Great value and performance. Nice feature set.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is my first “real” camera, and I have a lot to learn…but so far, I am loving it. It is lightweight, compact and great to handle. It is plastic, metal would have been great, but it feels sturdy and nice in the hand. The viewfinder is very useful and although I still need to get more familiar with the software and button layout, everything is straight forward and easy to understand. Taking pictures has been great. The camera itself as well as auto focus is very, very fast. Pictures are extremely crisp, and while I like my results so far, once I get more into lighting, focus and other things, I think they will only get better. Video is much of the same, but here I really need to learn a few things. That said, to shoot in 4K is crazy to me, but the little samples I have shot look better than I thought they would. Again, here, the viewfinder shows its value with added versatility. I am ready to explore this more. One of the things I am most excited about with this camera is to be able to improve it as I do. As is, the camera is great and has all the tools I need at the moment, but the ability to add lights, mics and other tools is very exciting. Most importantly though, are lenses. The included lens has performed well, but when I get to the point where I want to do more, I can add new glass to help get me there. My only real “issue” with the camera is the battery (sort of). While it does last fairly long when dealing with photos, it does take a hit when taking video. That is expected, and, honestly, it still does well, but I do not understand why Sony did not include a charger with the camera. To have to plug the camera in to charge it is not optimal. I will end up picking up batteries and a charger anyway…but it would have been nice to see something included. In the end, I am very happy with this camera. I think it is a great value. You get a feature-rich camera (with some higher end features at a lower price point), a great all-around performer in both picture and video, and access to a system that allows you to improve on what you just purchased down the road. I think it is a great choice for all, but certainly for those just getting started.

Everyone Needs This
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you like to take photos, you need this camera. WOW. Talk about features and ease of use. Do not be intimidated by all the options. I love that you can take both video and still photos with this camera. I really like the flip up display so I can set it up to record myself for instructional videos and see what I am doing and if I am in the shot or not. I really like how small yet comfortable it feels in my hands. Other cameras I have had are bulky and heavy. This has a great weight and it small enough to fit in any of my bags for carrying around. When starting out you can leave it on Auto and your pictures will still turn out fantastic. As you get more comfortable with it you can begin to experiment with the different settings to really get that perfect picture regardless of the setting. This has wifi and bluetooth which also makes for ease of sharing photos with your other devices. Amazing auto focus and low light pictures. Super easy to use, my kids have figured it out and love taking pictures with it too. I would never go back to an SLR after having used this Sony Mirrorless camera.

Great Mirrorless Camera by Sony
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Sony Mirrorless Alpha 6100 is a fantastic lightweight mirrorless camera and excels at travel photography. I'm not going to go over all the stats because if you're reading this review you probably want to know how it performs and have read over all the technical stuff already. New sensors and Megapixels and frames per second are great, but most people don't print billboard size photos. 24 MP is more than enough for anyone who's going to print 4x6, 8x10, 16x20, etc size photos. And most cameras have been capable enough for most average users for years. The big thing with mirrorless is the shutter is now gone and has opened up a lot of possibilities for low light shooting, video and longevity. I have been a heavy Nikon User for the last 10 years. Owning many Dslr's and I even have the Nikon Z6 mirrorless. Sony has been gaining a ton of ground in the camera market so I've been interested to see how a new mirrorless would perform. And honestly I hate to say it but this little camera is a fierce competitor to a much more expensive Z6. The autofocus and shutter is crisp and concise, the ISO noise handles low light well, it's 100% a perfect travel camera because it's so lightweight and inconspicuous. The Camera has standard shooting Auto modes for people who don't want to get too technical, Slow Motion Video Modes, and Panoramic modes that all function the way they should and are user friendly. The video auto tracking is fluid and pairs well with a Ronin-SC. The ronin balanced it perfectly and I'm now using the camera for walkthrough Real Estate videos in 4k. I will say that I wish that they provided a lens with a lower F/stop. 3.5 isn't low enough to get depth of field separation that most enthusiasts are looking for. People don't understand sometimes that a 1.8 lens will give them that beautiful out of focus image that they see everywhere. It's why Iphone created a portrait mode. Luckily since