Not What I Thought It Was

I am really disappointed in this product. My goals were a little different than most in that I was looking for less outside security and more inside security. I have children with Special Needs that like to go outside when they aren’t supposed to, and do not have the normal aversion to danger. I wanted a system that would alert me to the doors being opened and the normal security features would be a bonus. My understanding, though it may have been an error on my part, was that you could use this product without paying for additional monitoring. I opened the box to find the base tower, a motion sensor (which I have yet to install), four entry alarms, signs with stakes, and misc. parts. I would never use the signs, so I feel these are a waste. I plugged in the base and installed three of the entry sensors. I followed the instructions for set up, which are easy to understand. However, where I ended up running into problems is the wireless set up. I have a mesh wi-fi system. The keypad (on which you perform the set up) would show my internet connections (both bandwidths, which it labeled [my network name]A and [my network name]B). When I would put in my password, though, I would get a message saying that my password was incorrect. I tried both bandwidths, and received the same error. I thought maybe it was a network issue, so I decided to try again later. It still didn’t work. I verified my network password in the admin functions of my network and it was still not correct, per the unit. I tried troubleshooting online with little luck. The only answer that I thought was applicable to my situation was to change the name of my network. When I tried to do this, I received a message from my network software that all 26 of my connected devices would be bumped offline. I didn’t want to take the time to reconnect 26 devices, so I didn’t try that. The app is of no help unless you are a subscriber. The fees run $15/month (basic) and $25/month. You must subscribe to the $25/month plan to be able to use the app and control remotely. The most disappointing aspect of the experience, though, was their Customer Service. I called for assistance and spoke to “Anna”. Anna sounded less than thrilled to be taking my call. I explained my issue with the unit. She asked me for information to look up my account. I said that I didn’t have an account yet (I hadn’t got that far in the process). Her reply was, “Well, how am I supposed to know what you have if you don’t have an account?” I had the serial number from the unit in hand, but I wasn’t asked for it. I was put on mute repeatedly (I could tell as the call center was very noisy) and was told that, if I didn’t have an account, she couldn’t help me. I became frustrated and hung up. The positives of this unit are many, aside from my poor experience. The entry alarms, while not actually turned on, are active and will chime anytime a door is opened. The unit is attractive and doesn’t stick out in our décor. The instructions were easy to understand and follow until I ran into my issues. I would recommend this product if you were looking to subscribe to the service at $25/month. That is the only way that I see you would be able to take advantage of the unit’s full functionality.

I have spent countless hours over the last two weeks trying to get this terrible system to work I have spent over 9 hours on hold trying to get resolve through SimpliSafe. They have sent out replacements and replacement models. Not sure what they were for. Didn't even look like the same thing when they sent it. SimpliSafe, Best Buy, and Geek Squad have given me the run around for 2 weeks now. At least Best Buy allowed me to exchange the sytem today. Sadly when I got it home, it still did the same crap and says I need an upgrade for Monitoring. I DO NOT RECOMMEND. Especially for the amount of money that is wasted on a product that does not produce.

excellent upgrade over the previous system

So, should you upgrade from the older system to the newer one? If you have a few hundred dollars, absolutely!! This new system is lightyears ahead of the old one. Everything from setup to use to build quality is sooo much better. So far, no connection issues between any of the sensors and the base. With the older system I would have some connection issues with either a keypad or an entry sensor. So far, this system is rock solid. Setup: Even easier than before. You click a button on the sensor and the keypad asks you to name it based on commonly used names (garage, patio etc.). It took me all of 5 minutes to completely set up the new system. Using the app, all I had to do was transfer my current account to the new basestation, VERY easy. The test call went out perfectly and very quickly, I struggled with this with my other system. Use: The keypad is very solid, backlit and high end looking. Response time is very fast and it recognizes every button press. You can adjust most settings on the keypad itself, or you can use the website or app on your phone to adjust settings. Temporary pins are very easy to add for dog walkers etc. While it sucks that it is not backwards compatible...it a way I'm glad its not because this system fixes a lot of the communication issues that at the previous version of the system had. This also is able to use WiFi as a secondary connection along with cellular to ensure a solid connection to the call center. In the end. If you can afford it, totally upgrade, it is a MUCH nicer system. The looks alone might make it worth it as the keypad looks like a ferrari compared to the older one, and the door/window sensors are much smaller.

    Even Better than Before

Initial setup took less than 3 minutes. The keypad guides you step by step. No hassle. Even easier than the previous model (second generation). Even connecting to Wi-Fi was a breeze and you do not have to do anything about the built-in cell phone. The whole installation, including keypad on the wall and sensors took literally 16 minutes. It is that easy. If you move to another house, just take it with you because it is not much harder to undo it. As to appearance, this model (third generation) looks much better than the previous one which had a cheap plastic appearance. This one is still plastic but does not look bad at all. All the sensors are much smaller and the keypad looks much nicer too. The screen could only look better if it was color but it is clear and bright, and the text is extremely easy to read. All the keys light up too. No external lights needed. One of the features that I loved in the previous model was that you could choose PINs for different needs or persons and you still can with this one. For instance, you can have your main PIN to control the alarm and change settings, another to call the police silently in case somebody forces you to turn the alarm off, and a few others to give to somebody who needs access to your house but should not be able to make changes to the system. The other nice feature is the voice feedback from the base station. Having the flexibility of placing the base station wherever you want is a big bonus. The siren is much louder and the motion sensor can really tell the difference between a person and a pet. That is a great feature for anyone who has any kind of pet. Whether you pay the recommended 24/7 monitoring service or just decide to use it only as a scare-away-burglar device, it is a great system. My only disappointment is that the sensors are not compatible with the previous generation. I have a few of those but unfortunately, they are useless with this one. That is a pity for those considering an upgrade. Last time I gave it a 4-star rating because of the plastic look and I was tempted to do the same based on compatibility with the second generation but as most people are buying this for the first time, I will give it 5 stars because of all the improvements.

