Why did I wait so long?
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was late to the game when it comes to smart watches but after I got it, i immediately realized that I should have bought one earlier. Although it's large, it's very comfortable to wear and has so many ways to customize it.

Really good watch/health coach/phone extension
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Solid construction and durable. Syncs with my Samsung phone perfectly. Very customizable features. My only complaint would be to add a physical button to turn off the counter when I am engaged in an activity. I just have a hard time with the soft control on that feature though my younger friend can do it with ease.

A FASTER & MORE POWERFUL SMARTWATCH
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro Bluetooth Smartwatch (Model SM-R920NZKAXAA) improves on the prior Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 models with some additional features, and most notably with a much larger, higher capacity battery. The Exynos W920 Dual-Core 1.18GHz (5 nm) CPU is at the core of the new Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro smartwatches. A Mali G68 GPU supports the beautiful, bright, sharp and responsive touchscreen. The Galaxy Watch 5 is equipped with 1.5 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage. The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro has a very nicely fabricated 45mm diameter, very strong yet lightweight black titanium watchcase compared to the Watch 5s Aluminum watchcase. The case is approximately 10mm thick, or slightly less than ½”. There are two large mappable function pushbuttons on the right side of the case which also function as sensors for some of the health monitoring functions. The rotating bezel of the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic is not a feature of the Galaxy Watch 5 or 5 Pro. There is a “virtual” rotating bezel functionality deployed in the touchscreen which performs in the same manner as the mechanical rotating bezel. The raised circumferential lip of watchcase above the screen provides a perfect stabilizing and guiding surface for using a finger to scroll the display with the “touch bezel”. The touch bezel works very well, and the scrolling speed is very fast with absolutely no lag. The back of the watch, which appears to be partially composite, houses the health sensors. This model has a soft black silicone watchband which tapers from 24mm at the watchcase to 19mm at the clasp. The infinitely adjustable metal clasp type closure latches magnetically. The watchband is extremely easy to adjust or readjust to the optimum fit. Owing to this watchband, I find the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro to be extremely comfortable on my wrist. Samsung refers to this unique watchband as the “D-Buckle Sport Band”. The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro weighs only 75 grams (2.6 ounces). The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro has a bright and sharp, always-on Super AMOLED touchscreen, with 450 x 450 pixel resolution and 330 PPI. The display is smaller than that which the 45mm (1.77”) case profile can actually accommodate. Although the watchcase is 45mm, the display screen measures approximately 35mm (1.37”). Resultantly there is a rather wide black bezel surrounding the round display panel. The super AMOLED display screen is protected by a sapphire crystal with a hardness rating of 29 GPa for the Watch 5 Pro, which is purported to be extremely durable and scratch resistant. The Galaxy Watch 5 (non-Pro) model has a crystal rated at 24 GPa as compared to the Galaxy Watch 4 models with displays having a hardness of 15 GPa. It appears to me that the screen is further protected from some impacts by the elevated lip surrounding the screen. The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is specified to meet MIL-STD-810H which is the latest iteration of the environmental performance testing for shock, drop, temperature etc. and it also claims compliance with IP68 which pertains to ingress protection for dust, dirt, sand and liquid. Samsung claims that the Galaxy Watch 5 and 5 Pro are water resistant to 5 ATM. Five atmospheres is equivalent to 169.498’ of water. The Galaxy Watch 5 sensors are comprised of Accelerometer, Ambient Light, Compass, Gyroscope, Barometer, Heart Rate, ECG, Blood Pressure, Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (body composition and BMI) and SpO2 (blood oxygen saturation). Apparently, there is also an infrared skin temperature sensor, which is not active as yet. I can only speculate if that temperature sensor is intended for sleep monitoring applications or health monitoring functionality, which might be very prudent in this age of Covid. An electrocardiogram sensor (ECG/EKG) is possibly the most valuable function that a health and fitness smartwatch can have. It can potentially save your life by detecting the life threatening cardiac electrical abnormality atrial fibrillation (AFib), which is an irregular heartbeat condition. It is wonderful that the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro includes an ECG sensor, however unless the watch is paired with a Samsung Galaxy smartphone, the ECG functionality is not available. That is because Samsung’s ECG requires the installation of the Samsung Health Monitor app (not to be confused with the Samsung Health app). The Health Monitor app is only compatible with and installable upon Samsung phones. Those of us with non-Samsung phones cannot benefit from the ECG functionality. I am extremely disappointed by that. The imbedded sensors provide data for health and activity monitoring including tracking steps, sleep, heart rate and oxygen saturation. GPS functionality augments exercise activity monitoring by generating distance travelled data, and is of course essential for routing functionality for hiking, biking and related activities. The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro runs Google Wear OS, Version 3.5 with Samsung’s new One UI Watch 4.5. One UI Watch 4.5 adds a full QWERTY keyboard function and enhanced telephone calling and accessibility options. There are numerous apps preloaded on the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, and of course there is a panoply of apps available from the Google Play Store. The preinstalled apps have a major emphasis on sports and fitness, including route tracking with GPX files. The automatic detection of various activities is a function of Samsung Health. There is a variety of highly customizable watch faces available. With both a microphone and speaker imbedded in the watch, the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro supports placing and receiving phone calls, as well as voice interaction with Bixby or Google Assistant. Wireless connectivity includes Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC and GPS. I have the Bluetooth version of the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, and there is also an LTE cellular model. The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is equipped with a WPC wireless charger terminated with a USB-C connector. A true highlight is the large battery in the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. The 590 mAh Li-Ion battery will hopefully provide respectable operating times, even if it does not achieve the 80 hours of use that is claimed. Initial setup and configuration of the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is relatively straightforward but includes the need to sign into a Samsung account, download and install apps and grant lots of permissions. The Galaxy Wearable app guides the setup process. There is an onboard tutorial to assist in familiarization with the watch. In addition to the Galaxy Wearable app, it is also necessary to install and configure the Samsung Health app on the smartphone. I am finding that the Samsung Health app is imposing a very significant drain on the battery of my Android smartphone. The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro performs nicely. Phone and text notifications, including vibration alerts (if desired) have been reliable. Connectivity for cell calls has been stable and reliable, and phone call audio quality with the built-in speaker is clear. Cell phone app notifications on the watch is another great convenience. The touchscreen works well and is responsive, although because of the small screen size and the congestion of menu items it is sometimes difficult to precisely select an intended touch-target or make a precise adjustment (such as volume levels). Screen scrolling and swipes are absolutely fast and fluid without any annoying lag or jitter. I really like that the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro uses the Google ecosystem, however I am genuinely disappointed that ECG functionality is not available to me because the required Samsung Health Monitor app is only available in the closed, proprietary Samsung ecosystem. The Galaxy Wearable app is excellent, and provides the easiest, fastest and most comprehensive means of interfacing with and managing almost every aspect of the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is a very nice smartwatch which performs very well and has an attractive appearance. It has many features and functions that are genuinely helpful and useful in fitness and sports activities, in wellness tracking and in daily living as well. I believe that the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro provides an excellent balance between being a pure, dedicated sports watch, and serving as an “everyday” smartwatch. I really appreciate that the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro has a decently sized touchscreen that is incredibly bright and has excellent resolution. I am looking forward to having some long-term experience with this excellent smartwatch.

