Our household has, in the past utilized dyson, or electrolux vacuums (the blast from the past, sold to you at your front door variety). So when our last vacuum - a B&D who's power brush flew off during use (it died) - we wanted to explore a shark brand unit, as we have heard nothing but good things. Taking it out of the box, the first thing I noticed was the weight. It is not heavy at all! Coming in at just around 15lbs - it is not a "chore" to push/pull/carry. And don't let the weight throw you, this is a powerful unit - in fact it "sucks" better than ANY vacuum I have EVER owned. Unlike my other units, this unit has a 99.9 percent air filtration unit. Nothing that goes in is going to come out, down to the micron level. So for those with allergies, this is the vacuum for you! Further, allergy prone people with pets will love the powered pet brush, as well as the pet multi-tool. Our 2 futons (who am I kidding! Our dog's 2 futons!) are the biggest fur collectors in our home. The pet tools made easy work out of removing the fur and anything else stuck on to the 2 pieces of furniture. Amazingly, prior to this unit, I would pick up my previous vacuum and literally try to vacuum off the futons "floor style". Doing so didn't come anywhere close to the shark in its removal. As a bit of a nerd myself (we all are to a degree) I just LOVE the other attachments. Whoever came up with the "under appliance" wand - should get a medal! First I tried it under our range in the kitchen - holy smokes! Lots of stuff! Then under the fridge! So much stuff (dust/etc) was removed, I couldn't believe we had in our house. The shark also has a VERY generous cord length, that will make using it in multiple rooms no problem at all. Last but not least, this shark is actually nice to look at from a design standpoint. I know, i know.. It's a vacuum - but still! Shark left no stone unturned with this unit. If you want a vacuum that is versatile, powerful, and gosh-darn pretty - get the shark!

    This Vacuum Sucks...Real Well

Like most, I don't buy a new vacuum every day, nor do I buy $500 vacuums, however, I was not displeased by the suction of this Shark Lift-Away. We were replacing a 10yr old upright "cyclonic bagless" designed for pet owners that worked very well when we owned a cat. The cat is no longer with us and the old vacuum has continued to vacuum our carpets for the last 18+ months to our satisfaction. Imagine our surprise when we found the Shark was finding cat hair! I have no qualms about the sucking power of this vacuum. Additionally, it is a tad bit quieter than my previous bagless. It was easy and quick to assemble with no tools required. There are ample tools and ways to use this vacuum (roll it, carry it, use a giant wand, etc.). It also works better than my old upright getting under furniture assuming I separate the canister. It has 3 adjustments for carpet height/bare floor. The filters are easy to get to, and the canister is easy to separate from the unit and empty (either from the top or bottom of the receptacle). There is an extra soft brush on the front of the roller assembly that supposedly helps grab big chunks and prevent "flinging" from the standard roller when used on a wood or vinyl surface. It seems to provide that benefit in our limited use on wood floors so far. My wife is fond of the "short wand" option and likes the swivel maneuvering. She finds the grip more comfortable than older vacuums. However, there are a couple of design flaws in my opinion. First, I couldn't find the clip for the cord when vacuuming. I had to look at the manual to find the hook to keep from running over the cord. Second, this is our first swivel vacuum and I found it to be weighted awkwardly with the canister attached. With the canister attached it was also a bit difficult to maneuver on thicker carpet--so this could be a challenge for an elderly owner or someone with limited arm/wrist strength. Third, the brush rolls are not very wide. I don't know the exact measurement, but they are easily 2" shorter (if not 4") in width from what I am used to which translates into more pushing across the carpet. Finally, with all the different usage options, you need to make sure everything is snapped into place snugly or you'll be pulling out handles and tubes will be falling off. They don't just "fall out on their own" but we thought we had it all hooked back up and realized when we were done the wand wasn't properly attached. Again, very good suction for the price. Lots of useful attachments. Works well across multiple floor types. A little awkward to maneuver at first and could be a bit tricky for the elderly to handle. The optional caddy for "cannister style" would solve that issue for anyone who finds it difficult to control this vacuum.

I highly recommend this vacuum, especially for people with long hair. You can easily remove the beater bar to clean it. There is even a hair cutter/string cutter tool that snaps into its own compartment. The tool looks like a safe version of a seam ripper. A guy at a high end vacuum repair store told me they use seam rippers to get hair out. Shark thought of this and added it. This vacuum is lightweight and powerful. The lift away feature is my favorite. I can easily clean under all the beds in the house. I have carpet, tIle, and laminate floors this vacuum works seamlessly on all 3 floor types. I was going to invest 900.00 into a canister vacuum that had a removable bar..this does a great job for 1/3 of the price. I have thick carpet on some areas and it's performed well even on the thick carpet. This vacuum makes cleaning feel less like a chore!! I even dusted the blinds with it.

