Not bad for a cheapo phone but needs a lot of work

My brother got this cheap phone for my mom, who's a newbie to smartphones. For basic tasks like calling, texting and getting online, it does the job. It's definitely not for anyone whose life is on their phone because this phone will slow you down. Camera quality, eh, it's a cheap phone so don't expect to win any awards. Screen however isn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Battery life so far is pretty good. Call quality is excellent and speaker is phenomenal for such a cheap phone. Sits very nicely in your hands and it's not too heavy. Here are some annoyances I've found, even though it's barely been a week. Android Nougat on this phone is, well, it's a Samsung's take on it so it's a little confusing. I've read that Samsung's version of 7.0 was the best they've had so far and if that's the case, yikes! My LG is so much easier to use. The settings are just cluttered and sometimes it takes forever to find what you're looking for. It's definitely not intuitive and you will spend quite a bit of your time trying to figure out where everything is. The lock screen timeout is really short, like 5 seconds at most. I tried to change this in the display setting as well as the lock screen secure settings but the only thing that helps is if you turn off the power saving mode, and that only lengthens it by a tiny amount. Wifi isn't actually that bad but sometimes, it's just really slow for no reason. Google play store is a random chance when it comes to downloading apps. Sometimes it's blazing fast for a phone with only 1.5 gb of ram and a slow processor. Other times, it says downloading's pending and just sits. I thought this was maybe due to the time of the day so I tried it during different times but it's all over the place. And when I use google translator, I don't get any sounds, even though I know the speaker works. Speaker on the other hand is actually very loud, like almost to the point of scaring you if you didn't know you had this phone with you. Obviously no bass from the tiny speaker but wow, it's very loud. Music quality is great too but the google music app is really annoying. You can't just open the app and pick the music to play, you have to go through a few steps to play music. And, if you just close the program, it'll still play the music so you have to actually pause it if you don't want to hear the music. Yes, the software definitely needs work but for the average person, it'll do, as long as they're not expecting anything great. Just make sure to put it in easy mode for your parents because it can be a pain otherwise. Not sure I would recommend this if you have a hard time using smartphones in general but if you have a family member who can help you set it up, it might be okay. Just be prepared that that person will be spending a lot of time trying to figure things out if they're not a previous Samsung user like me.

This phone only works with T-Mobile service. I purchased 3 phones for gifts to be used in Ghana. They do not work. Waste of time and money. None of the clerks realize they are not unlocked.

Owned this phone for almost 6 years, still using it now. This is a very basic phone, simple and reliable, served me very well. Support 4G LTE, fully functional in T-mobile and its sub-network (get yourself a new sim card from the carrier, old sim may not work properly). Not sure about AT&T, never tried and never will...

    Poor Wifi Stability

We have gone through 2 different j3 phones and both have the same issue. The connection to wifi is very unstable. Given this issue occurs on the first phone and the phone we exchanged this for I believe this is a software related issue. I have even had the samsung reps at both stores see if they can figure out the issue and could not. This occurs on all the wifi networks we attempted to connect to, not just our home wifi. Do an internet search for "Samsung Galaxy S3 Connect To Wifi But No Internet" and you will find this is a common problem right now across many samsung models. Digging deeper I think this is a Android 7.0 issue that hasn't been resolved. I would not recommend anyone get an Android 7.0 phone until they have come out with a fix. 7.1 has been pushed for some phone manfucaturers, but Samsung has not pushed it to the J3 yet. I am hoping they do soon and it will fix this issue. Finger crossed.

    Good Basic Unlocked GSM Phone

    Posted .

The 2017 Samsung Galaxy J3 is a good unlocked phone for people needing a very basic phone for calls, texting and emails. The camera takes okay, but not great, photos in bright sunshine. It struggles with demanding action games. Music and videos sound okay with good headphones and bluetooth speakers but deep bass is missing. Battery life is quite good. You can get 18 hours to 24 hours on a charge unless you are playing games, watching videos or using GPS navigation which will cut battery life in half. GPS navigation can lag a bit, taking 20 or 30 seconds to find your current location. It can "get lost" when you get to within a block or two of your destination. Odd. Note that this is a GSM phone for AT&T, T-Mobile, and their GSM partners, such as GoPhone, Cricket, Simple Mobile and MetroPcs. It will NOT work on Verizon or Sprint. They each have their own locked version. The 2016 cases do not fit the 2017 J3. Best Buy sells a terrific OtterBox case that fits the 2017 phone like a glove.

    Good backup phone

Anyone who has used an Galaxy S or IPhone will be dissapointed. As others note the phone has weak spots in responsiveness, that it does have lags switching apps and screen touch insensitivity. Sometimes the screen gets stuck in either vertical or horizontal viewing and will not rotate back to the opposite viewing, especially with Google Maps use. The good is it works as a phone and battery life is excellent. I have streamed over WiFi Netflix but the single side speaker limits the sound capability. If you have no ear buds viewing the phone in your hand w/speaker facing down to your palm the sound can improve by using the reflection to direct the sound. Texting is frustrating given the lag when typing fast, cant keep up or just does not recognize the touch sometimes. I bought the phone as an interim until the S9 came out due to a work need; as i could not upgrade to the latest android on my 4yr old Galaxy S; which never had any of these weaknesses. Casual texting is fine but if you have family or daily work email/texting, its not a good experience for that heavier volume use. Size is good fits in my shirt pocket.

Good phone with LTE band limitation

I bought this phone for travel. It is GSM unlocked but does not have the hardware for worldwide 3G and LTE bands. This was a major limitation as you can use Uber or other internet dependent apps without connecting to a wifi. This makes it a BAD choice for travel outside of the US.
