The ROG Ally Review (after 4 months of use)

    I. Love it! It’s basically a handheld gaming PC that runs Windows 11, so it’ll have its quirks when you try to get it all working in the beginning, but it’s pretty much smooth sailing afterwards. It’s not a gaming powerhouse, but that’s okay! I’m amazed at the graphics on such a portable device, and it’s super nice to hold. Battery life could be a bit better, but if you play lighter titles, it might last longer. Overall, I really like the ROG Ally :D

    From Steamdeck to ROG ALLY

I'll start by saying I was a Steamdeck owner, I kept checking out the Rog Ally everytime I'd walk into my local Best Buy. The first thing I was sold on with the Rog Ally was the Asus Armoury Crate, basically its a application that lets you control all your gaming software from one place. Just one touch of a button and everything is nicely placed in one spot, also a big selling point for me was Xbox Gamepass could be installed (easily from the app store) yes you could install all these apps on Steamdeck but you would have to install Windows among other programs to make it work correctly. For most people this is impossible, Asus creating a Windows handheld has definitely made it easier from most customers to just pick up the Rog Ally and play. The system itself is very well made, the Ally feels like a expensive electronic. The button placement feels great, if your a person who loves the Xbox controller you'll be right at home with the Ally. The screen is beautiful, all games look phenomenal. The battery life is around 6 hours and that depends on your settings and how long you play. Asus offers a great dock so you can play you Ally on a big or small screen, you can also purchase a great Asus travel case that works great. Also the Rog Ally allows to expand the memory but overall most users should have no trouble having at least 8 games or more downloaded at a time, Asus also offers a great Cloud service so that opens up even more room for games. The end of the day I love my Rog Ally Extream, I would definitely pick it overall in the portable pc handheld world. My advice is to definitely purchase one, but if your still on the fence about it go to Best Buy and try the demo unit.

The Asus ROG Ally is everything i expected. It runs better than the steam deck at higher fps with a better screen. However as expected with the power usage, the battery does not last as long.I will say that this is not meant for console gamers. This is basically a pc and this switching from s stea deck, xbox, switch, or Playstation will have a tough time figuring it out unless you know your way through a computer.

This console truly is amazing, i was skeptical at first but it really can do more than just mid-high level gaming. Once paired up with a mouse and keyboard, you have yourself a reasonably priced hybrid machine. Emulations and asus rog ally go hand in hand. If you get specific peripherals, it also turns into an amazing gaming 4k 60fps gaming machine. Besdies the battery life, everything else is amazing. You also have consistent firmware updates which shows promise of continued support. So far, I truly have no complaints.

Solid performance for size. Great screen with variable refresh rate support. Really good use of Dolby Atmos on the speakers or with headphones. Really shines for games a few years old but can play modern games at lower settings at good frame rates. It is a full windows PC and does require setup like any desktop or laptop. Gaming on a PC can be a bit more advanced than consoles but this is well worth the tinkering.

Worked great right outta the box and set up was simple. Plenty of videos online to get you all set up. Prepare to tweak some things to get the most out of it and read up what you don't understand. Had it up and running in a couple hours. Runs games incredibly well, sound quality is fantastic, and has so much potential depending on how much effort you wanna put into it. Highly recommend for the patient gamer who's okay with lookin up how to configure everything to get the most out of it.

If you like top-quality handheld games, then buy the ROG Ally If you like the Steam Deck, then buy it. It's more powerful, especially on Turbo mode. Also has a better screen. If you like Xbox Game Pass and want to play them on a handheld, this is the device for you. Right now its main issue is its software can be buggy at times, but just like the Steam Deck; This is still the early days and so long as ROG continues to support it, this thing has great potential of being the definitive handheld PC for some time to come.

Very good handheld with lots of horsepower. It will run most modern games at 1080P and 30+ frames per second. It handles any indy game with ease at 120 frames per second. I can easily play Space Marine 2, Black Myth Wukong, Helldivers 2 without too much trouble. Obviously they dont run as well as on a console or PC, but that's expected on a handheld device. However, I think the price is a bit much, the battery has a very short life, and the ergonomics stink. If you can grab it at a discount or on sale, you'll be very happy. I also have a Steamdeck and I think there are pros and cons to both. The steamdeck is more user friendly and has a better UI/UX and ergonomics. However, the Ally beats the steamdeck on all performance metrics.

This has some serious potential but has many flaws (probably due to it being a new product). There are major deadzones in the joysticks and the SD card reader did not work. The screen quality and overall gaming performance was better than expected though. I ended up returning the item due ti the deadzones and sd card issue though.

Bought and had item since day 1, Really love the device although the only issues i had was the sd card slot, i bought a internal ssd 2tb as a replacement. i rarely with much space left. I would give it 5 stars if there was not so many issues on launch. overall love the performance must buy , Due to the SD card issue i believe ASUS needs to reduce the item by 100 dollars.

