Amazing Watch with a Frustrating Learning Curve

I was attracted to this watch for 2 reasons. The first is the LTE. I had wanted the LTE version of an early version Galaxy watch but couldn't find one to buy so I got one without the LTE. I thought that it would be nice to not have to have my large expensive phone along as I exercised or walked about in today's crime ridden cities. Being a watch collector, I also avoid wearing an expensive looking watch in public as I travel, especially in the large cities. The second reason was the health measurements that this watch can take. I have enjoyed being able to wear this watch during my workouts without having to have my phone nearby. The watch seems to measure my exercise time and heart rate the same as the machines that I use. The only curious thing that has happened is that one day during an "other workout" The watch for some reason switched to "auto-pause" and measured my 20 minutes on that machine as 7.5 minutes. I'm not sure what triggered this. It has only happened the one time. I love the sleep monitoring and reporting. While sleeping with a watch on does wake me occasionally, I really like the sleep feedback the watch provides. I was diagnosed with mild sleep apnea a couple of years ago. I tried a CPAP and hated wearing it. The CPAP made me feel no better so I stopped using it. I understand that this watch isn't a substitute for a (actually another) medical sleep study, but it does show me how sound my sleep is as well as if my blood oxygen level has gotten low. A watch that has continuous oxygen monitoring, heart rate monitoring, BIA (body fat analysis), a telephone, EKG, stress (OK I'm clueless here), GPS... is truly amazing to me. I will say that with all the features packed into this small watch there is a huge learning curve and that after a short time with the watch, much of it remains unexplored. I have had a couple of frustrations with the watch. I tried and tried to set up the E-Sim to get LTE activated. The app led me around in circles. I finally gave up and went to Verizon. It took 3 people and an hour for them to figure it out. The number of menus and the depth of some of them can be a bit frustrating. When I click on the user's manual on the phone app it says that it is not available in my language or compatible with my operating system or browser. Much of what I have learned about the watch has been learned the hard way. The other thing that I have been surprised by is the amount of time some of the readings take (i.e. EKG, Oxygen...). The battery life is not great with everything turned on. In spite of my frustrations setting up and learning this watch I really do like it. This may sound silly but every time I answer a call on the watch, I get a silly grin remembering Dick Tracy.

    A More Pro Build Feel

The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is a solid evolution on the now long-time product. The smartwatch market has become more saturated than ever before, and new partnerships have emerged. One of them is Samsung and Google. Google is yet to produce a smartwatch, but they have been making and OS (Wear OS) for a while now. Samsung on the other hand is one of the biggest players in hardware for smartwatches and has some software experience with Tizen OS. Last year’s Galaxy Watch 4 had some Google flavors, but the partnership didn’t feel fully fleshed out. The 2022 line of Galaxy Watch 5’s marks the first product to feature the combined efforts of Google and Samsung from start to finish. Build/Software: If it’s a modern Samsung product it’s going to look and feel like it belongs at the top of the food chain. Nothing has changed here. This Pro model makes use of titanium which keeps it light and strong. Even if it looks a little chunky, it doesn’t feel like it. Both versions of the Galaxy Watch 5 uses sapphire, however this one uses an even stronger version of this sapphire display. On the Pro, the display sits within a rim which provides added protection. Let’s talk about this rim. On last year’s Watch 4 Classic, this rim was a rotating bezel. Now, the watch is fully touch. There is no rotating bezel. This is by far the most polarizing feature or lack thereof. There is a strong argument to be made that the rotating bezel was Galaxy Watches killer feature. It separated it from all other watches in the market. It feels like a step backwards. The software feels mostly unchanged. This makes me feel like most of the Google software help came in the form of behind-the-scenes software functions. For example, battery life has improved significantly. Part of this is probably due to better software optimization, not just a bump in battery size. The faster charging is incredible. Its stupid fast. Real world experience for me has been very, very good. I can’t envision a situation where this thing is ever dead. The feel of the new band design is also great. Its super easy to put on and take off, as well as adjusting the length. Samsung claims the sensors have been improved. This is in part to the design of the area that comes into contact with your wrist. I can’t prove or disprove this as I don’t have other wearables to compare it too. However, I haven’t gotten any crazy values like heart rate or steps. So, at least it must be consistent in its measurements. The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is a step up in build quality from not just the Galaxy Watch 4, but also the standard Galaxy Watch 5. If you strongly value build quality then the Pro is a nice option.

