Customers are saying

Customers are delighted by the fun and detailed game, engaging story, and nostalgic elements of Shenmue III. Many appreciate the price point and the inclusion of a steel book. However, some criticisms focus on the voice acting and controls, suggesting areas for potential improvement. The open world and martial arts aspects also receive positive feedback.

This game has nothing on the first two games. Better buy those instead of this one.

It's a bad game y'all. Idk what happened. But it's just not good. Way too long, few events story-wise actually happen, just sheer torture. really.

PS3 quality graphics, outdated game design. Didn't care for the battle royale portions, or online multiplayer deathmatches.

Don’t play this if you’ve never played Shenmue. It is slow, and it’s really repetitive and slow.

Shenmue 3 really feels like shenmue 1,2 and that's not a bad thing because that's how shenmue should be. Great work from the team of shenmue, the music is so epic the sounds the voices of characters plus day and night look so beautiful, really having a great time playing shenmue 3 I'm really excited and happy about it, it's the way it should be. Thanks to everyone every person who helped shenmue 3 to become reality.

    A genuine Shenmue experience

Here are the pros and cons that I felt after played it for over 20 hours: Pros: 1. The game gives the player(especially the series fan) a genuine Shenmue experience. 2. The world the game created is is full of details. If you are a patient player which accept a leisure style of playing, you might encounter many surprises during the exploration of the world. If you are an old gamer from the 1990s, you might even find yourself addicted to some of the mini-games in the world..... 3. Shenmue 3 is also a journey of improving one's body and soul, recommended for those players that are interested in KongFu or Asian culture. Cons: 1. The graphics of the game feels like in PS3 standard, which might prevent some players of the new console generation to pick it up. 2. The story of Shenmue 3 doesn't progress much. Since Suzuki has mentioned before that the Shenmue story has 11 chapters, I guess it would take at least two more games to finish the story while Suzuki is already 61..... To sum up, as a player, one definitely have the right to criticize Shenmue 3's outdated graphics and lack of some modern open-world game features(like in Assassin Creed, GTA V, etc), but do remember that this is NOT a AAA game and the funding for Shenmue 3 is limited. So here I rated the game from a kickstarter game perspective, and I think in this perspective, Shenmue 3 does live up to the expectations of most of the series fans by providing a genuine Shenmue experience. PS: Suppose one is asked to rate the three games which come out recently: Death Stranding(abbreviated as "DS"), Pokemon Sword and Shield(as "PokeSS) and Shenmue 3(as "Sh3"). A hard core gamer might rate them as follows: DS: 9/10, PokeSS: 7/10, Sh3: 8/10. A serious game media might rate them as follows: DS: 6/10, PokeSS: 4/10, Sh3: 5/10. A "generous" game media might rate them as follows: DS: 9/10, PokeSS: 10/10, Sh3: 9/10. I believe for a normal person or game media, the rating standard for games should be consistent. Guess how IGN's ratings for the three games are? It turns out to be as follows: DS: 6.8/10 PokeSS: 9.3/10 Sh3: 5.9/10 It's so inconsistent and almost felt like it was rated by a lunatic to me. How shameful!

Good if you've played Shenmue before

This literally picks up where the screen fades to black in #2. Like if you finished Shenmue II on one system then changed inputs to a PS4 with Shenmue III ready to go, you would literally just be walking from the Dreamcast version of the cave to a more polished, shinier version. And that's the whole game. It's the same game as 18 -19 years ago just with a graphical boost from modern consoles. I mean, it's not a bad thing - it's a relaxing game. Ryu still walks stiff as a board. He still gets hyper-fixated on any new tidbit of info and abandons the last line of questioning. "Have you seen any thugs?" is the new "Do you know where I can find sailors?" It's the same VA for Ryu, sounding much the same as he did nearly 2 decades ago, so we're still treated to "Excuse me... I see.... Really?" There's capsules to buy, forklifts to drive, Lucky Hit is back as well as a whole new host of g̶a̶m̶b̶l̶i̶n̶g̶ venture games including frog and turtle racing. They are essentially the same but as expected, the frog races go much faster. You can also pick herbs, chop wood and fish to earn money. There's a Seek & Find mini-game in the second half of the story that I really enjoyed. The game is gorgeous, no doubt about that. It takes place in two areas which are both quite large. The first area has fast travel and the second area which is much bigger, does not for some reason. There are also some odd "no running" zones in the second area which serve no purpose I could see and are just plain annoying. Shenhua and Ryu are able to have optional conversations in the evenings and if you have any interest learning more about the characters, I encourage you to keep Ryu interacting with her in the village area. Once you change areas, the structure of the conversations changes and they aren't as long. About the time you're wondering where the familiar QTEs of previous installments are, they make a reappearance. And they pop up FAST. Like fast enough to the point I failed Every. Single. One. Half a second longer on the QTE and I wouldn't have had a problem as I always hit the button as the timer was up. It's basically a memory game in Shenmue III - fail and note the button, repeat for all new buttons in the sequence. Training kung-fu is MUCH easier this time around.
