Did not know this is $60 a year when Ring is $30. It could have been the installer but the picture was gray, black & white. No color at all and has no choices like Ring so I went back to Ring. My rating is by my experience you might want to try it yourself. It get's good ratings from others.

Posted .Sorry to hear about your experience. The Video Doorbell Pro can be set up as a standalone unit, with livestreaming and Push Notifications at no additional cost. We do have a Recording plan available for unlimited recordings in the cloud.
It sounds like your camera might have been set to Night Vision mode, which automatically switches on when there's very low light - but it can also be turned on permanently in the settings. But during the daytime, the image should be in full color.

Great Product but horrible customer support

Buyer beware that installing this device may not be as easy as the videos show. The device is now working well but required 2 trips to Home Depot and 2 calls to customer support. Bottom line, this device is not compatable with digital chimes! This fact would have saved hours if they told me that! Everything I learned was from the internet research I did myself to solve the installation issues. Thank God we have U-Tube and chat lines which customers told how they overcame various issues. Overall it was about 5 hours to get it up. Their other products were easy to install.

Reinstalled Ring doorbell and returned SimpliSafe doorbell. Just wanted my doorbell to be on the alarm system also.

Ok until it breaks

Everything was working fine until I had to recently update the wifi to a new wifi SSID/password. Unfortunately the doorbell won't read the QR code. Support said they would have to replace the device. HOWEVER, because I purchased it through a "third party, i.e. BestBuy" and unless I have an extended warranty with BestBuy and because I don't have the paid services with Simplisafe, they will not issue a replacement device. So the tl;dr is: 1. The audio is hit or miss if you try to do the 2-way communication (most of the time the people on the other end can't hear me). 2. It's app only, meaning you will have to buy another device if you want a chime without the app. 3. You apparently need to purchase their service to get any type of manufacturers warranty. The last one is a deal breaker to me as smart homes shouldn't require their consumers to pay for their service.

Decent doorbell camera with room for improvement
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.The doorbell camera arrived neatly packed, it felt quality, there were no missing parts. Instructions were easy to follow. Overall impression was of a refined if somewhat delicate product (for a thing to be installed outside and open to the weather elements). I was installing the doorbell on the brick wall, had to drill a hole in the brick in irder to install the doorbell. To install the doorbell first you attach the base plate directly to the wall, then you slide in the actual doorbell into that plate. For my brick wall the process of sliding the doorbell unto the base plate proved to be a little bit of challenge as the brick wall is not as even as siding wall for example. Since the base plate is relatively thin, some of the uneven surfaces of the brick wall were getting in the way of me trying to slide the doorbell onto it. I had to loosen the base plate installation screw somewhat in order to create enough space for the doorbell to fully slide in into the base plate. Once the doorbell slid in, I heard the voice from the doorbell instructing me to follow the installation from the app. Installed the app, created an account and then the next step was to connect to my WIFI. Since my phone was connected at that time to the 5G network, the app selected the 5G network during the process even though the same screen says that the system only works on 2G (not 5G). I had to manually select one of my 2G networks for the process to continue. The app displayed the code which I pointed toward the doorbell camera and the camera was added to the app, end of the install. You can select a $5 monthly service if you want to have the video recordings preserved, which are stored for 1 month into the Simplisafe cloud. Without that $5 service no recordings are stored anywhere (including your device like phone or tablet/iPad), you only get live camera view. The motion sensor has 3 levels of sensitivity. Initially I selected the highest level, but with that any time a vehicle drove by my street (without anybody approaching the door) the camera would record and send me an alert that the camera was on. Once i switched to the medium level that stopped, the camera would only be triggered by people coming to my door (not by the vehicular movement on my street). The quality of the video is okay, but not superb. During daytime it is somewhat fluid (definitely does not look full HD though it is decent) but you should be able to recognize people that you know. The night vision seems just average. If the person does not move, it is okay, but with the movement it becomes quickly quite blocky to the point that you might not be able to see the person clearly. Be also aware that while the horizontal angle of view is very decent, the vertical angle is not so much. In our case I was not able to see an entire face for an average height male standing relatively close to the door (2 feet) as the top portion of his head would be cut off. At the same time his feet would also be out of view cut off at the bottom. Another challenge is that while the horizontal angle is quite wide, the doorbell does not come with a base plate adjustment for corner installations, meaning that if your doorbell is away from the door and to the side facing forward, the oppositie side of the door away from where the doorbell is installed might not be entirely captured by the camera. The sound quality for the microphone is good. Keep in mind that there is a slight delay (about 1 second or so) between what is recorded and what is shown and that also applies to the sound. For all the practical purposes this doorbell works for me. Has the adjustable motion detector, night vision (even if not entirely perfect), reliable notification system, comes with a microphone so I can converse with the person at the door through the app and offer the ability to store the video recordings via the optional $5 monthly service. Overall, I am happy with it, though I would wish a side angle base plate would be offered, the vertical view angle would be somewhat wider and the picture quality improve a little (especially for the night vision). A very solid first attempt from Simplisafe with room for future improvement. For me it works for what it is intended. A good acqusition.