For the longest time I never though a Smartwatch was something I actually wanted and/ or needed. Well thats changed now after seeing all the cool things it can do. Theres not much in the box other than the watch so unboxing is rather simple. But once I saw and then felt the watch I could tell Samsung built this thing to last. The watch looks amazing. Yes its a lot larger than a standard watch but of course it has to be with all that is packed inside. The 45mm screen is the perfect size and all the info is so well laid out you can see everything you need easily. The titanium case has a raised lip to prevent scratches and screen damage. The unique sports band holds the watch in place well, and easily stays in place and on with even rigorous activity. The initial set up was very easy pairing it to my Galaxy S21+. Then its just a matter of installing the widgets and getting all the settings the way you want it. I was starting from scratch, but if you are upgrading you can restore data. I personally prefer the old school look of hours and minute hands. But there are plenty of other ways to personalize it to your taste. One of the coolest things I have found this useful for is when I am out on bike or scooter rides. Using the GPS on my watch is a lot more accurate on my scooter rides, and a lot easier on bike rides since I use to have to always pull out my phone to check things like calories burnt, distance, etc. Ive never trusted a $1000 phone with a plastic phone holder so I always keep my phone in my pocket. So being able to just glance over at my wrist for all the info I need including heart rate, etc. has been great. Answering calls, texts, and receiving notifications all work perfect as well. I was pleasantly surprised at the microphone and speakers quality. I was sure there would be issues, but I was able to hear and be heard with no issues at all. The improved 590mah battery in the 5 allows for a full day of heavy use and more. But I just do the same thing I do with my Galaxy S21+ and use the 25w charger to get both charged so they have full life at the start of each day. Like I said before this was something I didnt know I wanted or needed until I tried it. It has so many unique things it can do and makes a lot of what you can do with a phone easier with a glance at your wrist. I look forward to finding more cool things it can do to make things easier and more productive. If you are looking for a Smartwatch this is one you should not pass up. Much recommended!

The Samsung Galaxy Watch5 Pro is a great improvement over my previous Watch4. The Pro version has many features aimed at outdoor activities and is much more rugged and with longer battery life than the 4. Samsung ditched Bixby and added Google Assistant in it's place which makes this a much better and easier to use watch than the previous version. The Watch5 Pro is much bigger than my previous Watch4, but with this bigger size comes a longer lasting battery and a much more rugged watch body. I like all of the additional outdoor and health features that are added with this watch and it makes it easy to get outdoors and have some fun and be able to track your progress and keep track of your health. The larger display makes it much easier to write on the screen when texting or making notes and the speak to type seems to be work MUCH better than my previous Watch4. I have also had way less freezing and overall the Watch5 just seems faster and more responsive than my previous watch. I would highly recommend this to anyone that uses a Google phone and the tight integration with Samsung makes this an excellent choice for anyone using a Samsung phone.

Setting up the watch is pretty straightforward as long as you follow along. And it's not like you will ruin it by missing something. Setup is just that... setup... get it up and running. You can make adjustments at anytime. Somethings you can adjust on the watch, somethings you use your phone. Putting on the watch proved difficult for me and it was so hard to find how to do it online. The box includes a barely guide and it would not have been so hard to state, "flip the magnetic open and release the metal fold in order to open up the watch band" (and just show a picture with arrows). Simple. The frustration was very annoying. Once you figure that out you can basically set the band to your desired size by putting it on your wrist pulling or releasing some of the band, folding over the metal part and then flipping the magnetic piece closed. That magnetic piece locks your watch band where you want it to stay and then all you are doing is opening the fold to remove the watch and closing the fold when putting on the watch. Adjust until you get it where you want it. I knocked off one star because I can't quite get it the way I want it. I'm not a fan of the band. I prefer bands with holes. All of this extra stuff is just that... extra. Additionally, the watch is not uncomfortable, but it is not amazingly comfortable like a regular watch (I know it is not a regular watch). It sits up slightly above my wrist because that is the best setting I can adjust it to while still getting it on my wrist. It spins a bit away from where it is supposed to sit because of the way the whole face plate is made. It's bulky-ish. So I knocked off one star for this. I still where it. It's a great watch. This is a very nice watch in looks, features and all. It's big enough so you can see a lot on the face. If you don't like big face watches just get a smaller sized watch. It has the 2 buttons on the right side that can take you back. Most of the features of the watch, you reach by swiping in every which way, depending on where you are and what you are trying to do -- swipe up, down, left, right, swipe FROM bottom, swipe FROM top, etc. You can change the face of the watch and there are plenty of options and some options even have sub options. Some of the face options are setup to show certain app icons on the face. You can also customize the face to show certain app icons or other info. And if all else fails, a swipe will give you all your icons if you need a certain app. The face is very clear, you should have no problems seeing what you want to see. This smartwatch can do mostly anything. You can make and take calls, read and send texts... typical phone functions. It can focus on your health in so many ways -- if you exercise, run, walk, bike, checking your heart, etc. It is your coach, accountability partner and it lets you know how much of the exercise you are doing. These are things your phone can do and now you have it right there on your wrist. If you are new to smartwatches or new to this smartwatch, you just have to get used to the things/functions that matter to you and then you can use this watch to your advantage. I would definitely recommend this watch... just learn it and use it to your advantage (like I said earlier), and you will be happy. The slight comfort issue is not enough for me to say this watch is less than great. It is in fact a great watch in function. And I would recommend it.

