    A Worthy Galaxy Tab S Upgrade/Update

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S9+ isn’t my first tablet (Samsung, or otherwise), and I’m sure it won’t be the last…but, so far, I’m impressed with their latest endeavor. As I never had, or used, anything from the Galaxy Tab S8 line, any comparisons to the Galaxy Tab S9+ will be done with the Galaxy Tab S7+. UNBOXING, INITIAL IMPRESSIONS, & BUILD QUALITY: There’s not much to say about the unboxing, as Samsung has made it about as simple as can be. No complicated “child-proof” packaging to deal with, no excessive amount of plastic (or other environmentally-unfriendly) packaging to deal with (actually, there’s NO plastic), no unwrapping/unpackaging multiple items packaged in multiple smaller boxes inside the primary box. Simply remove the two ‘pull-tabs’ on the bottom of the box, remove the lid, pull out the tablet, remove the protective paper cover, and you’re ready to go. The S-Pen is nestled into its own ‘slot’, as are the two very small “boxes” containing the charging/data cable, and removal tool & quick start guide. Build quality is, as usual for Samsung tablets, excellent. I am not trying to put Apple down…but, I truly believe Samsung’s tablets to be of better build quality than iPads. The S9+ has the exact same dimensions as the S7+, but it is ever-so-slightly heavier (590g vs 560g). As for what causes it to be 30g heavier, honestly, I do not know…but, such a minor amount isn’t anything to worry about. SETUP: This is where I ran into a minor problem…although, resolving the problem didn’t take much effort. The ‘problem’ is that the tablet couldn’t be activated (it’s a 5G version) when I first turned it on. Why? Because the SN & IEMI wasn’t in the system (having received a production unit before they are made available for purchase by the general public, this can happen). Thankfully, a phone call, and providing certain information contained within the tablet, was all that was needed to get it activated. By the time these are available for sale, I am 100% certain the ‘problem’ I ran into will no longer exist. Thankfully, even while the ‘problem’ existed, I was able to go through the rest of the setup…I just couldn’t “access” anything. Did I mind the 20-minute phone call? Not really. Truth is, I’ve dealt with this same type of situation before…and, as such, I am better ‘equipped’ with how to resolve it. USE: First off, I want to cover one ‘negative’ I immediately discovered – for those with the keyboard cover from the Tab S7+, it will NOT work with the S9+ (the keyboard cover from the S8+ might, or might not, work…I have no clue). I quickly discovered that the back section wouldn’t work, as the camera lenses on the S9+ have a larger diameter. But, in seeing that the connectors along the bottom of the S9+ were identical to the connectors on the S7+, I figured the keyboard cover could still be used. Unfortunately, when I attached the keyboard section, I got a pop-up near the bottom of the screen informing me that the keyboard “was designed for a different device, and will not work properly”. As such, I now have no choice but to order the keyboard cover for the S9+ (before I finished typing this review, the keyboard cover has been ordered…and, according to the most recent email, it is shipping today). Since I don’t have a keyboard to use with the S9+, I can’t exactly fully test the new tablet. However, I AM still able to do some testing, such as benchmark tests. For the purpose of this review (and, to get the review posted quicker), I have elected to just use Geekbench 6. Before running the benchmarks, I could already tell the S9+ was faster than the S7+…but, by how much, I didn’t yet know. I ran the CPU tests first. The S7+ took 7:07, while the S9+ only took 5:22, which equates to approximately a 25% increase in speed on the newer tablet. Moving over to the GPU tests, and starting with the OpenCL tests, the S7+ took 3:10, while the S9+ completed the tests in almost half the time, at 1:40. Switching the GPU testing to Vulkan, the S7+ & S9+ completed these tests in 5:49 & 2:57, respectively…again, almost half the time. While the amount of time each test took to complete on the S9+ (compared to the S7+) was “amazing”, it’s the actual scores that were “beyond incredible”. The S7+ had the following scores – CPU 1273 single-core & 3183 multi-core, GPU Open CL 3385 & GPU Vulkan 3258. The S9+, on the other hand, scored the following – CPU 2070 single-core & 5423 multi-core, GPU Open CL 9524 & GPU Vulkan 8829. As you can see from the actual scores, the S9+’s actual performance is almost 3x that of the S7+. Considering the Tab S7 line came out only two years ago, the CPU & GPU performance increases are well beyond what I could have ever imagined. ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS: For the most part, I don’t have any “additional thoughts”. I don’t (yet) have a keyboard, so I can’t put the tablet through any laptop-like testing. But, in terms of the benchmark tests, I am amazed. I’ve owned previous generations of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab series of tablets, and, while there has always been ‘improvements’ in performance, this is the biggest jump I can recall. FINAL VERDICT: In short, I am VERY glad I skipped the S8+. The S9+ is such an amazing jump (past the S7+), that, had I purchased the S8+, and then realized the performance levels of the S9+, I would have been seriously annoyed at myself for having gotten the S8+. If you’re looking for your first tablet, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9+ (or, if you really NEED a larger screen, the Tab S9 Ultra) should be your ONLY consideration. If you currently own a Galaxy Tab S7+ (or equivalent), or an older Android tablet…or, even a tablet from another brand…you should SERIOUSLY consider upgrading to the Galaxy Tab S9 series. Scratch that…don’t ‘consider’ it, just do it.

This tablet is excellent: a beautiful and very responsive OLED screen, snappy processor, and I love the S-Pen and overall functionality. I've had the Tab S6, which up till now was a great tablet in and of itself, but having an increase screen of 12.4" has been really nice. The form factor is thin but strong, and generally manageable. Overall a great addition for media consumption and even productivity.

My wife loves Samsung Ultra 9 tablet. Bought it for her birthday and she hasn't put it down since. Super fast and capable of much more than we will ever use. Link's to all of our Samsung TVs and phones. She absolutely loves it.

The apple of android, your getting a good product but not the best value to price. There are other tablets that give more value for how much you spend but this is still high quality at it's finest I will complain and say battery does feel like it dies faster than it should. Who knows, maybe I have a faulty product.

I'm sad to ever give samsung a 1 star, I've spent tens of thousands of dollars on samsung products including TV's, laptops, tablets and phones and never had any issues with any of them. I thought their manufacturing was bullet proof. Purchasing this tablet however has proved me wrong unfortunately. I put it on the charger at 30% Tuesday night, Wednesday morning I attempted to turn it on, zero luck. I tried all of the trouble shooting methods....again zero luck. I now have a dead 6 week old tablet. It's a fantastic looking but super expensive paper weight. Glad I also bought the now useless $300 keyboard.
