Good Product/ Had different Model Number on Drive
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Best Buy Website says this drive has a 5 Yr Parts & Labor Warranty but when I opened the box, the Warranty stated was only 1 Year. The actual hard drive now supports up to 6GBPS SATA 3.0 speed but the model number on the drive does not match the model number on the box. The SN matched both places however.

So far, so good!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The original hard drive on my computer fried/died/crashed (take your pick!), so Best Buy replaced it with a Barracuda hard drive. So far, the computer is running perfectly again, so I hope that the Barracuda has more life in it than the original hard drive (which was only two years old when it died!).

large quality drive
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This drive has the fastest conventional connection, Serial ATA, which is great. It is also the best when you are looking for the best bang for you buck. It is priced well and has 500gb. It comes with all wires included also. I also used them to setup a RAID once. Works well. Basically this is the best option unless you have the money and desire to get the western digital Raptor.

disappointed
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My Gateway desktop was purchased in 2005 and it's original hard drive failed last summer (July 31# and it's original monitor failed a few months before. I use my computer alot, so this is quite impressive. It starting making screeching noises and occasionally it wouldnt be detected by Bios, but sometimes it would and it stayed alive long enough for me to copy everything off #because Carbonite was the biggest waste of money#. I was in the middle of a job search so i rushed over to Best Buy 5 min before close and a great sales associate picked this drive out for me. I spent only $55 and was very pleased because I was broke. It was very easy to attach to my mother board, the instructions were straight forward to plug it in, but non-existent for making it a boot drive! However, I didn't have an OS disk and I was heavily reliant on a Windows Tech over the phone to get Windows installed and become bootable. They did a phenomenal job by giving me a serial key without proof of purchase and showing me how to fix the registry. I don't even remember what happened, but it was miraculous. It all worked great, everything was smooth, fast, quiet and was very happy for a year. 2 months ago I bought a little laptop and i've been sitting on the couch watching netflix on my PS3 and using the laptop, so I haven't used my desktop much. The last thing I did was install Portal 2 but never played it. This weekend I tried to use my Gateway and the all famiar screeching noise of the failing hard drive was coming out from under my desk. I started to use my wireless to copy my docs onto my laptop. I started a backup disc set. Then it started to crash every 20 min, then every 10, then every 5. I never finished the backup but I think i got most of it and its spread over 3 other drives. I ran diagnostics with the Seagate tools, not all tests were available and no problems found #?). Seagate website can't find the warranty. I tried booting with my windows disc. It crashes before I can login to it. Now, It simply won't start. I take very good care of my computer, recently i cleaned out the inside and replaced the heat sink glue. I always shut it down at night and I don't make it work constantly. I turned everything upside down looking for the receipt, only to find the ser# on my receipt doesn't match my drive!!! So, If I discover that this warranty is only 1 year, I think I'm going to call Seagate and Best Buy and flip a lid. Yes I got the job I was interviewing for at the time, but the last thing I need is to spend $200 for geeksquad to repair my 7 year old Gateway or spend $600 just to replace the tower. Spend a little more on another brand or make SURE you have a 5 year warranty.

Good buy for average user.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this to replace one of those OEM drives that are out there. Be careful as the OEM drive was sold as new but was really a used drive. Tiny little sticker I didn't notice until after the fact. (Lasted one year) This new drive works great.

Good SATA drive for the price
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The box comes with the SATA cable and adapter for SATA power plug, would be nice if the Seagate software to transition my data worked for Windows vista drives, as the attempt to do the transfer failed. Other wise it is a decent drive and has read/write speeds that are on par with an IDE drive that runs beside it.

Nice - While It Works
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Originally purchased about a year ago, I had read reviews that warned of short lifespan. I figured those were written by people that had back luck, and it turns out they were. I am a member of that group. My original purchase quit after about seven months and I was ready to buy another but checked on a warranty. Seagate made checking that easy (keep your serial numbers, etc) and replaced it with no real hassles - if you don't count losing some data and the time involved with installing, reloading and reconfiguring. Now the replacement has died and I can't see myself getting another. Perhaps you'll have better luck, but I'm leary of Seagate now.

Excellent value for the money
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is an excellent drive - as are all seagate drives. The warranty is very good (check the competition) Access time a tad better than the nearest competitor. All and all a good buy at a good price. Dunno about windoze but it's a shoe in for a Liinux machine and raid setup is a breeze...

Fast buy Loud
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. When I was looking for a new hard drive, specs were number one in my book. I would have to say, that I would sacrifice some of the speed for the annoyingly loud sounds that this drive produces. When the computer is idle it sounds like a meat grinder. Seagate claims that this is an ultra quiet drive, but that’s the only thing I hear. Don’t get me wrong, its an amazing drive, but it is noticeably louder than any drive I have ever owned. I have an external Lacie that is at least 50% quieter than this drive is.

Seagate 500GB SATA HDD
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Needed a drive to backup desktop and laptop. I have a 250GB IDE drive in my desktop and wanted one to connect to the SATA port. Using Windows XP Pro, installed, drive was recognized on boot, installed drivers, ready to go. Just what I wanted.

Difficult to select good from bad
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This seemed to be a good value in capacity and performance. I purchased it late 2008 and it worked well for nearly a year. One day after a reboot, the drive would spin up but the BIOS wouldn't recognize the drive. I understand this to be a firmware bug that affects many Seagate drives manufactured during a period of time. Like others, I too had a box labeled as ST3500641AS but with a ST3500320AS label on the drive. Some affected drives are likely still out there (12/2009) in both retail boxes and systems. Seagate honored their generous warranty with my drive. However, unless you are certain you can identify that the Seagate drive is without the firmware bug, why take chances with losing your important data?

Great for replacement drive
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I used this drive to replace/add a hard drive in a dell R410 rack server. Fit right in place. Only issue was the screws provided have round heads and you need flat screws for clearance to slide the drive in place.

Good Product
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was up and running in about 20 minutes....cloning my old drive to new took about 30 minutes but i have many movies and music on it.
