This was never explained to me before I purchased it, or I never would have bought it and paid my handyman to install it for me, since I have a digital doorbell. This info should be printed on the box it comes in. I am thankful to Best Buy for accepting my return. I don't know how to rate this item.

I was looking for something that would be great for an Apartment. Other than that I would recommend because I bought solely cause a friend had it.

Posted .Thanks for the feedback! Yes, this current model is intended to install over an existing wired doorbell system. But our engineers continue to work on improving our offerings.
For apartments, the SimpliCam Security Camera might be a better fit. While it does still require an outlet, it can be fitted with an Outdoor Kit - so it can be placed outside to watch over your doorstep.

I'm overall happy with it but it could be better.

I had 2 issues... first, hardware required a reset twice in first week after losing connectivity... after that it worked great... the second issue I could not overcome was its poor notifications... the motion sensor, & more importantly the doorbell ring uses the default tone on your phone... the same as any text email or other notification... the doorbell NEEDS to be different... not once was I able to catch someone ringing the bell because of this... I returned it, and bought a Ring II
