The build quality and sound is top notch. Out of the box it feels quite heavy and well made. I'm not sure if it just an error with my packaging, but there were no instructions. There were multiple mounting hardware types and nothing telling me what they were for. At least I would I have thought there would have been a reference to a website where I could find guidance. I googled the model number and found the on-line instruction manual on Samsung's website. It was easy to setup and configure once I had the instructions. Be advised that once the feet are screwed in the unit sets up rather high, and the speaker is thick as well. It covers the bottom 1/2 inch of my screen, but does not bother me. Please keep this in mind if you are mounting below the screen. Overall I'm well pleased and recommend this as a very good addition to a home entertainment system.

Good Sound, Nice Bass, Clear, Visual Display

The first thing that caught my eye about this SoundBar was not the sound but the visual display on it (it displays volume, mode, settings, etc. - right on the speaker itself). The sound is clear and crisp - even at max volume, and the bass is good. When it was loud it didn't "sound loud" (it didn't sound bad). I primarily tested it with the included optical cable with a Samsung 6-Series 4K TV (noted because this is a 6-Series speaker) but I also tested with a 2015 Samsung 1080P TV. Surprisingly, in some ways the older TV worked better with this speaker (for example, volume control worked from tv remote for optical audio input, on the 6-series that only worked in wi-fi direct mode, which i guess was similar quality; but the tv itself was full of 'software bugs' with wifi direct it seems, unrelated to the speaker, which made this frustrating to use in this mode). I was more than impressed with the sound quality of this speaker. This speaker is definitely a nice addition to the home theater.

Decent sound bar with some drawbacks

Out of the package this is a very good-looking sound bar. It is very large compared to other sound bars I've seen. It does look sleek and has a cool, dark color. Samsung does their usual superb job with packaging--it's all very secure and protected. The first thing I noticed is that it's VERY heavy for a sound bar. I'm not sure if this is due to the built-in sub-woofer, but it's probably the heaviest sound bar I've used. This could be an issue if you want to try and attach it to the bottom of a TV set. Due to the size and weight you'd want to have it attached to a large TV (55" at the smallest I'd say) or it will be noticeably longer than your set. You will also want to have a secure mount to account for the extra weight. Personally I don't think I'd trust it attached to the bottom of a TV and would probably just try to mount it on a wall below the TV. The main HDMI connections are easy enough, unfortunately the digital optical connector is not as easy. It's great that it comes with the optical wire, but the design of the connection is recessed and at an angle--I could not get the connector to stay in place after trying for 15 very frustrating minutes. The sound quality is crystal clear and very good with highs, but the lack of a sub-woofer is noticeable, particularly during action sequences. You simply can't get the low range that a separate sub-woofer provides. There are several different sound modes with noticeable differences between them.. The "surround" mode is surprisingly effective even though it's all contained in one unit. The stereo sound is nice when streaming music, though it tends to be directional and sound much better directly in front of the unit rather than at other spots in the room. It would be difficult to use this as anything other than supporting TV sound, so it's not a great substitute for an entire stereo system. The remote is typical of Samsung's new design. I like it, but I'm already used to the "toggle" idea thanks to owning a Samsung TV. It can be confusing for first-time users. The TV integrates amazingly well with current Samsung products. It found my TV right away through my wi-fi system, so that was pretty cool. Other wi-fi connections are more advanced than that. Like everything now there wasn't really a manual, so you'll likely find yourself scouring the internet for documentation on how to connect and more advanced options. Samsung's site is great for this, but it can be frustrating to have to research how to use your product rather than having good enough documentation included. Overall this is a very good product from Samsung, and will do what you want it to do, particularly if you are pairing it with a Samsung TV. If you aren't pressed for space and want a deeper sound I would have to recommend a system with a dedicated sub-woofer over this speaker.

Just got the Samsung 650 after purchasing and returning the new JBL 3.1. No mids in the JBL. This bar is much better. Have it connected to a Samsung 75’ 4K tv. Others have stated this bar doesn’t get loud enough. I am kind of having the same issue. I only have that issue when I use “Smart Hub”, YouTube for example. I can max the bar out at 100 and it isn’t very loud. Anybody know how to fix this or why this is happening?? I unplugged the tv, didn’t work. Called Samsung, they weren’t much help. Through the tv (cable) it’s fine, just not with apps. This bar sounds very balanced. Really nice mids and the bass adds enough rumble. Definitely would recommend.