the lens is detachable you get a relatively inexpensive prime from Sony and solve that problem. The only big gripe I have with my use so far is during burst shooting. If you fire more than a few shots the camera has to catch up and write to the card delaying your next shot. This card was provided by Sony so I assume its a sufficient speed card to get the job done, so I'm assuming its a lag in write speed with the camera. The Electronic View Finder is very different then a traditional camera. With mirrorless you're no longer seeing a reflected mirror image of your subject you're actually looking through a "digital" viewfinder thats projecting the image, kind of like a TV. It took me some getting used to it at first, but after a while you get used to it. I do like that the EVF in manual will adjust the picture to your settings to show you your photos are too dark. It's like a failsafe for photo exposure. Once you find your way around the camera for a bit the controls feel second nature. I liked the amount of flexibility with Manual mode as thats where I normally shoot with my Nikons. I was able to cater my shots exactly how I need to which is surprising for a entry level camera. I really do think we are in the golden age of digital cameras. This Sony is a super capable mirrorless camera that does everything a normal person or even a videographer would need for a fraction of what it cost 5 years ago. Overall the camera is easy to use for any photographer and I wouldn't hesitate to buy this camera if you're wanting to get into mirrorless with detachable lenses. This camera was made to travel with you!

Good camera, not perfect
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Having owned the a6000, I was interested in what the a6100 had to offer as improvements. In a nutshell, although the a6000 is 6 years old [an eternity in the camera world] does the a6100 offer enough improvements to justify the price differential? Maybe the most important factor to consider with any camera, picture quality is good but Sony can still be a bit aggressive in their noise reduction and resulting results due to this. Compared to the a6000, I see noticeably better looking photos, colors are richer. Also, the a6100 outputs RAW format photos if PP is your thing. The autofocus and ability to identify a focus point via the touch screen works well. Tracking of moving subjects, in my limited experience, is great. Speaking of the screen, the ability to flip screen is a bonus, esp the ability to face the front of the camera. Perhaps a minor point but the a6100 has a silent-shutter option, the a6000 does not. Another possibly minor point but one I find quite useful, the built-in flash is constructed such that you can pull the flash bracket back a bit and bounce it off the ceiling, typically creating a more pleasing shot. On the downside, menu diving is still a chore, even for simple tasks. As an example, I rely heavily on preset shooting modes and find that preset modes being available through a camera's mode dial the fastest means to switch for different shooting goals and conditions. Here, you can assign a function button to take you to the memory recall settings menu item and then choose the desired setting, basically a show-stopper in fast action conditions. This is a personal sore spot although the a6100 is not alone in this regard. For my type of shooting, I'd look elsewhere but for the set-it-and-forget-it crowd or the point and shoot folks, the a6100 comes through, though you will pay a bit of a premium for the Sony brand name. As the a6000 is still available [6 years is a LONG time in camera tech, though] at a lower price, Sony would do well to cut the price on the a6100 a bit if they are serious about attracting these groups. For one on a tight budget, the a6000 represents a better value.

Nice
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I got my Alpha 6100 literally the day before Christmas Eve. It was packaged with everything I needed to get started. I installed the strap, batteries and sd card without needing the manual. It is smaller and lighter than the DSLR I’ve been using. Somehow, the “feel” of it isn’t really comfortable, but I haven’t quite figured out why. I was able to navigate through the setting with relative ease. I’ve downloaded the Imaging Edge app but didn’t find it user friendly. Setting it up to connect to my WiFi was a problem for me. I rarely have problems with these technologies, but I doubt that I will be using WiFi to transfer pictures to my iPad. I could not get my blue tooth to connect either. I will have to take some time with the user manual to see what I’m doing wrong. However, its simple to transfer using the memory card. The pictures are great. I found it easier to cast them to my tv than to transfer them to my iPad via WiFi. There are a LOT of settings and options on this camera. The on-line user manual was 580 pages. That’s a big book. I took some pictures in my den at night and they were great. I can do bursts quickly and all I’ve done was using the auto setting. I’m a novice but have owned many cameras over the years. I think this one will finally be the right combination of compact and excellent picture quality. Now all I have to do is read that manual and learn how to make myself good enough to make the most of this camera. I’m looking forward to springtime when I can get outside more and have opportunities to have better subjects.

