Bright spots after only a DAY
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Well what can I say? I owned the TV for a day, and it was working well. However, about an hour ago I had to do a couple things so I turned off the TV. 20 minutes later I came back, turned it on and boom, 5 bright spots across my screen. I've attached a photo of one, tho it may be hard to see as I took it with my phone. The brighter the screen the more the spots stand out.

Stellar overall performance,but.....
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The moment I set up the display I was struck by the overall esthetic. The X830C has a gunmetal bezel with a brushed metal ribbon on either side of the display. The chrome Sony logo and pulsating LED indicator make for a very high end,yet understated design. Now that that is out of the way let's get to the heart and soul of the TV,picture quality. I fired up my PS4 and began to put it through its paces with a slew of movies and video games. I started with one of my favorite Marvel/Disney movies Captain America which at 1080p is a visual feast, but with the X1 processor the level of detail is astounding. From the church scene at the beginning with Tree of life mural which held more detail than I had ever notice during prior viewing. The sharpness and detail can not be overstated, but the 120hz panel with some other wizardry make for a fantastic movie experience. Moving onto games I tried out a few of my favorite to show of what the PS4 has to offer from a visual standpoint The order:1886 and Infamous:First light. This was my first hint that something may be slightly amiss with the overall picture quality. The games are very contrast heavy games that take place in the dark city streets of London or the rain soaked streets of Seattle. The colors were vibrant and the detail was apparent, but overall the images were a little flat. Now comes the next part of my review a little tech. The X830C while part of the flagship line of XBR displays it lack the triluminous display or any full array backlight with local dimming scheme outside the frame (global) dimming found on other manufacturers display. The major difference between full array local dimming and global dimming is about precision. While a global dimming display raises and lowers the backlight over the entirety of the screen for imprecise and sometimes distracting pumping of the backlight. A local dimming display breaks the LED's illuminating the rear of the screen into zones that can be controlled independently giving you a deeper image that found on hose without. Sony has also decided to employ and LG IPS based screen which have been known for fantastic color reproduction and viewing angles, but generally poor black lever performance or contrast. The result of this is usually a very flat image where darker areas have a grey tinge to them and occasionally the IPS glow. I have purchased a 6500k rated bias light to help with picture adjustment and perceived contrast, but can't get the desired result I am looking for. The image either ends up washed out or so dark the blacks clip losing all shadow detail leaving you with pools of black. These are things that some consumers will likely never notice, but coming from a VA (vertical alignment) panel based TV that can offer 4x the static contrast of an IPS panel this is quite noticeable. This all sounds very negative, but as I said some of this will never be noticed by the average consumer. Let's move onto some of the other positive so found with the X830C with its Android based Smart platform. I made sure I had updated the firmware first of all to ensure I was getting all performance enhancements that have occurred since its launch. The interface was snappy and streaming was flawless with everything I threw at this thing. Whether it were Netflix,Hulu or HBO now I saw no delay in streaming or artifacts. Full disclaimer I am also running Google fiber with around 75/75mbps up and download speeds. My impressions overall is that Sony has checked a lot of boxes on my wish list, but the choice to use an IPS panel may end up being the deciding factor for me. Do I take the 80% positive about the TV and keep it or is the 20% negative enough to try another display?