I bought my first Samsung Galaxy Watch in 2019 and have loved it! It still works great but when I saw the 5 Pro, I had to upgrade! First, I will say that the battery is amazing! I know all batteries will lose life over time but I don't ever remember my other watch having this kind of life! I couldn't measure my sleep with the old watch because if I wore it all night, I would not have enough battery to wear it to work. This watch will go all night and only lose about 7% life! I have worn it for 2 days and it only went down to about 57%. I charged it this morning and about 10 hours later it still has 87%. I KNOW my old watch could not do that even when it was new! This watch will even take an ECG (heart rhythm). It clarifies that it will not detect a heart attack but if you need to monitor your heart regularly, this can give you peace of mind. It will send it to the Samsung Health Monitor app on your phone and gives you the option to send it to someone (such as a medical provider). There is also a hard fall detector. I am currently in a cast and not able to walk so my daughter is down as an emergency contact if I fall. That makes her feel a lot better! It is also truly waterproof so I can wear it in the shower and it would register a fall there as well. I love the sleep monitor. I am still collecting data but after several days, it will give you recommendations for better sleep. I can already see that I get very little deep sleep so it's no wonder I wake up still tired! The watch also keeps track of your O2 level during sleep so if you think you have apnea, this can help. Another cool feature is the ability to take a screen shot that automatically goes to your phone. I am still learning all the amazing things this watch can do! It is such an upgrade from my old Galaxy watch. The charger is a nice magnetic disc that connects to the back of the watch but the other end is a C connection. I don't have any wall plugs that accept a C connection. They are all USB connections. I will purchase a C wall plug which is not a big deal and I am able to charge it off my computer for the time being.

Ill start by saying Ive been a huge fan of samsung watches since the release of the 1st galaxy watch 46mm. That was my 2nd Samsung smart watch, my 1st was the galaxy watch active. My 2nd smartwatch purchase was the oddly named galaxy watch 3 , then I got the galaxy watch 4 classic. The upper style watch models were my favorite as they have the Samsung exclusive rotating bezel, which makes navigating through the watches display simple and quick. The bezel also makes the watch looks classy and feel high end. With the latest iteration, the watch 5 pro lte here.... Samsung for a reason decided to ditch the rotating bezel, and add a raised edge and a touch style bezel like the galaxy watch active models. Which in my opinion takes alot away from theyre top model pro watch. This pro model feels more like a sprt active model and less classy and high end like previous gen watches. Dont get me wrong mkst everything on this watch works fine still like Ecg, heart rate monitor, sp O2 and so on. This just feels lacking to me without the rotating bezel, lte on this watch 5 pro works well on T-mobile for me as does my older watch 2 active lte model i have as well. Regardless of this watches titanium body and sapphire glass, this watch doesnt look or feel high end. It looks and feels like a active model. I find myself going back to my watch 4 classic 46mm lte model over this, as the GW4 classic looks classier and has all the same features minus basically the temperature sensor, that zi couldnt get to work on my watch 5 pro. I dont find that the larger battery lasts any longer using lte and call and messaging notifications turned on and bluetooth, with wifi off and gps off as well. I still get roughly 2 days before needing to recharge this watch.

I've not worn a watch in decades so, of course, the watch I now choose to wear is possibly the biggest available. At first it was very obvious on my wrist but quickly blended into my day. I really like how it seamlessly interfaces with my Z Flip3. It provides more data than I believe I'll ever use but someone else may find that data invaluable. I have no problem with the touch-bezel, I feel it's another seal keeping contaminates out tho I feel tactile clicks would help control scrolling. There needs to be an accessible charging point every three days at least.