Hard to beat!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm writing this review from the viewpoint of 35 years of photography experience. I would consider myself to be an advanced amateur although I have shot many weddings, graduation sessions and family gatherings for hire over the years. To put it simply, bang for your buck you can not go wrong with this camera. Let me dive into it a bit more. First, the build quality is very nice for the price point. It is true that it is made of plastic with a nice rubberized grip. I don't see this as a problem considering the intended target audience for this camera. Sony sells a couple of higher tier models that look virtually the same and even have the same sensor, yet cost considerably more. What do you gain with them? Well, you gain a magnesium body and depending on the model, built in image stabilization. Sure there are a few other upgraded specs on the higher end models, but nothing major and the sensor (I.E., picture quality) is exactly the same as the A6100. Neither of those "upgrades" are worth up to close to twice the price depending on what one you were to choose. The A6100 is built plenty good enough for 99% of the users out there. The camera feels very good in your hands. I find the controls logically placed and easy to understand. The rear touchscreen flips out and has a nice resolution. The eye piece view finder (EVF) is also very nice, although at a slightly lower resolution compared to many other cameras on the market. However, it works just fine and shouldn't be an issue. In terms of features, most cameras in this price range are going to be about the same. I won't dive deep into the specs as you can pull up the list of specs in the camera description. I will say that as someone who has probably used every major camera brand on the market, you will not be left wanting for anything. I can not think of a situation this camera will not be able to handle. One thing it does lack is in-body stabilization. Now to be fair, many of the other makers don't offer this, either. At least not at this price point. But if you are coming from a pocket camera or used to just using your phone as your camera, you may be a little shocked to find that it is not there. But have no fear, because most of the Sony lenses (particularly the zooms such as the 16-50mm that is included) have image stabilization built into the lens. So the fact that the camera body itself doesn't have it, really is not an issue. The battery used is the same one (NP-FW50) that has now been used in many Sony cameras over the recent years. Battery life is good for a mirrorless camera. Mirrorless cameras (regardless of brand) have a tendency to not have the best battery life. 300-400 photos would be considered good for any mirrorless. The reason for this is one, the cameras are smaller so the batteries need to be as well. And two, with both a rear LCD and an EVF, they draw a lot of power. Still, even for a mirrorless I found the battery to be a little better than what I am used to. Although I would certainly buy at least one spare if you do anything more than the occasional snap shots (I know I did :-) ). Now, the most important factor is image quality. Simply put, it is fantastic! The photos are clear, noise free (at reasonable lower ISO settings) and have accurate color. I have been happy with the photos so far all the way up to ISO 6400. Although the ISO on all modern cameras can technically go higher, beyond ISO 6400 is really just an emergency situation kind of thing on any of them. Beyond looking at the image on the back of the camera, the images beyond ISO 6400 usually will look pretty bad. Again, that is all cameras. But with that having been said, in 35 years I have never once needed to shoot with an ISO over that and even getting close to ISO 6400 is rare. So in reality, it will never be an issue. The included lens in this kit is an image stabilized 16-50mm. As a general rule, the lenses that come packaged in a kit are usually okay but not great. This one is really no different. The zoom range is nice (particularly going as wide as 16mm) and the image quality is certainly not bad. But if you decide you want to get a bit more serious about photography you will want to upgrade the lens eventually. But to be honest, that is why kit lenses are generally just "okay". They are included to get you started and let you decide what focal lengths will work for your needs. Once you are comfortable with the camera, then you have tons of lenses to choose from for an upgrade. As I mentioned at the beginning, I do weddings on occasion. When doing these it is important to have a camera that not only provides great image quality, but also it needs to be reliable. Now this would not be a camera I would use as my primary camera for a wedding. I have full-frame cameras for that. But would I be comfortable using it as a backup or secondary camera at a wedding? You bet! The handling, features and most importantly the image quality would easily be fine for a wedding. So would I recommend this camera? In a heartbeat!

