ROG Ally - a worthy portable PC

Overall I would not recommend this as an upgrade to a steam deck; however, if you're trying to get a handheld PC for the first time this one offers a lot of things that the Deck doesnt. For one, it can play any windows game natively - no need to worry about compatability. The screen is higher resolution and it looks quite a bit better than the Deck's. That said, you do have to deal with Windows and sometimes that can be a bit Janky. For what's its worth, not nearly as janky as I've found it on a full desktop - it's still the same operating system but seems to work smoother. I do recommend the machine is solid, plays anything I throw at it and I personally like it's design better than the Deck. The sticks and buttons could be a little better - but that's aobut it.

So far its working well. I bought a used one but from the looks nothing is wrong with the unit. With some minor tweaking it can run most games I throw at it. Windows is a bit of a pain to navigate since the screen is so small and I have to use the thumbstick but the armory crate app alleviates this once your games are installed. Games are so large you'll need to add storage space to the 512 if you plan on playing many different games.

Amazing handheld. Display is good, onboard software is good (Windows could be better but that's on Microsoft), controls and general construction is solid. My only real gripe is the battery life, but honestly, purchasing something that puts out this much power in such a small form factor, you have to know that you're getting a few hours tops off of a single charge. I would recommend getting a "good" power supply (I ended up getting an Anker online for like 90 bucks).

I’m quite happy with this handheld pc. Can play most of the AA games easy. Get a dock station and it will become even better. It’s not 5 stars because of the known issue with the sd card reader and the initial windows setup can be painful without an external keyboard and mouse. The battery life is really correlated with what games you play, so don’t expect a long battery life when playing 3A games with high quality and frame rates.

It gives you the mobility away from your PC for gaming. Great little device that packs a punch. Battery life isn’t the greatest on demanding games but its nothing a power bank can’t solve.

Fantastic little portable PC gaming console. It's a powerhouse for gaming and I avoided the storage issue by immediately replacing the SSD with a 2TB NVME. It was a very simple and straightforward process. The only complaint I have is the same one that every other person has... The battery life is absolutely garbage. With the announcement of the RoG Ally X, this would be a pointless purchase right now.

I wish I could give 6 stars. Make sure you get the "Z1 Extreme" model. This lil dude is what the Steam Deck wishes it was. I literally get better Warframe performance on this than my Xbox Series X, and it runs CoD like a champ. Being realistic, you'll get about an hour of true battery, but you're not really going to be away from power for that long in 2024. Highly recommend pairing it with a 5G brick and a decent Anker battery, because then you basically just have a gaming PC wherever you want. This thing is also excellent in airports and hotels

I was so excited to see the Steamdeck have some competition, and ASUS did not disappoint with the ROG Ally. I was expecting a gaming system, but I was not expecting it to quite literally be a portable PC in a handheld form. When turning on, you're brought right to your desktop screen for Windows! I have yet to find something that works on my laptop and not on the handheld Ally. I am very impressed with how quiet the cooling system is. I typically do not even notice when the fans come on, unlike my PC, which sounds like a jet engine taking off. The visuals are spectacular and the screen goes much brighter than any other handheld system I have owned. This handheld, similar to the Switch, is also compatible with a number of controllers and docking devices so it can be played on a bigger screen. There is also a micro SD card slot to add memory to play even the biggest games, additionally with no lag! The speed is very compatible with my gaming laptop. My absolute favorite feature here is Armoury Crate! It is specific to the ROG Ally and helps keep all of your PC games in one place, whether it is from Xbox Game Pass, Steam, GOG, etc.

I love this thing. It is surprisingly light (just about identical to the Switch), and in my opinion feels much more comfortable in my hands than the Switch ever did. I’ve been playing Cyberpunk on it, graphics turned down to medium settings but it looks really good on the screen. The battery lasts only about 60 to 90 minutes with a game like this but I have it plugged in most of the time. Since it is a Windows machine it is very easy to get around the OS. The Armory Crate app from Asus finds all the games installed regardless of platform and helps optimize them for gameplay controls. The screen is very bright and clear as well.

Just got mine a day ago. I love it so far! My only gripe would be the battery life. But thats litterally my only gripe. It still earns 5 stars from me deapite the batter life. I knew something ao high ce shoukdnt be expected to run a full day on a charge. Im getting 50 to 40 fps on most of my games with the graphics turned up to high. Turning them down some i do save batter life. The speakers are surprisingly good. Clear sound and will. The controls are great and i am already taking advantage of the controller maping form a lot of games. Some people have a problem with it not having touch pads. Thats not a bug deal. Just use the touch screen if you lose the cursor. All in all. I love this device and i woukd reccomend to anyone.

The Rog Ally is smaller and lighter than most other pc handhelds, but is still pretty powerful with the Z1 Extreme processor. The screen, speakers, and controls are all great. Since it runs windows 11, you can play online games like fortnite and call of duty that dont work on steam deck and other handhelds that dont support anti-cheat.

So far so good. It plays all the games I currently want to play. The battery life is a little low, but I am primarily playing on the couch or in bed, so it doesn't matter too much. It does take a decent amount of accessories to make docking it worth it, but it's nice to have a fairly portable machine that can run all my steam games and more.

