ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X - This Is an Xbox?
The ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X is a powerful handheld gaming PC with stellar ergonomics and performance, but its high price ($999) and software issues make it a niche product. Key strengths include improved comfort with larger grips, a powerful AMD Z2 Extreme chip, and an improved Xbox-style interface that simplifies the user experience. However, weaknesses include a bulky design, high cost, and a clunky software experience with redundant interfaces from Windows, Xbox, and Asus's Armory Crate.

The Xbox Rog Ally X is a great product but only if you’re comfortable messing with settings here an there to make it run the way you like. In many cases there might not be much you need to do if yoy’re running 720p or 900p with 60fps or less, but to run 120fps with 900p or 1080p mighr require you to mess with settings and tweak things until it can run smoothly and maintain theframe rate. As far as i can tell it heavily prioritizes the resolution over the framerate which i think is why i had so many things to tweak, but its still an amazing product. I use it for Horror games like 7 days to die and outlast trials but also play Overwatch and Marvel Rivals on it with minumal issues. Its essentially a mini pc. If you understand how to use a gaming pc you’ll understand this device. If you’re coming from console it may be a bit of a pesrning curve but not nearly as much considering you won’t be mouse and keyboarding by default. Highly recommend for portability.

Great gaming handheld device for those who want to take their AAA gaming titles on the go. I played a various about of games on it with great success. As this console released side by side with Battlefield 6 there was a lot of issues with DirextX crashing. The ergonomics are excellent as they feel like an Xbox controller. That along with the Xbox Full Screen experience make the handheld a gaming device with a familiar front end. While Microsoft used this as a attempt to piggy back off the success of the original Ally, it does deliver a more polished look and feel for the UI. In terms of value, it's not worth the $999.99 price tag in the USA, but if something like this came out 20 years ago it might have been justified.

Absolutely love it!! We are having our first kid in January and when I won't be able to sit around on my computer and game for a little I can grab this bad boy and continue playing my favorite games. The fact that I was able to put an emulation station here would have been it worth it but it has also been my entry level into Geforce Now and being able to play games from this using GFN is unreal.

If youre looking for the ultimate hand held emulation machine then this is it. The desktop mode isnt really bad to navigate on the touch screen, runs everything at least as well as my PC, and the only emulator that i had to manually set up controls on was dolphin. Just choose the built in controller (its called SDB or something like that) under config and it just works. There are redundancies in the os but i dont mind them, and all of the buttons are remappable anyway.

The convenience of being able to play without minimal load times on the go with all out full PC games in the palm of your hand is something that I really enjoy. I’ve actually been playing my ROG Xbox ally X more than my PS5 Pro I believe I made a good investment

I was going to buy a Switch 2 but realized there weren't a heck of a lot of first-party titles that i would play. So I dropped a few hundred more and got this. My main games are Forza Horizon 5 and Pinball FX 3 and this plays both very well. I also gave the latest Indiana Jones title a spin and it plays great too. Battery life isn't the best in the world, but with the power this uses, I do better than expected. With Gamepass Ultimate, a decent number of games in my MS library, and loaded Steam and Epic games libraries I have tons of content without having to buy anything. This thing is awesome! Only downside is that it might be a little on the spendy side. I am an adult though so it won't kill me :)