    This Vacuum Really Sucks!!

The Shark Powered Lift-Away Speed with DuoClean vacuum is a very powerful vacuum! I was looking for a smaller sized vacuum to use for pet hair and every day cleaning for both tile and carpet. The vacuum was easy to assemble and a smaller size than most vacuums. I like that you can change the setting from hard floors to carpet and it even has a third setting for thick carpet (area rugs). I think this is a great feature. The switch is on the handle which is a lot easier to change than my current vacuum that has it on the bottom (you have to bend down to change settings). The vacuum does a great job on my area rugs. The power on it is amazing. It literally propels itself. You just have to hold on tight! The head of the vacuum also swivels to easily go around corners and maneuver around furniture, etc. I especially like that the roller is removable. I have long hair that always gets entwined in our old vacuum. You have to cut it out with scissors. With the Shark, you can take out the roller to easily clean it if needed. The negative things that I found is the swivel head part is somewhat heavy and after extended use, my arm started to hurt a bit. You have to hold the vacuum straight and fight the powerful pull a little too, which took some getting used to. Also, the area that holds the dirt is somewhat small. With two dogs, the amount of hair filled up quickly. But, it was easy to empty which was good. I liked that both ends open so you can push out the dirt/hair if it's very full and stuck. Overall, I really like this vacuum. I probably won't use it everyday, but it will be great to get the area rugs clean and also keep up on the pet hair. We will still use our larger vacuum for large areas. The attachments are great too. I can't wait to try the one to get under appliances.

This Shark vacuum is a big improvement over the previous (old, upright, bagged) vacuum I had been using. The first time I used the Shark, it pulled up far more dust and hair than I remember my old one ever catching. On top of that, I found the "Rotator" design to be very convenient for going around corners. And, once done, disassembly was no problem, so I have no worries about cleaning the filters in the future. The multiple brushroll system (what they're calling "DuoClean") seems well-designed. The button to adjust the floor surface you're working on is right on the handle. It slides easily between 3 settings - 2 pile heights for carpeted floors, and a setting for hard floors. It's very easy to transition and keep going from one room into the next. I haven't used other Shark models, but I think this one is smaller than others. The head is definitely smaller than my old vacuum. So that means it takes a few more swipes to cover the same carpet area - but I also found the smaller size to be a lot more convenient for working around furniture. I also like the fact that the handle/wand and vacuum assembly detach from the base - very convenient for cleaning up and down stairways. It's easy to use and definitely does its job so far - just what I want from a cleaning appliance.

I had an old Bissells vacuum cleaner and it does its job fine. Can pretty much cleaner anywhere. This also cleans anywhere but it can become more compact and also can clean carpets which is great. It can be a traditional vacuum with its stick like structure or you can break it apart and have it be more portable.

The box the Shark "Powered Lift-Away" NV801 comes in says "Our most advanced upright cleaner." I believe it. It's called a "Duo Clean" because it features two rollers in its head; a standard brush roller and a second soft roller which feeds debris into the brush roller. It must work because I seldom if ever had to go over the same spot twice. It's called a "Lift Away" because if you want to vacuum under low furniture, you can "lift away" its pod and it becomes similar to a canister cleaner to reach under tight spaces where a standard upright would not allow you to do. I was impressed with the EIGHT bright LED headlights on the head which light the cleaner's path like no other I've ever seen. Included are assorted brushes including a 'pet power brush' to easily vacuum away leftover fur from your cat or dog. The 30 foot power cord means you'll have to unplug and plug in the Shark less often. Overall I was very impressed with the Shark NV801. Easily five stars.

This vacuum cleaner does it all and then some. It comes with a long flat tool that allows you to get under things like the Refrigerator and stove without moving them. Also the had tool for doing things like sofa cushions or carpeted stairs has a built in Mini Beater Bar that is powered by the actual suction and works AWESOMELY!!! About the only thing it doesn't have is an automatic cord retractor which would make this a perfect 10, But I can live with having to wind up the cord manually. Overall this is a solid built unit that is easy to keep clean and empty and will take care of carpets and hard wood floors as well. The best thing about using it on hard floors is that it never shoots the dirt around or misses any/ It Just Works!

The beater bars on this Shark vacuum are amazing. Three(3) speed selectable for carpets, loose rugs and bare floors. With modern LED headlights, the swivel head sneaked under my beds and furniture with ease. The extra long power cord makes it even easier to move from hallway to bedroom without stopping. I really like the drop bottom canister empties, and the top opens too. Glad to see the HEPA filter included. The really neat feature is the removable canister. I was able to vacuum the ceiling fans, HVAC returns and stairs with the included attachments.