This soundbar has amazing sound quality! I would have given it a 5 star review but the optical cord that it came with to connect it to the TV was impossible to use. It did not fit in the port on the sound bar at all, so I had to connect it through an aux cable from another device. Also, the sound bar itself is extremely heavy and bulky, making it very awkward to place on an entertainment center with the TV. However, we have decided we are going to find an alternative solution because the sound is so much better than our previous sound bar. The different sound modes are awesome when watching a movie or playing video games and my music sounds so clear when connected via Bluetooth.

Thank you for purchasing the Samsung Soundbar. I am sorry to hear that you had difficulties with your unit.
A common reason that the optical cord is not fitting properly is that there is a small cap on the connector end that needs to be removed. Please check for the cap.

I hope this helps to solve the sound issue. Should you need further assistance, please contact Samsung Customer Support toll-free at 1-800-SAMSUNG and a representative will gladly help you.

I've been eyeing a soundbar for about 12 months, but just couldn't pull the trigger on one or find one I REALLY liked... Finally got this one, setup was easy, the hardest part was finding someone to help me take my TV off the wall mount so I could plug in the optical cable to it... I WISH it had the ability to connect to TV's (other than Samsung brands) via WiFi... that is my only complaint... and technically, it offers Bluetooth connectivity, my TV just didn't have it (which i was kinds of surprised at). That's why I'm giving it 5 stars, sounds is great, bass is good for a self contained sub, transitions pretty flawlessly between my music playing through my phone via Bluetooth, back to the TV. Pretty happy with it so far.

I won't pretend to know the sound quality differences among optical, bluetooth, WiFi, or HDMI audio, but testing the different settings and pairing with the HDTV (I have a Samsung KS8500 for reference) was simple with the included remote. The sound quality from the HDMI connection is noticeably clear, but not by a large margin from the WiFi sound. Also paired an Android phone with the bluetooth with ease. The internal subwoofer is the main feature for my taste, and it did not disappoint. I found substantial lows at bass setting #3 (goes from 0-6). The volume at below 50% (really, even 25%) is more than enough to fill an average living room, and you do get the movie theater rumbling effect that a more conventional external subwoofer provides. This soundbar has a suitable number of presets, like clear voice, movie, sports, etc., though I would have liked more customizability. I was able to pair my TV remote with the soundbar relatively quickly, so it is unlikely that I will be using the proprietary remote all that much once I have settled on a sound setting I prefer. The display on the far right is small with large scrolling letters, which is a little bit of a turnoff if you have equipment that doesn't match the LED color or the font displayed. The product is large, heavy, and comes with mounting pieces if needed. All wires are hidden properly when sitting below my mounted TV on a short console table, so I will not be mounting it. Overall, aside from a few aesthetic preferences, this soundbar is a solid choice for a family home theater.

The Samsung sound bar was extremely easy to set up and link with devices. There are numerous input options so it is very flexible. The remote takes a little bit of learning since the volume and bass controls are difference than what you normally expect (usually an up and down button - this one is one button with a rocker switch). It's really nice, in an apartment, to be able to control the bass. The sound quality was very good - can easily replace a surround sound system. The profile seems to spread out the sound. One slight issue was the holes for the legs were not quite drilled properly so struggled getting them on. Overall a definite 5-star product.

Having owned the Atmos-enabled big brother of this soundbar, I was really interested to see what this would sound like without the wireless subwoofer and rear speakers on my main setup. This bar is currently set up in my den, which is, frankly, a bad arrangement for audio. It's a basement with hard surfaces and parallel walls, so everything tends to sound harsh. To my surprise, this sound bar puts out a nice, rich sound, even under these conditions. Dialogue sounds excellent and clear, with deep lows and clear mids and highs. There are several modes that can be selected depending on source material and conditions, and you have full control over bass and treble. You can also set an audio delay. This is the first time I've ever had to set a delay. Lip sync was off significantly with my player, but matching them up was extremely easy. Watching and listening to the Martian in 4K was immersive and, again, dialogue was a pleasure to listen to. While the soundbar has a built-in "subwoofer," I would say that low-end sound effects are clear but are lacking that punch a dedicated subwoofer usually gives. For a single-bar setup, however, this thing is impossible to beat. It's well built and weighs a ton, which usually means good internal construction, which in turn leads to low distortion. Included in the package is a wall mount (two L-Brackets for an easy, minimal install) and the hardware to mount the bar to the mount. If you've ever used a Samsung remote this comes with the typical Sammy remote with minimal buttons and a nice layout. While this integrates with Samsung equipment well, don't be afraid of pairing it up with other brands. I'm currently using this with a Sony 4K Blu-ray player and LG TV. Everything plays nice together. If you're looking for a simple, clean setup with rich, detailed dialogue, this is a great choice. If you're into deep, pounding bass and movies with a lot of explosions, you may want to consider the Atmos-enabled version, which is significantly more expensive.

