A hit and a miss with Samsung

I had high hopes with this watch, and after extensive researching I took the leap. Having a multitude of other Samsung products, I assumed it would work seamless, and for the most part it did. What it lacked was the ability to work seamlessly with the other apps that I often use for fitness. As a watch, it was fine, with many different watchfaces, good battery life, and the call function was great, but everything else fell short. The major problem came less than a year and a half after owning it (four months after the warranty lapsed,) when the touchscreen failed to work, anymore. Despite being "waterproof up to x feet for 30 minutes," it could not withstand submersion into a bath while bathing my kids, every other day. When sent away for repair, I was told that it would cost $200 to repair the water damage; and unfortunately $500 is too much to waste on this watch. As a result, I am left with a small, but mildly attractive, electronic paper weight.

    The worst smart watch

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I purchased Samsung Gear S3 Frontier Smart Watch for USD 299.99. This is almost a useless pricey watch. (i) The battery lasts less than 24 hours even after all the optimization techniques applied from online (reduce brightness, use the simplest watch face, show the watch face only when I turn my wrist towards me, etc.) . (ii) As a result I use the watch during daytime and charge in the night. So, I cannot track my sleep ever. (iii) The watch will automatically detect activities such as walking, running, elliptical, cycling. It does not however detect stationary bikes. My friends with Fitbit and Apple watches can detect stationary bikes too. The more annoying issue is that even if the watch shows 60 minutes or 2 hours of activities it saves only 10 minutes of activity. It is widely reported issue online (https://us.community.samsung.com/t5/forums/v3_1/forumtopicpage/board-id/wearabletech/thread-id/28037/page/1). Fitbit with half the price can do much better. No charge for 4-5 days. Tracks all activities correctly. Apple watches can do the same. Samsung has a very poor customer service too. There is no Samsung center in my region with over a million population (Raleigh, NC and cities in Wake County). The calls will be routed to call centers in Asia and they will ask you to ship the watch. Overall in my experience it is a substandard watch with poor hardware and software. My understanding is the half priced Fitbit will do much better and also heard that they have great customer service.

NICE WATCH, BUT I WAS UNLUCKY

I used to love my watch when I first got it. But after about 6 months, the watch started doing things that didn't make sense. The watch's battery would start dying extremely fast. I sent it back to Samsung for repair. After it got sent back, the watch started to overheat on my wrist and when I put it to charge. I sent it back again to Samsung and I told them if I can have a brand new watch for safety. I didn't want the possibility of the watch to explode on my wrist. I also told them that I wanted my money back, and they told me that they didn't want to refund it or send me a new one, because they consider the watch doesn't need to be replaced for a new one. I love every Apple device. I have a bunch of Apple devices purchased. But I wanted to give Samsung a try, and now, I don't trust the company to give me a valuable watch. Because if anything happens, they don't want to resolve the issue. I'm doing this for safety. And Samsung's response was that the watches heated up, that it was normal.

Samsung does not stand behind the Gear

I had my Gear S3, read the manual, especially about Water Resistance. Samsung claims it is IP68-rated, which means it can be submerged in 1.5m of water for up to 30 minutes. I never had it submerged in 1.5 m (4.9 ft) of water for any longer than 1 minute. It stopped working after 6 months, and Samsung refused to warranty it. said I had it too deep too long.

App limitation, very slow in receiving notificatio

I wanted to give it a try because it looked nicer than the Huawei Watch 2. So I bought it. Based on my experience with the Huawei Watch, this watch did not meet my expectations. Because you CANNOT use Android Wear (only Samsung Gear), the number of apps you can have is limited; you can't say "ok, Google take me home". You have to download another map app, but this map app does not accept voice commands to stop the navigation if you wanted to. Also, I noticed that it took forever for me to get a message after I had received it on my phone. It seems like you can go through the menus, but you cannot go back to the previous screen, you would have to start all over again. I don't know if I couldn't figure out a way to increase the vibration, but I could barely feel the vibration when I got a message. I ended up returning it and getting the Huawei Watch 2.

Good phone, but limited by voice controls

    Posted .

I tried to use this with a Google Pixel XL. I was able to install all the required software and sync the watch to my phone. At this point notifications worked well as did the pre-installed apps. Then I went to look for new watch faces and additional apps. I was surprised at lack of quality apps and watch faces. The selection and quality of apps and watch faces in Samsung Gear store is pathetic. When I attempted to use the voice controls via the watch with the Pixel (ex. 'Send text to Joe Doe') the watch would only respond with "SMS service is unavailable". It appears this is an issue with some non-Samsung phones. Watch build quality is quite good with a bright and crisp screen. S-Voice is the feature that holds back this watch from being a serious contender to the Apple Watch. I caution buyers that have non-Samsung phones.

