Arrived with non fuctioning touch screen.

Great portable game machine

With expectations that this is meant for a niche market and not a gaming device for hardcore gaming this is a pretty good device. It is called the Xbox Ally X because of the partnership with Xbox and the Xbox overlay basically on top of windows. It is supposed to shave off processes on regular windows that isn't needed to save on memory use. With 24GB of RAM it helps but from my use I haven't noticed it. Specs: 1080P LCD IPS screen 24GB DDR5 Memory 1TB SSD(Samsung OEM) AMD Z2 extreme processor I've played GTA 5, Star wars the knights of the old Republic 1 and 2, cyberpunk, Fallout 4, Mass Effect Legendary edition, and Skyrim on this . I've used various platforms like Steam, GOG, epic game store and EA play store fronts for these games. The Xbox overlay is pretty nice to have to have all the games in one place and store fronts. In terms of performance of the games with lowered graphics fidelity it's great. It's like playing on a Xbox console. The grips on this also feels like you're playing on a Xbox as well just with a screen in the middle. The RGB lights on the joysticks area gives it a nice touch as well

Excellent PC Handheld, Xbox Tweaks Needed
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Quick version - This is a windows PC handheld with excellent, well refined hardware, and an Xbox front-end experience that works well once set up. It’s likely to be tweaked and improved over time. If you go into it hoping for a “Xbox Console” type of experience, it will be frustrating. If you go into it as a sort of “ROG Ally 2”, you’ll be satisfied with the great ergonomics, good performance, and good battery life. I’ve been a PC gamer for 15+ years, and I’ve owned several consoles too to supplement the PC, for exclusive games, or for low friction TV gaming. I’ve also used many PC handhelds. The device comes in a nice box with the power adapter. It does not include a case, which is a sad omission - the first party case costs $70 extra. I wish it was included, or maybe a 30-40 dollar add-on instead of $70. As I unboxed it, I was interested to check out the ergonomics with the grips and triggers. It all feels excellent. The grips feel good, the triggers are comfortable, and everything feels extremely well made and refined. The D-Pad also feels great. The 7” screen, while the same as previous ROG ally’s, is a great screen. It gets bright, and the 1080p resolution gives it a nice high pixel density without being total overkill. The 120hz refresh rate is also great and comes into play well in games like Halo. When you power on the Xbox Ally, you have to go through the standard windows setup. It then takes you into the new Xbox Full Screen experience. You will want to switch to the windows desktop and update the device in 4 places - Windows Update, Armory Crate, MyAsus, and the Microsoft Store. It’ll take several reboots and you’ll want to check the apps again after the reboots to make sure it “found” all the updates. If you’re a PC gamer, you get that. You’re used to it, and consider it just a normal part of the windows OS. But if you were hoping for a more streamlined experience like a console, you’ll just be frustrated. I hope, after a bit more work, that Microsoft can streamline this experience in a couple of ways. 1 - the windows setup itself could “feel” more like an xbox console. 2 - all of the updates for the device could take place solely inside of the xbox fullscreen experience. That, coupled with the full compatibility and capability of windows, would be an excellent experience. The Xbox full screen experience itself is actually quite cool. The system boots into it, and there’s no windows desktop. When you hold the xbox button, it goes into an app switcher which also works well. It is also from here you can open the full windows desktop. There’s a dedicated library button which you might accidentally press but I got used to it. Steam is pre-installed as part of the “apps” on the xbox full screen experience, and it launches directly into big picture mode. This is great, as many PC gamers have a large library of steam games, and I spend a lot of time just browsing my steam library and the steam store, and with this device that’s really easy to do. There’s also an Asus button that launches the overlay of armory crate. Here you can change the power modes and other settings. People with PC handheld experience will be right at home here, and the refinements Asus has made to this over the years are excellent. Game performance is great. Older games are great, and many recent games too. Battlefield 6, which runs great, unfortunately crashes after about 15 minutes, but I expect that’ll be fixed real soon with a graphics driver update. The device is super refined - the fans are quiet, temperatures appear to be good, and on lower power games like stardew valley, power draw is super low. I’m not going to delve into exact metrics for game performance, there’s much information already available online, but I can say this is certainly faster than the Z1 Extreme chip but not by a wide margin. It definitely performs better at lower power settings like the 13 and 17w modes. By adjusting game settings, you can expect decent to great performance in almost any game. I played several hours of games over a few days, a wide variety of games from Stardew valley and Persona 5, to Stellar Blade and Battlefield, and was impressed. It even runs oblivion remastered pretty well, which is a tough game to run. It’s not going to compete with a desktop PC with high end hardware, but that’s not the point. Other notes - The speakers are really good for a handheld. Very loud and clear, probably the best I’ve heard in any PC handheld. The integration between touch screen and controller use works really well too. The rumble and trigger rumble is really good too. In a game like Halo Master Chief Collection, the combination of the good speakers and good rumble really enhances the gameplay. As far as the price goes, for a premium PC handheld, it’s basically in line with expectations. But as an “xbox” product, it’s not priced in a traditional sense with expected software sales to help subsidize the device, so it appears very expensive in a console landscape. But I’d argue that this isn’t really a console, it’s a PC handheld that helps bring forth a new Xbox platform that is more of a PC hybrid device. Overall this is a good device. It has great, even excellent hardware, and the software side is a decent start with the xbox fullscreen experience, but I hope they refine it even further to streamline the setup. I expect they will - rumors point to a xbox future of PC/console hybrid type of devices, so further refinements to the windows side of things are an exciting prospect for all PC gamers. The only other improvements I’d like to see is a 2TB SSD installed as standard and the $70 case included with it. Pros - Performance, ergonomics, good start with xbox fullscreen experience in windows. Great speakers, good screen, performance improvements, big battery. Probably my favorite PC handheld hardware. Cons - Hoping for more refinement to windows as there is still not enough of a “console feel”. Would like to see the case and a 2TB ssd included. Absolutely a recommended device for a person looking for a PC gaming handheld.

