Leaks garbage while vacumming and auto clean. Bad

I purchased this less than a month ago expecting the auto-empty system to be a major convenience feature and unfortunately it has been the opposite. In the last week alone, I’ve had debris and hair slowly leak back out of the vacuum near the dust cup/neck area on three separate occasions. After vacuuming, I’ll find clumps of hair and dust hanging from the unit or falling onto the floor. This defeats the entire purpose of the sealed, auto-empty design and makes me question whether the internal flap/seal or airflow path is functioning correctly.
Whats annoying is that this isnt from misuse or overfilling. The base does perform the auto-empty cycle, but afterward, dirt and hair still escapes from the vacuum body itself. For a $500 product that heavily advertises its “2L Auto-Empty System” and hygienic design, this is a serious design flaw and makes the whole vacuum useless at this point. I got rid of my 8 year old dyson v8 thinking that this would be a major uograde and in do upset/disappointed.
I’ve double-checked that everything is seated correctly and that the dust cup is properly installed, yet the issue continues to happen. This has now occurred three times in one week.
I really wanted to love this vacuum because the suction and features are great, but the auto-empty system (the main selling point) is unreliable and messy. At first i wish i went with the PowerDetect pro but now am most likely returning for a dyson.
If you are buying this specifically for the convenience of auto-empty and a clean experience, be aware that garbage can leak back out of the unit after use.
I hope Shark addresses this issue because right now, this feature is not performing as advertised.

Great Vac for a Premium

The Shark Detect vacuum takes a great feature of robot vacs and adds it to the stick vac world. It is powerful, lightweight and easy to use. All these features could come at a cost though, a financial ask of roughly $500. It is a great product that I would recommend to anyone but the price will be a barrier unless you can get it on sale.
What works really well on this vacuum and is one of its two standout features is the auto empty feature. This is fantastic and works flawlessly. Every time you put the vac back on the stand, the base sucks out all the dust and other floor inhabitants into a large bin kept in the base. It is an amazing benefit for multiple reasons. First - it takes the work out of your hands. You don’t need to empty the bin nearly as much as you would with a normal stick vac. Second - the less frequent emptying of a bin in the trash means less mess. It’s always a bit messy to dump out a vacuum bin. Third - there is no expensive branded bag in the bin that you need to buy. Everything just falls into the bin and you dump it out. This saves money since you don’t need to buy a potentially expensive Shark branded bag every time, plus it is more eco friendly to not throw a bag away along with whatever the vac sucks up.
The other big standout feature is the “Detect” part of this vac. Essentially the vac is “smart” enough to tell when you move from a hard floor to carpet or a rug and it can adjust the brush function and suction level based on the surface and its density. This is nice for most homes that are not all one type of surface.
The base, as you might imagine, keeps the vac charged while it hangs there, which is good because I would rate the battery life at a 7 out of 10. I use the vacuum to do two average sized rooms with the Detect feature engaged and it can take the battery down from all four bars to two. It’s not a deal breaker for me because it’s not too bad at all really, but I wish it was a little better. The good thing is it will almost always be fully charged when you pick it up off the base.
As far as other features, there are some that are quite helpful, like the ability to bend the vac in the middle so you can easily vacuum under tables and other furniture, it’s one button press. I like that the battery pops out just like a drill or other battery powered tool, which means if you have battery degradation, you can buy a new battery instead of a whole new vacuum. The air filter is easy to access and clean, the brush bar on the bottom is also very easy to remove and clean, the controls are pretty easy and intuitive.
The Shark Detect really is a nice vac with a lot of nice features. It works well and empties and charges itself. I think overall it is a great option to clean your floors. My concerns lie with the battery life (7 of 10) and the price. At $500 it is priced along with some vacs that “never lose suction” which may be a better value? If you can get this vac for less than $300 (as I type this it is on a Black Friday sale for $229) I would say it’s a good deal, but not at $499.

