Presentation The sound bar comes in a box just big enough to protect the unit and house the accessories – remote, batteries, cables, mounting h/w and instructions – with no waste and easy to store away somewhere in case you have to protect it in the event of a future move. Upon unpacking the unit, It looks and feels solid, with a good amount of heft for its size. Initial Setup Setup was simple and straight forward. You have a world of choices to connect the Samsung HW-MS650, 3-channel hi-res soundbar – HDMI, toslink (optical) digital transport, Bluetooth and wifi. Hooking up any of the cables is as simple as would be expected and using either of the two wireless modes of operation were quick & painless as well. Once the unit is fired up, you simply go through a few button presses on the remote to change the sound field preferences and to change how crisp things sound and the intensity of the low end. The remote is diminutive yet feels solidly constructed. I personally like the button layout and intuitive design. So much better than most of the remote designs I’ve come across on similar types of product. The ‘bar’ supports HDMI-CEC which is Greek for intelligent device control across HDMI cables. If your television. sat set-top box or cable set-box has it – use it! Internal Configuration This soundbar supports Dolby Digital 5.1 nd DTS 2 channel sound. To maximize the experience it is recommended to keep the unit in the Dolby mode of operation although you will only get a 3 channel + sub sound field. You can combine this unit with additional wireless components to achieve 5 channels but in practical terms, I believe most purchasers are going this route to begin with because they are space constrained and/or want a unified sound arrangement from a single slab of tech. In this respect, the HW-MS650 delivers. One other thing worth noting is that his soundbar can be used as a “pass-through” device. Simply feed an HDMI cable and power in and then route both a HDMI cable and power bridge cord out to your television and you’ve essentially assembled a full fidelity and unified sound addition to any flat panel that only came with low quality, low gain speakers. Performance The unit comes with 5 processing modes for the sound: Standard Music Clear Voice Sports and Movie There is an internal subwoofer driver that is the real gem in this product. No matter what listening level we tried out, the mid-range and bass fullness was spectacular. Quite honestly, I was completely shocked how good this soundbar performed with a variety of movie genres and live television events. The treble and bass controls were smooth and well-stepped, never producing an overly bright or bass-bottom distorted sound field. There isn’t lot of granularity to the two individual settings but this level of control still produces remarkable results. On the flip side, this soundbar is very good as a standalone wireless audio component. For those consumers that are looking for something a bit punchier than the typical dedicated Bluetooth/wifi speaker for any room in the house – the HW-MS650 is excellent option. Its unobtrusive design will play nice with most room decors as long as one has the shelf space or platform to place the unit. I suppose you could just as easily wall mount this bar wherever you'd like - all by itself. I have a similar priced “full sized” wireless speaker from Polk, and the HW-MS650 produces a fuller sound field and does so at much louder levels – thanks to the built in subwoofer. In a nutshell, anyone looking for a powerful wireless speaker that is capable of filling even large rooms with high fidelity sound should give this beast a try. Summary Fairly priced, solidly built and flexible in its application – The HW-MS650 is strong contender in the soundbar space. Pros: Ease of setup. Provides a massive amount of sound that can be tailored to personal preference. Small, elegant profile with an unobtrusive set of displays that do dark when not needed. A diminutive yet complete handheld remote that gives you full control of the soundbar from across the room. Pretty much comes with everything you’ll need to marry it with a big screen display panel. HDMI-CEC intelligence. Nice touch! Cons: Limited surround simulation but still surprising good for its size and the number of sound fields are appropriate for its physical limitations. Not really a con but really a complaint either. Limited treble and bass controls; mid-range control would have been a nice addition – but what is presented in terms of control does a dog-gone nice job.

      Jerry,

Thank you for purchasing this Samsung HW-MS650 Soundbar System.
I am sorry to hear that you were not completely satisfied with its low volume.

Please check the connection between the Soundbar and other source devices, and try the following tips that may help improve the volume level.
      1. If the Soundbar is connected to a TV thru HDMI, make sure to use the HDMI-ARC jack on the TV and select “External speakers” as the TV sound output.
      2. Check the audio output format sent to the Soundbar. Typical options are PCM, Dolby Digital, and Bitstream. Select the option that optimizes the sound from your source.
      3. Change the SOUND MODE on the Soundbar using the Soundbar’s remote. Choices are STANDARD, MUSIC, CLEAR VOICE, SPORTS, or MOVIE. Select the appropriate mode for the individual room acoustics.
      4. Turn on Dynamic Range Control. This is done by pressing and holding the SOUND MODE button on the remote control while the Soundbar is in standby mode.

I hope these tips help to enhance your audio enjoyment.