Almost a five star
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Sony a6100 is an upgrade of the a6000, Sony’s successful and well-regarded entry-level mirrorless camera. It kept the best of the 6000 while improving picture quality and adding some high-end features. Here are some initial thoughts after using this new camera for a couple of weeks. Physically, the build quality is quite good with a substantial and rigid feel for a plastic body. The rear screen is now touch-enabled for focus and exposure and can pivot 180 degrees up allowing selfies or v-blogs. The OLED viewfinder is good but not a match to the higher resolution EVF’s on Sony’s more expensive models. There is a small pop up flash, but if you plan much flash use, I’d recommend buying a separate TTL (smart) flash to attach to the camera’s hot shoe. Overall it has a good feel in the hand, and the plastic construction makes it very light. Its numerous controls are well laid out except for a very awkwardly placed video button. On the minus side, I found it awkward to insert or remove SD cards since the slot is very close to the battery door hinge. It uses the small FW-50 battery and although battery life is reasonable, you’ll want to carry extras. Neither the body or kit lens is weather-sealed, so don’t plan on using it in rainy or very dusty locations. Lastly, Sony chose to use a USB micro connection rather than the newer, better and more robust USB-C for in-camera charging and PC connection. Internally, it uses Sony’s proven 24mp APS-C sensor. Using Sony’s current BIONZ X processor makes for fast picture processing. Burst mode can shoot at 11 frames per second and buffer up to 75 jpegs. The big news is that it now includes a 425 point focusing system with face and eye detection with real-time tracking. That’s a big step up in focus ability and arguably Sony’s is the best in the industry. This same system is used in several of Sony’s high-end mirrorless cameras. The focus is fast and accurate, and it will continuously track moving subjects and while maintaining focus. However, to make full use of this and many of the advanced features, you need to find your way through an extensive and somewhat obtuse menu system. This camera has the capabilities of many substantially higher priced cameras, but you have to be willing to investigate, read and learn to make use of all its power and features. Once you do, you can customize function buttons, build your own personal “My Menu” and customize the pop-up menu selections to quickly access the settings you change most often. It has every shooting, focusing, and exposure mode and picture setting you can imagine and probably more. It shoots in JPG, RAW, and RAW+JPG still formats. It records video up to 4K UHD while still continuously focusing. It’s WIFI and Bluetooth enabled allowing you to send pictures directly to your phone, receive location info from your phone, or operate the camera remotely. There’s NFC built in to quickly connect your phone at a touch. ` The 16-50mm kit lens has been around for a while and was designed to meet a price point and to be very small. It keeps the camera quite compact … more than pocket-size but much less than a DSLR or most superzooms. The 16-50mm zoom range is equivalent to a 24-75mm on a full-frame camera. That’s a reasonable walk-around lens, but keep in mind, it’s only a 3:1 zoom, so with this lens, you’ll have to do much of the zooming with your feet. It is stabilized, and since the camera does not have stabilization built-in, that’s a real asset. With a maximum f-stop of 3.5 to 5.6, stabilization is needed for low to moderate light conditions if you want to keep the ISO and noise reasonable. This is packed into an amazingly small body … almost pancake size when off and not extended. The camera has very effective lens correction built-in so there’s almost no image distortion throughout the zoom, but the corners get somewhat soft at the wide end. I’ve read reports of variations in quality from unit to unit and some durability issues, but at this point, my lens is performing well. A faster f-stop and/or longer zoom would be more versatile. There are many excellent e-mount lenses that can be used with this camera, but good lenses are expensive. The a6100 is also available with an additional 70-210mm lens, and that may be worth considering if you want a longer zoom and are willing to carry an additional lens. There’s also a highly rated 18-135 Sony zoom I’m considering. Is this the camera for you? If you want extensive features, one of the best action tracking focusing systems, and great picture quality this gets you into an excellent mirrorless camera system at a modest price. If you’re a serious photographer and want a small, walkabout camera with semi-pro features, it’s a solid choice. If all you want is a point and shoot camera and will leave it set on auto rather than make use of its capabilities, there are many other choices that may be more suitable. All things said, there’s a whole lot here to recommend. A lot of technology is packed into this compact body. At the price, this may be the best deal out there as far as features and price. If Sony would update the arcane menu system and improve the kit lens, it would easily get a 5-star rating from me. As is, it gets a high 4.

