Sony has done it again. I just purchased this TV after my 7 yr old plasma crapped out. I first bought the LG 4K model and returned it less than a week later. Got this sony and could not be any happier. Amazing colors and blacks. The up convert to 4K from Comcast channels is amazing. it truly does a fantastic job at making 720/1080P content so much better. set up was not that bad and the android interface has worked flawless for me. Love the apps that come with this tv for streaming 4K movies and shows.

I just bought this tv less than a week ago, so I'm only writing as to my first impressions, but so far I'm blown away. Right off the bat, once you adjust the picture to your liking, there's nothing like it. I'm coming from a 42" LG plasma and it's not even in the same league. I am impressed with how customizable it is, the amount of apps offered, I literally don't even need my Apple TV anymore. The sound is pretty good but I'll be purchasing a sound bar anyway. The graphics on my PS4 are outrageous on this tv. So yeah so far so good. I'll update if any issues pop up or in a couple of months.

    Fifty Shades of Grey

No - not the movie. I am talking about when a black screen is shown on this TV. It cannot do black - it comes close when brightness is turned way down. It also suffers from 'flashlighting' from near the SONY logo. Aside for this, everything else is great. Picture quality for both sports, movies, and TV is very realistic. Android TV and other built in apps are great. The TV itself and stand are perfect. HDR shows don't seem to be any different than regular 4K - which is really stunning. I should have spent the extra money for the 930D but the price went up. If I went to a Samsung KS8000, it would cost more, would need another stand, and would give up Android TV. I will most likely keep this TV because the pluses outweigh the minuses.

    Love the TV

I have Sony TV’s and always been buying them. Why? Because I love the picture and the sound on the TV’s. We were going to buy a TV for our kids room, looking for a 55” smart TV with just the basics. We got one that was defective so we had to return the TV to Best Buy. I had given my TV to our child for her room, so (lucky me) I got to buy one for our room. I went to the store and looked at the Samsung 55” SUHD 4K (UN55KS8000FXZA) to the Sony 55” 4K (XBR-55X850D). You can guess which one I got, the Sony. I am happy with my purchase and looks great when we are watching movies in the dark, and while I am playing my Xbox One. I am happy, just hope that we do not have any problems with the Android on this TV.

    Colors are phenomenal!

What is love about this TV: 1. Colors - Very vibrant, especially reds and greens. 2. Motion - Takes watching sports to a whole new level. 3. Off-angle viewing - The IPS panel allows for great viewing in our wide family room. 4. Android TV - Easy to use with little to no lag time. Tons of apps. 5. Design - Very thin tv and looks great mounted on the wall. 6. 4K/HDR - The 4k quality of this tv is great the images look so real especially with the color depth the Triluminos display offers. What I don't like about this TV: 1. Bleeding - Only noticeable in a completely dark room, but there is some bleeding from the edges. I rarely watch tv without lights on, thus isn't a huge deal, but for this reason I only give it 4 stars. This has been an issue with LCD/LEDs since there existence Sony should have better quality control or new innovative ideas on how to prevent this. 2. IPS glow - A known downfall of IPS panels. Only noticeable at off angle viewing in a very dark room. The wide viewing angle definitely makes the IPS panel worth it if you have a wide family room. 3. Black levels - Another known downfall of IPS panels. If you don't watch tv in a dark room this really isn't an issue. Again, the wide viewing angle makes at TV with an IPS panel worth buying. Overall: Wonderful TV for the price. The pure richness of the colors is close to oLED quality in my opinion and a fraction of the cost. Samsung panels are currently inferior in terms of color depth than Sony in 2016. Absolutely love watching sports on this TV. Dark scene movies not as much due to reasons mentioned above. Sound is actually decent for how thin this TV is. If you are thinking of buying a Sony 55 inch avoid the 700d and spend a little extra for the 850d.