Shark - Detect Clean & Empty, Cordless Vacuum

The Shark - Detect Clean & Empty, Cordless Vacuum is all about efficient cleaning. The marquee feature which is a self evacuating dirt chamber on the vacuum itself proved to be it's best selling point during my use of it. After a fair bit of vacuuming, the canister in the vacuum itself will become full. Docking on the charging station, then pressing the moon button (which I found to be an odd choice for an icon) initiated the secondary vacuum system which removes the dirt from the vacuum itself and empties it into a separate container at the bottom of the unit. This secondary canister needs emptying every so often via a button which expels the waste into a trash bin. The entire system results in a clean, dust free removal of vacuumed items. I found this system to work fantastic, without error.
The vacuum itself charges fairly quickly, while I didn't sit around timing it, it was always ready when I needed it. While vacuuming, the modes will cycle depending on conditions. If you vacuum carpet, the mode with the strongest suction and fastest propulsion will be triggered. When on hard floors, a quieter, less suction will be triggered. My house is mostly hard wood and tile, so I was in the lower, quieter mode most of the time only using the maximum capabilities for occasional carpets and rugs. I found I was able to get about 30-40 min maximum out of a single charge, a far bit less than the advertised 60 minutes. I suppose if you vacuumed air and nothing else strenuous, you might get 60 minutes out of this thing. I was able to vacuum one floor at a time on the given charge with great details, or, I could do a quick cleaning through the entire house, which aids in keeping dog hair at a minimum.
The movement and weight of the Vacuum was nice. I found maneuverability to be good, though it was a bit too thick to get under beds and some couches. It did an adequate job if cleaning up most things from the floor, occasionally failing to get stuff clinging to carpets or missing some harder to get dog hair. With a few passes, it got an estimated 85% of the stuff up and was ideal for in between vacuuming's for when I have to bring out the big one. Noise was very nice on this unit, it does not have that shrill sound of most vacuums. It was more of a muted suction. The included attachments, while the work, were less than average and did not add much practical use to the otherwise main head and/or no attachment at all. The "thin" one wasn't thin enough to make cleaning things like a car happen, it was too thick. The flat "stair" cleaner offered practically zero use case. Honestly, i'm considering just throwing them out vs having to find a place to keep them.
There is also a S hook that came attached to the main shaft of the unit, I cannot figure out what it is for. Instructions give no assistance either. None of the attachments connect to it and I cannot find any purpose it servers. There is a spot on the charging unit to hold the thinner attachment, however, no place for the flat one. Overall, it feels like the attachments were an after thought and their storage even less of one.
The convenience and cleanliness of the shark along with it's adequate cleaning abilities makes this an great secondary vacuum to keep close by for those things which need daily or bi-weekly attention. I would not recommend this to be the sole vacuum for anyone with kids or pets. Perhaps in an apartment or smaller dwelling with no pets and a minimal amount of routine mess. Otherwise, this is not substantial enough.
I appreciate Shark for what they did well on this unit, and it does solve some fundamental issues with other style vacuums. If they can engineers one with more "heavy duty" capabilities, that would surely be a win for me. I will be happy to use this for my medium to light duty work and appreciate it's simplicity.