    Not a "SmartWatch" at all

Unless you use the phone based Samsung apps for everything, this watch will be useless to you. Want to get Text messages? Only if you use Samsung's messaging app. Want to get notifications from other apps? Only if they're made by Samsung. Play music??? Your only option, other than Samsung's is Spotify. Guess what? The Spotify app doesn't work and the Samsung reps at Best Buy will verify it... Do you like Pandora? Nope, no app for that. No apps for most anything..... Health tracking? Seems to work, but don't have a real need for it. Answer calls, yep that works. That's about the only good thing about the watch. For $350, please go elsewhere.

Samsung pay deletes stored cards! My last Samsung

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Buyers beware: Samsung pay randomly deletes credit cards stored in Samsung pay when you open app on the watch. There are multiple threads on forums about this with people using different phones. I have stock pixel xl. I contacted Samsung support about this issue and they were unhelpful telling me that 'because I have non-samsung phone they can not guarantee that it will work with Samsung pay and also that Samsung pay is not fully supported on Android 8.1". I explained the issue to the tech and basically his second answer was 'is there anything else I can help you with and thanks for using samsung'. Pathetic! Couple times I ended up being in store without wallet and looking at my watch saying "all cards were deleted". This is my last Samsung product! Google 'samsung pay deleted cards' and you will see how many people have the same issue.

Good watch but don't buy if you have an Iphone

I've had this watch for over 1 year. Great watch. Great features. It is what I needed: An all in one watch that I could use all time (for running and to wear at work). Unfortunately it constantly freezes and I've lost several times all information. I lost the last 8 months of my physical activity. It doesn't connect well with my iPhone so I cannot respond to texts or emails from my phone. If you have a Samsung phone please do buy it... It is great. If you have an iPhone, please do not bother... It's really frustrating.

No different than any other smartwatch

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The rotating bezel may be great for most, especially if you are a person that does not work out on a regular basis. But if you do work out regularly, somehow, some way, that bezel if going to interfere with your workout. It's going to make contact with something - equipment or you - that will have it changing whatever screen you may be on. For example, Endomondo. If not that, the fact that the watch is so pretty will keep you too pre-occupied with not damaging it or at least scratching it or the screen. And if you find battery to be a premium, don't buy it. It will drain quickly, especially keeping things on and at optimum levels. Seriously, why make a watch that you have to keep the screen on low, keep the screen off, and monitor several other things to preserve battery? Why make the watch if you have to utilize it at minimum levels on several fronts? And if you are all day the type of person that gets a ton of text, emails, and you use the unit to listen to music, respond to text and emails on it, and you answer calls on it, make certain you take the charger with you. LG Urbane was released with a 400 mah battery several years ago, and companies are still making these watches with very similar battery specs. It is purposeful in order to keep the consumer upgrading it as they do their phones. Ridiculous.

    USELESS FOR LONG DISTANCE RUNNING.

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Bought this watch for my dad for Christmas in 2017. He was impressed with everything it did, but loved the idea of using it to track his runs. He used it for many 26 mile runs and below and there was no issue. However in June 2018, he used it for a 100 mile run and it completely stopped working in the middle of his race. We sent it in to Samsung and they told us there was water damage and there was nothing they could do about it. This watch claims to be water resistant, but if you sweat, you might as well go a different route. Best buy and Samsung cannot help or return this watch, so we are out over 300 dollars and it was barely half a year. Very disappointed because I've never seen my dad so happy with a piece of technology before.

Samsung refused a warranty repair based on the watch was damaged. The back glass protector over the sensor came loose. The glue failed. Samsung said i damaged it. The damage could only have been caused by my perspiration. Why have an athletic watch that can't take a little sweat.

    Seriously less than 18 hours???

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Perhaps i just drew the short straw and my product was a dud, but i am getting less than 18 hours of charge from this unit, even after adjusting the brightness down to 2 and turning everything off. Then the best part is getting the run around from Geek Squad even though i purchased the protection plan. Started with online, told to call in, so i called in, then was told i had to go into the store WHAT STORE? NO ONE WITHIN 250 MILES HAS IT IN STOCK!!!! So now i get to drive to the store, wait in line to most likely get a refund because no one has a replacement unit, Thanks Best buy just what i need in the holiday season more wasted time. When it is working the watch is great, but with less than 18 hours of charge i cant even rely on the watch to wake me up as an alarm. Very poor experience with Both the Gear S3 and with Geek Squad Support.

    Battery issues after software update

Watch worked fine until software update then refuses to charge beyond 34%. Talking to Samsung support is useless. Best advise is to purchase an old fashion watch, or better yet, just use your phone. Not worth the issues.

Let down - Not compatible with my flagship ANDROID

I find it extremely disappointing that I am having to return my Samsung Gear S3 Frontier this week due to incompatibility with my Verizon Moto Z Force phone. Being a non-Samsung phone, many of the watch's key features, including the ability to send text messages and reply to emails, are not possible. Even after calling Samsung support, I was left without an answer. Please pass this message along to Samsung management -- there are threads all over the internet with customers upset about this same issue. Otherwise an unbelievably well thought out product.
