Sounds great , when it works

The week of Thanksgiving my wife and I bought this soundbar and a new Sony 4K TV ( XBR-65X850D). We hooked it up and it has been working fine for the first month or so. Occasionally though when the TV is on the output does not go to the soundbar. The soundbar is hooked to the ARC HDMI on the TV (HDMI4) and the correct HDMI port on the soundbar A few weeks ago I picked up another video component and plugged that HDMI cable into the TV (HDMI 3), that really messed the soundbar up. I'm not sure how the ARC (Audi return CHannel) works but having 2 HDMI inputs used on the TV (1 for Cable, and one for my new HDMI device) really messes up the soundbar. It just doesn't product any sound. Not sure if it doesn't know which device to use. I ended up having to unplug the new devices HDMI cable when not in use so the TV only sees one HDMI device. That helped a bit but still 20% of the time when I turn the TV on, no TV sound comes through the soundbar. I was confused as to if the TV is at fault here or if it is the soundbar. But I found out this NO SOUND problem can usually be fixed by un-plugging the soundbar from the wall, waiting 20 seconds, and plugging it back in so I'm pretty sure it's the soundbar. I checked for a software update on the soundbar a couple of weeks ago and there was one, so I updated it. The problem still persists. There is not software update for my TV yet. I finally gave up on the HDMI ARC type of connection and used the Optical one. That worked well except when I adjust the volume on the TV, it does't change the soundbar, which means we have to use the sound bar control in addition to the TV remote. Just today I reset the soundbar to factory settings and set it up again using the HDMI cable into the ARC HDMI port and removed the OPitcal cable. We'll see what happens.

This soundbar is awesome. I had a 5.1 channel system that I replaced with this one and dare to say that this sounds better with only the soundbar and sub. The detail in the highs and mids is awesome. The bass is just enough without being overpowering and if you play with the settings, you can get more out of it.

Even with the breakneck pace of innovation, I am totally satisfied with this soundbar. The sound quality is as good as I need. It adds enjoyment to movies, music, and TV shows. I wish it offered better Apple compatibility, but that was not available in any soundbar at the time. We can work around via Bluetooth and other connectivity.

This soundbar gave me what I wanted

This powered soundbar gave me what I wanted when I decided to upgrade to a 4K UHD system, great wireless surround sound and an uncluttered room. It let me get rid of my old video receiver and piles of speaker wire. Now I just have HDMI cables from my cable box and blue ray player plugged into the Sony soundbar, and one HDMI cable connecting the HDMI ARC on the soundbar with HDMI ARC on my TV. How easy is that? Some people say the quality of the audio from a soundbar is not good, but this soundbar system, with its wireless remote base and two surround rear speakers (the two rear speakers I purchased separately) gives me high quality sound for movies and sports with a small speaker footprint in the room, as the base is behind the couch against a wall and the two surround sound rear speakers are small and unobtrusive. I used a soundbar mount to attach the Sony soundbar to my Sony TV, so the front speakers are always pointing in the optimal direction., And the bluetooth connectivity with the soundbar is easy to set up and reliable to use. I'm glad to be done with video receiver, large speakers in the room, and the speaker wire that went with them. I never used the radio tuner in my receivers as the signals were never good enough for where my unit was. And nowadays, we have myriad options for streaming radio over bluetooth that the Sony soundbar will handle when I am ready to deploy them.

Replaced an order 5.1 high quality system with this. Tired of the wires and clutter. Was skeptical that I would get the same quality. Currently don't have the speakers for the rear but will add them. The sound from the Sound Bar and sub woofer is Awesome. Couldn't be more please with the Best Buy rep for suggesting the Sony Sound Bar HT T5.

I am very pleased with the performance of the sound bar. Just make sure the instructions and setup are followed in order to make sure it is set up to your personal needs. Make sure you understand the functions of all HDMI I/O within your system and how they will interact with your personal settings. Well worth it.

Everything I wanted in a soundbar

I was considering buying the Bose system, but didn’t want to spend over a thousand for the entire setup. This Sony system not only has amazing clarity, but also provides substantial bass. It is literally everything I wanted out of a soundbar. Setup was super easy and Bluetooth connectivity is also definitely an added bonus. The remote is compact, but not small enough to where I feel like I’m going to lose it. It has different sound field settings clear, music, movie, etc that adjust to the media you are going to currently play. Glad I did my research, this was a well worth purchase. I was skeptical buying a soundbar retailed at $800 and didn’t think spending more was necessarily going to make a substantial difference in audio quality, but after listening to it I could tell that you get what you pay for. As a side note, it’s also a very compact soundbar and is sleek.

    Great sound, lousy controls

I purchased this unit to go along with a Sony Bravia XBR75X850D. Sony brags about Bravia Sync and I have an older Sony 46" with a Blu Ray and Sound system in another room that work great together. You'd think with both the Sony TV and the HTNT5 being 2016 models that they would be compatible. Nope. The TV doesn't support this model (or the slightly less expensive HTCT790 either). ARC doesn't work when a cable set top box is plugged in, so you're stuck using digital audio, which wouldn't be too bad if you didn't still have to use the AV remote to control the sound volume. I guess I should be writing this review on the Sony TV since it is what does not recognize the AV unit. Anyway, the sound is great when the cable connection is removed and playing through the HDMI connections. I'm very disappointed I could not keep this since the sound was so good. I returned it to Best Buy for a HTCT790, thinking maybe the lower model would at least be recognized by the TV. Nope, same issue, only now I have a unit that doesn't sound as nice. This is going back to Best Buy as well.