The machine is three quarters the size of a full-size vacuum yet is so much easier to move. Extremely maneuverable. Works well on deep pile carpeting because it has helpful suction control so it doesn't oversuck the carpeting. Gets into nooks and crannies that other larger machines cannot. Lower profile allows machine to get under furniture. Steers easily with just wrist motion. Cord could be longer. Easy to assemble and take apart for stairs. Fills quickly thanks to our 120 pound furry dog.

I love this vacuum. I especially like the ability to use it as a canister vacuum. A lot of people complain about the small power-roller head; but, I specifically bought this vacuum for this reason. The smaller power head allows me to vacuum in between chair legs and into other tight spaces. The suction power is incredible as well. I do understand the complaint about the power button; but, the overall positives, for me, negate that issue. Some also complain that the vacuum requires a lot of effort to maneuver; but, I look at it this way: I get a great, 30-minuted upper body work-out and my floors sparkle afterwards! And, as always, BestBuy was awesome too! They price-matched other on-line vendors; so, I got a great buy with a BestBuy extened warranty.

First off I was impressed with the packaging and the ease of putting the SHARK together. Secondly, for it's size, I was very impressed with the power it had to pickup even the oddest shaped items ... paperclips, pieces of paper, etc. I especially liked how light weight it was ... I really hate bulky, heavy vacuums! What a great product!

    I Have A Collie

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I have used Shark vacuums for years, and tried just about every other brand in between. I got a Collie puppy 2 years ago, and that has made a huge difference. He is bathed and groomed about every 6 weeks, but he still has long hair. To that issue, add the fact that he and my Boxer love to bring twigs and branches into the house and chew them on the living room rugs. I know from experience that the smallest bits of twigs will still start a jam in this vacuum, and any vacuum, so I use a rubber broom before vacuuming. Every day. I got this vacuum specifically because of the claims that hair cannot accumulate on the roller, because that would be ideal, right? Well it would be, if it worked. There are two rollers - one fabric covered and one brush. No, the hair does not stick to the fabric roller at the front but it definitely DOES stick to the brush roller behind it. So in spite of using the rubber broom, my vacuum collects an incredible amount of hair on the brush and jammed beneath the fabric roller. I clean it almost once a day. Tiny bits of twig that the broom missed still gather in the pipes until at some point the vacuum shuts down. There is no warning, the green light for the roller is still on... it just stops. I have to disassemble the whole thing, clear out the tubes, put it back together and wait until it will reset itself, usually overnight. This vacuum is probably fine for someone with a short haired dog - or no dog - which is why I didn't rate it below 3 stars - but it has been a huge disappointment to me, and would be rated no more than 2 stars based solely on my circumstances. If anyone can recommend a heavy duty vacuum that really does NOT collect hair on its rollers, I'm in the market.

    Good, But Could Be Better

I have the Powered Lift Away XL Capacity Dirt Cup model, so I can do a direct comparison of these two very similar models. On the plus side, this DuoClean model has the dual soft brush & hard brush rollers, which does clean more difficult objects that typical hard-brush only models leave behind. The hose, handle release buttons, and the hose hook are improvements over previous models. This unit is indeed a little quieter as well. The onboard tool holders are a big improvement. The tools (pet hair brush and crevice / dusting tool) fit much more snugly than on other Shark models. The pet hair brush has a detachable long-bristle brush for extra-hard-to-clean pet hair. The bottom of the unit can be opened for access to the brush rollers for cleaning / maintenance. This model comes with the long wand for cleaning under furniture and appliances. The negatives: The on / off button is no longer on the handle by the carpet / hard floor switch. It is now near the top of the dirt cup. The dirt cup is smaller than before. And the bottom of the dirt cup has dust residue after emptying the cup out. Very disappointing! Also, the Pet Power Brush does NOT work on electricity as it does on the Powered LiftAway XL Cup model. It relies on suction power. It is also cheaply designed, being extremely difficult to open and close for maintenance. Overall, Shark traded some of the good features of the Powered LiftAway XL Dirt Cup model for the DuoClean brushes, better onboard tool holders, quieter performance, and easier maintenance of the brush rollers. Personally, I like the older model better, and am going to return this new DuoClean model to the store for a refund. If you own another brand, and are looking for an upgrade, and don't mind having to empty the dirt cup more often, you may like this latest Shark model very much. If you already own a Shark vacuum, depending upon the model, I suggest you look at this DuoClean model carefully before buying it online.

I have had this for a month, gave it my best, it is too difficult to move, it's top heavy, puts lots of pressure on my shoulder. The closure for the hose to snap into while using it keeps coming off, the cord needs a place higher on the handle to hold the cord. The vacuum head is too small for the weight of the canister. I love the lights, the suction, great on pet hair, being able to remove the canister with the hose from the base, but it just puts forth too much effort on a Senior's shoulder. I'm returning it, but I gave it my best shot.
