Wi-Fi vacuum requires hefty additional expense

The PowerBot is a so-so Robot vacuum that doesn't quite compete with those who are already entrenched in the market like Neato or iRobot. The robot has difficulty traversing transitions of varying heights. It seems to have relatively decent suction. But what really makes for a huge nervous factor is that this so-called WiFi vacuum requires another expensive component to make it function on wifi using a smartphone or tablet. It would be ideal if you could simply download the PowerBot app and get to scheduling, but instead it requires a whole other home automation system designed by Samsung to function in that way. Meanwhile that comes with a remote that lets you kind of driving around manually but it's very awkward and not easy to use. It will of course function automatically and you can set up schedules without having the Wi-Fi, but it's infinitely more difficult without.

This new robot vacuum employs some great new technologies to help it effective clean large spaces autonomously, but not all of the elements are working perfectly together just yet. Design: The unit itself is well constructed with a high quality design. The top of the units features a camera which attempts to map your rooms by looking up at the ceiling and button to easily eject the dustbin. The dustbin is bag-less and includes a washable / reusable filter. The roller brush is at the front of the unit and spans most of the width of the front end, effectively reaching the edges of the device. There is also an interesting "shutter" that can be extended when the unit is facing a wall or baseboard to pull debris back from the very edge of the wall into the vacuum. The only minor negative here is that the bot is tall enough that it didn't quite fit under some of our kitchen cabinet doors, reducing the value of the edge cleaning function. Setup: Setup is easy. Plug in and position the base station against a baseboard with about 1-2 ft of room either side and connect the vacuum to the dock to charge. The device can be connected to your home Wifi network using the free Samsung Smart Home app and following some quick and easy directions. Once connected, the bot can be controlled from your smartphone and can pull down software updates over the internet. Initial and subsequent charges take 2+ hours, so not the fastest charging battery out there. Samsung also includes an infrared remote which requires no setup (other than installing the included AAA batteries) and allows you to steer or otherwise command the robot. Performance: There are two primary cleaning modes: spot clean (which does expanding concentric circles from the unit's current location) and automatic, which attempts to automatically clean one entire level of the house (apparently boundary markers are available separately). The spot cleaning mode worked fine for small cleanup jobs. Suction performance is excellent, and the device did a great job cleaning up spilled powder, cat hair, and anything in between. The rollers do a good job of getting pet hair out of shallow fiber carpet. The unit also automatically adjusts suction based on the type of surface (higher for carpet and lower for hard floors). Two settings are available, but I found the "normal" setting to be totally adequate and very quiet (at least as robot vacs go). Where this device stumbles is in navigation. In theory, it will map your floor, navigate around obstacles, and come back to cover missed areas, moving from room to room until finished. It does successfully return to base after cleaning, so definitely maintains a good sense of location awareness. That said, I've run into several issues: 1. The unit often stumbles in trying to get up onto rugs when cleaning a hard floor. Sometimes it manages, sometimes it gives up and turns around. 2. When one side of the device hits an obstacle, it will sometimes spin around as the wheels keep turning and the free side rotates. It does appear to try to keep track of how much it turned, but its not always successful, and sometimes it will end up no longer cleaning in parallel lines as a result. 3. Sometimes when it misses an area (perhaps because of an obstacle), it won't go back to that area later even though it is accessible from a different direction. As a result, it does not necessarily cover your entire floor. I observed it miss several sections when watching how the navigation works. 4. It gets stuck too easily as it backs into things that might lift the rear wheels. Think certain kinds of chair or table legs, music stands, etc. 5. The brush wraps around even relatively short tassels on the edges of rugs, including some that didn't trip up other robots we've tried. This means those rugs need to be taken off the floor before vacuuming. Of the 3-4 times I've tried so far to have it clean in fully autonomous mode, it has only managed to complete the process once, each of the other times getting stuck with one of the items mentioned above. I think the hardware is pretty good, but the navigation software needs more work to better tolerate these different situations. The good news is that the software is fully upgradeable, so hopefully we'll see improvements over time. The battery provides a solid 1.5 - 2 hour run time, so in theory the unit could clean quite a large area if the navigation works correctly. I really hoped I'd love this bot better, but the navigation issues are really unfortunate. It's still useful and will hopefully improve with time. If you have a relative simple layout in your home and few rugs / other obstacles, this device would probably do a great job, especially since the actual cleaning power is exemplary. If you have a lot of floor to carpet transitions, complex room geometry, and/or other obstacles, this unit is probably not the best choice. Recommended with reservations.

