It seems odd, now that we have Rogue One, that it took so long for the folks in charge of all things Star Wars to come up with the idea of making movies that are in the Star Wars world but not part of the main story line. I think that all Star Wars fans must be very happy that they did, and Rogue One carries the banner well.
The movie has strong main characters in Jyn Erso and Cassian Andor, as well as a fine supporting cast: K-2SO, Chirrut Imwe, and Baze Malbus. The movie magic that allowed the incorporation of characters from the 1977 Star Wars film with which this story is contemporaneous was genius. Rogue One stands up with the best of the original films and will go down as a classic in its own right.

Arguably the best looking Star Wars movie, It's a bit of a spin on the formula, a war/spy thriller more than anything.

Rogue One is Star Wars: Episode 3.5, if you will, the first outside the Skywalkwer-centered films (but not entirely) that follows the Rebel spies that steal the plans to the Death Star. The crawl in the first (the real first) Star Wars? Yeah, that. Our hero is Jyn (Felicity Jones), for all intents an orphan scrambling to survive, a prisoner of the Empire. (How? Why? Don't know.) Sprung from prison by the Rebels because of a vital daddy connection (does anyone in these movies have a boring ol' dad who works at a petro station? No? Figures.), Jyn soon is risking her life for that of the galaxy. Her chief adversary is Orson Krennic, the mastermind of the Death Star. That's it for plot I'll spill. Director Gareth Edwards (Monsters) spins a tale we all know, but makes it daring and fresh with a blow-out finale that recalls World War II mission films. The BluRay pops and soars as expected presentation wise. The extras (on a separate disc) are bare bones PR fluff. No director commentary or deleted scenes, and this may be the most famous deleted scenes film ever made. Recall those early trailers. Maybe Disney has a souped up kitchen sink and dirty linen version coming this Christmas, that would be must own. This is really the film only, with fluff features. But with the final moments of this film dedicated to cinema's greatest masked villain breaking bad, oh so gloriously bad, that's not a slam.

I was 11yrs old when Ep. IV A New Hope hit theaters (actually it was just Star Wars in '77) and while the movie could have stood on its own, I was no doubt excited when The Empire Strikes Back came out. 40 years later and Rogue One proves to be a great "prequel" to the original. Without spoiling it for those who haven't seen Rogue One yet, I couldn't ask for a better ending that ties in perfectly to Ep. IV. I was invested in the characters, the visuals were spectacular and I definitely loved the use of characters from the old film that helped to give a sense of continuity. And WOW what a great achievement with a couple of CGI'd characters. Disney and Lucasfilm, where's 4K and DTS:X surround sound?!?

Years before the Disney take over of Lucas Films, I wondered why Lucas had never delved into the world outside of the trilogies. There were so many characters that had seemingly minute roles, or main characters that had more to tell. How exactly did Han Solo win the Millennium Falcon from Lando Calrisian? What kind of things did they get into?
This movie is exactly the kind of story I had been looking for. And they captured the Star Wars universe perfectly. The character choices were brilliant, and their performances were executed superbly by an excellent cast. I look forwards to the continuation of the new trilogy this year, but also am very excited for what comes next in the stand alone films.

Myself and many other Star Wars fans have been waiting far too long for a blockbuster, quality cinematic movie that tells one of the thousands of fantastic and exciting character side stories that are out there waiting to be told on the big screen.
Rogue One does not disappoint. Disney and LucasFilm went all out. From the wide sweeping landscapes and space-scapes to the up close and personal battles, the cinematography is brilliant and eye catching, the dialogue perfectly balanced and special effects realistic. Character development is not to drawn out like some other movies but at the same time you feel like you know them well. This side story is a must have and I can't wait for the next one!

I enjoyed the robot, K-2SO's wit and sparkling personality as well as Galen's Erso's chance to tell his daughter that he fought the Empire the only way he could. However, I didn't like him dying by the rebels' hand.
I was also very sad when K-2SO ceased to function though he did so heroically in a way that made me wish I could follow in his footsteps.
I also did not like the ending. I understood why it had to be that way, but didn't like it. That may make it sound like I didn't enjoy movie, however I did. I am just a person that prefers a happy ending. knowing that the main characters could not ride off into the sunset was just a tad disappointing for someone hoping for the happy ending.

Best Star Wars Film Since The Empire Strikes Back

Somewhat formulaic, but in an entirely Star Wars way. This film has heart, action and lots of Star Wars humor at its best. One complaint by some is how the first act/half of the film is somewhat pondering. In my view, it follows the same successful set up formula from A New Hope - introducing the new characters to us in meaningful ways.
My only real complaint is that so much of the film was cut, and we get none of that on this home video release. While I didn't expect (although I could hope) to see the original ending restored in a special cut, I did expect to see many more deleted scenes that added minor depth to the characters. These scenes are canon since they are in the novelizations.

I like the side-plot that they used for this movie and hope they do more things like this. I don't mind that it is a little grittier, and the ending was a refreshing change. On the other hand, I found some of the props and staging to be so clunky and ill thought out. How many levers do you have to pull in a movie?? Good grief! In some ways they are trapped in the technology from the imagination of the 1970's, if they want continuity of style, but some of the limitations of the technology are pretty laughable by 2017. They also need to get a little more variety in their environments. The very first and last were different, but too often it's just more desert. It gets clichéd.

What a great spin-off of the Star Wars empire. Great characters and special effects show what "The Force Awakens" should have been. Special CGI effects have brought the late Peter Cushing back to life as Grand Moff Tarkin and given us a young Princess Leia and introduces us to new heroic Rebel characters that fight to get those Death Star plans to Princess Leia and the Rebel Alliance. A sad ending for those rebels destroyed by that Death Star they fought to stop with those plans. Excellent movie with lots of great characters and those seamless special effects we have come to expect from ILM. If Star Wars VIII is as good as this, then the saga will continue probably forever on the screen.

I must admit, I had my doubts about Disney acquiring the rights to Star Wars...but my fears have been laid to rest with The Force Awakens and Rogue One.
Rogue One takes place between the events of Episode 3 and 4; it elaborates on how the Rebellion got ahold of the schematics to the Death Star. You won't see many faces from the original trilogy–this isn't their story–but Dark Vader makes a couple of appearances and is voiced yet again by James Earl Jones. A sequence toward the end with Vader is particularly impressive and is easily one of the film's highlights.
I think it's safe to say Disney did their homework and got this one right, what more can I say? A definite buy in my book.

Absolutely love this movie. We need more Star Wars like this! Even though this is on Disney+ there is nothing as great as physical 4K.
