    Sony 6100 is simply amazing

Great photos, easy use and great 4k video as well. Very impressed how simple it was to set up the camera and begin taking photos. We used the camera over the holidays and the lighting and decorations on the tree was just amazing. Absolutely enjoy using this camera. I can't say enough on the quality of the camera and the photos. There are a myriad of accessories and additional high end lenses. The 16-50mm lens provides a great beginning for using this camera.

    Advanced Auto-focus and Beautiful Images

I have owned a few Sony mirrorless cameras over the past 7 or so years, and the new Alpha 6100 impressed me with its great balance of features - especially the improved auto-focus system. Sony provided the camera in exchange for this review, and I was pleased to be able to use it to capture some shots over the last two weeks, during the Christmas holiday season. I'll mention my impressions of the features I found noteworthy. If you're considering purchasing this camera, you may already understand quite a bit about digital camera technology and why you would want to invest in one in order to capture pictures that smartphones simply aren't capable of. If you haven't, the short answer is that these cameras have dramatically bigger sensors that capture more light and can produce the shallow-depth-of-field ("blurry background") effect without all the digital processing tricks that smartphones rely on. In the enthusiast stand-alone camera market, there are two primary types of cameras - DSLR's and "mirrorless" cameras (the Alpha 6100 is a mirrorless camera). Without saying too much about the technical differences, the latter are so named because they eliminate the physical mirrors that DSLR's use - the viewfinder is actually a tiny LCD screen that shows you exactly the picture the camera is going to take, including helpful information overlays. Traditionally, the downside of mirrorless cameras has been slower autofocus systems and perceptible lag in the viewfinder. However, Sony and other companies have been relentlessly tackling these problems, and even the industry giants Canon and Nikon are producing mirrorless systems now to cater to people that like their advantages. As mentioned, I have used multiple Sony cameras - mirrorless always appealed to me as the inevitable future for stand-alone cameras, and I have invested in a few additional lenses for Sony's mirrorless camera system. In the meantime, Sony has really improved their technology and made some waves amongst professional photographers. The Sony Alpha 6100 takes their current state-of-the-art auto-focus system with real-time tracking and adds it to a model in reach of hobbyists and families that want to capture gorgeous photo memories. The auto-focus system can be switched between person and pet tracking modes, and has an uncanny ability to lock onto subjects' eyes. Once locked onto a subject, continuing to hold the shutter button half-pressed will keep the focus locked on, and does a fantastic job of following that subject as they move and turn - often even if the subject is partially- or fully-obscured momentarily. This is definitely the best auto-focus system I've used on a Sony camera, and from other reviews of the Alpha 6100's siblings, Sony seems to have one of the top focusing systems right now. If you're thinking of this camera as an investment to capture pictures of children in motion, the auto-focus system is a very good reason to purchase the Alpha 6100. The only downside is that you will need to change some of the options out-of-the-box to enable the real-time tracking and tweak how it works to your preferences. Another improvement over Sony's older models that I really like is the improvements to smartphone connectivity. Sony has had an optional companion app for mobile Android and iOS devices for a while, and they renamed it from "PlayMemories" to "Imaging Edge" since my previous camera model. The app is not the most intuitive, and I did find it a little cumbersome to get it connected initially. (I was using an iPhone; maybe it would be slightly easier with Android. However, NFC did work - I'm not sure if that improvement in Imaging Edge is due to an improvement by Sony or Apple, but it's cool that NFC can be used on iOS now to simplify the Wi-Fi connection.) I have found it to be reliable enough - no dropped connections between camera and phone yet. Sony's app has always allowed you to turn your phone into a remote control for the camera, which is a great feature if you want to set up the camera on a tripod and take a group photo that you can be part of. It's also long supported transferring photos from the camera to the phone, to make it easier to share them (or edit them with another app). However, one feature that is new with latest series of Alpha cameras is an additional Bluetooth connection support which the app leverages to "geotag" photos using your phone's GPS. I always thought it was really neat to be able to see my vacation photos taken with a smartphone on a map based on where they were taken, and had wished that data could be integrated with my "good" camera. Although I've used apps that log your phone's location and then use that to add the data to photos later based on timestamp, it's pretty cool that it can now be integrated right as the photos are taken. This is a feature that some of Sony's competitors have already had for a while, but it's a nice-to-have on the Alpha 6100. (Of course, if you use this feature and are conscious about privacy, be careful to consider removing geotag information before sharing photos online.) The Alpha 6100 takes great pictures. It takes some practice to get the hang of adding effects that everyone is used to adding with filters in smartphone apps, but the results really are great. With a 24MP sensor, the images capture a lot of information and are great for printing. Due to the larger sensor, pictures taken in low light exhibit less digital noise than smartphones (though smartphones can compensate with more software corrections). I've very pleased with the color and sharpness I've gotten. I do not typically shoot a lot of video, but this camera can take 4K footage and I thought the video quality was quite good on a 4K TV. It does not support some of the more advanced videography features (like S-Log), though higher-end Sony models do. The Alpha 6100 is typically sold in a bundle with a small, 16-50mm power-zoom lens. The lens is compact enough, especially compared to typical DSLR lenses. It's a OK starter lens and works well with the auto-focus system. Sony and other manufacturers make a number of E-mount lenses with a range of prices. Although many will cost as much or more than the camera (which is common for any interchangeable-lens camera system), there are some reasonably-priced gems and many of the expensive ones are highly rated. I really appreciated that Sony is still using the same battery that earlier cameras in their NEX and Alpha 6000 series used. This means all my spare batteries work with any camera and charger. On the downside, Sony's higher end models are now beginning to use a newer batter that has longer life, but I found battery life to be more than sufficient for my needs. (The batteries are small and it's easy to care a spare or two.) If you're not already a Sony camera user, this may not matter to you - but I would like to point out that all of Sony's cameras have featured USB charging built-in, which is actually quite convenient (they can charge with a simple micro-USB cable; no need to to travel with a charger unless you want to). The Alpha 6100 uses a slightly lower resolution LCD screen in its electronic viewfinder than in higher-end Sony models, but I still find it very clear to use. One feature I miss that Sony has included on other models is an artificial horizon overlay in the viewfinder (or rear screen) that makes it easy to get level horizons in your shorts. The rear screen is touch-sensitive, though the interface still must be operated with the controls on the rear of the camera - the touch is mostly used for tapping to pick a focus point if you can't get the camera to focus where you want. The rear touch screens of Sony's latest models now do flip up 180 degrees - basically a "selfie mode." I think using this camera for selfies is a bit silly, but it could certainly be very practical if you're interested in making YouTube-style videos. My existing investment in the Sony mirrorless system makes me admittedly biased, but Sony has been making some very good cameras. There are highly-regarded competitors, but the Alpha 6100 is still a great purchase. It's an extremely nice upgrade to older cameras at the lower end of Sony's Alpha 6000 lineup, adding the latest auto-focus and smartphone connectivity features while retaining lens and battery compatibility. And for anyone considering the investment in a stand-alone camera, the Alpha 6100 has a nice blend of features for a reasonable price.