    NOT BAD LOOKING

I bought A 2015 -55 X850C Model but I have to comment here no X850C area anymore the panel failed at 1.5 years not happy but it was perhaps a better TV than this with its VA panel and I liked it very well . until it croaked the panel last week and Sony always look better than Samsung anyway , Squaretrade extended warranty offered me me a 2016 Sony 55-X850D replacement that is a real fair offer and same modal tier. My concern is the IPS panel black and contrast in these X850D as opposed to 2015 X850C VA panel deeper blacks and more contrast . Regrettably I refused 55- X850D for now and am punting for my warranty cash limit at $1199.00 and I add in what I need and get the stonking good Sony 55-X900E with VA panel at Brentwood no.cal as soon as they commit to a cash payout if they will ,.hoping tomorrow and a 900E is on my wall mount in here right near this PC instead of the temporary late 2009 24" dynex out of my garage in here that I re capped the power board in when that croaked 4 years in , I miss my 55" 4K HDR Sony iX850C at week already it was stonking good . This 2016 PC has 2016 27" separate screen with it and way better picture than my old Dynex which is expected so I watch TV on it too right now PC can put 4K to a TV too and it has a HDMI cable for the TV in here . AFAIK the *55X900E is this *55X850C and *55X850D model their given the *55X850E is not a USA model but the seasonal price as expected is much higher then EOL 55-X950D or what I paid for my Q4 Price 55-X850C but I don't have a problem with that it's just what it is every year. I believe the X850C and X900E are Samung VA panel LCD Cells and likewise X850D are LG Display IPS panel cells some folks like IPS and it wider view area but I have a VA panel bias for those dark room viewing contrast and black levels otherwise I would take the X850D replacement product . My advice get an extended warranty on any LCD TV that's the reality of the reliability of any LED/ LCD TV you buy . I may hear from warranty folks tomorrow about my proposal . but I wouldent mind coming to store to look at X5850D vs X900E anyway but I think the implications are that the 55-X900E is a better TV for me but X850D may be fine for a lot of folks its a Sony XBR and all that goes with that . I been buying without reservations Sony TV since 1993 and any LCD TV can die in a minute that's just how they are , The old dog Sony SXRD LYCoS are that way to same as Ti mirror Chip Samsung & Mitsu. RPG junk . I lost a 2013 Sony Bravia to some failed LED lamps in 2016. I may take the panel apart and fix it I don't have any problem working on these TV I used work as a pro doing that in the 1970's and these are a walk in the park to fix or trash if not repairable compared to the old dogs but they don't use many standardized discrete parts like a lot of the old dogs but that was all going away by the 1980's anyway Maybe I will hear tomorrow my next play failing a cash flash is a 2016 Samsung 55-KS 8000 and they ship at no cost to me but I prefer the Sony 55-X900E and Android TV and Sony looks and picture too w/ VA panel don't know about this one

This has got to be the worst Sony TV to come out for 2016. I purchased due to the fact the Magnolia rep at Best Buy was suggesting I get Sony's up and coming TV. My gut and research said OLED but he steered me away and suggested the Sony. So I went with the Sony. Setup was a breeze. I even ordered the Chocolate 4K HDMI and Cinnamon optical cable. Once set up, the picture was horrible. It was so blurry I swear it was a 480p set. That is even after I tried to play around with settings. Nevertheless, I took it back the next day, and picked up the LG OLED. So far after setting up, the LG OLED BLOWS Sony out the waters by a miles.

First of all this tv has an amazing picture in a well lit room. However when watching at night, the light bleed is almost unbearable. Blacks are almost gray along the edge even after adjusting the picture. The smart functionality works well and is easy to learn. I have the tv connected via Ethernet cable so I cannot comment on wifi connectivity. The remote feels cheap but functions quickly. Overall I do enjoy this tv and would recommend purchasing it, just know that in a dark room black is is not black. Unless you buy OLED tv, true black levels will be non existent for now.

Have this for 30 days great Pic... really nice.. would give it 5 stars but there seems to be a few bugs. Sony uses this TV and one of the USB ports can be an IR Blaster. This IR Blaster is to control my AT&T uverse cable box. Problem, It sometimes just stop working the cable box. After I reset the Android system it works again.... Really Sony why not an learning remote??? after all its not an cheap TV? I like the Android look but seems little sluggish at times. If you press to many keys system reboots. I love the Pic on this TV its the operating system that needs work

I want to love this TV

I owned this tv for a month,I leaned towards Sony because my brother has a Sony and the TV looks AMAZING and it is an older model so I assumed Sony could only get better but man was I wrong...I read the reviews on here and Amazon and more people had great things to say about the TV than bad so I went with it. When I set up the tv and got it running I had the light on in my room so I couldn't notice how ugly the black looked in the dark especially in dark scenes. I've been messing with the setting since the day I bought this TV and I still can't find the perfect setting to get it to look nice. I have searched online and ALOT of people who own this TV have the same issue and Rtings.com states this tv is great but if it's going to be watched in a dark room they dont recommend it and I first hand understand why. Tomorrow im taking it back to my local best buy and exchanging it for the Samsung KS8500,the contrast and black on the samsung is AMAZING and it doesn't look bad in a dark room, rtings.com says it is the best all around tv in this price range out right now. I can't lie, Gaming looks great on this tv,Android TV is great and this tvs design is cool but the grayish blacks really ruined this tv for me and I wanted soooo bad to love it but i cant enjoy this tv at night.

Hi Richie, We regret to hear that this unit failed to meet your expectations. Uneven brightness may be observed when the TV is viewed in a dark environment without a video input source, or with a blank screen. If you should find this affects your enjoyment, there are a few adjustments that can be made to minimize this condition. I have been a loyal Sony TV purchaser and advocate for years. I got this new 55"-er recently, and was in love with it until I started having tons of issues with the remote that came with the tv. Specifically, the up, down, left, right arrows, and the select button in the middle. None of the Sony TVs I have owned were Android TVs and I'm concerned about this issue / debating returning for a refund because it's pointless having such a nice TV if the manufacturer remote to access all the SmartTV functions doesn't even work. :\ Frustrated.