I purchased the Powerbot R7040 vacuum thinking it would be a nice to have for my automated home, but have to come really appreciate its efficiency. It is not perfect by any means, but I believe it is one of the best models out there. It is a nice balance between cost and capabilities. I have a large upstairs with transitions between hardwood floors, and carpets, and carpets on hardwood floors and carpets on carpets. I have two animals running around and lots of furniture in the way. I schedule it to clean each day around noon, when no one is home and come home to empty out the dust bin of all the dog and cat hair that collect there. There was a bit of a learning curve and some frustration early on, when I was coming home to find it under a chair (it managed to get under the chair, but could not find its way out) or when it wedged itself under the railing of a drop off. But I have found a couple of simple ways to keep it on task and focused on its primary job. I watched it go under the chair and decided that the fabric that covers the chair and extends to the ground was a bit high, and thus it saw its way under the chair, but then it went up on the carpet once it was there and then could not find a way to exit. I solved this issue by placing a shoe, hidden under the edge of the chair, visible to no one but the Powerbot. This solved that issue. The issue with it getting caught under the railing was due to the railing being lower to the ground in one spot. I fixed this by setting a lamp in that spot, and now it does not get caught anywhere. I appreciate that with a little work and direction, I can make it run daily and keep my floors clean of the worst of the dog and cat hair. It is always nice to see the daily reports and understand where it ran that day, and helps me to make small tweaks to things to get it to run as I desire. I am always amazed at how much dirt it picks up on a daily basis. I really appreciate how well designed it is.

I had a Roomba once but for a very short time and noticed the suction was like a toy so I returned it. the Samsung comes along with powerful suction and unit navigates fairly well with acceptable noise level. However, I found it very difficult to open and empty the top dust bin - (not a dyson like design where it's one click on regular vacuums). Also seems the vacuum will get easily stuck on any kind of rug with loose fabrics (or whatever you call it?) have not tried the wifi or remote control features yet, so will have to evaluate that later. Cat seems to be perplexed by this humming machine that interrupts her sleep

The samsung powerbot r7040 is an excellent robot vacuum. After letting it fully charge, it was entertaining to watch it get right to work and how it overcame the various obstacles in my home. If it senses an object, it first slows down and then turns away cleaning as close to it as it can. When it reaches an edge or a wall, itll continue to clean all the way to the corner! If the powerbot reaches the edge of the first stair step, itll turn around and not tumble it's way down a flight of stairs to its doom. This is one smart, powerful robo-vacuum and will not disappoint. It has 2 different suction power for you to choose from along with 2 different cleaning patterns. The auto option will allow the vacuum to clean in a zig-zag like pattern and if you turn the "repeat" option on, it will clean in a grid-like pattern. The vacuum comes with a remote and is also voice activated by amazon Alexa. The dust bin is easy to empty and the cleanin brush is very easy to troubleshoot should ajything ever get stuck. The only complaints I really have is that sometimes it would have trouble finding it's way back to the charger and often die mid way. I'm not sure if mine is defective or if others have ran in to the same problem. My second complaint is that the app can be better. I wish the powerbot would map out my home after a complete cycle and then allow me to remotely select which area of my house I want cleaned. I also wish the battery would last longer. I had trouble getting my powerbot to start cleaning right where it left off when the battery died. All in all, I would say that samsung knows what doiit's doing, just a few more tweaks and bam, we have one mean cleaning machine! This product was given to me at a discounted price in exchange for my honest review.

    Overall Great RoboVac

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The Powerbot has worked great for us and seems to be on par with others in its class. I love the intelligent mapping so that it doesn't go over the same spot a million times like my previous dumber robovac did. The suction power seems very adequate. We have all hard floors and have only used the normal suction power - it gets so much dust and pet hair, it's hard to believe. I especially love the easy of removing the dust bin and cleaning it out as well as the fact that I can wash the filter so it's really simple to keep the vacuum working at its optimal level. Running the vacuum from the vac itself or the remote is simple and connecting it to Wifi and then the Smartthings app wasn't too hard either. Unfortunately, we have not been able to use it with Alexa. This is due to Alexa only being able to connect to one smarthings account. We already linked our smarthings hub to Alexa which is in my account. However, we set this Powerbot up in my spouse's account and we can't link his account also to Alexa and so we can't use it with Alexa. I was also disappointed that for this price point and since it is Wifi enabled, you can only set it up to come on at the same time every day and not create a more specific schedule like having it come on at different times on different days of the week or not at all on others. The noise level is moderate - it's not quiet enough that I would want it running while watching a movie, but not so loud that it bothers us if we're just doing stuff around the house. Overall it does what it's meant to do very well and is great at getting right up against the walls and making sure ever spot gets vacuumed. It keeps our floors so much cleaner than they would be without it!