I got my camara a month ago and I have to say, I couldn’t be more happy! This cámara has an amazing quality, I do makeup videos and the quality change on my content is insane, I love how smooth and clear it looks, also I has a great blurry background and focus, the colors are also on point because it doesn’t washes out or makes it too orange either which is important for me. And las but not least, the price is very affordable! I love it 100% recommend

The A6100 is an entry level Sony Mirrorless camera. This is my first time experiencing a mirrorless or a full frame camera. First impressions: (in comparison to a typical DSLR - I have Canon T7i) The Sony A6100 is super light with a nice smooth finish. I find it very comfortable to hold. The view finder, unlike a DSLR camera is on the left side of the camera, which might require a little time to get used to. Screen clarity is awesome, typical Sony quality. The 16-50 lens is definitely a starter and needs an upgrade. Battery can charge inside the camera, so I can use external battery packs as needed. The auto focus system is great, it helps you take sharp images really easily. Simple and effective autofocus system, Excellent Raw Quality, touchscreen, there's no camera that makes it so easy to capture unique moments of your life. Picture quality is amazing including the low light. Relatively low-resolution electronic viewfinder. New features include ‘Eye AF’ for animals instead of just for humans, while adding AI-based real-time tracking - this is amazing!! This automatically focuses on eyes wherever they move within the frame. Autofocus speed is incredibly quick, rated at 1/50th of a second. That’s three times faster than in the A6000 and far better than my DSLR. Since the Alpha line is so popular, there's tons of online tutorials and guides for using this camera. Cons: Sony makes great hardware, but they fall flat on their face when it comes to creating usable software and apps. The app used for transferring pictures - Imaging Edge is a text book example of Sony's inability to consider user experience when designing an app. Clearly, this was made by hardware engineers and not UI/UX designers. Which would be acceptable, if the app actually worked as intended. The setup for WiFi to transfer photos is really confusing and poorly documented, but at least that works. No amount of playing with settings in the app or camera seem to help. My only option is to uninstall the app, re-install the app and set it up again from the beginning. And now I need to find a new way to geo-tag my photos because the Sony Imaging Edge Mobile app has failed. In my view, this is a five star camera with a one star mobile app. If geotagging and mobile apps are not a priority for you, you should definitely go for this camera.

