Customers are saying

Customers commend the Expansion Desktop 8TB External USB 3.0 Hard Drive for its substantial storage capacity, ease of use, and fast USB 3.0 transfer speeds. Many appreciate its affordable price and quiet operation, along with its compact and sleek design. The drive's size is also praised for its suitability for backing up multiple systems. A minor drawback noted by some is the need for a separate power supply.

IT will NOT stay plugged in I have to sit it on the table and literally make sure I do NOT shake the table at ALL or it comes unplugged from the device!

Only positive is the amount of space for the price but everything else is a negative. The drive is extremely loud and the speeds are extremely inconsistent. Download speeds would vary from a high of around 25mbps and would then drop to 0 for minutes at a time. Compared to my internal ssd that stays at a constant 75mbps. I returned the item within a day of opening it.

    Incredibly slow write performance

Drive is primarily used for backups, which involve high-volume writing. Due to the Shingled magnetic recording (SMR) technology (which is not revealed in the product information), write performance is extremely poor. It is less than 1/4 of the speed I would expect, making USB 3.0 pretty useless. Watch out -- do your research before making this purchase!

My partner and i loaded up 8tb of images from our hols. Both have high mp digi. It took about 4/5 weeks to do so. Yhe unit was bought on our hols. It was 4/5 weeks old and failed. Sent it back to seagate for their expertise in data recovery. Waited 40+business days only to be told that they could (?) not recover my files. So not only was the unit a heap of useless tech, their claimed data recovery is the same. Do not buy from seagate! Unreliable and unrecoverable!

    Not compatible with Mac

Mac users be forewarned: this doesn't work with Mac OS High Sierra 10.13.x. When I returned it to my local best buy, the customer service agent confirmed that there have been a lot of returns from other Mac users. It came formatted as Windows NT and failed immediately after I tried to reformat it for the Mac OS... the drive wouldn't mount and then could not be erased, formatted or partitioned for any operating system. I'm very disappointed in Seagate. Avoid this at all costs if you want a Mac-centric solution. It's awful.

    Broken PlayStation

I’m fuming. I plugged this hard drive into my PlayStation and it kept switching my console off during data transferring. Now, I’m left with a broken PlayStation. It’s lagging so bad that it won’t even pull up menus without crashing now. I’ve tried all of the online fixes, but to no avail. Customer service is sending a new hard drive, but doing nothing about my (less than one year old) console. What good is a new hard drive when my device is broken?
