    Handheld gaming with a 'twist'

Selling points were: 512GB, 1080P screen and $400 on sale. I debated going with a 'Deck' vs a 'MS' powered device. ASUS does include a 'launcher' that sort of helps however navigating WIN with a 'Xbox controller' is painful at best. After getting through the MS nonsense I loaded Steam on it and installed 3 games from my library. (all of which are fairly OLD IE: not resource intense) 2 out of 3 play fairly normal/as expected while 1 was not even able to drive 1080P with this device. :( Thankfully it draws low enough power to be fully energized with a USBC charge cord. IDK about battery life, I'd expect/hope a few hours. Smaller+ligher than bringing a full gaming laptop, uses less power so a 'power brick' might keep it going for a while AND since it is screen+controller in one device no need to carry a bunch of extra stuff. Wireless wise it is 5G/2.4G Wifi +Bluetooth, lots of connectivity. The Z1 is one of the weakest CPU/GPU's so don't expect AAA games with better than 'LOW-MID' graphic settings. I'd say this is 'medium', hence the 3 out of 5 stars.

    Great Handheld

Bought this as a Christmas gift for my wife, and ended up an excellent purchase for her. She'd been using my Steam Deck off and on, but uses Game Pass for a lot of her PC gaming. Linux was not user friendly for her, so this was a nice alternative for her. Everything just works out of the box, and while it has issues, those are more issues with Windows 11 than the device itself. Plays everything she wants to play (Expect to lower some settings, it is a handheld device afterall) so well worth it for the money.

The New Generation of Gaming PCs

My daughter wanted a gaming PC, and but loves the Switch form-factor. This was the obvious choice. It runs high end game with ease, and has been very dependable so far. Plus, you can dock it for big-screen experience if you want. My only quibble is that it could have more storage, but we DID opt for the low-end model.

Much preferred over a regular steam deck since you have windows access. Only issue is durability. I needed to replace a thumbstick after a year

In a world where the Steam Deck OLED exists, the ROG Ally finds it hard to compete. The entry level model in combination with holiday sales and open-box offerings help in this regard and surprisingly the performance is very comparable to the Steam Deck. I would recommend as an entry point to Windows handheld gaming.

I purchased the Z1 unit over the Z1 extreme due to the excellent sale price of $399. I had low expectations of being able to play my favorite AAA games on descent settings. I was absolutely blown away by the performance. I purchased the Legion Go before Christmas, and you would think that it's listed high performance specs would highly outperform this one. No in the least! The Legion Go is an example of great hardware but software that does not work well with it. Games played nowhere near the quality of the ROG basis unit. I can play Destiny 2 on the highest settings and Call of Duty Modern Warefare 3 on normal. The unit fits in your hand well and the Armour Crate works wonderful. You can set the VRAM to auto or set to any amount you like. Auto work fine in everything I've tried. Asus got this one right and proves that you don't need the greatest hardware specs if you have the software that works well to maximum efficiency. In my opinion, only get the Z1 Extreme if you plan to connect to an external monitor at a higher resolution. Otherwise, this little powerhouse should meet your needs. I highly recommend taking advantage of the $200 discount to $399.

I personally love it and thought my kid will also enjoy it but he will rather use his xbox or ipad. I think is a great device but is not for everyone. During the update process the device stopped booting, I had to recover the OS, other than that it works as advertised. It's not as easy as an Xbox or ipad for kids, computer experience is required.

The Ally, really is the best handheld ive owned. Its really powerful the z1 extreme version that is. Its running games the steam deck cant play at all. The controls are good, alittle odd to hold. The screen is colorful and vibrant. The updates are the best part. Gyroscope, fsr, fixes, more power ro balalce out the modes to play in. The interface is pretty easy to use. And its on sale alot!