I’ve been using the Shark Detect Clean & Empty cordless vacuum for a while now, and overall, I’m impressed with its performance and features.
What I Love:
• Battery Life: The battery easily lasts through my entire home (about 3,000 sq. ft.) on a single charge, which is fantastic for a cordless vacuum.
• Auto-Empty System: This is a game-changer for convenience. However, since I have dogs, I do need to empty the vacuum a couple of times when cleaning the whole house because of the extra pet hair. The base is very easy to empty as well.
• Dirt Sensor Lights: The sensor lights are helpful for knowing when an area needs extra attention.
• Edge Cleaning: The edge detect feature is brilliant. When vacuuming along walls, the lights on the edge illuminate, and the vacuum boosts suction for thorough edge cleaning.
• Breakaway Wand: Perfect for reaching under beds, dressers, and other low furniture.
• Lightweight & Easy to Use: Maneuvering this vacuum is effortless.
• Excellent Dirt Pickup: It picks up dirt extremely well, leaving floors noticeably cleaner.
• Hair Management: Hair does not wrap around the roller, which is a huge plus for homes with pets or long hair.
• Crevice Tool Storage: The crevice tool has convenient storage on the base, which is a nice touch.
Things to Note:
• I did encounter an issue where the dirt sensor stayed red. After investigating, I found a clump of hair stuck in the brush tube at the flex point. A quick blow through one end cleared it.
• Make sure to clean the inside filter regularly (see pics if you’re posting visuals). A dirty filter can affect performance.
• In Auto Mode, the vacuum adjusts suction and roller speed based on dirt levels. Sometimes it slows down too much for my liking, but you can override this by switching to Boost Mode with the mode button.
• I wish the crevice tool had brushes on the end for better versatility.
Final Thoughts:
This vacuum combines smart features with convenience. Despite minor quirks, it’s powerful, efficient, and easy to use. I’m enjoying it and would definitely recommend it to others.

I’ve been using the Shark Detect Clean & Empty Cordless Vacuum for a while now, and it has completely changed how I clean my home. The auto-empty base is a game-changer — no more dumping dust after every use, and the 2L capacity means I can go weeks without touching it. Huge plus for allergies.
The Detect technology really works. It automatically adjusts suction depending on dirt levels and floor type, and you can actually see it respond in real time. It picks up fine dust, pet hair, and larger debris effortlessly, especially on hard floors and low-pile carpet.
Battery life is impressive. I can clean my entire house on a single charge, and the MultiFlex wand makes it easy to reach under furniture without bending or moving heavy pieces. The vacuum feels lightweight but still very powerful.
Filtration is excellent — the HEPA system noticeably improves air quality, which is important for my household. It’s also surprisingly quiet for how strong it is.
Yes, it’s an investment, but the performance, smart features, and convenience justify the price. If you’re looking for a premium cordless vacuum that actually delivers, this one is 100% worth it. Highly recommend!

We live in turbo mode

This Shark vacuum is fantastic if you have an active household, a messy kid, and several cats who seem to turn feral the moment they wake up. We’ve really put it through the test over the past couple of weeks, and for the most part, we absolutely love it.
I’m a huge fan of the auto-detect feature, which lets the vacuum sense dirt levels / floor type and adjust the suction on its own. When I move from hardwood to a rug, it automatically ramps up the power for a deeper clean. My wife, on the other hand, hates that feature and lives exclusively in turbo mode. We both clean a lot, and the one thing we completely agree on is the light weight of this vacuum. That’s the standout feature here. We have another stick vacuum that feels almost twice as heavy and requires us to adjust the wand every time we dock it into the charging station. The Shark doesn’t do that, it just drops right into its base with no fuss.
Suction power - I think it’s great, especially with the auto-detect. The vacuum also has a light on the cleaning head, which is one of those features you never think about until you use it, and then you can’t live without it.
Adaptability - This is the other big win, as you can bend the wand in half so the vacuum head slides easily under couches and furniture. With pets and kids this is a lifesaver, not having to crouch or bend over every time really saves my back.
The issues - All minor, but worth mentioning. The vacuum head snaps back into the locked upright position a little too easily. I’ve been vacuuming more than once and accidentally locked it upright, which then forces me to step on it to unlock it again. It’s an annoyance. I also found the dust canister a difficult to open if you want to empty it manually or access the filter for washing. The charging base only holds two attachments as well, so anything extra will have to sit in a drawer or get swapped in and out.
Overall - It’s a great vacuum, especially if you have pets or little ones. It has been perfect for us while moving into a new home, because the lightweight design makes it easy to haul between houses. It also works with our other similar Shark charging bases, which was a big bonus since we already own a previous, less advanced version. That means we can leave a charging base at each house and swap the vacuums around as needed.

