Definitely the best NEW Star Wars film

I must admit, I was pretty stoked when the Star Wars universe came back to life, and I believe that The Force Awakens was a very good restart, but after seeing Rogue One, I feel it is one of their best films of the entire series. A completely different perspective in the Star Wars world that ends in a tragic triumph rather than the expected positive ending. A spectacular job by the writers, because I feel writing anything for this universe can be your making or your demise. As always, tremendous Blu-Ray quality, both visually and in audio, with enough extras to keep you busy for quite some time.

Many have claimed that Rogue One is the best Star Wars movie ever. I'm not going to debate that. What I love about this film is that is works perfectly as a build up to A New Hope, the Original Star Wars movie. It also gives fans hope that there will be more great Star Wars movies to come. The classic Storm Troopers are back, along with many other familiar costume designs. There's plenty of "easter eggs" to keep an eye out for which make it well worth viewing more than once. I think this film will not only satisfy SciFi fans but also many war movie fans. This film seems to draw from classic war films.

Nice SteelBook but needs better quality control

Unlike the recent Disney/Marvel SteelBooks, this one was a very good deal, at least at the sale price on the week of release. Most Best Buy SteelBooks from Disney these days do not come with the 3D disc and/or are much more expensive even on release week, when they're usually on sale. Some people have said the cover art isn't good but I do not mind it and it's nice that it's different enough than the standard Blu-ray cover while not being the not very good "pop art" style in other Best Buy exclusive SteelBooks. My only issue with this is that there was a huge scratch down the front of the cover that wasn't apparent when the plastic wrap was on it. And given the usual lack of stock in-store or online for these Steelbooks, there were none available for me to get a replacement for within the piddling 14-day return window. The SteelBook quality control needs to be stepped up a notch (scratches or dents on the case are still pretty common with SteelBooks), Best Buy needs to have a larger inventory of them available, and/or they need to increase their return period so when a restock happens 2.5 weeks later, a customer can still exchange it.

    Digital copy not in 4K

The movie looks great when you play the 4k disc. The big drawback is the digital code is not the 4k version. Every digital account I own has the movie listed at HD not 4K. A little disappointed in that. But the disc version is clear and the audio is great.

    Great Star Wars Spin-off

Having been an avid first-generation Star Wars fan, I was a little hesitant on Disney's choice to produce film(s) within the Star Wars universe that aren't part of the "core" story line that George Lucas envisioned in his original conception and vision of a 9-part "Skywalker" story line. I'm happy to say that "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" blew away all my reservations and I was pleasantly entertained. Showing fans how the Rebellion acquired the Death Star schematics went a long way to setting up and explaining the urgency of the Rebels[in "a New Hope"] to thwart the Emperor's newest weapon.

This is the best of all the Star Wars Movies. Not only does “Rogue One” overlap ever so slightly with “A New Hope,” but it takes that blockbuster’s biggest weakness — that a small one-man fighter can blow up a battlestation the size of a class-four moon — and actually turns this egregious design flaw into an asset. Now we know why the Death Star has an Achilles’ heel and how that information fell into Princess Leia’s hands. Plus (and here’s the aspect that should send longtime “Star Wars” fans into ecstatic orbit), director Gareth Edwards has finally made the first “Star Wars” movie for grown-ups.

Brings back the original magic of STAR WARS

It is no small feat that this little movie with its doomed cast can somehow recapture the spirit, the magic and the flavor of the Original 1977 Star Wars better than anything that has come since, but somehow after 40 years, ROGUE ONE becomes the little film that could. It's startling different from the start, and yet also so familiar. The filmmakers even used the same lens to get that 1977 look onscreen. That's dedication. And it pays off. An exciting Star Wars spin-off with the most jaw-dropping finale of any Star Wars movie to date. And if you have a 3D set, you'll certainly 'thank the maker'.

If this is how Disney is going to handle spin-offs from the mainline Star Wars canon (i.e. Episode 7-8-9), then I'm on board. It's not a profound or brilliant movie, but it is well-structured, fun, and gorgeous. It handles most threads smartly and manages to drive home the point that This Is Not Star Wars. It's more about legacy and sacrifice and less about laser ninjas. It's darker, it's deeper, it's different, and it's also crucial to the mainline canon without being part of it. Highly recommended, but not perfect. Five stars for technical quality and "chills down the spine" factor though.

    My Favorite Star Wars Movie

I've seen all the Star Wars movies, and up until the moment I saw Rogue One, I didn't really have a favorite. With Rogue One, we are able to see a story that doesn't focus on the top dogs of the Star Wars universe. It gives us insight into the everyday life of the soldiers that give their lives in pursuit of a safer galaxy. It reminds us that there is more to war than just a chosen few who get to shine in the limelight and live out an awkward love triangle. Rogue One is by far my favorite Star Wars movie and that's even after watching The Last Jedi which is a close second.

Better Than I Thought It Would Be

This was the first Star Wars movie I did not see in the theater. All the fuss about a female lead and 'multi-cultural' characters turned me off, especially after all the press about 'The Force Awakens'. I never noticed or cared about any of that, and having it shoved down my throat before I even saw the film discouraged me. But the film was good, the characters and acting were great, and the 'droid steals the show, for me. I missed the crawl and the ending was a bit dark, even when compared to Empire, but it felt like Star Wars most of the time. Far better than the prequels, at any rate. So if all the social justice warrior junk has kept you away, watch the film. The movie itself doesn't make a huge deal out of who is a girl or who is a minority. LucasFilm and Disney need to quit making such a big deal about it to the press, I'm not the only one who thought it was overkill. Especially for a beloved saga set a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away where nobody thinks twice about a princess leading a rebellion, Billy Dee Williams running Cloud City, or Admiral Ackbar basically being a big fish. Just make the films.
