The Galaxy Book Pro 360 in Mystic Navy is a great looking and feeling machine before you even turn it on. Thin and light are the immediate impressions. Then I noticed how sturdy it feels. I have other laptops, and they lack the solid feel that the Galaxy Book Pro 360 possesses. The metal skin doesn’t give when gripping the notebook for carrying; it feels solid. Sit it on your desk, place a thumb under the front of the lid and gently lift. The cover rises open while the laptop body stays solidly on the desktop. Hinge tension is perfect, and it’s that kind of attention to detail in engineering that makes a great first impression. Documentation says to completely charge before first use; that took 50 minutes using the included cable and 65-watt USB C power brick. The battery easily carries me through a day. After the initial out-of-the-box Windows setup, account sign-in and updates (altogether, about 30 minutes), this computer is lightning quick. From power-on to ready-to-work takes about 10 seconds. Click a program’s icon, and it loads without delay. It feels almost instantaneous. I’ve been using Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets since the S5. You could probably say I’m a fanboy. The Galaxy Book Pro 360 feels like a Samsung phone with a Windows 10 wrapper, and I really like that. There are familiar cues wherever I look. Integration with the Galaxy apps is tight. The “Gallery” app is handy; take pictures while I’m out, and they’re available on my computer when I return to it. I love a touchscreen laptop, and the S Pen adds a level of precision and functionality that my fingers can’t match. Using it is not yet second nature, but I’m learning. The screen folds around completely to function as a tablet. This is where the S Pen really shines. I’ve been using Samsung’s Notes app on the phone for years. When I saw Notes is an included app on the PC, I opened it and was greeted by a much more robust piece of software than is on my phone. Handwriting recognition is surprisingly accurate, and when I get a little lazy with the penmanship, corrections are easy enough. I do a lot of document editing. In the tablet configuration, the combination of the 15.6” screen and S Pen makes document markup a breeze. The S Pen is pen sized (a slightly smaller diameter) but larger than any stylus I’ve used with a phone or other portable device (think a certain dual-screen handheld game system…), and it feels great in the hand. Navigation and notations using the S Pen feel very natural. I’ve never been an artsy sort. The S Pen and Samsung PENUP app might be some small steps toward changing that. I can peruse the creations of other users who have elected to share their work. Who knows what might inspire that creative urge? So far, I’m enjoying the many coloring book templates. They range from simple shapes to more complex works. Kind of reminds me of paint-by-numbers I used to do. The color selection tools and variety of paintbrushes make for seemingly limitless possibilities. Incorporating the new notebook into my professional life was a breeze. I use a proprietary software that generates large files -- potentially several gigabytes per day -- and the Galaxy Book Pro 360 just rolls along without a hiccup or complaint. Transferring the files to external storage is fast thanks to the USB C connectivity. File uploads and downloads also happen at top speed and are delay-free thanks to Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) support. The AMOLED screen is crisp and bright. Resolution tops out at 1920x1080. That feels just right on the 15.6” screen. The Windows desktop initially felt crowded. The Taskbar was a little too tall. The Start menu and app icons felt too large. Finally, it occurred to me to check the display settings. Adjusting the size of “text, apps, and other items” from the default 125% to 100% fixed it. This is the first time I’ve used an AMOLED screen as a computer monitor. Contrast is off the charts with no backlight/edge lighting bleed through. Blacks are inky black. I never realized how gray “black” is on my LCD monitors! Colors leap off the screen and are vibrant and beautiful. Movies and photos come to life. If I was pressed to level any criticism against the Galaxy Book Pro 360, it would be directed at ports. There are 2 USB-C, 1 Thunderbolt, a headphone/mic jack, and a MicroSD slot. While I love the thin and light form factor, I miss being able to just plug in my HDMI monitor, USB peripherals and ethernet cable. In order to use some of the legacy hardware that I rely on, a USB-C hub with expanded ports is required. I’ll happily make that tradeoff. I am using a USB-C hub that provides HDMI connectivity over the Thunderbolt port in addition to gigabit Ethernet and USB connections for the wired keyboard, wired mouse, and a couple other legacy USB peripherals. I have noticed performance issues such as reduced responsiveness in the keyboard and lag when using the mouse. I’ve also had some issues with Zoom’s Windows app intermittently freezing during meetings. For the past year, Zoom has been working fine on a 10-year-old Intel i5 notebook and on a year-old Ryzen 5 notebook. I am hopeful that a dedicated Thunderbolt-to-HDMI adapter, which will allow me to move Ethernet and the USB peripherals to their own USB-C port, will solve the problem. Overall, I am very impressed by the Samsung Galaxy Book Pro 360 and would recommend it to anyone if you’re willing and able to work with/around the port limitations.
