Customers often highlight the ROG Ally X's overall performance, improved battery life, and ideal balance of portability and power as key strengths. The device also receives positive feedback for its screen quality, game compatibility, storage capacity, ample RAM, efficient heat dissipation, and acceptable noise levels. While the device is considered a bit heavy, the primary concern appears to be the user experience with the operating system.

Best handheld PC as of now
||Posted . Owned for 4 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I am absolutely blown away by the ASUS ROG Ally X, which I picked up from Best Buy last week. This device is a true game-changer for portable PC gaming. The performance is phenomenal. Games run incredibly smoothly, and the graphical fidelity is stunning on the vibrant, high-refresh-rate screen. The colors are bright, and the response time is instant, making for a truly immersive experience. Ergonomically, it's very comfortable to hold for long sessions, and the button and stick layout feels natural and intuitive. For me, the biggest upgrade is the battery life. I can now game for several hours without being tethered to a wall, which is exactly what I wanted from a handheld. ASUS has clearly listened to the community with this X model. If you're on the fence, I can say it's completely worth it. This is peak handheld gaming.

This thing is Game Changing I love it
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Holy cow this thing has changed my life on long trips and crazy boring flights. Windows is a bit chunky to use without a mouse and keyboard but totally manageable. I have access to epic games, rockstar, battle.net and steam. So nice to just be able to download them. Battery life is decent I get about 4-5 hours on AAA games. Ran into a few issues with more graphic heavy games like Calisto Protocol and Alan Wake 2. But those are crazy heavy. It runs games like Dishonored like a champ. And indi to games, get out of here you can play those for almost 8 hours. Not to mention you can watch Netflix and movies and browse the internet just like a normal PC. I love it. Played through all of Deathloop on high graphics with no issue. Just make sure you plug in or bring a power bank for extended play on higher settings.

Best in class
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Awesome device. Of course it have limitations comparing to consoles and regular PCs, but considering other mobile platforms (latest phones, Switch, PS Portal and direct challengers) it outstands in performance, deliver a good playing time only using battery and you can even use it as a regular computer if needed. Screen is not OLED but is bright and clear, controls have a good grip and it does not get hot when playing. Software support is very good with frequent updates and overall building quality is also very good.

A device I didn't know I needed until I got it
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've been using the Asus Ally X for a few days, and overall, it's been a good addition to my gaming setup. I initially bought the original Ally, but ended up returning it because it didn't quite meet my expectations in terms of battery life and I liked the prospect of the 24GB RAM and the 1tb ssd. However, the Ally X has addressed many of those issues. The battery life is quite respectable, thanks to the 80Wh battery. It lasts long enough for moderate gaming sessions, though you may need to keep an eye on the battery if you're planning a marathon session. The ergonomic design is comfortable, with larger grips and well-placed joysticks that help reduce hand fatigue. The build quality feels sturdy and reliable, though it's a bit on the heavier side. With 24GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD, there's plenty of storage and memory for games, and the cooling system does a fair job at keeping the device from overheating during play. Overall, the Asus Ally X is a good option for handheld gaming, offering decent performance, a comfortable design, and sufficient storage. It's a reliable device for gamers looking to play on the go. Does this version capture everything you're looking for?

Lives up to the hype
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Everything you've heard about the phenomenal battery life is true. I've run Microsoft Flight Simulator (both the 2020 and 2024 versions) which will put any gaming PC through the paces. The ROG Ally X performed quite well and actually outlasted my MSI Raider laptop by a significant margin. Obviously, the Windows 11 interface can become a hassle on a handheld PC. This will take a little getting used to, but the sheer number of games this system can play and the efficiency at which the Ally X plays them is well worth it. The screen, sticks, and buttons are all great. I do quite a bit of retro gaming (from PS2 all the way back to the Atari 2600) which this machine handles all of that superbly. In addition to being a great device for modern AAA games, the ROG Ally X is my favorite retro gaming rig as well. I wasn't sure about spending big bucks on a handheld PC at first. However, after several days with this one, I'm really glad I did.

Better than all others
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Performance Processor: The ROG Ally X is powered by AMD’s Ryzen Z1 Extreme APU, which provides excellent performance for gaming on the go. This allows it to handle demanding titles with relative ease. Graphics: With RDNA 3 architecture, the graphics capabilities are impressive, enabling smooth gameplay at higher settings. Display Screen Quality: The device features a 7-inch full HD display with a high refresh rate, offering vibrant colors and good viewing angles, making it suitable for gaming and media consumption. Touchscreen: The touchscreen responsiveness adds to the overall user experience, especially in menu navigation. Design Build Quality: The design is ergonomic, with a comfortable grip, making it suitable for extended gaming sessions. Portability: Its lightweight form factor enhances portability, making it easy to carry around. Battery Life Longevity: Battery performance is decent but can vary significantly depending on the game being played. Heavy titles may drain the battery quicker than lighter games. Software Operating System: Running Windows 11, it allows access to a wide range of PC games and applications. However, this may also lead to some bloatware depending on the installation. Connectivity Ports: The device comes with a variety of ports, including USB-C and HDMI, allowing for easy connections to external displays and accessories. Price Point Value: While it is priced competitively for a handheld gaming device, potential buyers should consider their gaming needs and whether they prefer the versatility of a full Windows experience over a more console-like interface

Best handheld I have ever had
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I’ve got a collection of consumer handhelds from the original Ally, Legion Go, Claw, Steam Deck LCD and OLED, and even some Ayaneo and GPD devices. Out of all of them, this one is hands down the best. The battery life is incredible, and the feel of the device is just right. It’s a must-have for anyone who loves handheld gaming. The performance somehow beats the other z1 extreme devices and feels cooler to the touch while doing it. I'm blown away.