I purchased the sound bar to go with my new Sony 930e television. I almost bought the matching Sony Sound bar but felt based on the in store demonstration that the Samsung sounded better. I discovered that the height of the Samsung sound bar blocks the IR receiver on the Sony TV as it sits in the TV stand. I suppose that a wall mounted configuration would not have this issue but that is now how we are arranged. I now know why the Sony Soundbars have a low flat profile.

This speaker bar seemed a bit beefy at first glance, but I get it now -- it packs a punch and has a very good dynamic range. Despite my initial concerns, it does not stand out like a sore thumb -- it blends well sitting on the console with our 55" HDTV. Setup was easy with the fiber optic video cable. It was also easy enough to program the satellite remote to work with this unit (so I can add the remote that came with this unit to the pile of other unused remotes). Am really pleased with this one...

Good Sound Except at Low Conversation Volume

This sound bar is pretty decent. Watching action packed movies, listening to music, tv shows, it does a pretty good job. You can definitely tell it is a stereo + bass setup, but it comes with room filling sound. So, why the three stars? The speaker just doesn't keep up with conversation below normal volume - the bass overwhelms the conversation and leaves things sounding muffled and washed out. If characters are whispering - forget being able to figure out what was said from audio alone. So, my first real foray into actually learning and caring about various sound system options started a couple years ago when outfitting my home theater. My impression of sound bar choices back then were that they were subpar and had a hard time filling a large open room. An opportunity to evaluate this unit gave soundbars another chance and with the first few test media - action move and some music, I was impressed. I tested this on my living room TV which doesn't have external speakers - just the ones built into the TV (wouldn't be fair to compare against my theater setup) and was blown away by how much more immersive the sound became, how it felt like it filled the room, and really gave depth to the movie. I could tell that it was just stereo, but it was certainly worlds better. Later, as I settled in to watch one of my normal shows on hulu, I started to notice the shortcoming. Conversation scenes with little background noise or scenes where characters were whispering were very hard to decipher. I tried playing around with audio settings in the hulu app to compensate, but they didn't make much difference. The best solution was to go to the TV settings, enable both the TV speakers and the soundbar, then set the TV volume such that for low conversations, the TV would dominate and result in audible dialog, but everywhere else the soundbar would dominate and the room filled with great sound. This actually was a pretty good compromise - though it did require plenty of tweaks as setting the TV too loud would negate the improvement provided by the soundbar, but not loud enough and you'd get an echo effect which was more annoying since it happened all the time versus the conversation issue. If these speakers had better low conversation response, they would easily have earned 4 stars from me. But given that the fix is not necessarily universally available, tricky to set up, I must deduct that star. In summary, great speaker for music and pulse raising movies where everyone is shouting or talking at a decent volume. If you're going to watch talk shows, news, sitcoms, or anything where people carry conversations at normal or lower volumes, you will be quite disappointed.