The thought of having the same provider felt right. Unfortunately the doorbell camera is just not on par with Ring. The coverage is choppy. Most of the time the camera was disconnected. Missed notifications because it was off line. I returned and went with Ring. It’s just better.

Good hardware, bad execution
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Simplisafe has been improving their products significantly over the last year or so and have become a strong competitor in the home security market. As I've said in my review of their home security system, I believe their products are really only for very small homes, townhomes, condos. I really don't believe they are well-suited for anyone with a larger home except when it comes to this doorbell cam (sort of). They designed a good product with seemingly good hardware but they've poorly executed many things, such as the subscription plan and mounting/power options. It's important to remember that there're many options available in the doorbell cam market right now. SimpliSafe is the newest and offers the option of a complete package with its home security system. It really seems like they forced this product to be integrated into their full ecosystem and almost renders the doorbell cam completely useless without having that home security system. Having to pay $5/month to use this camera out of the box is absolutely ridiculous. Five dollars may not sound a lot money, however if you were to compare this two other competitors that at least offer some level of a free package, this device comes out to be significantly more cost. You'd be adding $60 a month to the cost of ownership of this device. Therefore, I cannot recommend this product to anyone that does not have the SimpliSafe home security system (with a monitoring plan) and plans on keeping it for a long time. As for the nuts and bolts of the device itself, it's sleek, looks good, and small. It would have been nice to have seen a recessed mount option that no other door bell camera manufacture has to offer yet, but that would've been really forward thinking. It would have also been useful to have a Mount to angle the camera left or right up to 90°. Many homes have the doorbell mounted 90° or perpendicular to the actual door so you're not going to get that straight shot that you're looking for. If you have an existing doorbell, the set up is truly easy and takes no time at all. All you need to do is swap out a plate and connect some wires. Connecting it to the network was fairly simple and straightforward. Overall time from un-boxing to live stream on my phone was about 20 minutes. The app itself as leave some to desire however as long as it can give me a live feed in relatively real-time, I don't have any complaints. When testing on my local network and faraway, the quality was good and the response time what's acceptable but not great compared to my much higher resolution security cameras. Overall, SimpliSafe needs to improve the app in connection speeds. Video quality and resolution during daytime was good enough to identify faces as long as you have the camera low and use the included wedge to angle upwards. It's important to realize that many thieves wear hoodies or hats and try to keep their head low to keep cameras from above getting their faces. If you mount this camera a little bit lower and using upward angle you're more likely to capture a clear shot of peoples face. In a well lit it area, the camera does a good job with its night vision. It is difficult to get very good nighttime video on almost any camera. That is why it's really important to have proper lighting where you have the camera mounted. It didn't great job in my situation in and area that was well lit. Pros: Video quality Ease of installation Look Size SimpliSafe home security integration (if you happen to own one) Cons: Subscription service Free service is basically nothing Lack of additional mounting hardware No back up battery Limited bezels Overall, I do not recommend this to anyone who does not have a SimpliSafe Home security system (with monitoring plan). Yes it is a good device, but SimpliSafe has fell short in many important aspects of this device. The cost of ownership is completely not worth it compared to competitors. Until SimpliSafe decides to offer a free service that has a decent amount of cloud recording included (7 days), there is no use having this product without paying $5/month.

Not at all reliable. If you're already paying for SimpliSafe, it might be worth it.

This doorbell is embarrassing being it will not work most of the time people are at your door. It takes so long to go to video when someone rings the doorbell. I hate this purchase.
