I can say that the Shark Air Purifier MAX does work. It senses when the air quality has dropped and will ramp up the fan speed as necessary. The first time I turned it on it sensed my stagnant air had an mid-80's quality. It will also detect VOC's. It detects when the air is full of fumes from cooking (air quality drops to the 80's), or humidity from the bathroom after a shower (air quality drops to the low 90's) or when my wife is burning a scented candle (air quality drops to the 60's). And in the absence of CONTINUOUSLY running items which reduce the air, the Shark will slowly get the reported quality up to the high 90's. If you run your air-reducing items continuously, such as a scented candle, the Shark product will actually be doing harm for what you intend since the machine removes the odor from the air. The machine itself feels very light, although you shouldn't take this as a negative. It is just a simple shell, a fan and a filter. I would hope it is not heavy. The weight of the shipped product is all from the cardboard. The buttons on the top are super responsive and have a very comfortable tone. It is very nice that there is the function to reduce the intensity of the display light as well as turn it off completely. Having the ability to run the machine on manual vs automatic is also much appreciated. The device is rated for 1200 sqft. I run this on a floor that is half that, so I'm sure that this is more than sufficient for my intended area. It always runs at 97+% air quality and as a result the fan is always running low (on auto mode). Even when on max speed, the fan is not loud at all which is wonderful. The question I have is whether air purifiers in general really "work" and change much for the majority of users and whether you need a $300 product. Sure, if you live in an area that is known to have poor air quality, such as a major city with smog problems or an area common affected by wild fires, and your air conditioning comes from a window unit or a radiator, air purifiers are probably going to "work". It is a simple machine that pushes air through a filter and removes stuff that doesn't fit through the filter (e.g. particulate matter). And if your product has the ability to filter VOC's (volatile organic compounds) as claimed by the shark product, it'll supposedly clean the odors from the air. I lived in New York City for 4 years with a window unit AC. The windows in my walk-up apartment had screens on them. They would get absolutely covered in soot from all the cars after a few months. The paper towel when washing the screens would be completely BLACK. So I know the air quality in New York, with respect to particulate matter, is pretty bad. So a basic filter will do great, but for most people who aren't living in a terrible-air metro area really need one? I doubt it. Moreover, do you need a $300 product to do that particulate level of filtering? Probably not. I've seen some YouTube videos of people who get a standard 20x20 filter for an air conditioner ($20 or so), a 20x20 box fan ($40 or so) and some duct tape ($2 or so), put em together and get a great air filter for under $75. The Shark product is rated for 0.1-0.2 microns, whereas some of these 20x20 filters are rated for down to 0.3 microns. Keep in mind, these 20x20 filters aren't rated for VOC's like the Shark is, so there is that. The thing to keep in mind is that most peoples' houses (at least in the US) have full blown air conditioning units that require a 20x20 box filter. All the air that is run into my house through the air conditioner is already passing through a 20x20 filter (mine's 20x20x2). If you live in an apartment complex this is most certainly the case too. Moreover, your AC unit has an intake that takes in air from your house, so that "unpurified" air is recirculated through the HVAC again and filtered. The only difference with an air purifier is that it will just be closer to the source of the problem and clean it faster. Do I recommend the Shark Air Purifier max? Absolutely, great product. Do you need it? It is not so much a question about the Shark product in particular but any air purifier, and for 90% of people, I'd say no since your HVAC already has a decent filter and recirculates the air in your house.

The Shark Air Purifier Max is quiet, convenient, and effective. It was very easy to set up – just remove the protective plastic from the filter and plug in-- and it’s clear that filter changes will be just as simple. Operation is easy thanks to the helpful display and intuitive controls. The Air Purifier Max samples the air around it and shows a variety of metrics on screen, from a simple color-coded Good / Fair / Poor quality rating to detailed amounts of different particulate sizes. It also has an option to use those measurements to automatically control the fan -- there are four fan speeds, which range from very quiet to somewhat loud, and they can also be controlled manually. The unit itself is somewhat large – a cylinder shape about 2 feet tall and 1 foot in diameter. That’s maybe not surprising given the amount of area it can cover, but I thought it was a bit larger than it appeared in the photo. Overall, this is a helpful, convenient air purifier that is easy to use.

