    High hopes, even bigger let down

    I preordered this with a lot of hopes. Upon getting it day 1 I couldn’t have been more disappointed. It took me 2 hours to update every driver, and everything to even start using it. I downloaded a couple game, BF6, dead by day light and call of duty warzone. Every single game had massive input lag on the lowest possible settings. It’s like I was playing on a 85” tv and had input lag on a 7” screen. It was unplayable for any MP game. Single player should be a bit better to deal with but my god $1000 for you to shoot and it to not actually do it for quarter of a second is horrible for the tech that’s inside of it. I returned this after a week of use.

    Its an open box product, they delivered it without charger, in the besbuy said it comes with 3 months of gamepass ultimate but it wasn't true.

    Is this an Xbox? The answer depends.

    What is an Xbox? That's the question I found myself asking as I unboxed and setup the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X (that's a mouthful). As I broke in the machine, I found myself impressed with the performance and the overall design of the unit, but I'm still left wanting more. Design Let me first say that ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X is the most comfortable handheld I have had the opportunity to use. And it's coming from a person that has the Switch, Switch 2, and Steam Deck OLED that I've used over the years. The Ally X simply is a joy to hold and with the deep grips, it feels like I am using an Xbox controller with a screen built in. Great design and easy to hold for extended sessions. Performance Overall I would say that I am impressed with the Ally X and it's Z2 Extreme processor. Is it markedly better than my Steeam Deck OLED? I'd say it definitely performs better, but the types of games I will mostly play on the Ally X (retro games, brawlers, schmups. etc) run similarly as they don't require the full power potential of the Z2 extreme to get a good experience. When it comes to AAA games, the experience I got playing Forza Horizon 5 at 60FPS felt great overall, with some caveats I'll touch on momentarily. OS This is the biggest weakness of the Ally X at the moment and my biggest disappointment. This is not an Xbox experience. It's a Windows experience, and it doesn't even try to hide it. Upon boot, it literally tells me it's setting up my PC, just like my Windows PC... The first experience was a bit painful... it took me almost an hour to turn on the unit, go through the Windows setup (even had to name my PC like you do in Windows), download Windows updates, download Xbox updates, get into Armory Crate, and download Bios and driver updates. An hour later I was ready to play games, or so I thought. First up was Forza Horizon 5... and what I was not prepared for was waiting another 15 minutes for the shaders to compile on first launch. Microsoft promised advanced shader delivery for first party titles and my FH5 was purchased through the Microsoft Store since I have an Xbox Series X. I thought shaders would be pre-compiled, but for whatever reason, they were not. And I sat for another 15 minutes waiting to get into the game as they compiled. That's not what I want the Xbox experience to become. I don't know why this happened, but my guess is it was because of the AMD graphics driver I updated via Armory crate was new. On my Windows PC, a driver update will often cause shader recompiles, but my PC is much faster and does it quicker. Here the wait was noticeable. I hope this can be improved over time. I then installed some Steam games and they launched and worked with no issues. Only complaint here, was that when I exited Steam games, they took me back to the Steam store page, even when I launched them from the Xbox full screen experience, and the Steam screen was the store / main page, and not even big picture mode, so it was a bit jarring. I feel like the Xbox Fullscreen Experience is just not ready for primetime and I'm essentially beta testing the product. I think it likely will get better over time, but my experience is that this is more of a PC than it is an Xbox. Battery I was pretty impressed with the battery. I got about 3 hours of gameplay on a charge and your mileage will vary a bit by how demanding the games are that you play. If you are playing AAA games expect less than if you are playing indie, retro, or 2D games. But overall, I was satisfied. As I own an Xbox Series X and a Windows gaming PC, having a handheld enables me to take my games on the go, and the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X is the one handheld I have that allows me to enjoy my Xbox games that I purchased on the Xbox store (and that are part of Play Anywhere) to work on both my PC and handheld. So for games like Forza Horizon 4, 5, Motorsport, Starfield, etc... I can play these on all my devices. But it's still not an Xbox... as not all of my Xbox games are available on the Ally X. Games I own on physical disc are not playable, console exclusives like College Football 26 are not available, but I feel this is more of a marketing problem that Microsoft needs to clean up. In the end, I'm excited to see where Microsoft and Asus take the Xbox Ally X and how it improves. I think this is a great device to consider, especially if you don't have another handheld. Just understand that as an early adopter, there are likely to be some growing pains, and it's much more of a Windows experience today than it is an Xbox console experience.