Advanced Auto-focus and Beautiful Images
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have owned a few Sony mirrorless cameras over the past 7 or so years, and the new Alpha 6100 impressed me with its great balance of features - especially the improved auto-focus system. Sony provided the camera in exchange for this review, and I was pleased to be able to use it to capture some shots over the last two weeks, during the Christmas holiday season. I'll mention my impressions of the features I found noteworthy. If you're considering purchasing this camera, you may already understand quite a bit about digital camera technology and why you would want to invest in one in order to capture pictures that smartphones simply aren't capable of. If you haven't, the short answer is that these cameras have dramatically bigger sensors that capture more light and can produce the shallow-depth-of-field ("blurry background") effect without all the digital processing tricks that smartphones rely on. In the enthusiast stand-alone camera market, there are two primary types of cameras - DSLR's and "mirrorless" cameras (the Alpha 6100 is a mirrorless camera). Without saying too much about the technical differences, the latter are so named because they eliminate the physical mirrors that DSLR's use - the viewfinder is actually a tiny LCD screen that shows you exactly the picture the camera is going to take, including helpful information overlays. Traditionally, the downside of mirrorless cameras has been slower autofocus systems and perceptible lag in the viewfinder. However, Sony and other companies have been relentlessly tackling these problems, and even the industry giants Canon and Nikon are producing mirrorless systems now to cater to people that like their advantages. As mentioned, I have used multiple Sony cameras - mirrorless always appealed to me as the inevitable future for stand-alone cameras, and I have invested in a few additional lenses for Sony's mirrorless camera system. In the meantime, Sony has really improved their technology and made some waves amongst professional photographers. The Sony Alpha 6100 takes their current state-of-the-art auto-focus system with real-time tracking and adds it to a model in reach of hobbyists and families that want to capture gorgeous photo memories. The auto-focus system can be switched between person and pet tracking modes, and has an uncanny ability to lock onto subjects' eyes. Once locked onto a subject, continuing to hold the shutter button half-pressed will keep the focus locked on, and does a fantastic job of following that subject as they move and turn - often even if the subject is partially- or fully-obscured momentarily. This is definitely the best auto-focus system I've used on a Sony camera, and from other reviews of the Alpha 6100's siblings, Sony seems to have one of the top focusing systems right now. If you're thinking of this camera as an investment to capture pictures of children in motion, the auto-focus system is a very good reason to purchase the Alpha 6100. The only downside is that you will need to change some of the options out-of-the-box to enable the real-time tracking and tweak how it works to your preferences. Another improvement over Sony's older models that I really like is the improvements to smartphone connectivity. Sony has had an optional companion app for mobile Android and iOS devices for a while, and they renamed it from "PlayMemories" to "Imaging Edge" since my previous camera model. The app is not the most intuitive, and I did find it a little cumbersome to get it connected initially. (I was using an iPhone; maybe it would be slightly easier with Android. However, NFC did work - I'm not sure if that improvement in Imaging Edge is due to an improvement by Sony or Apple, but it's cool that NFC can be used on iOS now to simplify the Wi-Fi connection.) I have found it to be reliable enough - no dropped connections between camera and phone yet. Sony's app has always allowed you to turn your phone into a remote control for the camera, which is a great feature if you want to set up the camera on a tripod and take a group photo that you can be part of. It's also long supported transferring photos from the camera to the phone, to make it easier to share