Great hardware but this is no Xbox

On the one hand, it's a great piece of hardware that Asus clearly has put time and energy into refining from the first Rog Ally. Ergonomically it's one of the most comfortable handhelds I've ever held and used with the grips being a great addition to firmly hold and use the device. Thermally the device is very cool even when under load. You can't feel any heat from the plastic at all and the only warmth you can really feel is if you need to touch the touchscreen. Processing-wise the Z2E a very clear bump up from the Z1E and the integrated graphics do a pretty good job, even better than using the same integrated graphics at the same VRAM amounts and settings and a laptop with a much higher TDP. You're always going to be GPU limited with this device but it can get to 60 fps pretty competently in slightly older games and even more recent games it can do 108p at medium settings pretty well at 40-ish fps From a hardware standpoint, it's perfect and the only thing that could possibly have made it better would be having a more powerful APU. The software however is a different beast altogether. Starting from the initial windows boot, the software effort just seems half baked. You get sent to the standard windows set up screen where its also is downloading updates and finishing set up, except the progress bar never moved so there was no indication on how long the process would take. After finally getting in to windows, you then have to go through the trouble of downloading windows updates+store updates for another 2 hours which again either had issues starting or progressing pass. Getting onto the main xbox full screen experience, it's actually not that bad. I find the UI relatively pleasant and simple to use. The unified library is somewhat of a hit or miss scenario. You can add other storefronts but you can't actively search them or even your library from the xbox search, you have to open them individually and search them that way. Even then you can't even uninstall them from the library UI, again requiring you to use the specific store front. This could stand some major integration improvements. Finally regarding the xbox part of this equation, it's again a mixed experience. Gamepass integration is indeed pretty good especially if you're mainly using it as a gamepass machine. However it can be very confusing to see multiple entries for the same title in your library between the xbox cloud play version and the pc version. The lack of knowing whether you have a PC copy of a game you own is very detrimental to the experience. A great deal of marketing has been spent on showcasing that this is an xbox device and this is the future of xbox but so far the play anywhere initiative is lack luster and mutliple games within a series or even the same bundle may have different capabilities (I bought the RE Remake bundle on sale and somehow RE2 remake is a play anywhere title and so came with a PC copy but RE3 remake is not requiring you to either play the PC gamepass version or play your xbox copy through the cloud). If this is the future of Xbox, Microsoft either needs to spend a great deal of time vastly improving this experience or change their plan for Xbox entirely because as of right now this is a highly disjointed and confusing software experience. In conclusion, the hardware itself is solid and if you're going to mostly use it for gamepass it's a good buy. Outside of that, I just don't know if the value or experience is there otherwise to make it worth it.

The battery life is fantastic, and the 7” screen is good for my use case. An Oled or slightly larger screen would be a good upgrade for future models, as long as they keep the same ergonomics because this thing feels FANTASTIC!