New pros:
Bless. those. handles!! Sooooo dang comfy to hold.
The Z2E is just incredible, the performance I'm getting at 13w (1080p) in some games (Digimon Story Time Stranger, High on Life to name a couple) is just wild when to get similar performance I was doing 900p 17w on the Z1E Ally X. This also means better battery life obviously which is what I'm after most being away from home often. My hat couldn't be off more to the whole team! Also to note this is the highest SKU chip with the AI NPU stuff to come, not even the $1400 (usd) LEGO2 has this version of the Z2E chip..
The updated thumb sticks and triggers are top notch, NOT HALL EFFECT, but good. I really went into the news of this device expecting the Ally X with handles and the new amd chip, not much else. Super happy with those.
The updated fans (fan curve possibly?) are stupid quiet, more so than the Steam Deck OLED (finally) and more so than the Claw 8 AI + that everyone *claims* are so quiet.
Same note, I think the speakers are just as good as the Claw 8 AI + now, which is huge imo, gotta really have good ones to truly enjoy the Dolby Atmost experience.
Old Pros:
Screen is still awesome, perfect size.
I've never had an issue and until more 8in displays started popping up this year, never really heard much negatives about it. I think it is the best travel size, would love OLED, but not gonna get hung up on that. Crank that saturation up in AMD Adrenaline display settings!!
D-pad still rules and I'm glad it's matte and not shiny plastic as my thumb do be sweaty..
Although I prefer G Helper, Armory Crate is STILL the defacto (Windows) PC handheld software, ASUS has done great overall. MSI really needs to have a chat with them...
It's *easy* to understand how to use overall.
2 usb c ports still, thanks so much.
Cons:
I do not like using the Full Screen Experience, but feel like I should because I can't find a way to remap the big Xbox button (or the library button). I feel like I'm beta testing something I shouldn't have to regardless of the price tag.
I legit hate the library button, more so them placing the two mainly used consoles buttons (star/select) underneath that and the AC button (which does the same thing as the Xbox button??) The amount of times I've clicked the library button playing a game is insane and I can already see it wearing thin on me.
The new AC experience is sleek, but seems waaay more buggy than it has since the original z1 Ally and again, feels like I'm beta testing at a premium. Nothing excuses this, no matter what "Early adopter" stuff people wanna use to deflect the software issues. I also feels this is a major point to bring up because despite the awesome hardware, the software helps make or break the handheld device. If it's a pain to use (MSI Claw software...) it really does sour the experience.
The lack of obvious changes in this THIRD iteration, which is somewhat *understandable*, as ASUS likely aims to balance cost savings with a positive user experience.. Those being for me not having the faster UFS micro slot like on the Switch 2, not having 32gb of ram (utilizing XFE ram *saving* even further) and not including a 100w charger, but telling us how much faster the device charges with one now lol

I’ve been using the ROG Ally X for a bit and overall I’m happy with it. Performance is excellent for a handheld and it runs modern games smoothly. The screen is lcd but looks great, and the battery life is better than I expected compared to the other handhelds.
That said, this is basically a Windows PC in handheld form. It’s powerful, but not always plug-and-play. You’ll need to spend some time adjusting settings, and battery life still depends a lot on the game you’re playing.
If you want a true portable gaming PC with flexibility (Steam, Game Pass, emulators, etc.), this is a great option. Just know what you’re getting into before buying.

This handheld is an absolute powerhouse. You can play virtually anything you want on the go, and the performance is consistently smooth.
I also appreciate that it includes the Xbox app, which works flawlessly with Game Pass, and that it supports other platforms like Steam, EA App, Rockstar Launcher, and more.
The battery life is excellent, lasting much longer than I expected, and the ergonomics are surprisingly comfortable — it feels great in the hands during long gaming sessions.
Overall, I’m extremely happy with this product and excited to see what ASUS brings in future handheld devices.

Great device overall. Comfortable to hold. Screen is too small. But I am almost 50. Software is great. Fingerprint scanner is a good addition. But the fingerprint scanner hardware failed and became unusable after one week. I wish it was bigger like 8 inches and had and OLED screen. Battery is good also.

Coming from a Z1E ally this is a huge upgrade. Still a windows PC at heart, so not fully seamless but a lot closer, and tons of horsepower to run whatever games I want, even docked to the TV. Immediately upgraded to a 2TB since games are so large these days.

I was looking into getting into the PC gaming world. I've always loved the idea of owning a gaming PC, but I wanted portability. I was considering getting a gaming laptop, but ended up coming accross this. This checked all the boxes. Access to PC titles, portability, access to windows. This isn't inexpensive but it is less than the gaming laptops I was considering. It's absolutely great for traveling, and can be docked and used like a regular gaming PC. It's not an actual Xbox as the name might suggest, but does have the Xbox Full Screen Experience which is pretty cool. I highly recommend cosidering this if you are in the market of a handheld gaming device or not quite sure a PC or Laptop is a good fit for you.

This device is nearly perfect. Excellent ergonomics, light, quiet fans, solid performance. If I had to give any complaints, aside from the price, it'd be that a 7 inch screen is just too small even if the device itself if comfortable.