I set the Sony 850d up about 5 days ago. So far I like viewing in Standard picture mode. It keeps the picture Clear and Bright The Blacks Look Great and No Light Bleed as some people have said. Picture looks great for daytime or night viewing. It was easy to hook up. I have a DVD, Cable Box and X Box going to a Denon receiver for home theater then 1 HDMI cable going to input one on Sony TV. This was easy way to hook up for now so I can use cable remote. If anyone has a better way to hook it up please let me know details? Thanks Marc

I recently purchased the Sony XBr55x850D and the Sony /HTNT5 soundbar. At The Soquel, Ca Best buy. This purchase exceeded my expectations in picture and sound quality by far. The Geek Squad delivery and installation went well enough and the support from the Sony rep during and after the purchade was extraordinary. Great price for the package. Incredible features and benefits. Plan to add Sony wireless speakers. Very satisfied.

Image quality is excellent. I bought a Polk speaker system with it which was a mistake. I can't control the Polk speaker with the Sony nor the Verizon remote so now I'm using 2-3 remotes. So in hindsight I would by the Sony speaker if you want an extra speaker.

Best 4K HDR TV for the $ outside of OLED

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I chose this tv over the equivalent Samsung 8000 series because my wife likes black trim better than silver and you get a better smart tv experience with the Android software compared to the custom made Samsung Apps. Also - it was cheaper and came with $200 off a nice soundbar. My friend bought the Samsung and compared to that TV my colors look more natural and not near as saturated. I like the vibrant color of the tv and the Android OS. What I don't like - is the less than ergonomic remote and the issues I've had with HDMI ARC that I never ran into with my 55" Vizio. To get all the audio codecs, best sound quality etc. they recommend you use HDMI 4 (ARC) to your soundbar. So HDMI can be an input as well as an audio output for your Android TV apps. The problem - if your audio out to your soundbar stops sending the signal you get no sound from that nice soundbar you bought. In my situation, I have the latest Time Warner Cable box plugged up via HDMI to the soundbar and that via HDMI up to the TV. Within a day my soundbar would stop outputting sound. After doing research, I found out that my TWC box had bad firmware and was actually sending out a mute command to my soundbar so essentially it was killing my system so I couldn't listen to sound from any Android TV apps (so the smart tv wasn't smart any more). I found out if you unplug the HDMI cord from the TWC box the soundbar immediately starts outputting sound again. Who knew? The solution - they actually make a HDMI CEC Less Adapter you can buy on Amazon for $15 that essentially dumbs down your cable box by blocking the CEC ARC signal pin within the HDMI cable so it will stop interfering with the TV. After all said, it works fine now, but it was a process and didn't help convince my wife that it was any better than our existing Vizio. Would I buy it again - yes, but I wish I knew about HDMI ARC being such a pain. Also - the setting menu's within the Sony are overkill and I actually prefer the simplicity of the Vizio menu system in comparison.

I held off on writing a review until I had the unit for a while. I wanted to see what all it could do. I have had it for about four months now. Yes, the picture is great. There are infinite adjustments to suit most any media you are watching. There is a wide selection of inputs on the back which I love. There are two drawbacks though. I am calling GeekSquad to see if they can be fixed. I will update this review accordingly. Problem one, the sound level indicator bar randomly displays. It also jumps by large margins instead of showing a steady rise or drop in volume. Adjusting the volume causes streaming video to glitch and stutter. It seems the processor can not handle this task of adjusting the volume. The other problem is it is having an increasingly difficult time connecting to my wifi. At first it would loose connection when the t.v. was turned off and not able to reconnect when turned back on. I would have to set the connection manually. Now it won't even find the connection when I try to do it manually. So, I have no t.v. guide, or streaming programming. Hopefully this is a simple fix.

I initially went to the store looking for a 55inch samsung TV but the sales guy in home theater was able to talk me into spending a little bit more and upgrading to the Sony. I set it up by myself but I'm 6'4 and have the reach for that. I would recommend having a friend help to insure the TVs safety as well as your back. I do not use any traditional TV providers I use nothing but streaming services. I've calibrated the TV on the game setting with my Xbox one. I do not have the Xbox one S but the video still looks great. I havent done a whole lot of gaming just yet. my one complaint so far and something I have to take care of later is the initial software update. granted my connection is most likely slower than 90% of the people that will purchase this TV but I wouldn't expect an update for a TV to be very large. however after letting the TV sit for about an hour I had only reached 4%. will update my review if anything changes but I'm definitely satisfied so far.
