There are some teething problems but don't get lost in the negative chatter. This is a fantastic portable gaming device. I've been waiting to have something like this for 20+ years and its finally here. The ROG Ally can play (nearly) ANYTHING! I'm playing old-school PC games, console games with emulation and new games with Xbox Game Pass and Steam. With this level of flexibility come some tweaking though. So if you're looking for a device that is open, download and play without any customization or some small things to work around, this device is not for you. Otherwise, get it!

So, I have had a Steam Deck for about a year and I think I am enjoying this more, but I will say the Steam Deck feels a little better in your hand, and is much easier to get running. The catch though, once you get this running how you want, it can run a lot more, most things better, and not have to play with compatibility work arounds. The buttons and hand fit on the ROG Ally is not quite as nice as the deck, but still good enough where I am more than fine. The screen is also noticeably nicer. In the end, I think the semi-tech savvy will like the Ally, and once they hone the software even more it might be a casual contender too.

The ASUS ROG Ally is a formidable device that offers a superior gaming experience compared to the Steamdeck. Its lightweight design, quiet operation, and Windows-based operating system provide enhanced versatility and compatibility with various gaming platforms such as Xbox Game Pass, Steam, and Epic. The Z1 Extreme version of the ASUS ROG Ally is highly recommended for its exceptional performance and portability, making it an ideal choice for gamers seeking a powerful and compact handheld gaming device.

Low battery life, full Windows on mini screen...

So the battery life is pretty bad. 2 hours at best, with 720p, 10w silent mode and 60hz refresh rate. That's with 2d titles btw. More demanding games only go 45 minutes or so. Still, I like where the handheld PC scene is going but IMO it's not a good purchase just yet if you want to take this thing out of the house. Or away from a power outlet at all for that matter. I know that this is a full on Windows handheld, but it's still competing with all the other handhelds out there, even if they don't run Windows. Also, using a full Windows installation on a screen this small is maddening. You will need a dock to use a mouse/keyboard on an actual monitor to set things up without frustration. Armoury Crate tries to remedy this with big button shortcuts but you still gotta use Windows Explorer to make shortcuts for the games that it can't find... I found myself having to dock and use a monitor way too often for the handheld to be worth it. Also a 512gb SSD at this price point along with the widely reported SD card reader issue are worrying. Shouldn't have to use an external card reader on a device this expensive, come on! I suggest waiting for the tech to get there before seriously considering a Windows handheld. Hardware is perfect (except analog sticks, no hall effect here), but the battery life and storage issues are worrying.

Sound stood out to me as an audiophile, compared to the Legion Go or even my Razer Blade. Screen looks sharp and performance is as solid as the Go. My only gripe, and the reason I use my Go over the Ally is the overall feel and screen size. The ally feels cheaper, more like a toy than a handheld console.

Want to play your PC games on the go. Get one of these. It is better than a Steam Deck with it's higher resolution and refresh rate as well as it's ability to play games from other services like Epic and Xbox. I have played Red Dead Redemption 2, Forza 5, Control, and many others with excellent results. The Rog Ally has fantastic audio from the built in speakers as well. The only issue I have with it is the short battery life, so getting a good battery bank is a great addition. If you like PC gaming and travel a log, get this instead of a gaming laptop.

To me it is more convient than a laptop, but it can operate as one especially if you dock it to a monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

Games very well considering its a mobile device, love the flexibility that a full win11 build offers. My main complaint is the battery life, which isnt great. If you want peak performance you are tethered to the wall, which defeats the purpose of a portable system. Its great for gaming while traveling in a hotel room for example. Overally pleased with my purchase.

Gaming Pc on the go. Initial setup was a bit difficult and it froze one time, had to force shut down. Plays most games with tweaks and better performance than the steam deck. Great screen and speakers. I like the design and ergonomics. Wish it came with a case like the steam deck, and the official Asus cases is overpriced for a soft case. Overall I'm satisfied with the Ally despite the SD card reader issue (which I haven't experienced but a lot of people are).

Boot and load times are super fast. Graphics are excellent and the screen size is perfect for mobile gaming. Device is a tiny bit heavy which is surprising with such a short battery life. About 1 hour of Diablo 4 on about 40% screen brightness and graphics settings turned down. Wouldn't want to hold it much longer than that anyway. I turned off the distracting button LED lights to try to conserve some power. The battery life sort of kills it for me, but it's still good for a short round of play unplugged.

This is a really fun device. I’ve been enjoying this for the month or so. I love the versatility of this handheld (my friends call it an LS Swapped Switch). Battery life is less than desirable… give it a couple hours at best and less than an hour at worst. That would be the only thing I would change, a larger battery. Screen is creat, controlls feel great, love gyro control (got used to that on my switch). Love it!

The ASUS ROG Ally is one of the best purchases I have ever made. I can play all my favorite games on the go, play on the couch, play on the bed, play on the plane, whatever. Wherever I take this device I am always getting questions about it by curious folks. I show them it can play Halo, Battlefield, Call of Duty and they are just in awe. As soon as I show them Emulation games they swear they have to purchase it now. The build quality is fantastic and that screen just makes games pop.

The Ally is a handheld device that runs a desktop (and/or laptop) OS. There’s clunkiness there for sure. The battery life is LOL. But gosh darn it if I don’t love it! I’m playing all my games on it at high FPS. The controls feel great. I love being to launch Steam, Xbox, Epic and Battlenet from the same device while laying back on the couch. Also, ASUS keeps cranking out software fixes/updates so it feels more and more streamlined (maybe too generous of a word for now). In sum, the device has issues but, like Joo Lee, it does the thing. If you’re looking for a gaming handheld then this is an excellent option

So out of the box I was extremely impressed, the ROG Ally feels great in the hand. I booted it up and everything felt familiar. I've owned it for five months now and I have to say I love this thing. It plays AAA games just fine and with the upcoming addition of AFMF 2 from AMD it'll get even better. I absolutely recommend the ROG Ally if you're looking for a great all around handheld.

I bought a Used ALLY and it ended up breaking on me, But when it was still useable it was a very enjoyable experience. The screen is very nice and the useability and mending ability to activate whatever settings you want was really nice.

Awesome little hybrid device where you can use it as handheld or desktop when docked. I wish they come in color black instead of just white. The chassis get dirty easily. + The screen is nice and bright. + Fan noise is quieter than most gaming laptops i have touch. + Amazing performance for its size. - The included "stand" is a joke. - It is bigger than expected. Recommend checking in person first - Very poor battery life out of the box. - Only one USBC port

I wasn't even in the market for this, but with everyone talking about it, I decided to do my own research. After a few days, I decided it would likely outdo my laptop so I'd give it a go. What an amazing little handheld. It comes with a full Windows 11 OS with overlays made by Asus. Whatever you can load onto Windows can be loaded on here. It's incredibly intuitive and user-friendly. The comfort is right where it needs to be. If I had to list any cons, it does get pretty hot and the battery drains pretty quick when you're running on performance settings. Clearly, both of those would be expected. Overall, very happy.
