to see how it is, and how far its come. It isnt and likely wont ever be as "console-like" easy to use and set up as the Steam Deck or a Nintendo Switch, but hell if it isnt a powerful piece of kit!

Love the Ally. Works great. Like the title says I can play starfield. It plays well no stuttering or issues. You can't play at the higher graphic settings but it looks great on the 7 inch screen.

    Worth the hassle

The beauty of a steam deck is that it just works. The Ally, being based around a Windows OS, means that day to day use comes with more bugs and quirks, but overall its worth the added effort to have the flexibility. The extra processor power with rhe extreme chip doesn't just feel like an upgrade, it's borderline required for a good experience. I wouldn't recommend going with the slower processor, even if it costs you battery life. When it's working well the ROG Armoury is a fine games launcher, but sometimes it's easier to just open Steam or Epic. Where the system loses points for me is the mechanics of using Windows. The touchscreen is a saving grace of the system as it the windows experience does not translate to joysticks. If Asus could reslly focus on getting this part of the system right, it would be the clear best gaming handheld. But it's still worth the hassle.

I got my unit on release day. Setting up was a hassle. For context, I’m an avid PC builder and I dual-boot my SteamDeck. I also owned the original OneXPlayer and built countless Raspberry Pi handhelds. I’ve installed Windows at least 150 times in my life, so I’m familiar with the process. The thing that made it so arduous is that ASUS has their software updates spread out in multiple different pieces of software. Getting everything set up was far more work than a standard Windows install, and actually felt like more work than installing/customizing for dual-boot on the deck. Once I got everything installed/updated, it seemed like I got a good unit. No sticky buttons, or any of the other major complaints that other early adopters had. The reason I returned it was that it just came nowhere close to living up to the hype. It was faster than the deck, but with some major caveats. Mainly, the battery. The battery life is absolute garbage. That combined with the machine rendering extra pixels for its higher resolution screen means that you really aren’t going to get better performance than the SD out of this thing unplugged. Plugged in, it performs great, but there was still nothing that the Ally could do that the SD can’t. I made a point to test all of the games that I tried to get running on my SD but just wouldn’t run well enough. Some of them ran better on the Ally but none of them were good enough that I’d actually try to play them. At the end of the day, the Ally was just a redundancy to the Steam Deck that was more of a hassle to use. I might have kept it if I didn’t own a deck (I do like to tinker), but I knew after day one that it wasn’t going to replace the deck for me.

I do like the ROG Ally a lot. It is sleek and powerful and can play most of my games at decent settings. However, this first gen product from Asus has many flaws: 1) The SD card reader tends to fail very often (even with the latest updates) 2) The buttons sometimes get stuck 3) The joystick wears down quite easily because of the sharp edges of the RGB slot. You will find black paint in the RGB rings from the rubbing

Pretty good. It can run a lot of different games, depending on what you want to play and I love the customization of it, how in game you can easily adjust things like the brightness, the power draw etc. I will say it is a little pricey so if you're able to get a deal on it of some sort I would say get it then and to not pay full price and the battery does drain pretty fast, but I'm usually in my bed playing it anyway so its not a big deal as I can play with it plugged in or just play for a short time. Overall I think its really great and I love you can download multiple launchers to play whatever game you want, I would recommend getting this when you can

The Ally runs games well and I like having a portable device that can run windows. But there are some concerns i have with the device, especially when comparing to the Steam Deck OLED. The battery life on the Ally just doesn’t compare to the Deck. And there’s other minor issues that happens where the Ally will not let me use the controller buttons when playing the game. It doesn’t happen often, but I might minimize a game to check something and when i return to the game, sometimes the controllers do not work immediately. This happens despite changing between the different Ally modes

It requires more setup than I initially thought, but the screen is great and it’s a fantastic little computer. A lot of the growth required for the device is because of how new it is. I’m sure later down the year much of the software will improve.

From reviews online my expectations were low. So when I unboxed it and instantly became obsessed with it, it shocked me. Everuthing about this works great and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a hand held. I already recommended it to both my uncle and other close family as I was so happy with the experience. This is definitely for someone who has experience with tech though. I would not give this to anyone who might struggle with editting settings in BIOS or making sure your drivers are up to date. These experience were both smooth and efficient. However its not for someone new to those subjects.

I really enjoyed playing with this product. Couple of things to consider is that it is heavy and you can get tired holding it. Second the battery life is not impressive. Depending on the games you wanted to play battery can last for AAA games near to 1 hour and 30 min. If you play some retrogames i heard that you can definitely pass the 2 hours with the silent profile that uses only 10W. I actually returned because for the price I believe that is better to get a gaming laptop or build a desktop. For retrogames and casual playing I recomend Steamdeck. I went for the route of building a gaming desktop.