The best handheld gaming device on the market now
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I now own both the Ally Extreme and the Ally X. While both are great, the Ally X does represent a wonderful upgrade over the originals. While the processor and screen are the same, the additional RAM really does improve performance, and the image quality somehow does look sharper. The real upgrades have been in the improve ergonomics, the vastly improved joysticks and directional pad, the improved battery life, and improved ventilation. While the joysticks are still not quite as comfortable and responsive as my PS Dual Sense edge, they are much better than the looser ones on the original Ally. The device is a bit heavier than the original, but still more comfortable to hold. The extra USB-C port is great, and the screen no longer becomes uncomfortably hot during play. The only gripe I have is the back buttons are now smaller and a little bit harder to reach.

A Game-Changer for On the go gaming
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I am absolutely blown away by the ASUS ROG Ally! This device truly sets the standard for handheld gaming. The AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor combined with 24GB of RAM ensures buttery-smooth performance, even when playing demanding AAA titles. The 7” 120Hz FHD screen is vibrant, crisp, and incredibly responsive, making every game look stunning and feel immersive. The inclusion of a 1TB SSD is a huge win—it provides ample storage for all my games, with plenty of room for media and other files. The build quality is top-notch; it feels sturdy and comfortable to hold during long gaming sessions. Battery life has been solid for me, especially given the power this device is packing. Plus, the customizable RGB lighting and sleek black design give it a premium, stylish look. ASUS has truly thought of everything, even making it easy to dock and connect to external peripherals. Whether you’re a casual gamer or a hardcore enthusiast, the ROG Ally is worth every penny. It’s not just a gaming device—it’s a portable powerhouse. Highly recommend it to anyone looking to take their gaming to the next level!

Great Deal - would buy it again without hesitation
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I watched for a deal and snagged this ROG Ally X as a returned item. If you play a lot of Windows / XBox / GoG games this is a great little gadget. The battery lasts a very long time, the controls are very responsive, and the graphics and display are really nice. Also, Asus updated the design from the OG Ally so that the Ally X no longer doubles as a micro SD card toaster. The Ally X actually runs very cool overall. I have compared it to my brothers' Steam Decks and it is a smidge larger but has better battery life and supports more game sources - and if you're feeling adventurous there are directions out there to install SteamOS on the Ally X too! I bought the 1 TB version, which works great for my current game library. Would definitely recommend if you're looking for a Windows-based gaming handheld!

Good desktop replacement/upgrade
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought the ROG Ally X about 3 weeks ago as an experiment to see if it could replace a gaming desktop I built 9 years ago (considered budget to mid tier at the time); the desktop was starting to show its age with modern games and applications. The quick summary is that it's doing well as a desktop replacement/upgrade for both gaming and work with the added bonus of allowing for gaming on the go (or on the couch) More details - hopefully these are helpful: - Current setup involves a dock (one of the JSAUX ones) for peripherals. Currently running two 1080p monitors with the APU only - no eGPU at this time (although hopefully I can do this in the future). - Most intensive game played while docked is Overwatch 2 which is running smoothly with low settings; I'm not hardcore enough to track frames and temps, but it's smooth, the console isn't burning up, and the fans aren't screaming - In handheld mode, mostly playing 2D/pixel-art games (Slay the Spire, Backpack Hero) which also run smoothly - no issues with the console getting too hot. Of course, these aren't performance-intense games - the main user has extra extra small hands (according to Google Gemini that's a size 5 surgical gloves) and notes that the console is comfortable to hold and use. My hands are average sized for males (according to Google Gemini that's surgical gloves 7.5-8) and the console is comfortable for me as well. The console does not get too heavy or anything. - Armory Crate had a few hiccups (freezing, having to end task) here and there, but that was prior to completing all the updates. Armory Crate has been running smoothly since then. - One thing to consider is that the device itself is already quite expensive, make sure you also account for the cost of peripherals/accessories that you plan to buy (case, dock, etc). - Another thing to consider is your use case and priorities: based on our priorities, we put the $$$kill points into portability instead of higher end graphics/performance. This may not be the case for you; if you prioritize high end graphics/performance you'd likely get better bang for your buck building a desktop. Other products considered - Legion Go: too large for primary user (although I'd consider it for myself in the future because I like the detachable controllers). Also the internet seemed to think the Ally X was just a smoother user experience with its Armory Crate which was also important for the primary user. Finally, the 24GB RAM on the Ally X vs the 16GB on the Legion Go allegedly allowed for a better docked/desktop-replacement experience according to the interwebs - GPD products (win mini vs win max vs win 4): I got too scared about issues with shipping/customer service. Again, a smooth experience was a priority so this moved lower down the list With all this typed up, you're probably better off watching some youtube videos or scrolling through reddit.