I moved from a Dyson V7 to this item. My first impressions are good. The vacuum is light and maneuvers well. The light on the front does a good job in dark areas. The battery run time seems to be fairly decent. If I put it on max suction, I can clean nearly all of my house (4,000+ sq ft). I use it on a variety of floors from hardwood, vinyl, thick carpet and it does good.
I notice if you push it over large clumps of hair or larger debris, it tends to push it and not suck it up. I don't think the suction is as strong as the dyson, but for everyday maintaining it works well. The stand is good, except for one design flaw. First, they put the holder for the nozzle attachment on the rear of the base. So if you place this up against a wall, you can't get to it easily. There is also no place to put the second wider attachment.
The dirt cup on the vacuum is very small and fills up quickly. This means you either have to make a trip back to the stand to empty it or open it yourself and dump it in the nearest garbage can. Not a deal breaker but just FYI. When you place the vacuum on the stand, there is a button with a quarter moon that you press and it empties it into the larger canister. This is a cool feature I think.

I have owned cordless vacuums and also robot vacuums with a self-emptying feature, but this is the first time I have seen the self-emptying feature on a cordless vacuum. At first I wondered if it was something that I would even want on a device like this, but it ended up being a nice bonus to a very nice product.
Pros:
- Assembly is intuitive and simple. And when it comes time to disconnect/reconnect the vacuum handle to use it as a handheld, it is easy to do.
- The included attachments are very helpful. You get one attachment for corners/edges and one for upholstery. I have used the upholstery attachment in order to vacuum my carpeted stairs and it worked well.
- The vacuum charges quickly so you can easily use it several times per day as needed.
- It has an auto-detect feature, knowing when to increase vacuum power for particularly soiled spots.
- This vacuum is pretty lightweight and easy to maneuver in tight areas.
- For a battery powered vacuum, it has pretty good suction. I recommend always using it on full power when cleaning carpet, but the Eco setting will be fine for flat surfaces and will extend your battery life.
- While the docking station with the auto-empty feature isn't necessary for a product like this, I found it convenient to not have to dump the waste myself. But more importantly, I liked how the dock provides me with a place to store the vacuum. I usually have to find a place in a closet to lean vacuums like this, but now it has a permanent home where I will always know where it is and it will always be charged when I go to grab it.
Cons:
- Battery life can be limited so don't plan to use this device for super big jobs. It's meant more for smaller jobs here and there as needed. For that purpose, it's perfect! But don't plan to replace your regular vacuum if you have a medium/large home. It could work well for small homes or apartments though.
- The base/dock has a nice place to store one attachment but not both.
This Shark vacuum performed exceptionally well and I look forward to using it for years to come.

Bought on sale. Love the self empty compartment, love the battery life, love the look. I just love it, okay? Also pretty quiet, for a vacuum, but powerful. Light weight and easy to maneuver. Highly recommend!
The only thing that I don’t love- I don’t see anywhere to store the attachments when they’re not in use. Could be that there is a spot and I just didn’t read the instructions (that’s how easy it was to put together). I’ll have to do more research. Definitely still recommend buying the vacuum.