The Shark Air Purifier MAX is a fantastic addition to the home. Not only is the design a sleek cylinder shape but also aesthetically appealing to the eye if you prefer a dark profile. I am accustomed to white air purifiers, so this fit perfectly into my bedroom with black furniture. Shark Air Purifier MAX utilizes a "Clean Sense IQ" to adjust the flow of air through the purifier in proportion to air quality. This is an absolutely fabulous feature, instead of choosing one constant air flow it will adjust to need. I believe this to not only be power efficient, but sound efficient in level of flow, along with preserve longevity of filter (approx 6-12 months per manufacturer recommendation). The Clean Sense technology also monitors multiple particle sizes (PM1, 2.5, and 10). I do have a purifier with similar adjustment technology, but it only measures 1 particle size... a nice upgrade to know more is being monitored! This air purifier does a fantastic job at not creating overpowering noise. When the air quality needs to have increased flow, there is a noticeable noise however very tolerable all-in-all. Equipped with a HEPA filter, I have been able to rest more comfortable knowing that a HEPA filter is involved in purification. Do have a cat at home, so having a collection of cat hair into a filter is goals. I also have a newborn at home, sharing same room. In the room, an air humidifier, this shark air purifier, and a white noise machine. This combination is perfect for a happy baby breathing fresh air in! In a well maintained noise environment. It is difficult to review an air purifier and be like "wow, my air is so much more pure, I can breath better"... but, I do feel I am breathing better in my bedroom. Along with this, having a display shows some sense of what the purifier is doing, providing comfort each day. I will most definitely be purchasing a replacement filter for this device.

We have lots of cats and dust in our house so we've put various air purifiers throughout our house to try and keep the air as clean as possible. This Shark air purifier has been a good addition and we're pleased with it so far. It's a nice design and on the auto setting has been totally quiet and unobtrusive. Compared to some others we have, I'd say it's more of a "no frills" model but it does the most important thing: air filtering. It doesn't have Wifi so you can't connect to it via an app. The manual refers to a remote control, but that's an extra accessory that's available for purchase. I guess it's nice to have that option if you really need it, but for the price I thought they would have included it. For the most part, you can just set it and forget it, but it would be nice to turn the bright display off remotely if you forget to do that before getting into bed (for example). There are three display levels, by the way: full bright, medium, and completely off. The noise level is about what I expected. There are four fan levels plus the auto setting where it adjusts the speed based on the sensed air quality. At manual setting 1 it's inaudible in my home environment (about 37dB background level). Setting 2 went up to 48dB, setting 3 was 58dB, and setting 4 was quite loud at 65dB. In theory, you should only need the higher settings for short periods to clear out contaminants. The replacement filters appear to run $70 to $90, the more expensive option being for the filter with Microban antimicrobial coating on it. The filter is easy to remove, and the instructions recommend removing and flipping it over every 3 months to more evenly make use of the filter. It also says the filter should last 6 to 12 months.

Our health improved overnight. Allergy symptoms almost vanished. House USED to be very dusty but not anymore! I seriously cant believe i waited this long to purchase an air purifier. Shark has nailed this one, too. Great features. Easy to use. Set it up and basically forget about it. It runs itself.

This air purifier is very effective. We can hear it kick up as soon as we start cooking and keeps the dust in the air to a minimum. We've had other ones in the past and this one is far superior.