    Purchased this as an excellent open box online, only to find out the right handle was broken, and it looked like someone had opened the device. be careful buying open box online

    Do not buy, wait for the 2nd generation.

    Item took 3 plus hours for initial setup. The controller would not register even though it was set to automatic. I had to reset the entire device to factory to get it to work. The controller grips are very vertical and does not feel like an actual Xbox controller. Not all Xbox games are playable on the device. I was not able to play the game I downloaded while at work due to no internet connection even though I was playing non internet required games. Overall terrible experience and device. Returned within 5 days. It is not worth the money or frustration.

    While this is an impressive handheld (PC) the performance still isn’t there for the price. You’re paying $1000 for the power of a series s in you hand. Plus we’re moving onto a new console generation and this thing will be outdated in a year. If you’re into AAA titles stay away. If you’re looking to play a couple year old campaign games go for it. Wait if you’re looking for future proof. This was not able to run battlefield 6 without crashes all the time. I tweaked all settings it just can not handle it and performed subpar for madden.

    Device fine, but horrible customer service. Device advertised with Game Pass but they denied me Game Pass benefits, a $60 value that negated the price difference from new and used. Bad value, bad service. Won’t buy from Best Buy again.

    I’m sure the rog ally x is a great product. However I wouldn’t know as I received an empty box upon arrival. Best Buy packages these things in next to nothing so of course fedex or a warehouse employee will take it. I did get a refund and I’m pretty sure it was FedEx as I seen the driver on my camera running away in a hoodie trying to hide his face. Either way I got a empty box

    Terrible Service from everyone

    Item was never delivered. Shipping company OnTrac updated as out for delivery on Friday morning and didn’t update all weekend. Followed up on Monday to figure out where my package was and they ran an investigation, was told Tuesday that the result of the investigation was that they delivered my item and it is now Best Buy’s problem. Now my day 1 $1,000 preorder is being predicted to be available 2-months later.

    Good product bad support

    The device itself is amazing. I got it on release played it for 3 weeks loving it. Then I noticed a dead pixel.Sent it off to geek squad for repair and they broke the fan during repairs. It's now been a month wait with no Eta on when they can get a fan replacement and refusal to give a replacement device.

    Bad qc at launch dead pixels in screen

    i had to return mine one day after receiving form preorder on October 16th had a dead pixel in the screen i would have hoped best buy would honor my preorder and try to fast track shipping since i cant do anything about manufacture defects, no i was at the end of the list so i just returned it bad qc at ASUS and should have been 200 dollars cheaper at launch

    Not worth 1k, just get steam deck

    So i try upgrade the storage and it wouldn't load up the cloud save and the performance is extr and downgrade its like playing the original xbox when your play fortnite, it drains the battery 2x faster than steam deck

    Very upset with this , 1st time buying hand held and it froze on the 1st screen tried everything!!! And couldn’t do anything I returned to best buy , geek squad couldnt figure it out i tried every reset i could and nothing .