Portable Setup!
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It’s worth it if A: you travel a lot to friends, family, or in general were you see your self using it, the price is steep but it’s worth the performance, battery life and portability. It runs cool as well, I haven’t seen a decrease in performance from just sheer Temperature. You could also just hook up a Mouse, keyboard, and portable screen and Boom, it becomes portable set up away from home or personal set up.

ROG Ally X 7" 120Hz FHD
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The ROG Ally X stands out in 2025 as the most powerful, versatile Windows-based handheld gaming PC available. It excels in raw performance, display quality, ergonomics, and flexibility across gaming ecosystems. If you want the thrill of high-end PC gaming on the go—and don’t mind investing time in setup and handling some UI quirks—this device is an exceptional choice. However, if your priority is ultra-portability, simplicity (like plug-and-play), or a lower price tag, lighter, OS-optimized alternatives like the Steam Deck OLED or Nintendo Switch 2 may serve you better. Pros High-Performance Hardware: Equipped with the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor, 24GB RAM, and a 1TB SSD, it delivers robust performance for gaming and multitasking. Smooth Display: The 7-inch 1080p IPS display with a 120Hz refresh rate ensures fluid visuals, enhancing the gaming experience. Extended Battery Life: The 80Wh battery offers improved longevity, allowing for extended gaming sessions without frequent recharges. Ergonomic Design: The handheld features comfortable grips and well-placed controls, contributing to a more enjoyable gaming experience. Windows 11 Pro: Provides access to a wide range of games and applications, offering versatility beyond gaming. Cons Weight: At approximately 680g, it is heavier than some competitors, which may affect portability. Price: Priced around $899, it is on the higher end of the market, which might be a consideration for budget-conscious consumers. Windows 11 on Handheld: Navigating Windows 11 on a small screen can be cumbersome, potentially affecting user experience. Limited Software Optimization: Not all games and applications are optimized for handheld use, which may lead to compatibility issues. No OLED Display: Despite the high resolution and refresh rate, the lack of an OLED screen means colors and contrast may not be as vibrant as some users expect.

The performance is phenomenal—powered by AMD Ryzen, it handles AAA titles seamlessly with impressive graphics and smooth frame rates. The screen is stunning, with vibrant colors and excellent brightness that makes gaming feel immersive whether indoors or outside. The design is sleek yet comfortable, and the controls are responsive and well-placed, making long gaming sessions enjoyable. What really sets this apart is the versatility—use it as a handheld or dock it for a full PC experience. Plus, the support for Xbox Game Pass is a huge bonus for expanding your gaming library! Great handheld gaming
||Posted . Owned for 6 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was lucky enough to get an open box in excellent condition that was literally still wrapped in the original plastic, so I’m not sure if it had ever been touched before. I was also lucky enough to get it before the $100 price increase. I went to affect a few months ago so I believe I paid around 650 for it. I’ve actually been running a Linux distribution instead of Windows, as I don’t play with any online or any sports games that I have all the anti-cheat built into them. As long as you understand the type of performance, you’re gonna get out of this hardware and depending on the software you choose to use, you can have a really good experience. I use it for mostly indie games RPG some adventure games but I’ve also played and beat the last of us part two and it played very well at like medium settings, 900p with frame rates around 40 to 45 for a game like that is perfectly fine. Battery life has been really good especially with less demanding games get 4 to 6 hours out of something like sea of stars Especially if you can find it open box and get a condition I would recommend this. I’m glad I got it before the price hikes went into effect but even still if you can get it for under 700 I would say it’s worth it. The battery is huge in this thing larger than what’s in my Asus laptop. It’s just good to have something that’s powerful enough to play most games at a certain playable level that you can just take with you easily

Rog ally x
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Not going to lie I was a little worried about how well games would run on such a small form factor but to be honest it’s exceeded my expectations. It’s handled everything I could throw at it while staying extremely quiet. Even on call of duty it seems to hold at least 90 fps with ease. It feels nice in the hands and doesn’t cause fatigue like the steam deck use to cause but the big plus on this thing is battery life. I can easily get 6 hours of gameplay before needing to plug in. If you’re debating getting this I would just pull the trigger you won’t regret it

The Ally X is a homerun for me.
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've had multiple Steam Decks (both OG and OLED) as well as the original ROG Ally (non-X) and after a week of using the ROG Ally X I have to say that this is the Gaming Handheld/Portable PC to get in 2024. To be able to play Starfield, in turbo-mode with little to no performance dips in most of the games areas is a win for me. The Steam Deck is great and definitely has a place in the market but I have a large Steam library (over 1000 games) and I can now play every one of those games because the Ally X is Windows based. Microsoft has improved the Windows 11 experience in the last 12 months with devices like these and ASUS has really polished things up with the software and hardware since the first Ally release. The fans are louder, the battery life is much longer and the joysticks alone are so improved over the first gen Ally that they warrant the purchase by themselves.