    Great Company

I, in no way, have been incentivized to write this review. I am simply writing this due to my overall experience with SimpliSafe. I have been a client of SimpliSafe for more than 10 years now. I believe we came on board as clients when SimpliSafe was only a couple of years old as a company. My wife and I were looking for a reasonable security system that didn't require extensive upfront costs and/or lengthy contracts. We had experiences with other security providers, but at a time when finances were tight and we wanted to protect our family, we landed on SimpliSafe. SimpliSafe had a reasonable monthly monitoring cost, no contract, and I could purchase as much or as little equipment as I needed. I believe we spent $400 when we first signed up. That price covered all our doors, motion sensors, glass break sensors, sirens, and two keypads. If I needed to reduce the type of monitoring I needed, I could do this at any point. I also had lifetime coverage on my equipment. In 2019, we had a house fire, which devastated our family. If you’ve ever experienced this, it really shakes your life. The entire process of trying to restore your home is laborious, and it is almost impossible to get your house back to where it was without spending more money. When I contacted SimpliSafe to replace our damaged equipment, they sent us an entirely new system at no cost!! You can’t imagine what this meant when we were having to deal with replacing all our possessions. In 2024, I purchased two used cameras from a third party to add to my existing system. Unfortunately, the original owner had not removed them from their account, and I could not use them. When I contacted SimpliSafe to see if they could help me, they made it super simple and sent me two cameras to replace the defective ones I had purchased. They didn’t have to do this. It wasn’t their responsibility to fix cameras that I didn’t buy directly from them, but they did. They send a moving kit when we relocate, their customer support via text or phone is always readily available, they look for ways to expand their technology, and they make it super simple for us to remain as clients. I can remember when they were working to release their first camera. It did take some time, but the quality was worth the wait. I can’t recommend SimpliSafe enough.

Unlike some other security devices that offer free but basic limited service I could not figure out how to sign up other than pay with a plan they had you select from. Nothing in the installation was their an option to install camera or any equipment for free limited service.

Do you need security and reliable equipment? Look somewhere else because this is not it. Alerts barely get to your phone in due time, chimes from the sensors stop working and you’ll need to open the base and power cycle the battery multiple times to get them back to work. You just can’t trust the reliability of this equipment to protect your home or business.

This system was incredibly easy to install. I think it took me longer to unbox it than actually have it up and running....well it was close. Included in the box was the main unit, a keypad, 4 entry sensors, a 3ft yard sign, window stickers, and a motion sensor. You can put the keypad anywhere since it is wireless as well. I put it by my garage door since my wife and I always park in the garage and come thru that way. I plan on adding an additional keypad for our master bedroom. Its nice since it has a panic button on the top of it. I ended up using the double sided sticky tape to mount everything for now. I did have a sensor fall off of the door frame, but my door frames are rounded a bit and are not totally flat. At some point i might just screw them into place. Simplisafe does include additional sticky tape and screws for mounting. This is a nice system since you can attach it to your wi-fi and it also has built in cellular connection for the monitoring service, which is 24/7. The alarm when it goes off is not too loud so don't expect your neighbors to hear it, but it will most likely scare someone away. Also, I have 3 small dogs (under 15 lbs each) and the motion sensor is not set of by them while the system is armed. The great news about this is when you need to add a sensor (leak, freezing, motion, smoke detector, etc) they are very reasonably priced. Motion sensors are (at the time of writing) $15 and motion are $30.

The “help” when you call is confused and poorly trained on how to “trouble shoot” and on what the system actually does/doesn’t do! Also the system was found to be much cheaper at Costco after already purchasing! The stickers are not adequate to keep on the doors and the sensors with “malfunction” aka “off line” when you would like to see what is occurring.

The SimpliSafe – Protect Home Security System is a versatile home security system, that even the most novice of users can setup quickly and easily. What I love most about the system though, is that you can either pay to have it professionally monitored, OR, you can monitor is yourself from your cell phone. Self-monitoring is all that I need, as I always have my cell phone, and saving the monthly fee is great compared to other alarm systems. The SimpliSafe – Protect Home Security System comes with 4 door, window, garage door, or other methods of entry sensors, a keypad to arm/disarm the system, a motions sensor, and the base station. You can also buy additional sensors, key fobs, etc. from the company to expand your coverage. Finally, you can rest easy, as the SimpliSafe – Protect Home Security System has its own battery, meaning that even if there is a major power failure, the system will continue to monitor your property for up to 24 hours.

The sensors are added to the wall using Velcro, they keep falling off. The unit pad is also a Velcro material, we keep finding it off the floor and on the wall . The signal they say doesn’t carry up two floors yet every other device works. Tried calling Best Buy , no look with this corona virus around. I want to return this pile of plastic and Velcro and get something more sturdy.

I purchased the SimpliSafe system to integrate with my home network with the belief that by connecting with my cell phone and network, that I would be notified if an alarm was triggered. Come to find out I have to purchase a monitoring contract from SimpliSafe in order for it to work properly. I guess this was a shortcoming on my part for not reading thoroughly, but I also feel there is a clear misrepresentation on the company's part and product's capability.