Best Android Smartwatch?
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.best android smartwatch? The first thing I noticed when unboxing the Samsung Galaxy Watch Pro was the size. Samsung offers two variants of the Galaxy Watch 5 - the Watch 5 and the Watch 5 Pro. While they share much of the same functionality, the Watch 5 Pro has a sturdier design and a larger battery than the standard Watch 5 and offers a few more features for those who spend time in outdoor activities such as biking or hiking. It's also about 30-40% thicker, which may take some getting used to. The band is a little different, but it's quite comfortable and I had no issues with it coming loose during more robust activities. The Watch 5 Pro is stated to be more durable than the regular Galaxy Watch 5. It features a raised rim around the screen, titanium construction and stronger sapphire crystal glass on the screen. It's dust and water resistant with an IP68 rating. I've taken it on a dusty mountain bike ride and dragged it through the dirt during a crash. After washing it off, it still looks brand new, but only time will tell how it might stand over time (or repeated crashes). So far, so good though. The Galaxy Watch 5 tracks more than 90 exercise types and can auto-detect certain workouts like running, swimming and elliptical after 10 minutes of activity. The UI is pretty user friendly, and it offers an abundance of customization -- far too many to cover here. Suffice it to say it's easy to change the watch face and there are plenty of them available, and the watch face itself can be customized further. Some of the features are somewhat buried in menus, but exploring the menus is not that difficult. Earlier I mentioned the Pro added a few more features, which I will cover here. The first is track back. This is a feature which uses GPS mapping to track your route and using turn-by-turn guidance return via the same path you travelled to get back to your starting point. This would be helpful if you're walking or biking on new trails you are not yet familiar with. The second is turn-by-turn navigation with voice and map guidance to direct you over a new route. The last feature is the ability to import and export routes for turn-by-turn navigation. For example, I use Trailforks for mountain bike trails. I can import Trailforks gpx files to the Watch 5 Pro and use the data for turn-by-turn guidance over new bike trails. Very cool. Note that currently these features are only supported for hiking and biking, but if those activities are supported, I would think it would come in handy for similar activities such as running or cross country skiing. So far, I have found the GPS accuracy to be very good. Most of the health features have been carried over from the previous mode, however the Watch 5 now has an infrared sensor. It's not active yet, and it's not been announced when it will be, but Samsung has stated it will be used to measure body status during sleep. Along with all the standard health features (heart rate, etc.) the Watch 5 also has a blood oxygen sensor and ECG. Even though it's an Android smart watch, in order to use those features, you will need to pair the watch with a Samsung Galaxy phone. The Watch 5 Pro has large 590 mAh battery which Samsung claims can last up to 80 hours with normal use. In the two days I've used it, battery is down to 38% of a full charge, though that did include a fair amount of GPS usage, and I did not turn on airplane mode to use the GPS only mode. Still, I was a bit disappointed in how fast the battery dropped, but I guess I should also consider all the things I had the watch doing over the last two days. Perhaps it feels worse than it is. On a good note, fastcharge will allow you to charge the watch from 0 to about 45% in only 30 minutes using a 25w charger. The watch comes with a charging cable which attaches magnetically in any orientation but does not come with a charger so you would have to purchase one or use the one that came with your phone. Overall, I really like the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. It offers some nice features over the standard version for those who are more active outdoors, though it falls a bit short of a true "fitness" watch as it doesn't really offer guidance on how your body recovers from a workout like some other wearables, for example. Still, it seems so far to be a durable watch with some nice features for more casual athletes. It leans towards being more of a smartwatch with sports features than a fitness watch with smartwatch features. If the former description fits your lifestyle rather than the latter, the Galaxy Watch 5 is in my opinion the best Android smartwatch and is as such easy to recommend.
