Roku less cumbersome than a box at every TV but channel changing is not easily done and volume control on my mid priced Roku stick doesn't work.

Just go all the way budget on a chromestick or all the way for an Apple Tv

Tried everything from reboots to resets... nothing. Wrote to Roku customer service and they say they'll respond in 24 hours, but its been almost 48 and not one word. But even when it worked, I was not thrilled with the UI, it was just ok and many of the apps were low quality. I switched from an Apple TV 4 to this because of the rave reviews, but Im likely to go back. Very very disappointed.

You may want to try finding a cooler location for your Roku player. For example, avoid placing the unit inside a cabinet or other closed space. Avoid placing the unit on top of other electronic devices such as cable boxes, routers, or audio/video receivers. You'll also want to avoid placing the device in direct sunlight.
As a tip, you can check the strength of your internet connection by going to Settings > Network > Check connection. This will test the quality of the signal and also measure the speed of that connection, to be sure that your signal is strong enough.