    The Bot with Power

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I was an oblivious consumer prior to coming across the POWERbot. I would consider myself a somewhat savvy person when it comes to seeing what is new on the market as far as technology goes. When it comes to robots and cleaning I am clueless. I would be a skeptic when it comes to something that can manage to clean all my flooring quietly and efficiently. You mean to tell me this whole time I could have done things with such ease and save myself from hours of cleaning? Yes, that was me until the POWERbot came into my life. When my product arrived it was neatly and tightly packaged. There was no extra movement in the box or damage. The POWERbot came with a sleek modern outer shell with a small interior to gather what particles and dust that may be on my flooring. Upon turning it on it was quiet and moved across the floor gracefully without any snags. The best part was being able to turn it on and now have to worry about anything else. It did the job for me and left my floors spotless. Emptying the canister was a simple pull and snap. Keeping it clean was just as simple. This product is one that I appreciate because I do have children with special needs. They are not fond of loud noises and I am not always available during the day to clean my house. I can put it on in the evening without waking my children or the neighbors. This genius contraption was created for mothers like me who have two fill time jobs and children who need to have extra care. Most days I feel tired and drained. I don't break a sweat watching a bot do the labor for me not do I feel guilty. I don't have that overwhelming feeling of being defeated by the pile up of chores I didn't manage to tend to. This product is made of durable material that can withstand conditions that may seem more rough. When it glides around the house it does not try to pick up items that are larger than it can carry or pull in. It is light weight and the size of it makes it easier to store away if I choose to. I normally keep it out in a corner. The battery life is impeccable and I don't have to worry about extra juice for my bot. I must mention the surface is not easily scratched and withholds a little ding if it runs into a hiccup somewhere along cleaning. I think the POWERbot is suitable for those who don't like to clean, have a busy schedule, may have physical disabilities that limit them or just an average person who wants to rid the burden of doing the floors. This product is worth the dollars the spent.

I have 2 of the POWERbot 7040’s now. I bought a house a few months ago with 2 levels…..so of course I needed another POWERbot! I have had the 1st one for probably 7 or 8 months now and it still cleans like it did day 1. They are super easy to set up (and rename for better smart controls if you want to haha). My older one (named Alfred) cleans my 1st floor. It has no problems navigating around room to room, moving from tile to hardwood to carpet to rugs…literally has yet to get stuck anywhere! The newer one (Igor) is in the basement, which is all carpet, and also has had no problems moving around room to room. Whenever they run low on power they automatically return to charge, then pick up where they left off, which is key when there is a lot of carpet. It detects when it is on carpet and turns up the suction, so it goes through power a bit faster than on hardwood. The extra large wheels really help it push around on the carpet as well, but it really comes into play when transitioning from hardwood to carpet, or anything along those lines. I also love the fact that it has a flat front and the “Edge Clean Master” function. Way better at cleaning along the walls than other vacuums! As far as the rest of it goes, control is super easy with both the remote AND the app, but I mostly just let them auto clean. It was easy to integrate both of them with the Google Assistant, so now when I want them to run I just say “Hey Google, let’s clean up,” and off go Alfred and Igor to clean their respective floors! I run each of them pretty much daily, which is huge for dust control in the house, and even though they run everyday I am still amazed every day when I see how much they picked up. I had the pleasure of reviewing this product as part of the Insiders program, and I’m glad I could because these vacuums are awesome!!!

This is a good vacuum and will serve many well, but not quite everyone. I have a cluttered house, and for those who may also have a cluttered house, I don't think this is a great choice. Why? It bangs into things and gets stuck on different area carpets. Plus, it is a fairly large unit that requires valuable wall space near an electrical outlet for docking/charging. Okay, that out of the way, I must say I like this unit. Besides the sturdy build of the unit, and the features you would expect for something like this, it is a pure engineering opus. It is so amazing, to see that something this advanced can be purchased to clean your home. The dust bin is smaller, but please realize for some like me, this is not for doing your primary vacuuming (such as in my house, I have a long haired dog), but a supplemental vacuum, to get the finer details of what I miss when I do my daily vacuuming. It is very good at getting up dust and all that hair in places I don't always vacuum well, like under furniture, or in corners. This does that and it does it well. My problem with a cluttered house, is that the vacuum has trouble trying to get around all of the non-stop obstacles. It is a smaller house, with lots of furniture, area rugs, and other things laying around. I came down and found my dog's water bowl in the hallway, and the plastic tray it sits on was in the living room - it was getting pushed around by the vacuum. I don't blame the vacuum, if it were to stop at every obstacle, it would get nothing done. The problem is that it bullies this stuff around a bit too hard and while necessary, causes things to get moved around when I wish it would not. The vacuum is powerful for cleaning and does a great job. The app is sometimes frustrating, and I'm sure I'm not alone in my belief of this, but you don't need it to run this unit. The unit remote works great and is all you really need to control it. The cleaning modes are enough, and you can schedule when the unit will start. You can wash the filter that is at the dust bin. And you can just press and remove the dust bin without opening a cover or doing anything difficult. The wheels are cool, they allow the vacuum to climb up onto the many different area rugs I have laying around, but a few of the rugs are a bit of challenge. If you have a less cluttered home, it will be a great choice for you. If you have a big hairy dog, and you vacuum before this robot gets started, you won't be disappointed. If you have a cluttered house, a hairy dog, and expect this to do everything without challenges, you might be disappointed. It isn't this units fault, others have failed in my house too. But I can appreciate the unit, the much thought out features, and frankly the follow up to my daily vacuum routine providing a cleaner end result. I've gotten lazy and miss stuff, this helps me to get those details like corners, under furniture, etc. One of the most helpful feature, and this is a first I can recall, is that when it gets tired and needs a charge, it returns to the dock and recharges, then goes back to where it came from. That is helpful to let the cleaning process complete - and again, a first from the units I've tested.