them (or edit them with another app). However, one feature that is new with latest series of Alpha cameras is an additional Bluetooth connection support which the app leverages to "geotag" photos using your phone's GPS. I always thought it was really neat to be able to see my vacation photos taken with a smartphone on a map based on where they were taken, and had wished that data could be integrated with my "good" camera. Although I've used apps that log your phone's location and then use that to add the data to photos later based on timestamp, it's pretty cool that it can now be integrated right as the photos are taken. This is a feature that some of Sony's competitors have already had for a while, but it's a nice-to-have on the Alpha 6100. (Of course, if you use this feature and are conscious about privacy, be careful to consider removing geotag information before sharing photos online.) The Alpha 6100 takes great pictures. It takes some practice to get the hang of adding effects that everyone is used to adding with filters in smartphone apps, but the results really are great. With a 24MP sensor, the images capture a lot of information and are great for printing. Due to the larger sensor, pictures taken in low light exhibit less digital noise than smartphones (though smartphones can compensate with more software corrections). I've very pleased with the color and sharpness I've gotten. I do not typically shoot a lot of video, but this camera can take 4K footage and I thought the video quality was quite good on a 4K TV. It does not support some of the more advanced videography features (like S-Log), though higher-end Sony models do. The Alpha 6100 is typically sold in a bundle with a small, 16-50mm power-zoom lens. The lens is compact enough, especially compared to typical DSLR lenses. It's a OK starter lens and works well with the auto-focus system. Sony and other manufacturers make a number of E-mount lenses with a range of prices. Although many will cost as much or more than the camera (which is common for any interchangeable-lens camera system), there are some reasonably-priced gems and many of the expensive ones are highly rated. I really appreciated that Sony is still using the same battery that earlier cameras in their NEX and Alpha 6000 series used. This means all my spare batteries work with any camera and charger. On the downside, Sony's higher end models are now beginning to use a newer batter that has longer life, but I found battery life to be more than sufficient for my needs. (The batteries are small and it's easy to care a spare or two.) If you're not already a Sony camera user, this may not matter to you - but I would like to point out that all of Sony's cameras have featured USB charging built-in, which is actually quite convenient (they can charge with a simple micro-USB cable; no need to to travel with a charger unless you want to). The Alpha 6100 uses a slightly lower resolution LCD screen in its electronic viewfinder than in higher-end Sony models, but I still find it very clear to use. One feature I miss that Sony has included on other models is an artificial horizon overlay in the viewfinder (or rear screen) that makes it easy to get level horizons in your shorts. The rear screen is touch-sensitive, though the interface still must be operated with the controls on the rear of the camera - the touch is mostly used for tapping to pick a focus point if you can't get the camera to focus where you want. The rear touch screens of Sony's latest models now do flip up 180 degrees - basically a "selfie mode." I think using this camera for selfies is a bit silly, but it could certainly be very practical if you're interested in making YouTube-style videos. My existing investment in the Sony mirrorless system makes me admittedly biased, but Sony has been making some very good cameras. There are highly-regarded competitors, but the Alpha 6100 is still a great purchase. It's an extremely nice upgrade to older cameras at the lower end of Sony's Alpha 6000 lineup, adding the latest auto-focus and smartphone connectivity features while retaining lens and battery compatibility. And for anyone considering the investment in a stand-alone camera, the Alpha 6100 has a nice blend of features for a reasonable price.

