Best Windows Handheld at an Amazing Price

Absolutely amazing device. I am shocked that since I purchased the Ally on day one, I have played it significantly more than my Steam Deck. I know there have been issues with some devices but just speaking from my experience, I have already logged several hundreds of hours across Silent, Performance, and Turbo Modes and I have no dead-zone issues and my SD Card and SD Card Reader are perfectly fine. I'm not minimizing those issues, just relaying my experience so far. Also, after the latest BIOS Update to increase fan speed I have noticed only the tiniest increase in overall fan noise. It is till far more quiet than the Steam Deck. If you are into PC Gaming and High-end Emulation this device is just about as good as you can get for the price.

Great design, right size and weight. Performance better than I expected. Windows is not the best OS for this form factor but with Xreal glasses and Bluetooth keyboard this becomes a very decent desktop computer. For retro gaming this is a perfect platform. Emudeck handles most of the heavy lifting. Battery life could have been better but I am more than happy especially since I carry a 65W batter pack with me which doubles the play time.

The ROG Ally is very capable in running games that are AAA titles as a handheld gaming PC. The ease of use with ASUS armory crate and the side toggle menu that allows for quick access to settings is very convenient. The only real downside to this device is its battery life when trying to play games at a higher wattage and resolution. Besides that, this handheld pc is a game changer just for the sheer ability to games that are equivalent to high end consoles or better.

    Sweer Handheld Gaming Device but.....

The Ally ROG is a sweet Handheld gaming device. It has the benefits of a full computer running windows 11 plus all the benefits of a gaming device. It works well with Steam, Epic, X-Box and other gaming platforms. The gaming controls are easy to use but I wished they would provide better feedback when playing a game. The touch screen is responsive and easy to use. Connect the Ally to an external monitor, a mouse and you have a fully functional PC. But battery life could be better. Depending on the game you might get between 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours. However, the fast charging makes up for it. To get a full charge, it will take between 30 to 40 minutes. lot people have complained about the SD card not working because it is too close to the heat exhaust fans. So far I haven't seen or experience any issues with the SD card. If you are looking for a simple but sweet Handheld gaming device on the go, I think the Ally ROG is a good device for the price point.

    My GO TO NonConsole Console

I own all 3 current consoles generations and can say this is my go to now. When the wife is on the TV I can remote play PS5 just as well as the ps portal, play any Xbox gamepass game either native if it has a PC Version or stream from Xbox Cloud if not the the emulation is untouched. I've been revisiting the Gamecube and PS3 just awsome. Then you always have your steam collection using the steam hardware so this is also basically a steamdeck but much stronger.the only problem is the Battery life but I'm around a plug in our car plug at most times. You can use a laptop battery bank also to keep your game going.

The rog ally is a great pc handheld. Powerful to play any and ever game you can imagine. Plays any steam game, xbox, and can even use this for ps remote play. The battery life is short but i usually keep mine plugged into wall while play or have it docked to the tv. I absolutely love the rog ally

When I purchased this product, I couldn’t wait to open it and get started. I never experienced a better handheld device in my entire life and I’m so thankful that the ROG was my first one. It was the fastest I’ve ever used and I used a lot of computers in my life. This by far was the most advanced that I ever used. I would recommend buying it because not only can you play all sorts of video games, but you can surf the web on the go! Great purchase and I don’t regret it.

The performance this pushes out is insane, leagues better than the competing steam deck. The controls feel great but I have to say the analog sticks feel a little sensitive they're not as stiff as the steam deck's but still work good. The screen is miles ahead of the steam deck and the 16:9 display is more fit for games as some have trouble with the taller aspect ratio. And coming with windows instead of linux means compatibility with every game you own not just a few.

I have never had a handheld pc and setting up this device took me a good amount of time. There were many bugs and issues for the first week, but has slowly gotten better after updates. To be honest there are still quite a few bugs that have made it annoying to deal with, but with all that I enjoy what this device has to offer and would buy again. There are big pros and big cons, but it is starting to be more pleasant and time passes. The battery life is terrible, so be ready to have the charger on hand. If you’re on the fence, maybe wait for updates to refine the experience and get one.

