Customers consistently note the Cyber-shot RX100 II's compact size and great image quality, even at higher ISO's. Many also appreciate its built-in Wi-Fi for easy sharing of photos on social media. While some users wish for a wider zoom and better grip, the camera's solid construction and user-friendly design are generally well-received.

I bought this as a replacement for a lost (and later found, but kept the RX-100 anyway) Canon S95. I have a Canon 7D DSLR that I use for a lot of my shooting, but as they say, the best camera is the one you have with you, and I toted my S95 just about everywhere I went, so I definitely wanted a replacement when I lost it.
I read reviews (as most people have) about how the RX100 was a game changer, and so it came down in the end to the S120, the RX100, and the RX100 II.
You can read the specs for the differences between the rx100 and the II; wifi and the opposable screen were enough for me to go for the II. I will probably never use the hotshoe.
First, picture quality: it is, as you can imagine, fantastic. I did a series of tests against other higher-quality point-and-shoots, and there is a definite difference. Now, is it worth the extra few hundred dollars? That's a decision only you can make, but the difference is there.
That said, the size increase over Canon's offerings (S95 S110 S120 etc) is also noticeable. The S95 or S120 I could easily slip into the back pocket of my jeans while the RX100 II is noticeably bulkier. I've started carrying my point and shoots in a small lowepro case on my belt, but even there you can feel that it takes up more real estate than the Canon.
Also, the Canon's zoom is obviously wider. This isn't such a big deal, but if you're looking to eke out that last few millimeters of zoom, you might want to take a closer look at the Canon.
Finally, there are the ergonomics. I've had awhile to get used to the Sony, but I still like the Canon's ergonomics and find them more intuitive. The lens ring on the Sony doesn't have positive clicks as you rotate it, which is a bit annoying, and buttons on the back are smaller than those on the Canon.
In summary, I am very happy with the Sony, but the daylight between it and the Canon is extraordinarily small, especially when using it as a causal point and shoot to take out on a night with friends, etc.

I own the first RX100M1 and RX10M1. The hot shoe, NFC and the tilting LCD that I like from RX10 are featured in RX100M2. It's still pocketable unlike the RX10. My new purchased RX100M2 will go everywhere with me.

This is a great camera for any user but highly recommend if you are looking for a smaller camera alternative to your DSLR. There are times when I want something in between a DSLR and Smartphone. This fits the bill perfectly. The Sony RX provides a lot of versatility you are used to in a DSLR but with a much smaller footprint.

mostly good pictures, but annoying gross lack of focus in pre-set scene "SCN" modes, especially SCN-Portrait and SCN-Macro modes. SCN modes take over all settings and should therefore take care of everything. But no: the AF will pick up objects around the all around frame EXCEPT the main subject in the center of the frame.

I have done "wonders" with this camera. I take it with me whenever I leave the house. Doesn't replace a full frame DSLR, but does just as good--or better than APS-C sensored DSLRs. If you're like me and many other pro shooters who don't always (or never) drag their big boy 5D Mark III around randomly, get the RX100M2. Great for events, indoor/outdoor and on-the-go. Since having it, I don't remember the last time I've used my 8MP iPhone. Also, great for big prints if you're into that.

I've had many digital pocket cameras in the past and have never been satisfied with them, because I wanted to use them to "capture the moment", and the time they took to focus and shoot was so slow, that the moment was long gone by the time the picture was taken. Most of them had the "press shutter button halfway to focus" feature, and when you did, they would flash a light on and off rapidly and the focus would go in and out for a few seconds, annoying people and scaring away pets and wildlife.
This camera is totally different. When you press the shutter button it shoots. Bam. No waiting. No press halfway to focus. It's exactly what I was looking for.
I also chose to get the model that included WiFi, which was a few hundred more than the "basic", but for me it was worth it. I've only had the camera for a few weeks so I can't really comment on all the other features, there are a lot and look forward to learning about them.

Got this camera because I wanted a compact digital camera with me where ever I go, and let me just say that the Sony RX100 series are by far the best of its kind, you won't regret getting it!