I recently purchased the ASUS ROG Ally 7" 120Hz FHD 1080p Gaming Handheld in White, and I must say, I am extremely impressed with its performance and features. Firstly, the design of the handheld is sleek and stylish. The white color gives it a premium look, and the build quality feels solid and durable. The 7" display is vibrant and sharp, with a 120Hz refresh rate that provides smooth and fluid gameplay. The AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme Processor is a powerhouse, delivering excellent performance for gaming. The handheld handles even the most demanding games with ease, thanks to its powerful processor and 512GB of storage. I have not experienced any lag or slowdowns during gameplay, which is a huge plus. The controls on the ASUS ROG Ally are well-designed and responsive. The buttons and joysticks feel comfortable to use, and the handheld also features a touchpad for added convenience. The placement of the controls is ergonomic, allowing for extended gaming sessions without discomfort. Battery life is another area where this handheld excels. I was pleasantly surprised by how long the battery lasted, even during intense gaming sessions. It easily lasts for several hours, which is impressive considering the power-packed performance it offers. One of the standout features of the ASUS ROG Ally is its connectivity options. It supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, allowing for seamless online gaming and easy pairing with other devices. The handheld also features a USB-C port for charging and data transfer, as well as an HDMI port for connecting to a larger display. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with my purchase of the ASUS ROG Ally 7" 120Hz FHD 1080p Gaming Handheld. It offers top-notch performance, a stylish design, and a range of features that make it a must-have for any gaming enthusiast. If you're in the market for a high-quality gaming handheld, I highly recommend considering this one.

The initial reviews of this were glowing, followed by a few harsh criticisms behind the design and some software issues. that being said asus addressed most, if not all of them, which is great to hear. The issue people had with the ABXY buttons sticking, fixed. Performance issues? fixed. Now all that is left is the supposed issue with the SD card slot.... on the topic of that (as im sure you are reading the reviews for this) its an issue, if you plan on using the SD card. The issue is that it either fries the port or fries the card. Right now Asus is in the works on figuring out a fix for this as the thought is that due to the location of the card slot, being right in line with the cpu exhaust vent its causing wear and tear. However independent testing has shown that the thermals in that area are well in line of what one would expect and well below the threshold for a micro SD card/slot. That being said, if you WERE planning on using that slot for additional storage etc, i would hold off on buying this until it is officially addressed and fixed (as I foresee a recall on all launch models soon). But if you have the money burning a hole in your pocket, my honest recommendation is to just go out and buy a 2tb 2230 gen4 nvme m.2 drive. it will run you just about the same, but be permanent internal memory that wont fry its self over the life span of the device. as for gaming and emulation this thing is a beast, as everyone is saying. emulating everything from c64 to Xbox 360 and Switch. I was even playing through Elden ring earlier today no issues. the biggest thing that would make this better is if there was a custom windows 11 image that they were using which had a lot of the unused features removed/disabled. for the sake of bloat. Disabling windows indexing will help with ram/cpu usage. Disabling windows 11 virtual machine platform will also help with general security issues. and running bloaty nosy will remove a lot of the bloat that windows throws on here by default. once done you should be able to get system ram usage down from 4-5 gb to 2-3gb. which just frees up ram for your games! TLDR: If you NEED to use the SD card slot, maybe wait, Or just spend the money on an upgraded nvme drive (it comes to about the same price anyways) Take the hour or so once you get it to watch some debloat tutorials, its absolutely worth it in the end. I have zero regrets for buying mine

Ended up selling my steam deck to a friend after getting the ROG Ally, but it wasnt exactly an easy choice. The ally is awesome because it supports more than just steam games like the steam deck natively does, but unfortunately windows on a handheld is still not really great. While the steam deck has strange issues like sometimes just not powering on and then needing an update out of nowhere The ally has all kinds of other issues like the game center just not working sometimes and also the keyboard being a little well bad. If all you care about is performance and playing games on something other than just steam get an ally, otherwise you might be better off just getting a steam deck.

Have a Steam Deck and really love it, so this was a no-brainer to "upgrade" to. And...hah. On paper this thing blows the SD away, but when it comes to actually using it, things change. First up, there are clear advantages. The screen is amazing, it weighs noticeably less, the speakers are pretty nuts, and it can theoretically play far more games than the SD. Because, it's a windows machine! But, also, it's a windows machine! So many freaking bugs, and just...weird stuff. You turn on a SD and can just play. It's reliable, almost like a console. The Ally, on the other hand, was like rolling dice each time I turned it on. Sometimes it would resume! Sometimes it would crash! Sometimes my resolution would change for no reason! Sometimes it forgot my button configurations! End of the day I returned it - tried it for over a month, even using it as a docked "mid tier" PC for a while (which also almost worked, except when the video output would keep forgetting which driver to use). The last straw was when it nuked a SD card. So, back to the Deck, which I'm appreciating even more these days. Ally is a great idea, but this first iteration is _not_ the way to go if you're expecting a frustration-free (or even low) experience.

Bought this with the legion go and steam deck oled and what I saw in this is: its age in which a lot of people had guides and recommendations for this already It’s a windows os And how clean it looked What set me off from this a bit was probably just storage and the smaller screen but it’s veryyyy portable friendly and performs greatttt. I play OW2 and MW3 a lot and those games work perfectly fine if you have guides to help ya set the settings
