This watch is amazing, I loved the Watch 4 and wasn’t sure it would be worth it to go to Watch 5. But it absolutely is! The battery life is SO much better. I had to turn off lots of features on my old one to keep the battery going. I can use all the fun features now. I use this not only for health including checking my blood pressure per my doctor. It I use the recording feature every day to help me remember things. I use it in my dance class to start my music. So many great reasons to have this watch. Love it! Thanks Samsung!

If features, connectivity, and (perhaps) looks were all that were required to make a superior watch and tracker, this would win most any competition. Let’s start with the last. The version of the watch that I tested had a 44mm face which when not in use was reflective piano black, matched with a matte black band. For those who are into a modern, minimalist look, this is a beauty. The watch has only 2 small right-side buttons, as most functions are controlled by sweeping the face in various directions such as up for apps. Slick. The watch arrives in an equally simple and fully recyclable box. Setup was relatively easy as was pairing with a Samsung Galaxy S21 phone. Once the pairing process starts it is virtually automatic as the user has only to answer a few questions about preferences. As for connectivity, the watch has LTE, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi features along with GPS. All connected easily. When I took a long walk, the watch surprised me with a chime and question: Did I want it to memorize my route. Not sure what other Easter Eggs it has in store for me, but I liked the surprise. For anyone familiar with recent Samsung devices, the icons and interface will feel comfortably familiar. (As I own several Samsung devices, I applaud the standardization of icons and features.) Dozens of organized (athletic, stylish, digital/analog) faces are available which are chosen through the phone app. Experimenting and customizing faces are quick and easy. When the watch is illuminated (by wrist movement, screen touch, or button) the display is vibrant and bright. With this larger face, the look is dazzling and impressive. The face responds nearly instantly to swipes or touch. Again, very impressive. However, all is not perfect. The provided watch band has no loops, so after fitting it to one’s wrist, the remaining “tail” has to be inserted under the main band. While this sounds like a minor issue (and with all of the above, I guess it is) I found this requirement awkward and inconvenient; see photo. Anyone with dexterity limitations (arthritic fingers?) will find this frustrating. The big and most negative issue is battery life. The large display and multiple connectivity options really take their toll. I wore the watch to sleep and put it in “bed mode” which seems to be a variation of airplane mode. I had 72% battery when I did this. When I awakened 7.5 hours later, I had lost literally 30% of battery life. While charging is easy (requires a Type C USB connect for the magnetic charger), I cannot imagine the battery lasting much more than 24 hours, especially with athletic activity. In sum, if you can be comfortable with the limited battery life and minor band issue, this could be the smart watch for you. I loved it, but was truly disappointed by the brief battery life.

This is going to sound like a negative review...but let me start by saying this is definitely an awesome device. In many ways the problems are limitations of current technology (battery size, etc). Price: This would be quite a different review had I not purchased this watch used (like new) at a steep discount (used like new for $206.99 when it was priced new w/ discount $359.99 new). For the reasons I detail below, this device is a great value at $207...but if I had paid full price, my disappointment would've increased exponentially after the first couple days usage. Bear that in mind). Other important things to note: 1. I am reviewing the unlocked 4G version, used on AT&T's network as well as wifi 2. This model has NO PHYSICAL BEZEL. Somehow I didn't catch that fact until it arrived...but I really miss that feature from prior Samsung (Gear S2 and Gear S3 models). The digital bezel just isn't anywhere near as easy or precise to use. Plus, the digital bezel needlessly takes up real-estate that could've been used for a larger screen. Not to mention that - speaking for people with oily fingers everywhere - having a way to interact with the device without ALWAYS touching the viewing area is kinda a necessary feature (otherwise...plan on investing in an endless supply of screen wipes). Pros: - It is truly a handsome device. I recently had dinner with 3 family members, all of whom have square Apple watches with the dial on the side. It was clear as day that the circular Samsung style just looks SO much better. Add a $20 black metal watchband on Amazon and it will actually improve one's look/style rather than detract...can't say that about Apple and many other smartwatches. - Large, Sharp, bright, vibrant display - Better app selection than older Tizen OS - Fast charging (1 hour empty to full with 25W Samsung Wall Outlet Adaptor) - 4g model capable of streaming video Cons: - Despite all the claims otherwise, battery life just still isn't where it needs to be for this device to be used fully. Sure it'll last 5 days...if you use zero features and use the settings to reduce it to a $300+ digital watch (when you can buy one of those for less than $10). Using any of the features or apps regularly, and you can expect to be charging this device once or twice per day at the very least. - Spotty text connection, and intermittent issues with connection with phone in general. Frankly, I wish Samsung would just go ahead and make these standalone devices and have a simple number forwarding setup...because the connection with the phone, which many apps require in order to work, is constantly breaking down. I've also had issues receiving text messages real time using both Samsung and Google's messaging app. Final verdict: This device is fun, useful, and leaps ahead of the last model I owned (I owned multiple Gear S2s and then a Gear S3 prior this)...but honestly, I really expected more considering it's been years since my last Samsung smartwatch and these are THE SAME ISSUES that plagued Samsung watches going back to the Gear S2. You buy a smartwatch (or I did at least) wanting a scaled-down basic smartphone you can wear on my wrist and leave my phone at home. I love this device...but it has just enough issues in the exact wrong areas to make me hesitate to rely on it for the express purpose for which I bought it (So manage your expectations on battery life, etc, and you'll likely be pleased).