I have way too much good to say for this sound bar and only one gripe. I will make this review simple to read. The Goods: 1. Great Packaging 2. Powers on your Samsung TV and works fantastic with the controller 3. Sound is amazing for not having a Subwoofer. I have a $1600 sound bar from a top brand that has a Subwoofer and this bar is better. I must be honest, it's not loud bass but I am now really disappointed in my top dollar system. Highs are much better, mids are not as muffled and the overall sound is much clearer. Samsung hit it out of the park on this sound bar. 4. Adjustable bass right on the remote and the volume button with the integrated mute is a great touch. 5. The different sound fields work and do it well, gives the choice of how you want it to project the sound, great for video games. 6. Color of the unit matches the rest of my Samsung equipment great and looks good on my entertainment center. 7. Bluetooth works perfect and is very clear audio. 8. Expandable sound. I have not used this yet, but the ability to add a Subwoofer and rear speakers is something I may just do, and throw the more expensive unit to the way side. 9. Price is great for the sound, the initial amount looks high, but I know it's worth it. 10. The Samsung app works great with this unit ony Android devices, I do not have an Apple device to test. So overall, the goods just make this a top choice and how loud it can get makes it a great purchase for the movie buff in any size room. Now for the not so good: 1: The cable input area is small and makes it difficult to plug in multiple cables and route them. It is possible to have all cables, it just takes a minute to route them perfect. 2: Main Gripe- The mounting for the wall, it is not adjustable at all, so houses with older stud placing will make this impossible to install without big holes and wall anchors, I don't like this at all. Also, with the price you pay, it should come with brackets to mount this under a TV on a wall system. So there you have it, many goods, little bad for me. I hope you enjoy your purchase and make sure to look at this sound bar, it should be a top choice.

Installation was fairly simple by connecting our tv to the supplied optical cord that came with the sound bar. Sound bar also offers the option to connect via Wi-Fi. It was simple to connect our phone via the Bluetooth option to play music over the sound bar also. The remote control that comes with the sound bar has a nice look, very slim and sleek. Note that volume and bass controls on remote are kind of a toggle style of button that one needs to push up and down to control. We adjusted the sound to increase the bass level to its highest setting. Music over Bluetooth had a very good sound. As far as sound for tv viewing Smart Mode seemed to deliver the best quality. If you want a sound bar that has a nice look and won't require the space for a subwoofer then this is a nice choice. I believe you do sacrifice some sound quality without the subwoofer so just something to consider.

I already have a Samsung soundbar at home which includes a dedicated wireless subwoofer that is independently powered. I was excited to see if this HW-MS650 soundbar could do away with a dedicated subwoofer successfully. First off this soundbar is big and weighs in around 15 lbs. My experience with speakers is that quality speakers tend to weigh more than low quality ones. This soundbar definitely sounds very good. Distortion is very low and midrange audio is excellent. Audio filled our bedroom with rich sound. While the bass is decent for a soundbar only setup I expected more at this price point. My Samsung soundbar and wireless combo costs less. I do not recommend this soundbar at this price point. We are simply not at the point yet where a soundbar only can replicate bass of a seprate dedicated powered subwoofer. Soundbar design and audio quality is great.

      Raul,

Thank you for your review of the Samsung Audio Soundbar. I am sorry to hear that you are not satisfied with the bass sound quality.

Please know that the HW-MS650 has a dedicated BASS level control on your remote.

The button is labeled “BASS”, and is located to the right of the Volume button.
Push the button up or down to adjust the bass volume within -6 to +6 range.
To set the bass volume level to 0, simply press the button again.

I hope this helps to resolve the issues. For further assistance, please contact Samsung Customer Support toll-free at 1-800-SAMSUNG and a representative will gladly help you.

Pros -Clear sound -Multiple sound modes -Lots of inputs and connectivity -Good volume with fine adjustaments -Comes with wall mount hardware Cons -Expensive -Doesn't function as a receiver -Bass still somewhat lacking -Disappointing surround effect -Audio quality not very adjustable -Remote programming didn't work ( for me ) Overall the sound quality of the speaker is quite good. Very clear and crisp and the different sound modes help tune it to your tastes and the media you're watching. The bar itself has lots of connectivity options including HDMI in and out, fiber optic, Bluetooth, and even Wi-Fi for expanding it with rear surround speakers. As a bonus, the bar comes with wall mounting hardware for those getting a soundbar specifically because they don't have a stand or shelves for bigger satellite speakers.I especially like the volume control as the volume increments are small and you can fine tune it to the exact level you want. The downside is you don't get the same fine tuning capabilities in adjusting the sound tone and curve. You don't get an equalizer or anything like that. The sound modes are static. Apart from basic treble and bass levels ( which awkwardly aren't even in the same menu ) all you get are audio sync delay controls. This is okay for most folks, but not for people who want to fine tune their sound system. The bar is also supposed to allow third party TV remotes to control its volume so you don't have to fiddle with another remote. However it didn't give me that option ( even when following the instruction booklet ). If you already have a programmable/universal remote, this won't be a problem for you. The virtualized surround sound is also fairly disappointing The biggest problem here is the lack of a dedicated sub-woofer. The soundbar claims to have one built-in, and overall bass level is okay, but size really matters in bass drivers and lacking a separate sub means you don't quite get that punch. Soundbars are great for people who want better audio than integrated TV speakers, but don't have the money or space for larger satellites and surround setups. Expensive, premium soundbars however don't make a lot of sense, or are at best a niche product. You can get very good soundbars, even with separate subs, for $250 or less. Spending twice as much here isn't getting you double the sound quality or twice the functionality. If the soundbar had two or three HDMI inputs instead of only one, then it could act as a receiver by letting you hook your satellite/cable box, game console, and Blu-ray player all to your TV. However as is, you either need to juggle inputs on both it and your TV every time you switch devices, or it needs to be hooked to a receiver. And if you've already got a receiver, why spend $450 on a soundbar alone? For that money you can get a center speaker, two floor speakers, and a sub-woofer to al power off your receiver, and which will give you better and stronger sound than this bar can do. In total, the value simply isn't there. It's a quality product, no doubt about that, and the sound is quite good for what it is. But you can get the same sound or less money with cheaper sound bars, and much better sound for the same money if you get dedicated speakers.