    Before I begin, I need to clarify something. ASUS and XBOX have been advertising this handheld as an XBOX, and you need to know that it is NOT an XBOX. I’m not sure why they have been marketing this handheld as an XBOX which is giving everyone false expectations. This is still 100% A Windows machine with very tight XBOX integration. If you can get past that then you’re going to love this handheld. Let’s begin, So, once you hold this thing you immediately realize how special this device is. The XBOX grips just feel like they mold perfectly to your hands. You turn the device on, and the beautiful 7-inch screen greets you with an ROG and XBOX Logo and then boots immediately into a custom XBOX Full-Screen user interface which is designed to make the device feel like an XBOX console, and in that aspect they have succeeded. The new interface is designed to only boot up certain Windows background processes that are needed to play games. The idea is to improve performance and deliver exceptional experience. I really do like this as it simplifies the entire process of turning on the machine and jumping right into your games. If you need to you can swipe up on the screen and tap “Windows desktop” to boot up the rest of the operating system. That brings your right to the desktop experience you are used to if you’re a windows user. I personally always do this so I can play music via Spotify and read emails in between gaming. This to me makes the device much more useful. It’s not just a gaming system, it’s a full-blown PC in a handheld form factor and I LOVE that! With all of that said let’s dive into all the features this handheld offers. Screen: The handheld comes with a 7-inch 1080p IPS display that is capable of a 120Hz refresh rate. This display has excellent color reproduction and fluid motion. It’s worth also noting that this is NOT an OLED display, however to me it’s not a dealbreaker at all. It performs very well both in game and for day-to-day tasks in windows. Speakers: The speakers on this device are first class! With the volume at 40% the audio reproduction for a device this small is stunning. Vocals are clear and bright, the mids are center and present, there’s even a nice little thump when playing something with bass. I don’t know how they put such amazing speakers in this thing, but they worked some ASUS magic in the audio department. Build: This device is solid. As I mentioned earlier, the Xbox grips just feel like they contour perfectly to your hands which makes the device feel SUPER comfortable to hold and for extended gaming sessions. Everything is solid feeling. There are no creaks or flexing that occur when handling the device. All of the buttons feel top notch and the triggers are buttery smooth. The joysticks feel exactly like those you would find on an XBOX controller. All in all, I give this device a 10 out of 10 for build quality. Battery: The XBOX Ally X has an 80Wh battery which provides me with about 2 -3 hours of battery life when gaming. I normally play in performance mode which is the middle setting that gives you an excellent gaming experience while not burning through battery life. If you’re playing a less demanding game on this setting you could most likely double that number if not more. Fans: The cooling system on this device works well. If you’re in a quiet setting you can hear the fans going, but they are very quiet and efficient. The fans do their job and keep the handheld nice and cool. Compatibility: For gaming, XBOX is front and center, however you can install Steam, Epic, EA, Battlenet, and more. Because this handheld is a Windows PC at heart, you are free to use whichever gaming service you choose. This goes back to what I was saying about the device being a windows machine isn’t a bad thing at all. Connectivity: USB-C X 2 is standard on this handheld, and you get two (2) ports! Some will say that instead of both being on the top of the unit, they prefer that one on the top and one on the bottom. I don’t really have a preference about this, I’m just glad we have two (2) ports. Theres also a MicroSD slot, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth support. I regularly pair my Bluetooth headphones with my handheld to listen to music while I’m gaming. It all just works so well. Gaming: I like to play COD on my XBOX Ally X. I usually have all settings on high and get about 70-80fps which provides me with a fast, smooth and fluid experience. All the controls are super responsive and playing on this handheld your do not feel as if your giving up anything compared to playing on a console or PC. I can now play while sitting on my couch or on the go, and that alone is worth so much. Customization: With Armory Crate you can fully customize the GPU and CPU performance as well as various other settings. I personally turn off the lights when the device is sleeping or else they will fade in/ fade out and I’m just not a fan. Within the app you can perform calibration of the controller, sync your lighting with AURA, change and manually adjust the color and pattern of the RGB lights around the joysticks, view and perform system updates and more. It’s a good hub that if you wish, allows you to customize the device even further. Conclusion: I just want to say thank you to ASUS and XBOX for coming together and making this great device. I’m thoroughly enjoying every minute I spend with it and can’t wait to see what’s next from either company! If you’re thinking about this device, just grab one. Once you understand how the device works, I think you will appreciate and enjoy the ROG XBOX Ally X the same way I do!

    The Y button was stuck I didn’t even have it for a day and I returned it Sick system but idk how I feel about that. Best Buy wanted to hold 1100 for another month til the next shipment came…

    Package arived with pressure damage on the screen, and the controller sounded as if somthing broke inside of side of it. The price is horrible and dilivery was horrible. PLEASE BUY ELSEWHERE

    Was awesome for the 2 days i got to use it, had a bad battery and best buy nor asis was any help, had to send it back and am waiting a month for a new one... insane for a $1000 device.