Hi Mark. We are glad to hear you enjoy the great sound quality of the HT-NT5. We understand you purchased this sound bar with the XBR-75X850D and would like to connect a cable set top box to the Sony 4K TV.

Please verify the following steps are completed to help enable BRAVIA Sync:
      1. Connect a passive HDMI cable from HDMI 4 (ARC) on the TV to the HDMI Out (ARC) of the HT-NT5.
      2. As for the cable set top box, please connect this to any remaining HDMI port, 1-3, on the TV via HDMI cable.
      3. Please verify that the cable set top box remote is programmed to work with a Sony TV – varies upon service provider
      4. Now, with the Sony-provided TV remote, Press “Action Menu”, scroll down and select “Speakers”
      5. Verify that “Audio System” is selected.

We hope that these steps help you enable BRAVIA Sync. Please don’t hesitate to contact us at 800-222-7669 to speak with a representative about this. We are glad to help you remedy this concern.

Honestly, I was skeptical at first. But this sound bar won me over. Most of you may hear this sound bar in a Best Buy store. Which is a huge room with a high ceiling. But this sound bar has an high res audio upscaler that improves my movies and music that I cast to the device. It's great for someone like me that watches a lot of movies and listens to a lot of music.

This is a good sound bar but limited! For the money I spend as far as 700$ there should be more settings in audio especially bass and treble settings for the sound bar not just the sub. Great for music ok for movies. When music plays on a sounds amazing but when it's just words does not do any better than my ct770. When I paid a lot more than I did for my ct770 it should sound amazing on amazing the whole way threw!!

    "Please Wait"

I am a very pleased Best Buy customer. I have had much success with my purchases there however I am very upset with this Sony Product. I purchased this 11/2016 and within 5 months it stopped working. It was still within warranty so Sony had me send it in for repair. I was not happy with the process because I was without a sound bar for 3 weeks. When it came back I was pleased that it was working again. BUTTT!!!! Just a couple days ago, exactly 1 year after purchase , it bugged out again. It takes forever to turn on. I see the "please wait " message and when it turns on the home menu won't work and there is no sound. I called Sony again and they told me they would see if they could honor another repair since it was just barely out of Warranty. Pending their response. I don't see myself personally buying or recommending anyone a Sony sound bar. Horrible Experience

I've only owned this soundbar for 3 months and have had constant problems with it. While watching TV, it just looses all sound. This will happen several times a day. The only way to make the sound come back is to shut it off and then back on. It also takes a long time to get any sound out of it when I first turn it on. The rear wireless speakers also keep losing their connection with the main soundbar. I purchased this as a match to my new Sony 4K 55' TV and paid over $700 for it. I guess price isn't a factor on quality.

Do not buy this soundbar if you want to buy the zr5 speakers and create full surround. This system has been the biggest waste of money and wasn't worth the headache. The system keeps needing me to disconnect the surround and reconnecting it through the app for it to work. I hate this thing.

Just had my new tv and this soundbar installed to replace an age old 300$ home theater system and 10 year old plasma tv. I have to say I am very disappointed. I was curious and turned this 800$ system up as loud as it can go and it is no where near as loud as my old system was at half volume. Granted, it gets loud enough to to enjoy a movie but this thing should crank 2-3 times as loud as it gets. I can't believe I paid this much for a system that doesn't blow my socks off let alone not need to be turned down ever. I am typing this as my wife sleeps upstairs like a baby while I watch game of thrones at full volume. Disappointed

Hi Steve, We would like to ensure that you have a great experience with your new HTNT5 sound bar. May we suggest a few quick setting changes that should enhance your experience?
      1. Change the VOICE setting to 2.
      2. Increase subwoofer to level 10 or higher.
      Directions to make recommended changes:
There are designated buttons on the sound bar remote that will assist you in quickly and easily making these adjustments.
      1. To change the VOICE setting, press the VOICE button on the remote until you see the UP 2 setting on the display of the sound bar.
2.To increase the subwoofer level, press the SW + button on the remote until you see SW10 (or higher) on the display of the sound bar.

This is by far the worst sound system that you can come across!! The volume is extremely weak, i mean so weak that i’m sure a decent boombox is louder. Connectivity issues all the time and you have to unplug it and plug back in to solve the problem. Thank god for the insurance because this thing is going back!!! Do not waste your money there are better sound systems out there for cheaper. Oh and sony’s customer service is laughable at best. They wont help.

Needs to be updated to match specs of current TV's

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Best Buy is advertising this Sound Bar with the current line-up of Sony 4K TVs. In fact, they are hooked up to the Sony 4K TVs in my local Best Buys stores. The problem is that the current Sony 4K TVs they are hooked up to pass video at a 4k HDR with 120hz FPS refresh rate. When I contacted Sony Support they confirmed that this sound bar only passes through a 60hz video refresh rate. So if you buy a new Sony 4K HDR TV with a 120hz refresh rate and connect the HDMI/video through this sound bar to manage your video/audio experience you are actually degrading your video quality by half to only 60hz. So you are paying for a 120hz video experience and not getting the full benefits of the 120hz frame rate. This is a significant fail from Sony (I don't blame Best Buy) since they are promoting a discount on this sound bar when buying a Sony TV, many with a 120hz refresh rate. Most people probably will not catch this issue and they will spend the extra money on this sound bar and think they are getting a great deal. The lesson of the day is: When it comes to technology, pay attention to the details! Every aspect of your system has to be at the same minimum level (TV, Stereo, DVD or video game system, cables, etc) or you are not getting what you are paying for in the end. Ask the questions BEFORE you spend the money.
