This is one fabulous 85" TV

This is a great TV. Trust me. I am a videophile. I own 4 projectors and a 110" professional projection screen. Picture quality is the most important attribute for me. However, there is one catch with this TV, it must be calibrated. I suspect the blooming problem and uniformity issues for most people are mostly caused by incorrect calibration. For the darkroom, the default brightness of 50 is way too high which will exacerbate the non-uniformity and poor black level. The correct brightness is 10 - 15! The contrast needs to turn way up to 75 - 85. Then you will see a marvelous picture. For bright rooms, you can turn the brightness up to about 30. The exception is watching 4k Dolby Vision movies. Dolby Vision has such a high dynamic range, the high brightness level doesn't hurt the black level. I would also recommend greyscale calibration but it is not for everyone as it needs a colorimeter and is mostly for video buffs.

This TV has great colors and size is just perfect. Easy setup. Smart menu is fast and sound is okay but since I have it hooked to Sony sound bar 7.1 . Overall I am very satisfied with the purchase.

Had the TV for a week and have watched DirectTV, NetFlix, Amazon and Blue Ray. I have no complaints whatsoever, picture is excellent! Up scaling is important today and the Sony does an excellent job. Cant speak to sound since I hooked it up to a 5.1 surround. If your looking in the 80 inch category - this is a good place to start and with best buy 30 day return policy you can always bump up to a 900F or 950g. I looked at all 3 and couldn't see a 1,000 or 2,000 difference.

Too many problems for the price

Sound goes out randomly, have to reboot. Sometimes remote quits working, have to unplug, wait, and plug back in. For the exorbitant price, I expected a Mercedes, got a Kia instead. Plenty of good features, but with constant, continual random annoyances that I've never experienced with cheaper tvs, I wish I'd not splurged on this overpriced POS. I really thought I would get what I was paying for, that the huge pricetag would equate to high quality. I was wrong, apparently.

Not the Greatest!!! Sony X850G 85"

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Very seldom do I write reviews. However, I feel compelled to do so regarding the Sony X850G. I researched televisions for a few months before deciding on the Sony 85" for both size, quality, and of course - price! I waited until it was on sale to purchase and straight out of the box it appeared to be everything I wanted it to be. Then came the install. My previous television was a Sharp 75" Aquos 3D capable television purchased around 8 years ago. While I never loved the blacks on that particular TV it served its purpose. I wanted to upgrade and although the Sony is bigger I wont go as far as to say its even better than my previous 8 year old TV. Once installed on the wall and all of the components hooked up (Blue Ray / Sony Receiver / Dish Network) it was time to check out. Long story short the picture was grainy on Blue Ray movies, motion was poor when watching sports through satellite, and the color bloom was terrible. I downloaded the latest software update and I actually think it helped a little - but it still was sub par. The Super Bowl looked terrible. The best performance I saw out of the Sony over the 2 weeks I had it was the streamed movies and shows through Hulu. I really could not get over the green blooming from the top left and right corners and the overall rainbow halo effect it had when viewing at an angle. I have returned and decided to move on to the Samsung Q70 75". This is purely based on reviews and of course should be an upgrade; excluding size of course. The 85" did actually overpower my living room so the 75 should be just fine. I didn't like - if you decide to get this TV - maybe you will. It has great features however my main reason to have a tv is the picture. The Sony X850G 85" just did not do it for me!

    Terrible backlight/flashlighting

Man, did I want to like this TV. Unfortunately, it's simple "so-so" at best. There is no local dimming, so the backlight just washes out the screen. Any dark scene is going to be a light gray color. Also, the blacks are terribly crushed. So, not only are black scenes a pixelated mess, but they're the light gray I mentioned. At this price point, you're better off with a Samsung Q7-type TV. Or, spend more for a the 900 series Sony. I really wanted to like this, but I had to return it. Dark room, especially, this TV is a no-go. It *might* be ok if you only watch TV in bright rooms. Mine also had awful flashlighting from the lower left corner.

Purchased this TV in 2019 and it quit working at the end of 2020. Customer service with Sony and Best Buy were absolutely terrible. Sony is definitely not the quality brand it once was - would not recommend.

    Dead after 3.5 years

This TV died after only 3.5 years of VERY light use. After researching, it appears to be the eMMc chip. I have no desire to take this huge TV apart and try to fix this or spend more money hiring someone to fix. A Sony Bravia should last more than 3.5 years. Won't be buying Sony going forward.

Major issues right out of the box!

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Already having major issues with it out of the box. It will need to be replaced. For starters, there are what appear to be dirt specs behind the screen just off center. It’s incredibly distracting watching hockey as the ice really makes the speckles show up. Beyond that, I find the picture blurry and the colors way oversaturated. I’ve played with multiple settings and cannot get this set to look right. For comparison, I replaced a 65 inch Panasonic VT60 with this because I wanted the bigger size. In my man cave, I’ve got the 75 inch 900F that I’ve had since July and that set has no issues whatsoever. I’m beyond disappointed in the picture quality when watching football on DirecTV. I cannot get the picture dialed in. Closeups are great. But when the camera pans back before each play the pic is substandard. Blurry and fuzzy and almost as if the players are against a green screen. Perhaps I got a faulty panel. I'm 11 feet from the screen so there should be no issue. There is such limited information on this TV across the Web that I cannot find any picture settings to emulate. Thus far, I am very underwhelmed. I had high hopes considering the experience I’ve had with the 900F. But so far, this TV is a non-starter. Hoping the replacement TV proves that I just got a bummer panel.