Beautiful Soundbar Lacks Needed Bass & Volume

Samsung Soundbar Sound+ 6-Series/HW-MS650 Physical Appearance/Aesthetics: The tastefully designed Soundbar Sound Plus’ 9 speakers are housed in a sleek, minimalist, understated-yet-sophisticated, dark titan/sterling silver-colored brushed aluminum rectangular chassis w/beveled edges/curves. The logo-free black metal speaker grill complements the substantial build quality, providing the look/feel of a hi-quality/hi-end soundbar. The small, text-only, 3-character LED display located on the far right side is hidden behind the grill, & displays audio source, sound modes, inputs, & menu options clearly. It can be toggled off if you’d rather not see it. Dimensions: -A hefty 13½ lbs. -A substantial 42” wide x 3” high x 5” deep Con: The Soundbar+ sits too high on my TV stand in front of my Sony X900B 4K LED TV, partially blocking the bottom of the TV & hampering its ability to receive signal from the TV remote. (My TV & TV stand room placement don't allow for a wall-mounted option.) Connectivity: -ARC HDMI port: clearly the best way to connect to TV/Blu-ray, as it can transmit higher res audio & specific signals that optical can’t. Yet the Soundbar+ doesn’t come w/an HDMI cable; it comes w/only 1 optical cable, & the manual shows optical as the preferred connection. -Digital Optical (TosLink) port for non-ARC-ready TVs -3.5mm analogue auxiliary port for portable devices -Wireless: Bluetooth & Wi-Fi Connectivity/Compatibility Problems: The Samsung MW-MS650 Soundbar+ functions best when paired w/the latest Samsung Smart TVs. When pairing w/competing TV brands, it seems to have compatibility issues when it comes to seamless connectivity & full functionality, especially when it comes to pairing it w/my top-of-the-line Sony X900B big-screen LED 4K TV, which IS equipped w/4K HDMI pass-thru w/ARC (Audio Return Channel). Even though I made sure that my Sony’s HDMI CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) functionality was activated in the TV’s setup menu, I still found “no joy” when initially attempting to connect the 2 units. I had great difficulty attempting to connect via optical cable (the instruction manual’s preferred/recommended method). After a full hour of separate troubleshooting sessions w/both Sony & Samsung level-2 tech support reps (w/case # documentation), both reps reluctantly admitted that there seemed to be areas of “proprietary incompatibility”. Eventually, I was able to connect via HDMI ARC-ready, but this required a cumbersome & exacting ‘power off—plug in—power up’ sequence in order to make it work. Again, this Samsung soundbar is meant, primarily, to be paired w/other newer model Samsung TVs. As proof, I was able to quickly achieve both HDMI & digital optical connectivity w/my little Samsung UN32J6300 Smart TV in the kitchen, which is neither a big-screen TV (just 32”) nor a 4K TV (just 1080p full HD). But w/my Sony big-screen, 4K Smart TV, both digital optical & even Bluetooth connectivity proved to be a bridge too far. I also tried to connect the Soundbar+ w/my new HP All-in-1 PC via HDMI & Bluetooth. While the HDMI option was successful, Bluetooth was sketchy w/a slight, out-of-sync delay while watching video. Furthermore, the Soundbar+ even gives the physical appearance of being made to pair w/their new Samsung TVs, w/its brushed metal look, the exact same power cord, & the ability to provide power to the TV w/a separately purchased cord. Samsung seems to be attempting to do what Sony tried to do in the ‘80s & what Apple has done over the last several years—create a proprietary home entertainment ecosystem. The drawback in this case, at least in my view, is that the increasingly proprietary compatibility features make it difficult to consider components like the MS650 Soundbar+ as a “universal” or interchangeable soundbar for those w/competing TV brands like Sony. It’s worth noting that even loyal Samsung customers have complained, including on Samsung’s own website, that the MS650 Soundbar+ has ARC-compatibility issues w/2013 Samsung Smart TVs, such that the Samsung TVs don’t recognize that they have the Samsung Soundbar+ connected to them, even when receiving audio. Surprisingly Full Feature Set at This Price Point ($450): -Single-body design -3-channel (left, right, center) hi-res -Multi-Speaker Array includes: -9 individually-powered custom drivers -6 woofers & 3 tweeters -Distortion-cancelling technology -ARC (Audio Return Channel) output provides 4K pass thru w/HDR (Hi Dynamic Range) -Built-in Bluetooth: 2.4/5GHz, but, unfortunately, no aptX support -Built-in Wi-Fi w/wireless music streaming -Multiroom & Surround Sound-supported app to integrate w/music services. Note: When I connected to Wi-Fi w/the Soundbar+, I experienced frequent connect/disconnect episodes & the accompanying display message, even when I used it for HDMI audio. The irritating repeat notifications grow old quickly when watching a movie. -Only 1 single HDMI port, unfortunately: a couple more HDMI ports would’ve been helpful to prevent having to connect all our sources (Blu-ray player & Xbox, etc.) to the TV & pass audio to the Soundbar+. -Single slim remote for Soundbar+/TV w/discrete volume/bass controls -TV power-out socket: just 1 power cable for Samsung TV & Soundbar -Codecs: Supports both Dolby Digital 5.1 & DTS 2.0 -No Dolby Atmos support, unfortunately Sound: Even w/the six 4” x 2” mid/bass drivers (2 per channel), the avg.