    Fantastic Full Feature Mirrorless Camera

I’ve been an amateur digital photographer for many years. I’ve owned many cameras including everything from point and shoot, to digital SLR cameras, to mirrorless. I haven’t owned a mirrorless camera in seven years so I was excited to get my hands on the Sony Alpha 6100 mirrorless camera with the E PZ 16-50mm lens. Spec wise the A6100 is feature packed includes the features I was most interested in including a 24 megapixel aps-c sensor, 4k video recording, 5x slow motion, 60x high speed recording, ISO range of 100-3200, a tilting 3” LCD touchscreen, and real time tracking autofocus. Unboxing revealed the camera, battery, power adapter, a micro usb charging cable, a camera strap, an eyepiece viewfinder cup, and the manual. Please note that no SD card is included. When removing the camera from the box I was immediately surprised by the weight and feel of the camera. The camera only weighs in at about 14 ounces but it definitely has a substantial and quality feel to it. One could comfortably carry this camera around for extended periods of time. I do wish the lens cap came with a tether. I popped the battery into the camera and loaded an SD card in the same compartment area. I quickly discovered that the battery was not charged so I hooked the camera up to the power adapter. I was disappointed that there is no included external battery charger. The battery charges while in the camera. I was also disappointed by the flimsy feel of the access door to the usb charging compartment. Hopefully it holds up. After charging the battery I was eager to shoot some photos but first I wanted to get it ready to wirelessly transfer images to my mobile device so I downloaded the Imaging Edge Mobile app. This app is indispensable if you want to transfer images quickly and easily for viewing on the go. To connect you simply install the app on your device and then access the network transfer settings in the camera menu. Within these settings the camera will display a QR code which you scan with your mobile device’s camera to connect the Alpha 6100 to your device. Your camera and device do not maintain this connection so you have to do this process every time you want to transfer photos. Otherwise you can also just select the cameras SSID in your devices wifi settings and connect via password. I like this option better. I do love the size of this camera which makes it quite portable. It’s also comfortable to hold with a nice grip. I just shoved it in my coat pocket and headed out for some test shots. Keep in mind if you are inexperienced you can easily use this camera in auto mode and get some beautiful point and shoot images. For more experienced users there are a multitude of settings to suit your photographic skills. The menu of settings is impressive. I would note that while the screen is a touch screen for selecting focus points, you cannot use the touch screen to navigate the menus. Very odd. Overall I couldn’t be more pleased with the Sony Alpha 6100. The 24 megapixel image quality is superb. Great in low light with exceptional autofocus. The 4k video is excellent. I would point out one of the highlight features of this camera is its auto tracking functionality which locks in on a subject with its 425 point autofocus and very effectively keeps a fast moving subject in focus throughout a scene. This feature is fantastic for recording videos of children and pets. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced photographer you will get impressive images and videos from this Sony Alpha 6100. You won’t be disappointed.

I would not recommend this camera. Alot of promise, but does not deliver. The battery goes faster than it can charge so I needed to buy an external charger and extra battery. It connected once to my desktop - and NEVER again. Just an error. (Yes I read tech support - I am a pro user - I switched settings from PC Remote, etc but nothing. Even bought a new cable) App on iphone never ran - just a looping error. Couldn't use as a cam since it won't connect to my desktop (or laptop for that matter) I have to download pics or videos via card connected via a different device. Small - yes which is why it was attractive to buy. But even the WiFi/Smartphone features failed to work. Much better options out there. This person will stay away from Sony Camera's. Good Luck.

Great camera intentionally handicapped by Sony

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought this camera to take pictures of my kids. *When* I'm able to get the settings right it takes great pictures. Autofocus is nothing short of amazing. Now for the bad part: the camera is intentionally handicapped by removing the "Minimum shutter speed Speed" Option. Then there is the second slap on the wrist: in any mode but M and S (and the dedicated speed modes), the camera severely reduces shutter speed in favor of lower ISO and higher aperture. I was aware of the first limitation but had no idea of the second - and none of the long list of Sony cameras I owned. The end result: in anything less than great light the camera is unusable for pictures of faster moving subjects (and boy, are those kids fast!). Yes, I can workaround this in S and M modes. Yes, I can be switching modes and adjusting settings based on light conditions. But while I'm doing that I'll be missing the very moments I want to capture and those moments will never repeat again. And as a bonus feature - I feel very hesitant to give the camera in "M" mode to anybody else to take a family photo of us. Way to ruin a great camera Sony!
