The idea of a handheld gaming PC is a great one, but Valve’s offering really just does not have the horsepower to make good on that proposition. While it still has a lot of compromises and unstable performance, the ROG Ally has given me an experience that has been more in line with what I was led to expect on the Steam Deck. Windows hasn’t been an issue after setting the sleep button to Hibernate, as the Big Picture feature of Steam has essentially always been a SteamOS emulator. In summary, this product is what the Steam Deck advertises itself as, and unlike the Steam Deck itself, nothing less.

Owned for 2 months when reviewed.This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I buyed a open box rog ally z1 extreme and i have almost two months with it, and i love it, have a really nice performance, can run everything, obviusly with the right adjustments graphics, have some small weakness but is becouse of the windows system, and battery time, it is not for everyone, becouse you need to know about windows, but if you are familiarize with pc you gona love this device.

Would jump to 100C when running user benchmark. Thermals are very tight in this form factor. I would love to have windows 10 installed instead of windows 11. For what it is, it’s worthwhile. But battery last way too short to really be a functional on the go gaming handheld.

||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.A decent handheld, I can play GTA 4 and 5 with RagePluginHook/with Mods, Hogwarts Legacy, WarHammer Space Marine 2, any Assassin’s Creed, Red Dead 2, etc. You get my point, only complaint is the battery, if its going to be advertised as something portable or “on the run” it should have that battery for that duration of use, it’s more about honesty because it is a handheld at the end of the day and I never had any strong expectations for the battery.

But currently, windows handhelds have a lot of room for improvement. Mainly in the battery department. The screen is good and the speakers sound nice. A major downside of this device is the horribly joystick dead zone. This is not a good device for shooters. IMO, the Ally is the best PC handheld but the concept needs time to mature

There are some bugs need to be fixed. User experience in docked mode is not good. I like the overall design but if there is a gen 2 in the future, I would love a second USB-C

I want to like it but the battery life is terrible, it's not great and has stutters, it's lacking in places I assume newer models are more well rounded. I sold mine after having it 7 months

This is his first gaming handheld so I made sure I got the extra warranty. Overall it’s not a bad handheld, good price, plays all types of games (low to mid settings), the battery life could be improved. I ended up returning it after the sad card reader burned out and the battery died. It stopped turned on about 8 weeks after I bought it. I ended up using the money to get one of the Xbox ally

Battey life and game performance drop quite a bit when unplugged. I returned the system after 10 days. My memory card stopped working and my joystick started drift a lot. Great idea and if they fix some of the issues I may get one again but I did not feel like helping Asus work or the bugs.

In the home i stream games too it via Moonlight and with wifi 6 and AV1 encoding/decoding the latency practically non existent! Outside the home being able to load up FFXIV when im on wifi has been a game changer! Offline games are of course much easier to deal with. The other day inwas at Disney world and while waiting for a show i was able to quickly check my retainers in FFXIV and send them on ventures! Loved that. Playing lying in bed, fantastic, the Z1 Extreme is wuite powerful, and Asus has been committed to improving this device which is fantastic!

Generally getting 60-70fps on medium settings for most games. Have played Halo Infinite, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Need For Speed, and a few others with great results. Depending on the wattage you’re using, the battery life can be pretty short (I’ve been seeing just under 2 hour times), but the 65w charger gets this thing fully charged in 60-90 minutes. Important to update the drivers manually from the Asus website (Armory Crate doesn’t find everything for some reason), but once that’s done, this thing hums. I cloned and replaced the factory ssd with a 2tb ssd to make more space for games without needing to mess with micro sd cards. It was a super easy swap. Love how repairable this thing is! Overall, would recommend.

Being able to seamlessly use and play all of my game pass games while not having to look for a workaround like on the deck has greatly improved my experience. The build quality and feel is also great big thumbs up.