I live in a very dusty area of California. I can fathom living without air purifiers in my home. I have several and while a lot of them work well they usually don’ last long and are not as quiet as they state. This leads me to the first couple of things with this purifier it is extremely quiet eve. At max volume it’s lower quieter than most of the purifiers I have had. I love the auto function on this one, as it just lets me set it and forget it in my boys room and it turns on when it needs to. It doesn’t run all day it’s just turns on every so often when the aire starts to get bad. I wish more purifiers auto function worked this well other I have had just stay on and the power of the fan fluctuates but never full stops. I also like the fact that it shows how much of the air has been cleaned in the room on a scale of zero to one hundred makes it very easy to know how clean your air is. I cannot find much to fault this purifier about. It works extremely well and is very quiet which are the two things you could ask for in a purifier. Highly recommended

Talk about cleaning but super quiet. Really like the Auto mode! Once it recognizes the air went from Good to fair it starts working to clean the air ince it does it goes back to low. But the whole time you can hardly hear it

Shark air purifier failed to detect strong odors

The Shark air purifier Max is a nicely designed unit. It’s not very large, it measures about 22” tall and is 10” wide. The controls are fairly intuitive and easy to figure out. The HEPA filter is easily removed by turning over and unscrewing the bottom of the unit by ¼ turn. I have this setup on my office, I love the black color and the attractive design. I have it set to “Auto” and it runs very quiet, I don’t even hear the fan. The display was showing that the air is clean at 100%. Once it shows 100% for 10 minutes, it enters “eco” mode and supposedly, the filter life will be optimized. In “Auto mode”, the filter should automatically detect changed in the air quality and adjust the fan speed accordingly or the 100% display should change to a lower number. To test this, I placed another HEPA air purifier, let’s call it “Blue” next to the Shark Max and spray painted a plastic model kit in my office. The Blue unit sprung to life pretty much immediately, the fan went on high and a red LED showed instead of the normal blue/green one. The Shark Max did not seem to detect the odors. The odor was quite strong, eventually the Shark display dropped to 99%, but it was still on low speed. The Blue kept running at full speed. Overall I can’t say that I recommend this filter. It failed at detecting very strong paint smells, although the Blue unit I’m comparing it to is approximately 2x the cost of the Shark. I feel the Shark should’ve detected the odors.

I usually use Whirlpool units but I decided to try this unit out because of its 360 compact design. The purifier works great. There are only 2 minor issues: The display is too bright and cannot dim. There is no pre-filter for the filter so you will need to change the filter more frequently

Compact and unobtrusive, considering the power, the system was able to manage 900 square feet of unfinished basement storage quite well. I have allergies and always seemed to be bothered after a trip to the basement, after running the Shark for a week, I don't have any trouble after working down there. Set this up in the basement of the house and it made a huge difference over the course of the past few weeks. Filter access and system setup was no fuss and the navigation menus were clear. Cord length was decent for where we located it but depending upon your space you may want a longer cord. A nice feature was the color changing ring around the display. When we first started running it, it was a red ring for two of the three particle sizes and over the course of the first evening it improved to yellow then blue. Variable speed selection is also nice. Set on MAX (4), it was a bit distracting, now we run it down at 1 or 2 and it runs very quietly. Having a remote also makes it easy to switch from across the room. Not sure how long it will be before we need to swap filters, but filter changing instructions are very clearly written.

The unit takes up more space than I would have anticipated, but seems to do a pretty good job of cleaning the air. I like that it has an indicator as to how clean your air is, however, it always says our air is 100% clean which I am skeptical of. Despite this, the air coming out does have a "clean smell." It is very quiet, so if you're looking for good fan noise in your bedroom per se this is not the unit for you. Even at full speed, the fan is barely heard. It is nice that the lights are dimmable and able to be turned off completely, as I have this in my bedroom next to my bed so it doesn't keep me awake at night. One thing I do wish it had, though, is a remote control so that I don't have to get up and change the fan speed manually if I want it to be switched from Auto low medium or high. Additionally, the cord is quite short - barely 6ft - so keep this in mind for your placement, as you may need an extension cord. Overall, though, another great household product from the folks at Shark!