-to-very weak bass was a huge disappointment. The Soundbar+ simply lacks the gut punch of a separate subwoofer. I’m all for clean, compact, & minimalist design, but not at the expense of such a dramatic loss of bass performance. While the Soundbar+ offered better sound than my Samsung J6300 resident rear TV speakers, it was nowhere near as good as my Sony X900B resident front-facing speakers. (The Sony X900B has Magnetic Fluid Speaker technology to reproduce faithful hi-fi sound from a compact loudspeaker. Combined w/S-Force Front Surround 3D w/virtual 5.1 sound, it creates an enlarged audio 'sweet spot'.) Add to that my small Sony SWF-BR100/B 100W Wireless Subwoofer, w/which the Samsung Soundbar+ was incompatible, & the Soundbar+ just can’t compete. Even at max volume, the Soundbar+ really isn’t that loud, & it offers nowhere near the bass of my small wireless satellite subwoofer. It certainly wasn’t “earth-shattering” as their ad claims. In fact, the increase in volume from mid-level to high is so minimal that it’s hard to tell the difference in levels w/o a sudden jump in volume. So, if the Soundbar+ can’t match the superior sound I get from my Sony TV’s resident TV speakers w/wireless sub combo, why buy the soundbar? EQ (Equalization): I scrolled thru all 5 presets & sampled the different modes: -Standard: Sounds fairly neutral like you’d expect from a good stereo system. This is pretty much the default mode that I stayed w/80% of the time when watching cable TV. -Movie: Offers more of a big-screen soundtrack feel, but it’s far from fully immersive. I toggled to this mode to watch a film on Ultra-HD Blu-ray. If anything, it highlights the need for a quality Surround Sound system if you want to experience a fully immersive soundstage effect. -Music: I couldn’t tell much difference between Music & Standard. -Clear Voice: I switched to this mode when my hearing-impaired grandfather visited, better enabling him to make out the speech/dialogue segments. But there’s a trade-off w/some loss of fidelity. -Sports: To me, it’s just louder. But it does make voices clearer w/o diminishing the residual audio the way that Clear Voice does. -Individual EQ Component Mode: If you’re really into fine tuning/tweaking & want to pursue some imagined perfect tonal balance, there’s a hidden setting that offers access to a 7-band EQ. But the 5 presets will probably provide more options than you’ll ever use. Surround Sound: This mode is supposed to add depth & space, but Samsung’s decoding seems noticeably inadequate here. Unimpressed w/the simulated spatial distribution effect, I went back to the default Standard preset, which sounds fairly neutral. Smart Sound: I also tried the Smart Sound feature, which is supposed to select the best settings via digital optimization for the particular content you’re playing. With Smart Sound, all you have to do is adjust the discrete volume & bass controls to your liking. But even w/this digital optimization & manually bumping up the bass, I never felt like the bass was adequate, as the audio still sounded tinny. So, I went back to tinkering w/the bass, treble, & audio sync settings to tweak up the bass, but I still couldn’t get the punchy bass level I was looking for, at least as compared to my Sony SWF-BR100/B 100W Wireless Subwoofer that’s paired w/my Sony X900B TV, which, in itself, has 2 subwoofers in the 6 front-facing resident speakers. Remedy?: Unless/until I can try Samsung’s soon-to-be-released separate/dedicated subwoofer in combo w/the Soundbar+, the MS650 simply does not currently offer the depth, bass, & volume required to fully enjoy movies & music the way they were intended. Even w/total system power of 180W RMS & a +6 bass setting, there’s something major missing across almost the entire volume range. There’s simply not enough oomph or depth of sound! Unfortunately, ‘tepid’ & ‘lackluster’ are the best descriptors for the audio product delivered by the Soundbar+. For the size, weight, & cost of the Soundbar+, I expected a great deal more. Pricing: Overpriced at $450 for a subpar value w/muted bass/volume. Bottom Line: Due to the glaringly weak bass, the Soundbar+ doesn’t bring enough punch & isn’t ready for primetime, at least not until the Bass+ wireless subwoofer finally ships & I can test the system w/its sorely needed complement. So, I can’t recommend this in its current configuration, as there are much better options at comparable cost.

This soundbar was very easy to setup. To get full functionality (auto power on/off, wireless hookup, etc.) generally needs to be paired with a fairly new Samsung TV (see instructions for compatibility). I got this for a bedroom Panasonic TV that does not support wifi/Bluetooth connection. However didn't really need these functionalities. Connected with included optical cable (major bonus) to cable box, and have universal remote to power on and off with TV. Also connected to an auxiliary component via the AUX input. Unit has HDMI and Power OUT for connecting TV through soundbar, although I didn't use. Main selling point was limited space in bedroom for separate subwoofer. Was not disappointed as the sound quality is very good including bass. Obviously not going to perform same as a separate subwoofer, but very satisfactory for a 2nd television where high quality base is not imperative. Unit is very smart looking as is the streamlined remote. Scrolling LED display very easy to read from a distance. Only negatives so far is that 1)It will only connect to one Bluetooth device. It appears to have been designed for connection to TV rather than multiple devices. However connection to iPhone was simple. 2) Have not found a way to make wifi connection remain active (standby mode) when unit is off for use with other devices. Again appears to be more designed For TV connection and wifi was very simple to setup with Samsung MultiRoom app. Overall, very pleased for the price and my purpose as a 2nd TV soundbar.