This little device is a beast. its very nice as it acts as a portable PC as well to hook to the TV for on the go travel entertainment. e.g. great when you are at a hotel and want to hook this up to watch a movie or youtube. the build quality is study and good. the size is perfect, not as bulky as the steam deck.

This has been great so far for playing my steam library. It has no problem playing even the AAA titles with ease and steady frame rates. Also, love that I can play Fortnite with friends on their consoles. I would suggest purchasing an external battery in case your not next to a plug. The battery tends to dry up quickly when running on full power. I wish this was around when I was a kid, but glad I can enjoy gaming as an adult again.

Haven’t touched my desktop since buying this. I get that most people would be horrified by this fact, asking “What the hell is wrong with you?” Weirdly enough, I’ve discovered that I MUCH prefer handhelds over sitting at my desk all day. Pros: Display is beautiful, runs pretty much every game (including Baldur’s Gate 3) at a decent or amazing framerate, and you can use any preferred game launcher besides Armory Crate — personally, I prefer Steam Big Picture. The RGB under the joysticks are customizable and pretty rad to look at, and since this is windows, you can install anything a gaming laptop can. Cons: the battery life is, frankly, abysmal, but personally it doesn’t bother me that much since I game in bed next to an outlet. Windows, more often than I’d like to admit, adds up small annoyances like the gamepad mode going in and out, windows updates at inconvenient times, and having useless applications like Microsoft Teams or Excel (for some reason) pre-installed. Also, Microsoft Edge. Also, for the price, it’s disappointing that a case isn’t included with the handheld itself. There’s also, strangely enough, no proper sleep mode. Overall, the cons I listed aren’t that big of deals to me; just something I hope are improved on in the future. This has still been an utter blast to play on, tweaking here and there aside.

So I really like this handheld so far. I have not had a steam deck so I can’t compare. I instantly pulled out the 512gb and installed a 2TB. This handheld is able to play AAA games. It runs on Windows 11 so they say if it can play on windows it can on here. The only draw back that i see is the little battery life, which i knew going into this. The only other thing is you have to like to tinker with it to get it to run to your liking. Its easy but not as easy as a Nintendo where you cplay without tinkering.

I fell in love right away with this baby, I love the feeling of setting it up, doing some research of what to do to get more fps, how to optimize it, etc, etc, though for a lot of other people which I think is the majority can go with the wrong impression of this being a normal console that you push the power button, select the game and start gaming, this is totally different, this should be treated as a mini pc with joysticks, there's a bunch of things you have/might want to do in order to get the best out of this, you need to download a bunch of launchers and stores in order to play your favorite games and have this updated on a regular basis to get the best performance, a lot of times you have to do sometimes you have to get creative and do some hacky things in order to play games if the games are not optimized to be played with a controller. I would seriously recommend this to a select group if people who are pc enthusiasts and that have some experience with common issues a pc can have and to be able to be on top of the glitchy and buggy things you might find. It's a powerful little beast.

Pros:Versatility: PC consoles offer the best of both worlds, combining the power and flexibility of a gaming PC with the convenience and form factor of a traditional console.Graphics Performance: With high-end GPUs and CPUs, PC consoles can deliver exceptional graphics and performance, often surpassing what's possible on dedicated gaming consoles.Game Library: You have access to a vast library of games, including PC exclusives, older titles, and the latest releases on platforms like Steam, Epic Games Store, and more.Modding Support: PC consoles often support modding, allowing players to customize and enhance their gaming experiences with user-created content.Upgradability: Unlike traditional consoles, PC consoles are highly upgradable, allowing you to swap out components like GPUs, CPUs, and RAM to keep up with the latest hardware.Cons:Price: PC consoles can be more expensive than traditional gaming consoles, especially if you opt for high-end components.Complexity: Setting up and maintaining a gaming PC can be more complex than using a dedicated gaming console, which is designed for plug-and-play simplicity.Compatibility: Not all PC games are optimized for controller input, so some games may require keyboard and mouse usage, which can be less comfortable for console gamers.Hardware Variability: The performance of a PC console can vary depending on the components chosen, so it's essential to research and invest in quality parts. Conclusion:A PC console is an excellent choice for gamers who value performance, versatility, and access to a vast game library. While it may require a higher initial investment and some technical know-how, the ability to upgrade and customize your gaming rig can result in a top-notch gaming experience that's hard to beat. However, if you prefer a more straightforward and budget-friendly gaming experience, a traditional console might be a better fit.

First off I am an early adopter to the steam deck and I loved that system! So I had a hard time justifying this purchase. I didn’t think anything could top it but this completely does and has far exceeded my expectations! PS3 emulation is flawless it runs ncaa 14 better than my ps3! I would highly recommend this device if you understand how windows 11 works… buy it you won’t be disappointed! Only negative is I will have to swap my ssd for a larger drive. It’s 2023 everything should come minimum with a 1 tb drive.