Awesome camera with a bad app
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The A6100 is an entry level Sony Mirrorless camera. This is my first time experiencing a mirrorless or a full frame camera. First impressions: (in comparison to a typical DSLR - I have Canon T7i) The Sony A6100 is super light with a nice smooth finish. I find it very comfortable to hold. The view finder, unlike a DSLR camera is on the left side of the camera, which might require a little time to get used to. Screen clarity is awesome, typical Sony quality. The 16-50 lens is definitely a starter and needs an upgrade. Battery can charge inside the camera, so I can use external battery packs as needed. The auto focus system is great, it helps you take sharp images really easily. Simple and effective autofocus system, Excellent Raw Quality, touchscreen, there's no camera that makes it so easy to capture unique moments of your life. Picture quality is amazing including the low light. Relatively low-resolution electronic viewfinder. New features include ‘Eye AF’ for animals instead of just for humans, while adding AI-based real-time tracking - this is amazing!! This automatically focuses on eyes wherever they move within the frame. Autofocus speed is incredibly quick, rated at 1/50th of a second. That’s three times faster than in the A6000 and far better than my DSLR. Since the Alpha line is so popular, there's tons of online tutorials and guides for using this camera. Cons: Sony makes great hardware, but they fall flat on their face when it comes to creating usable software and apps. The app used for transferring pictures - Imaging Edge is a text book example of Sony's inability to consider user experience when designing an app. Clearly, this was made by hardware engineers and not UI/UX designers. Which would be acceptable, if the app actually worked as intended. The setup for WiFi to transfer photos is really confusing and poorly documented, but at least that works. No amount of playing with settings in the app or camera seem to help. My only option is to uninstall the app, re-install the app and set it up again from the beginning. And now I need to find a new way to geo-tag my photos because the Sony Imaging Edge Mobile app has failed. In my view, this is a five star camera with a one star mobile app. If geotagging and mobile apps are not a priority for you, you should definitely go for this camera.

Fantastic Full Feature Mirrorless Camera
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I’ve been an amateur digital photographer for many years. I’ve owned many cameras including everything from point and shoot, to digital SLR cameras, to mirrorless. I haven’t owned a mirrorless camera in seven years so I was excited to get my hands on the Sony Alpha 6100 mirrorless camera with the E PZ 16-50mm lens. Spec wise the A6100 is feature packed includes the features I was most interested in including a 24 megapixel aps-c sensor, 4k video recording, 5x slow motion, 60x high speed recording, ISO range of 100-3200, a tilting 3” LCD touchscreen, and real time tracking autofocus. Unboxing revealed the camera, battery, power adapter, a micro usb charging cable, a camera strap, an eyepiece viewfinder cup, and the manual. Please note that no SD card is included. When removing the camera from the box I was immediately surprised by the weight and feel of the camera. The camera only weighs in at about 14 ounces but it definitely has a substantial and quality feel to it. One could comfortably carry this camera around for extended periods of time. I do wish the lens cap came with a tether. I popped the battery into the camera and loaded an SD card in the same compartment area. I quickly discovered that the battery was not charged so I hooked the camera up to the power adapter. I was disappointed that there is no included external battery charger. The battery charges while in the camera. I was also disappointed by the flimsy feel of the access door to the usb charging compartment. Hopefully it holds up. After charging the battery I was eager to shoot some photos but first I wanted to get it ready to wirelessly transfer images to my mobile device so I downloaded the Imaging Edge Mobile app. This app is indispensable if you want to transfer images quickly and easily for viewing on the go. To connect you simply install the app on your device and then access the network transfer settings in the camera menu. Within these settings the camera will display a QR code which you scan with your mobile device’s camera to connect the Alpha 6100 to your device. Your camera and device do not maintain this connection so you have to do this process every time you want to transfer photos. Otherwise you can also just select the cameras SSID in your devices wifi settings and connect via password. I like this option better. I do love the size of this camera which makes it quite portable. It’s also comfortable to hold with a nice grip. I just shoved it in my coat pocket and headed out for some test shots. Keep in mind if you are inexperienced you can easily use this camera in auto mode and get some beautiful point and shoot images. For more experienced users there are a multitude of settings to suit your photographic skills. The menu of settings is impressive. I would note that while the screen is a touch screen for selecting focus points, you cannot use the touch screen to navigate the menus. Very odd. Overall I couldn’t be more pleased with the Sony Alpha 6100. The 24 megapixel image quality is superb. Great in low light with exceptional autofocus. The 4k video is excellent. I would point out one of the highlight features of this camera is its auto tracking functionality which locks in on a subject with its 425 point autofocus and very effectively keeps a fast moving subject in focus throughout a scene. This feature is fantastic for recording videos of children and pets. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced photographer you will get impressive images and videos from this Sony Alpha 6100. You won’t be disappointed.