Overall I'm really liking the Ally and am very glad I purchased it. I picked up the Steam Deck during Valve's Summer sale and enjoyed handheld gaming so much that I wanted to expand the games I could play in handheld format. I know you CAN get battle.net games to run on the Steam Deck but I also wanted to natively play Game Pass games and that is where the Ally comes in. Diablo IV runs nicely and I'm really enjoying Sea of Stars, Hi-Fi Rush, and Fallout 4 on the Ally. I have a bunch of games in the backlog and the Ally is letting me play them. I have a very nice gaming PC but often I don't want to sit at a desk or just want to play 20-30 minutes before bed after a busy day and Ally fits perfectly for that. My main complaints are Windows related and keeping the Ally software updated. Windows is just annoying to use on a small screen and with a gamepad but this really only comes into play when updating the software and getting new games. But updating this thing/keeping it up to date is very annoying. MyAsus doesn't get the latest drivers so I usually end up going to Asus support page to manually download and install the latest updates. The Asus support page for downloading drivers is FAR from perfect. It's actually tricky to find all the drivers because of how they display them on the site. AMD doesn't seem to directly support the Ally via their update tools so you need to be careful with getting things from the AMD site. Lastly, Windows update can install the wrong version of software/drivers. Fingers crossed I'm running the best drivers. Maybe Asus and Windows will figure things out. The Steam Deck is just so much more streamlined.

Honestly what i expected, only handheld I’ve had gas been the switch lite and considering this is more powerful the battery life is understandable. It’s not perfect and you will need to tweak settings and or be close to a true power source. With the current updates that were released (12/21/2023) it has tremendously helped games like CyberPunk 2077, Horizon Zero Dawn, etc run more smoothly in the 15w option while not killing the battery within 1.5 hour . Pushing about 1.75/2.5 hours in total now.

The ROG ally is a beast. Easily keeps up with mid range gaming laptops when used in turbo mode. Yes, the battery drains quickly, but what gaming laptop last longer than a couple of hours at best? No issues with the joy sticks as some reviews have stated, and after a few BIOS updates, most of the bigger bugs have disappeared. As far as windows 11 is concerned, once you have the device setup, you almost never have to use it again, except for updates and such. Everything gaming related is launched through Armoury crate. Storage could’ve been bumped to at least a terabyte, but it can be very easily upgraded. Paired with a usb hub with hdmi output, keyboard and mouse, the ROG Ally is the ultimate portable gaming rig for travel.

This is a great handheld device. The battery life leaves a bit to be desired but that is to be expected with such a compact device pushing this much power. The internal layout is very diy when it comes to fixing or replacing parts. 120hz refresh rate and the ips display looks really nice. This machine can run a lot of games from emulation all the way up to modern AAA titles with some caveats when it comes to newer more demanding titles. Windows is not the best for a handheld if you are not used to pc gaming but it allows for compatibility with pretty much any game. Also you can load your own OS if you want a more steam deck "like" experience. The price could be a bit better but I wouldn't say it's overpriced for what you get.

Get the Steam Deck OLED instead

Much more difficult to use than the Steam Deck due to this running Windows 11. If you can get over the inconvenience of trying to run Windows 11 on a handheld device with no keyboard or mouse and on a very small screen, then yes you can do more than a Steam Deck. Other than that, the Steam Deck OLED has much better battery life, is easier to use, and doesn't require a TON of updates out of the box. Asus' Armoury Crate software is NOT designed for this machine, and I had to factory reset the device twice while trying to get the necessary firmware updates installed due to the software crashing mid-update. Also, any device manufactured in 2023 is likely to suffer joystick issues, so buyer-beware as Asus says they will cover it but has been known to deny coverage if you even opened the device to, say, install more storage. Oh, and don't forget about the SD card slot issues with it being right next to the fan exhaust!

    Power vs battery

There's no doubt this machine is the more powerful of the recent pc handhelds. That power does come at a cost and that's the battery life. If you don't mind carrying the charger around it's not a big issue but it does get considerably less battery life vs steam deck and MSIs handheld. It runs smooth though, powerful enough to play games like destiny 2 at a decent frame rate. Games like genshin impact fun flawlessly with no fps issues. Palworld ran pretty well as well. If you're ok with sacificing the battery life for more power than definitely pick up a rog ally.

Despite the poor battery life with the ROG Ally, it actually performs really well with modern AAA games. I've played a number of hardware heavy games on it, and all of them played well so far. The only con that Ive had personally would be the lack of a track pad, however it's not a huge negative. The setup for the ROG Ally was a but of hassel as I wasnt able to use the keyboard as it was a requirement to configure my wifi. Despite that, I was able to find a solution online which told me hold one of the mappable buttons on the back of the ally, while pressing up on the dpad to being it up. The ROG Ally has been great since its purchase and I enjoy it.