Auto-empty cordless vacuum
|
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
I wasn’t sure about how good the auto-empty capabilities of the Shark Detect with Clean and Empty vacuum were, and it does really make a difference being able to clean the dust cup automatically. It is the first time I own one of these auto-empty devices, and it was the main reason I chose it; besides the fact that I needed a light and portable yet decently powerful vacuum to carry around. With its three-level suction power, and the couple of attachments it comes with, you can use it in different areas, on floors, sofas, etc. It is light enough that you can even clean your desk with it (of course you’d need to set it in “handheld” mode). I think it does its job very well, and I also think this device deserves an easy 5/5 rating.
>> Setup
Assembling is very intuitive, unless you’ve never assembled any device, you won’t really need to inspect the manual. I only inspected the manual after the fact, to learn a few useful things, such as how to take care of this unit.
There was only one thing that looked odd, the unit hangs a little when placed in the docking station that is used for auto-empty and charging. I assume this is so to make sure that there is contact between the handheld vacuum and the docking station, so that battery can charge and also for emptying the vacuum dust cup.
>> Autodetect
Similarly to other Shark devices, at least to one other Shark vacuum I own, this one can increase or decrease power depending on the amount of material it is sucking or how dirty an area is.
It has light indicators that point out how things are going. For example, when detecting dirty areas, the light becomes red, while if all seems clean, the light turns blue.
One other interesting aspect I noticed is that when vacuuming on an edge, it could be against a wall or by the side of a sofa, for example, half of the lights illuminate towards the edge on the side/half against the edge, leaving the other side/half dark. I like this little detail. Smart indeed.
>> Battery
The unit charges when connected to the docking stand. I noticed that the battery has an input on the side that I assume you can use with some other Shark chargers. This seems handy if you lose the stand for this device, you could still use the vacuum and use a Shark charging cable to do so. I haven’t tried charging with a cable though, I don’t want to void any warranty, but I’ll try if the circumstances merit.
In addition, I wished the battery lasted longer and it charged faster. This is not a deal breaker going against purchasing one of these, though.
>> Operating modes
It has three “levels”: Save, Normal and High.
High setting is very useful for areas that have some dirt a little out of reach for the normal operation suction power and the system cannot detect. I mostly rely on the Normal setting. I’ve used the other modes a couple of times when vacuuming uneven areas.
Unlike other vacuums I own, this one doesn’t stop when in a complete upright position. Another Shark device I own would stop if it was up right. At least in my case, I find this one useful because I can easily clean the stairs while going down.
>> Keeping the unit clean
I already mentioned how attractive the auto-empty capabilities of this device are. Note that auto-empty applies to the handheld component and its dirt cup. The handheld’s dirt cup is emptied when connected to the docking station, but you still need to clean the docking storage’s dust bin, as it is there where all the debris from the auto-clean goes.

The Best Vacuum I’ve Ever Owned!

I have had the Shark Detect Clean and Empty Cordless Vacuum for a little over a week, and it is easily the best vacuum I have ever owned. There is so much to love about it, starting with the bagless design. The handheld unit has its own canister that you can empty directly into the trash. You can also place the vacuum on its base and let it automatically suck all the debris into a larger canister on the station. Not having to buy vacuum bags is a huge win. I used to hate buying them, and now that cost and hassle are gone.
Another feature I love is the hinge on the vacuum tube. It makes cleaning low or awkward spaces incredibly easy. Getting under the couch or the wine cabinets used to be a chore. Now it is simple and quick.
This vacuum is also surprisingly smart. There is a ring on both the vacuum head and the handle display that changes color to show how dirty the area is. Red means dirty, yellow means somewhat dirty, and blue means clean. It also seems to sense when you are vacuuming along a wall or edge. When it detects that, the vacuum increases power on the edge and even adjusts the headlights to illuminate the wall line more clearly. This is especially helpful under kitchen cabinets.
Eco mode is nice, but I usually stick with full power. I have a Bernedoodle that leaves puffy balls of hair everywhere and this vacuum handles them better than anything I have ever used. So far, it has picked up everything, even popcorn kernels buried in thick carpet. The self-cleaning brush is also legit. There are zero long strands of my wife's hair wrapped around the roller.
There are two filters that may need to be replaced eventually, but the cost is minimal. You can also blow them out with compressed air or rinse and dry them to extend their life. Battery performance has been excellent. I can vacuum two floors of my home on full power and still end up at about half a charge.
The vacuum also detects the type of surface it is on. I can move from wood floors to carpet to thin and thick throw rugs without pausing. The vacuum automatically adjusts power and speed depending on the surface and how dirty it is. When docked, the unit does not take up much space, so it is easy to store almost anywhere. It also looks good enough to leave out if you prefer.
The charging base has a moon button that lets you choose between charging only or charging and cleaning out the handheld canister. This model includes a couple of attachments, including a narrow tool for tight spaces and a wider one that is perfect for couches.
Overall, I absolutely love this vacuum. I have owned some very expensive, top tier models before. To be honest, this one is my favorite so far. No more bags and no more weird vacuum designs. This thing is awesome.
