Customers are saying

Customers often highlight the ROG Ally X's overall performance, improved battery life, and ideal balance of portability and power as key strengths. The device also receives positive feedback for its screen quality, game compatibility, storage capacity, ample RAM, efficient heat dissipation, and acceptable noise levels. While the device is considered a bit heavy, the primary concern appears to be the user experience with the operating system.

I upgraded from a steam deck. I like having the better battery and more powerful processor. It is a little heavier but well worth it. The usb 4 is great for running an external dock to make it usable as a main pc. Only downside is it is an asus product. I do wish that the screen was 8” and the grips were angled out because I find it uncomfortable to hold an anything other than one position after a while.

Just got mine a few days ago, swapped out the SSD for a 4 TB one and added a 1 TB SD Card to it, it works like a dream. I'm someone who bought the original Rog Ally a year ago and regretted it, I am not a fan of the orignal model at all. A year later I can confidently say this is an improvement in every way, it's battery is significantly better, it has stronger modes (13 W silent mode instead of 10W and 17W performance instead of 15W) it also charges quicker if you have a faster charger, the Ally X can charge up to 100W though it only comes with a 65W charger out of the box. So far I've tested it for several days, it has some flaws which are to be expected with a Windows gaming machine in general. As a comparison however to the original from a year ago it is leaps and bounds ahead in everything including in game performance, modes, charging. The Ally X even has a customizable side panel which now has a function you can add which closes the running game which is very much appreciated since the orignal didn't h ave that. (Not sure if it was added later but was absent for a long time at the very least from the original model). The improvements to Armory Crate are actually pretty good too, it doesn't crash anywhere near as much as it did a year ago (though they have improved it over the past year meaning it works a bit better on the original one too now). Additionally Armory Crate even has a favorites option now which can even bypass the launchers for games that have them. This is particularly when you don't want to keep dealing with those popups from said games every time that you launch them. The favorites page also allows you to tie in multiple launchers and games from said launchers all in one interface such as Steam, Epic, Gog, the Windows Store, etc. It's main negative points are that it is (in my humble opinion) $1-200 over priced, additionally you get a barebones package which doesn't include either a carrying case or a stronger charger which is really cheap in my opinion. Additionally a 1 TB for storage on a device like this is nowhere near enough either (again in my opinion some might think it's fine). Additionally as stated above the general Windows errors are still present such as some games not working with it despite working on the steam deck like the Kingdom Hearts collections which crash constantly on both the Ally and the Ally X whether using the Epic or Steam versions, additionally other games that have known Windows audio issues like Persona 3 Reload for example sound very quiet on the Ally X when not using headphones even at full volume. (SteamDeck doesn't have the same problem in this regard). Benefits wise however it is MUCH lighter (at least it feels that way to me) over the SteamDeck. Also having the ability to run (mostly) all of your games in one little device is really nice, since these support bigger hard drives (though you'll have to buy them and install them yourself which is not a fun process honestly) you can basically keep everything on them at once, and since you can change the power output modes you can conserve or utilize more power based on the needs of the game you're playing. The power button which turns it on now sticks out more which makes it easier to reach, and you no longer have to hold it down for several seconds which is really nice, it's also great that the fingerprint reader actually works on this one because it did not on the original Rog Ally I constantly had issues with it not responding at all on the original. The buttons and control sticks are also vast improvements, the original ones felt loose and flimsy and I was often afraid they were going to break especially in games which required you shake the sticks around like Dead Rising or God of War, I have no such concerns in the Ally X as everything feels tighter now. In my opinion the good outweighs the bad but it'll be ultimately up to you to decide if its worth it to upgrade from the original or swap out your Steam Deck for it. In my opinion it is very much worth it to sell the original Ally and get this one instead however from a personal stand point I still find myself gravitating more towards the SteamDeck Oled's ease of use and Oled screen. Personally if you have an Oled SteamDeck I'd probably just recommend sticking to that unless you play a lot of online multiplayer games or games involving anticheat as those have mixed results with the SteamDeck. The SteamDeck Oled is also cheaper and includes a premium case, though it has it's own problems such as not being able to play games from other launchers (at least not easily) and you can't upgrade it's SDD beyond 2TB at the current moment. In the end the Ally X is great, however it is very pricey and does have its fair share of both good and bad. Ultimately whether or not its worth the upgrade is a personal decision but I'm very happy with it myself.

Great device for gaming on the go or somewhere in your home separate from your normal set up. I’ve mainly played single player games via Xbox game pass at this point and the games does excellent. I’ve don’t some minor attempts at BO6 and Apex but because of the amount of settings to optimize the gaming experience, I haven’t taken the time to truly test these out yet. The device feels solid. Battery life playing something like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is roughly 3ish hours in performance mode, but I think that could be extended if I changed the settings further. Overall, very pleased.

I haven’t been into handhelds in years and bought this after research and threw a 4tb drive in, bazzite and WOW, what a massive performer, I don’t know if it’ll live up past a couple years for new games however for no mans sky, geforce, fallout 4 it’s been incredible.

