Bought the R1 speaker with very low expectations but found that the sound was excellent and the speaker paired easily via bluetooth with my phone. We use this one speaker in our large living room and it gets pretty loud for a such a small size. As noted in other reviews, Samsung needs to work on their phone ap, it works but is not very user friendly. In summary, we loved this speaker so much we went back and bought another one!

This speaker is not compatible with a Kindle Fire, nor my LG Smartphone. I also couldn't synchronize the speaker with my HP laptop. This speaker is now considered utterly useless to me!

I was mislead from the reviews of this product. I was not aware this was not a portable speaker. The audio was great however it required being plugged in at all times and therefore it was not what I needed.

This did not stay connected to our wireless setup on many occasions. Sound and volume was inconsistent. It provides surround sound, not constant sound so most of the time it sat there silent. App is garbage.

Even this product is not available anymore, for me it just gave me use for very little time, two months for the most. It was working fine and as described on the box. After moving houses and after several initial setup, reset, delete app, reinstall app, reset modem, remove and reinstall router, restart home internet, re do all of this process several times, nothing seemed to work, they were sent (2) to Geeksquad for repair just to confirm a week later that they were no dimmed to be fix thus categorized the as a junk. I won’t recommend this product.

Setup and application:
I purchased the Samsung R1 and larger R5 speakers mostly due to the connectivity options on multiple devices (android tablet, windows phone, and a PC). Where many of the competitors limit the bells and whistles to iphones (iOS) users. It was by far the easiest and most flexible setup and extremely easy to link speakers and devices. It will switch from Bluetooth, wifi, and TV streaming devices seamlessly. The Samsung multiroom app does need some polishing as its pretty crude and doesn’t link to streaming sources or mp3 playlist sources intuitively. It works and the simplicity is nice but for a company like Samsung it’s not something they should be proud of. I would have given it 5 stars if they had a windows app that would allow a PC and windows phone to use wifi instead of Bluetooth.
Performance:
Given the price point of the R1-R7 speakers I’m happy with their sound and functionality. They don’t have the volume or sound quality of their upper end competitors I tested but all of those had limitations on connectivity that didn’t fit my application. The R1 lacks middle range tones like most small speakers using a speaker chamber enclosure to enhance or mimic low end tones. They excel at their directional sound ability where the music sounds the same no matter where its placed and fills the room with a single unit. For large rooms I’d highly recommend the larger R5/R7 units as the R1 sounded small and underpowered in my kitchen and living areas. The wifi source stream far exceeds the quality and range limiting Bluetooth mode but smart devices with NFC on helps somewhat. I believe some of the reviews saying the sound quality is poor is due to them using Bluetooth only mode which doesn’t have the performance or capabilities of wifi. After I tested the R1 I returned to purchase the larger R5 for my other large rooms.

I love Samsung products. Most of my electronics are Samsung, so I had great expectations for the R1 speaker, but was sadly disappointed. First, the app is terrible, probably the worst I've used. It doesnt detect the speaker no matter what distance its from it. Tried about 10 times. One time it said it was connected, but it wasnt, and the speaker did not show on the drop down menu to select. I deleted the app and conected using Bluetooth only, which was quick and easy. The speaker sounded great, no doubt about that, but there are no options to control the sound other than volume. There is no power button, no way to select the style of music you're listening to, or a manual equalizer. It doesn't even have bass and trebel controls. Its possible that the app has those options, but I wouldn't know since it doesnt pick up the speaker. For me, probably the worst thing is that the speaker must be plugged in at all times. It does not have a rechargeable battery so you are unable to take it with you anywhere, unless you unplug it then plug it back in and reconnect to it. That's pretty much the deal breaker for me. I will be returning it tomorrow.

The overall sound was not great. I paired it with my Samsung TV thinking it would boost the sound a bit. It was actually equal to or worse than the sound coming out of the TV itself.

I really tried to make these work. I wanted them to work. They had great sound quality. Incredible sound quality. But the interface from Samsung was horrible. It crashed randomly, dropped and picked speakers back up whenever it wanted.
This was tried on four different phones, both iPhone and Android, over a year and a half before I gave up.
Do yourself a favor and start with Sonos - more money up front but so much easier to use.