Its insane the amount of time I can play PC games at 20w without needing to be near an outlet. It is a significant step up from my og Ally Z1E that I do not regret in the slightest. And it's not just the battery! The ergonomics make it much more comfortable to hold as well as there are games that would struggle on my old ally that play smoother here on the x. A lot of issues people have are Windows specific issues that can be solved via Google, I personally had some minor stutters but if you don't mind messing around with your device a bit, this will be no problem and you'll get the most out of the X that way. So sure, not as grab and go as a steam deck but IMO the set up stage is way worth it for the power AND play time this device can deliver.

I travel for work quite a bit and owned the original Ally Z1 Extreme. Traded that one in and got the Ally X. The higher speed DDR5 and larger battery actually had a bigger impact to performance than I thought it would. On the original Ally, Diablo 4 (low quality settings, 45fps, 30% brightness) I would get about 1 hour on battery on performance mode. Now I am getting a little over 2 hours on battery. Perfect for gaming while waiting at the airport. The Ally X fan noise also isn't as loud as the original and the air coming out of the vents doesn't seem as hot. My only gripe with my unit is the D Pad is a little squeeky and because its slightly thicker than the original, it doesn't fit in my case anymore. Overall very happy with it so far.

Love this, I have a PC at home and was dabbling with the idea of a laptop. Got this after some trial and error, and I am happy with the purchase. It runs my games fine and is easily transportable. There are some features or selections that may be confusing to someone who has not owned a PC before as this is basically a computer with a controller as a keyboard, just watch tiktoks to iron out the quirks.

Modern Gaming on the Go? It's a go!

Being able to handle modern games on the go has changed the way I play. It is stronger and cheaper than my current desktop with a 1080Ti. Where I was running into issues playing Space Marine 2, it now runs like a dream. Be aware that to get the best from this machine, it needs to be plugged in. There is some bloatware that slows things down, and can even kill your battery, but follow one of the hundreds of guides to make it as efficient as possible and it will not disappoint. I was able to make it through a 4 hour flight playing a high intensity game and only plugged it in at the last hour or so.

Great device very portable. The performance is fantastic. I’ve been playing Cyberpunk 2077, Baldur’s Gate 3, and Hogwarts Legacy, and they all run between 45–60 FPS on medium to high settings with FSR turned on. It handles modern games like a champ, and the extra 24GB of RAM actually helps in multitasking—I’ve had Discord, Chrome, and Steam running in the background with no slowdown.

I’ve been thoroughly impressed with the ASUS ROG Ally. It’s an incredible handheld gaming PC that delivers a solid performance. The compact design packs a punch with its AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor, making AAA games run smoothly on a handheld device. The 120Hz display provides a crisp and vibrant gaming experience, and the controls feel comfortable for extended play. Battery life is decent considering the power it’s pushing, and the ability to switch between Xbox Game Pass, Steam, and other platforms seamlessly makes it a versatile device. For gamers on the go or those who want a PC gaming experience in a portable form, the ROG Ally is an excellent choice. Would definitely recommend!

Best handheld gaming so far! If you want mobility and have fun on the go, this unit is the one to get. The battery life is great and the viewing in sunlight is easy to see. The first initial setup is a challenge, but once you have it set, all things come to life when playing intense games on this unit.

If you want a handheld that has no issue playing anything you throw out it you have come to the right place. Yes it gets hot, but it never feels as hot as your laptop would besides, you’re holding it on the side so it doesn’t really bother you the resolution looks amazing probably because the screen is so small. You don’t notice that is really 1080p. Great economics. Great build quality. Great product. I literally have no bad thing to say about this product. However, it does run windows I like that, but some people don’t.

on July 19, 2024, and it has easily been one of the best gaming purchases I’ve made. The performance on this device is outstanding. The Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor paired with 24GB of RAM handles everything I throw at it—from AAA titles to emulation—without any issues. Games run smooth, and the 120Hz display makes everything look incredibly clean and responsive. One thing I really appreciate is the flexibility. Being able to run full Windows means I’m not limited to just one platform. I can jump between Steam, Xbox Game Pass, and other launchers seamlessly. It basically feels like having a high-performance gaming PC in my hands. The battery life is solid for what it delivers, especially when adjusting performance modes, and the upgraded storage (1TB SSD) gives plenty of room for multiple games without constantly needing to delete anything. Ergonomics are also on point—the device feels comfortable even during long sessions, and the controls are responsive and well-built. Paired with a good controller setup, it becomes even better. Overall, the ROG Ally X delivers power, versatility, and portability all in one device. If you’re looking for a premium handheld gaming experience, this is absolutely worth it.

I love the battery life upgrade, 1TB SSD upgrade and improved performance of the ROG Ally X over the 2023 Ally. I am not one to notice display quality but I can say I appreciate the 120Hz display based on what others say. I am not sure the increased RAM and additional storage warrant the significant price bump. While many rave about its gaming capabilities, portability, and ergonomic design, I can agree with the concerns about the price, build quality, and Windows 11 operating system.

This thing is great. If you had the first gen the battery life upgrade is worth it if you have the spare cash. Get allot of playtime in bed before sleep. Great for traveling, works with most generic c docks. Never used a deck or anything so can’t say in a Vs. I love the ally though and have minimal difficulties. Windows feature knowledge is good to have, how to roll back etc.
